This is going to be a great championship this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am wondering which teams qualified for atlanta through this weird selection this year
Team 188 will be sending a team down for the first time this year! :D
On a side note, when will we know which division (Edison or Franklin) we'll be competing in?

Good Job going down to Atlanta this year. Congrats on defeating us in Ontario, you guys have a great team and an amazing robots.
I think the announcement of the division will properly be announced after the last weekend of the FRC competitions which is after the New York Regional

Wow I honestly did not expect blizzard to go for FTC, but your bot definitely will do very well. It is one of the most consistantly good bots I've seen in FTC this year.
On a side note, it seems Canada will have a large number of teams representing it this year.
Canadians teams going:
189 Blizzard
339 Simbotics
478 Mustang Robotics
(maybe) 225
721 TBA
722 Vexagon
one other vancouver team I believe
Who wants to bet at least one Canadian team takes the world championship. :D

Yes, there will be two Vancouver teams from Gladstone Secondary making the trip. They took both the BC Regional, then partnered up with another Vancouver (ok... Burnaby) team to take the Washington State regional. A fourth Vancouver team was a regional finalist in Seattle, too... there was lots of hardware to declare at the border on the bus back from that trip.

I can tell you after NYC FTC event because they are running the four field and two divisions setup there.
Andrew Bates

I'm expecting there will be 4 fields this year. 2 fields per division. Last year with one division we had 2 fields so 2 divisions = 4 fields?
We will be running two divisions - Edison and Franklin - each with two fields, for a total of four fields. While one field in each division is being played on the other is being reset and the teams queued up. Thereby lessening "downtime" in between matches, so we can get more matches in!
Will the list of teams for each field be announced before the Championships, or at the Championships?

Are you sureit's going to be the same number of teams because of the lottery to pick the events that get the picks to go in all. I am thinking less teams more matches like 10-11 could that be true?
fredliu168
01-04-2008, 23:17
I'm personally predicting 6 matches per team, although 8 sounds reasonable as well. Here's why:
Despite having more fields, I "think" FIRST only has a certain number of crystals. That will be the choke point for match efficiency. You can have as many fields as you want, but if there are only 8 crystals per field; the time it takes for crystals to exchange hands between teams will be greater.
Oh and also, I'm predicting 50 teams per division. Sounds reasonable enough?
What I want to know is, will there be division awards as well as awards for the entirity of the FTC competition. Specifically, would division winners and finalists leave with a trophy?
Andrew Bates
01-04-2008, 23:52
The crystal problem shouldn't be that big of a deal. There have been I believe 16 crystals at each regional. That's enough to run two fields at the same time so it should be fine. Also they will need extremely good crystal management. Maybe tie the crystals to control stations. Easier to track problems if they arise too. I'm thinking this is the best practice. Also it will make sure teams don't accidentally walk off with the crystals.
I think they said something about awards spanning both divisions.

While I have no acutal knowledge of FIRST's crystal situation, I know that the frequency range that the radios work on has 30 frequencies that are allocated to RC cars ranging from 61 to 90. It would be possible for the Vex robots to use any of these frequencies, making it certainly possible to run two, or even four fields simultaneously.
Andrew Bates
02-04-2008, 07:59
I believe VEX uses the odd numbered frequencies. VEX sells the following crystals in kits A and B 65, 69, 81, 85, 63, 67, 83, 87. There is also 61 in the starter kits. I know they have more frequencies in the competition set because they have always been able to give crystals to the teams on the field and those on deck.
astephen68
02-04-2008, 11:39
wouldn't they have all the cyrstals from every event down in atlanta for the reason of lots of matches unless they bring the same crystals from each event to the next event. Also i am wondering if their is 2 division do the wining alliance from each division go on to the finals between those two alliances?
Andrew Bates
02-04-2008, 11:57
The two winning alliances will face off for an overall winner I believe.
I can take a stab at answering some of these questions, but please remember that everything is always subject to change! :)
The team list is incomplete because we still have events running. The division list is incomplete for the same reason. We're expecting 100 Quad Quandary teams (50 per division) plus 12 showcase teams.
We're playing in 2 divisions, Edison and Franklin, with division winners going head to head in a final match (so alliance selections for Edison teams will be among Edison teams only, etc). Division selections will be random and teams may not select the division they will play in.
We're hoping each team can get in 2 practice matches and 7 competition matches. We've put together an awesome set of volunteers and our goal is to keep on schedule as much as possible so teams get the chance to compete as much as we can fit in to the schedule!
Our new platform will debut in the Showcase Competition which is going to be held in the pit area on Thursday! Check it out!
The Public Agenda was posted on the FIRST website (http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedFiles/Who/Media_Center/FIRST_Facts_Assets/2008/2008_CMP_PublicAgenda.pdf), and of course, is subject to change, but will give you an idea of all the stuff that's happening in Atlanta while we are there. Note that we have an awards ceremony on both afternoons now so plan to stay for it. Awards go to the division finalists, the finalist alliance and the winning alliance. Showcase teams will also win a finalist and winning alliance award. Judged awards are not per division (one Inspire winner, one Think winner, etc).
As you can see on the agenda, we're open on Wed afternoon for early team check-in and inspection. Save some time on Thursday and get it out of the way on Wed if you are already in Atlanta! We'd like everyone to be in the Dome for the final matches on Friday, plus to see the final matches of the Showcase, followed by Closing Ceremonies. Our pits will close early on Friday, but will be open on Sat morning for a couple of hours for those who still need to pack up. Plan accordingly.
Also note the FIRST Conference sessions (http://www.usfirst.org/community/firstplace/content.aspx?id=7520) - you may find them to be helpful to register for and attend. And plan to visit the Scholarship college tables - many of the Scholarships are being offered to FTC students as well as FRC students.
I hope that answers some of your questions...

