Looks like a great group of robots we have here... even a familiar face from eleminations alliances we've been in earlier this year... hello again 2048! :D

And we'll have the pleasure of hearing the famous OINK OINK BOOM!!! from 1908... We've got some hawiians... Canadians... Alooooha, eh? ;)

I'm surprised to see we even have a good number of fellow IndianaFIRST teams.

Can't wait to see you all there! GO TEAMS!!!

And... guess who's back this year? They may have moved from Newton to Archimedes, but the sea of maroon hasn't been broken up: 177, 190, and 987 are all in Archimedes together.

1024, one of the two teams to take three regional wins this year, is also joining us in Archimedes.

236, six-time Regional Chairman's Award Winner, who may just take the cake for the National Chairman's Award this year, will also be in Archimedes.

1902 was on Einstein last year... will they be one of the teams representing Archimedes on Einstein this year?

Team 116 was awarded a long overdue Chairman's Award this year at the last regional event of the season- perhaps they'll represent Archimedes with the National Chairman's Award this year?

And how could we forget 71; they've made a place for themselves in FIRST, and I'm sure they will on Archimedes.

Team 27 has also brought a lot of attention to themselves with some of their crazy Overdrive moves, and I'm sure they'll bring a lot of fun to Archimedes.

Another notable team of the season is 555, who will also be joining us on Archimedes.

We've also got team 11 to keep us company on Archimedes; they've shown off their expert performance starting at week 1 in New Jersey.

Who thinks that Archimedes is in for the win?

Glad to be out of Newton for a change.

Being 1727 in Newton division is just a weird omen.

We were in Newton the past two years (the only two years we've gone), so we were kinda hoping for Newton just to continue the trend. But now that I see Archimedes... I think I like it more, anyway.

Who is our emcee/announcer?

That hasn't been decided yet (I don't think)

Last year it was the energetic Mark Leon, and the legendary Don Knight.

But Blair hasn't assigned divisions yet, because obviously the announcers/emcees want to be with their teams.

So as soon as we're assigned I'll let you know.

 Heh, we never placed well in the past two years... with this omen lifted... who knows :D

I had been saying Newton was our lucky field... but it wasn't consistent. In 2006, we were seeded about halfway through the division, and weren't selected for eliminations. In 2007, we seeded 3rd, and were disqualified in the finals, losing to the eventual world champion alliance. Maybe Archimedes will be luckier? Although it's hard to say, with so many good teams.

Team 201 is extremely excited to be in Archimedes this year! We were in Galileo two years ago and in Newton three years ago, so we've been around. I look at the list and I see an extremely tough division. I'm personally happy that we get to 177 again, with whom we won Galileo two years ago.

Good luck to all of Archimedes! One more week and then we show them all what we can do! ARCHI-MEDES!

Einstein is not a division... at least it doesn't really exist until the four divisions have run their course and arrived at their conclusions for who's cuisine reins supreme! *dramatic music...* (oh, sorry, my brain skipped to the Iron Chef track... I mean who's robot is the best :o )

If you have any impressions that any other division is stronger than
ours think about this...

No one team makes a winning alliance. If you ask them
they like the carpet filled up on both sides of them on
the starting line.

All teams break somethiing sooner or later... If sooner
probably the better, if later well then nerves of steel prevail.

Finally when you are staring across the plexiglass of life
remember the first thing you see is your own reflection.
Of course the next thing you see is a robot screaming down
at you so quit looking at yourself and grab your OI panel!

go Archi-medes!

I posted this on another thread, but I figured I'd post it here to see what kind of responses I get.

What 3 team alliance would you like to see represent Archimedes on Einstein?

A few guidelines to consider before posting.

1) Don't put your own team into the alliance. Share the love, and pick 3 other teams out there (there are enough of them to choose from :p )

2) Make them "realistic". What I mean is that as much as we would love to see a 987, 1024, 365 alliance, it's probably not going to happen because I doubt any of those three would make it to a second round pick. So based on what's likely to happen, make your choices.

Any thoughts?

I know that every single division has some outstanding robots in them and all four division are going to be very competitive. However, every single person knows in the back of their head that the division they are in is going to be the best. That our way of getting pumped up for the competition within our division's. Every single division will have people saying they are the best and can justify that statement. Why??? ANSWER: Because we all are the best.:)

987, 1024 and 1690. GO ISRAEL!

1902 is humbled to be with such a great group in Archimedes. Our rookie year we were selected by 233 and 33 in Archimedes. We lost to the team in finals that eventually went onto Einstein and was undefeated.

We were blessed to be in Einstein last year and look forward to trying again this year.

As an adult mentor it is so much fun to be with you high energy kids.

BTW the Randomizer Randomizer Oy Oy OY really caught on and had the announcer saying it.

Archemedes, as of this post:

- Most entertaining division? :p
- Most talked about division.
- Only division piloting Iron Robot: Battle of the Master Engineers - A Race Against Rust. :D
- Most possible awesome alliance names (UberBacon, Uber-Kil-A-Bacon, Anomaly Kil-Az, AnomalyBacon, etc.)
- Can say Aloha-eh?

I'm sure there's more, but thats what comes off the top of my head for right now. :]

Yes I too mourn the loss of not being on the same team. Now we have to play against you yet again. I don't know if you know, but we used to do a catapult, trebuchet competition where Highland and Hayden were the main entries for three years. It was held in Gilbert at Mother Natures Farm on Baseline. We finished 2nd to you three years in a row!!! I guess its our destiny...
Oh well, good luck and we hope to see you in the finals and maybe actually get the chance to maybe win for once. Thanks and take care!!

Oh hey, Hurry and sign up for NURC! We have 19 teams so far and room for only 24 total!!!

A group hug would be totally awesome. But when we would we do it? I love how everyone who has posted on here has been so enthusiastic about the competition. I am pretty excited I have been thinking about it like non-stop since the divisions were released. I realized I am pretty excited to see teams we have been with before Moe, RA, Firebirds. I can also not wait to work with people I have never had the chance the to work with 1024, 1124, and 1902 come into mind but there are many other. See you all in a week. You can only name teams that haven't won a regional and no naming your own team :)

Just looking at the posts I have to agree this has got to be the biggest collection of good fun teams all on Archimedes! We can't wait to meet up on the field. we have a small team that's a little whacky, ok a lot, but very spirited. We had our whole alliance wearing leis and doing the haka with us in SVR and Hawaii during the elimination rounds. Hopefully we'll be good enough to be able to do the same in Archimedes. So many are coming in with killer records. We'll see you all soon....hopefully it will be warm for us in Atlanta! speaking of the Hula....during the Innagural Hawaii regional this year we had an unbelievable free Luau Friday night with lomi lomi salmon, Kalua pig, and Poi. Many teams, including 25 from Jersey, were called up on stage to do the Hula. I'm sure there are blackmail photo's out there somewhere! Someone from team Pink won a poi chugging contest. It was an unreal regional even for the teams from here so if you guys can make it out here this far next year you'll get to do plenty of Hula! We've been asking if the Luau will be a regular part of the event, its worth the price over here alone.
Although we have several students with Hawaiian Ancestry I'm not sure if any of them will be doing the Hula in Atlanta?? We will have our Hula skirts on so we'll see.....

I'd actually put 27 as one of the top dogs in our division. The other 2, yes.
I'll throw in there 1218, not really a sleeper but 357 Royal Assault, 2024, 49, 1379.