Do you know when we will know the results of the lottery, i have been looking around the offical first site but i have found nothing? Do you know when we would know the results
Andrew Bates
02-04-2008, 15:37
The results have already been sent to the teams that got in. Unfortunately if you have not been told yet I expect you did not get a lottery ticket.

To answer the crystal question. The total set of Vex Crystals (publicly available and competition set) is 30. 20 are part of the competition set. FIRST does own multiple crystals sets but the crystal process (being shaken down at NYC this weekend) will still be the bottleneck.
Experience shows that the publically available crystals really cannot be used because there is too much chance of interference when someone turns on a robot somewhere else with that crystal. For the same reason, I'd expect the teams will only receive the transmitter crystals at the last moment so that it is not possible to transmit on the competition frequencies accidentally. Unfortunately this is what we believe caused issues last year. No intentional malice on the teams part, but robots being turned on with crystals that were in use disrupting the templates and causing problems on the field. The goal is to minimize that this year.
I just wanted to welcome our partner schools in Singapore to the FTC Championship. I am not sure what team number that they registered with but they will be there. We are very excited for them and can't wait to see them in Atlanta.

Just some talk on the Vexforum. As for who is the best in this competition. There is not a robot in this competition that could win it by its self. You need a well balanced alliance parter to round your alliance in order to do well.

That's for sure. In Washington I only saw one robot totally dominate one match, and they didn't make into the finals due to an unfortunate incident. In a quarterfinal match, Captain Hook (417) managed to grab one goal, and push the paired goal against the side, trapping the final goal against the side. One of their opponents' robots was trapped sideways between two goals and couldn't move (they weren't pinned, it's just that they weren't strong enough to move the goals out of the way, and they couldn't drive under the bar between the paired goals.) Hook's alliance had also won autonomous. Thirty-eight points scored by 20 seconds into teleoperated, and their partner just spent the rest of the match blocking the open goals from the one robot on the opposing alliance that could move. It wasn't exciting, particularly, but it was awesome.
Lowfategg
04-04-2008, 12:59

Only the first 3 count for awards (like Inspire or Think). A team can attend as many regionals as they like and win. If they win they still receive the winning alliance award.
astephen68
04-04-2008, 13:20
It is very true that you need an good alliance partner because one team if defended can be beat but if you have 2 robots that are even and both can score on 24" then you have a better chance at winning. It does not mean though that one team can't just dominate by scoring all the points for the alliance but it means you need a back up plan just in case :)

Anyone else worried that they may have placed the fields too close together? Presumably there will be matches going on at the same time right? With the fields this close together I'm worried that people in the audience will get confused between announcers and fields. Also there is the crystal problem... I was expecting them to keep the fields far apart to minimize interference.
OR are they still only going to run one match at a time, just with four fields...

They will most likely be running 4 matches at a time and the fields will be far enough away from each other so you can see all the fields at once with little interference problems

I suspect they will be running 2 matches simultaneously while queueing for the other two fields. The announcer may be announcing two fields at the same time....
One match at a time with 4 fields sounds much too inefficient for me.

Wouldn't 4 matches at a time be more efficent and 2 matches while queing sounds right too but it's big enough to do 4 matches, why wouldn't they do that? You'd be running 4 matches which takes about 3-4 minutes, followed by at least 3-4 minutes downtime while you're switching between matches. Alternating fields, during the 3-4 minutes that 2 matches are running, the other two fields are doing reset. Same throughput (total number of matches run per hour), but there's some action going on nearly continuously. You're not stuck watching reset.