I actually really like this division because in all honesty, anyone could take the win.

edit:27's drivers just need a little more practice maneuvering around other robots. Their roller and shooter system is fast at hurdling; however, their drivers are not. This imbalance is what is throwing them off. I highly suggest that they step up their game at driving and paying attention to the other robots on field to stay on top of this division. Even so, I'm still pulling for them to take home the win. Good luck to them :)

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it... whoever from our division that gets to go to Einstein will most likely not have enough batteries to keep running on Einstein since the matches there run quickly, and there isn't a ton of time between the end of the division play and the start of Einstein to charge batteries. So, when it gets to be Saturday... let's make sure our Alliance has a steady supply with them from their Archemidian family. :]

I think it's gonna be...., now note, i these results are based on over record, how well i think they are, and who i want to pwn. I will also back up my statements...:D

Team 1124 will rank number one. With a 217 like design, they have a very effective arm which led them to win the conneticut regional undefeated.

Team 1261 will join team 1124. Team 1261 will have a strong showing due to their improved hybrid and much improved forklift. They may rank top eight but will definitley manage a top 15 finish.

Then another SPEED robot will join them. Just purely to lap and defend.

Team 1124 may ask other robots depending on show...Team 1124 and tam 1261 can both be replaced by 1024, 1504, 27, or the bacon team. Have fun.

It only grabs data from TheBlueAlliance. I'm not sure how they handle matches where scores were not entered (noted by ? on TBA's website). However I could do some tests to figure that out, and handle them as if you did not compete in that match (so that your win%, average score, etc are not affected.). Thanks for pointing that out!

I wonder what the grounds will be to denying an alliance in world...do go with a great robot and then go to world...or do you try and be alliance captain and hope to pick a great robot and then be glorified as the alliance captains??? This should be good....

I don't know about a pure lapbot being the second pick. I would advise against it just because you're limiting your alliance's capabilities in eliminations. The third robot WILL be a hurdler as well as one that has shown significantly high scores in other regionals and has used top defensive strategies. Two of the best strategic teams are probably the eighth seed alliances that won regionals this year and also the other low seed teams that won because it shows the strength of their strategy and driver capabilities, not to mention how well they work with other teams.

Team 476 is bringing Oklahoma Hospitality to Atlanta (and hopefully not the OKlahoma weather)

I love this thread--Keep the spirit going. I can't wait to meet all of you. Are you all going to attend the web hug on Thursday at noon?

Has anyone collected data on how many Regional Champs, Chairmans' etc are coming to our field?

here you go--lets rock it

Well...i guess if ur third pick is a mix of a fast/hurdle/good drivers....if you have a dominant alliance, purely hypothetical, of 1114, 217, and 1124, then the balls get launched over at an incredible rate. In one lap 1124 may hurdle and then 217 will pick up the ball on the other side of the hurdle and then 1124 will proceed to do a lap...

But that's only like super domination and an amazing feet hoping that non of those robots get pick and like the odds are slim...but when you have a number one seeded alliance, with two good hurdlers, you want to look for a bot which will keep out of your way, defend, and make good time on laps.

Have three bot which will hurdle is HIGHLY unlikely...but having one lap/defend...i would suggest it.

Not really...going through the teams in Archie, I've found many good hurdlers who can also speed around the field. Trust me, there will be no shortage of good hurdlers for each alliance. I still highly recommend have 3 hurdlers and the 3rd hurdler being a strong defender with a fast drive train (yes that is a contradictory argument but the type of defense being played this year is not in terms of brute pushing force).

btw, the point of the 3rd hurdler is not that all three will get to hurdle, its merely the fact that if needed under certain circumstances, the main or secondary hurdler can switch strategic positions with the 3rd hurdler/lapper if the first hurdler's mechanism dies or something.

Im giving up my exchange to austria to attend nationals!
in the hardest choice of my life ive come to decide i my team needs me as a captain and a driver, and austria will still be there. DEPRESSING as hell, but i will see you all in atlanta. Stop by team 41's pit and check us out.

i feel ur pain, i decided FIRST over my prom. i had this sweet all orange tux complete with cane and top hat and then we won a regional but i could always wear that to the competition. anybody wearing something normal is going to stick out like a sore thumb, FIRST is like that. i'll be by 41....