I am not saying that it`s a sure win for 1114, i am saying that everybody still needs to watch out for them. I think that they are most likely going to make it to the the CHampionship finals. Everybody needs to be aware that 1114 has a strong robot and they are a good team

I have to disagree with your choice of Edison because your forgetting that FTC 189 outperformed 478 at the Ontario Championship. I'm assuming your pairing these teams by their recent performances? Also, you may not have seen the rest of the 47 teams. You never know if teams have added/ adopted new features from other robots which might improve their performance durastically.

I definitely didn't say 189 was worse than 478. We have definite respect for you guys and your robot. I certainly didn't pick in terms of how good the robots were, but rather by strategy.
It is a general concensus (spelling mistake?) that the winning alliance will consistant of a combination of at least one ramp robot and at least one stack robot. The reason I picked 74 over you guys is because they've won 4 regionals and are one of the favourites going into this competition.

The difficulty with FTC is that generally there is so little information available to do decent scouting. Or scouting comparable to the level you'd expect from FRC.
If you asked me who the "best" FTC teams are right now, I'd honestly have no clue. I'd also be half expecting to find a dozen or so EXCELLENT robots that I've never heard of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1S7X0rSogI).
It's a fine balance with FTC. With the history of "comandeered" designs, many good teams are reluctant to post videos of their robots. But there's a point in time where this works against you; you might have a great robot that no one knows about, and slips through the cracks come eliminations.
You might've even won a tournament, and scored some of the highest scoring matches in all of FTC... and people still would have no idea who you are. FTC is a strange beast sometimes.
The information just isn't out there for FTC, but eventually, you either a) get the word out about your robot, or b) hope that the good teams down there scout you and understand what you bring to the table.
Hopefully, you do some of both.
P.S. I'm not a member of 189 either. I have no idea what new tricks they have up their sleeve, but we'll find out soon enough.

I'd be willing to make a bet that there are a few beastly teams which copied 339's strategy in not mentioning themselves online. And nobody will know of them because they are either rookies or unknown in previous years.
I only have scouting data on about 30% of teams (pictures and data) and have heard the results of about 20% more, which leaves me wondering what the other half will bring to the field.
On the other hand, if a team is consistently good, it is often well-known.

this is actually something our team strived to maintain even while we knew that the other design was far more efficient than ours. even then, we proceeded to the semifinals of the Georgia regional and the Quarterfinals of the NC regional... because we kept our robot's design all in all the same, we felt a lot more proud of our robot than i think we would have if we had copied some other team's idea
unfortunately we wont be attending the Championships, but our team wishes the best of luck to all teams who are -

Here is some video of one of the matches with 30, 74 (I think final on Edison or the match we pulled a 121 pointer, I really don't know. By the way this is the first video of Overdrive uploaded this whole season).

And here is one of the final matches but I am guessing the user that posted this video will upload the second match in a while.

Heh, the FTC championship was a nice compliment to not getting picked in Curie. Beach Cities had a blast. See you all next year???

Probably. Who cares about those ungainly big robots? They look kind of grotesque now. Midirobots rule.

The first Edison quarter final was with 30 & 74 where we combined for a score of 121. The second quarter final was with 30 & 23, where we scored a total of 119. I believe those were the two highest scoring matches in the tournament!
The first final between the two divisions was really exciting for us. We got to show off the full capability of our bot when it really counted! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the second single goal open up in the last 15 seconds. Team 25 had it locked up for the majority of the match! When I got onto the field to check the position, I found it was only in our zone by 0.5"!
Special thanks to 25, 30, and 74. You guys rocked!

Heh, you guys did a great job of getting that last goal. Unfortunately, we had to let it go while we tried to prevent 30 from scoring- if they'd gotten those rings on it wouldn't have mattered whether you guys got the goal or not. Eh, you win some, you lose some.
It was always funny when both alliances were trying to score on the post at the same time and we'd be frantically trying to move one end while keeping the other as still as possible. Thank goodness Mr. Roboto had that hook. :D
I was really happy to see southern California teams in the finals! It seemed our paths always crossed at the finals though. I remember thinking, "these gals can play some serious defense; we have our work cut out for us." Perhaps next year we can pair up like we did in LA!

When we found out we were going against you guys in the final match, we thought "Oh no! These guys can play some really good offense, and they know exactly how our bot works! They already know how to beat us!" Needless to say, the last match we played in was one of our toughtest ever.
I can't wait 'til I get a copy of the photo we took with you guys. It was hilarious and awesome all at once.

Ok I patched together this final match video, its was taken with one camera which got auto mode and a little of user control when the battery died and then smartly our camera man used a digital camera to record the rest.