5 days is to long....

if you put it like that, then you have one team which won't hurdle. And they have to understand that...it's understandable that if you have three hurdlers and all three hurdle at once...then communication is going to be AMAZING between them..and that's one thing that FIRST hasn't grasped..that although teams strategize and stuff..but the driversof different robots don't communicate that well during the matches...i guess you can't blame FIRST for that...

But i see what you're trying to say...It'll be interesting to see how the alliances end up..i dun see there being 24 effective hurdlers in each division.
Each division has like 10-12 and the really stacked ones like Galileo have like 14...3 hurlders to an alliance just isn't feasible.

Oh yeah..and where do we get the archimedes bannas?????

And anyways, there's tons of stuff to talk about, and options to discuss. Like... anyone interested in eating lunch together one of the days? Or if anyone's still awake/rarin to go after uncrating, maybe a bite to eat somewhere? (unrealistic at that time of day, but who knows).

-q

Yo man thursday or friday if you wanna get some lunch with some people I am always down for eating with people. And I am also not a picky eater. But after uncrating I believe we are going to a restaurant with the rest of the team. Not sure, that is assuming I even uncrate. If not I will be at dinner with the team.

What would you define as effective hurdling? I think that the strategy at many regionals was the best two hurdlers team up and take a 3rd bot that would best fulfill a strategy (lapping, defense, ball knocker, etc...) since there were no more hurdle bots. But I think in these divisions, there are enough hurdling capable bots that can also employ those previously mentioned strategies. Our team is a good hurdle bot and at each regional we attended we had to be one of THE hurdle bots on our alliance. While we aren't going to hurdle 5 times a match, 2-3 hurdles/match is a given for us now and with our improved system we were able to get 4 in one match at Davis. But we also have an amazing drive system, two speed AMs, 12-15 ft/s in High. But in every match we had to be the hurdle bot and never really got to just run laps. I'm sure there are other teams in the same position as ours that could really round out a divisional winner; a hurdle capable bot that can also defend, lap, etc...

my $.03 and a little horn tooting.

Yup, that's basically what I said in my previous posts.

Back to alliances, I think that 71, 1024, and like 2377 would be awesome in repping Archie on Einstein as well as 1124, 1024, and 816. 816 is actually fast as hell when they have a good field w/o too much traffic + they hurdle.

edit: realized that 365 won't be around for a second draft pick. Replace 365 with like 2377. I remember they were a 121 look-alike.

Yeah at first i saw 1124 and i was like..pfft..whateva...but then i took a closer look and then..dang..they have an easy ball grabber which will allow them to easily do whateva they want..should be interesting... Does anyone have videos from any of 1124's conneticut matches?

I wonder what the grounds will be to denying an alliance in world...do go with a great robot and then go to world...or do you try and be alliance captain and hope to pick a great robot and then be glorified as the alliance captains??? This should be good....

Since a lot of you are talking team selection and strategy, who has a good autonomous/hybrid mode?

check out our youtube of our autonomous ball popper. we have several youtubes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeOjMVcF_sI

Our bot knocks out a ball and crosses 2 lines in hybrid mode.

What other bots in our division have good hybrid strategy?

Do we have any bots that catapult/shoot/sling the balls as a projectile?

How many are "rabbits"?

How many are ball handlers with a claw or grabber?

Looking forward to cheering with yall.

Our bot knocks out a ball and crosses 2 lines in hybrid mode.

Do you have to be in front of the ball to knock it down? Or is it driven by the robocoach? But that is a very effective way to knock it down. Also, do you put that up or is it always up? So if you are in front of an opposite ball are you going to knock it down?

Tonya Scott 476
12-04-2008, 09:33
It works best if the ball is either straight ahead, or 1 slot over. It is hard to get it from the opposite side starting position.

The ball popper works during hybrid or regular mode, the kids move it up and down with pneumatics.

The ball grabber can either hurdle or stuff.

This video is airing on Sunday--it is about our 24 rookies, mentoring them, and our 1st regional in OKC. If you watch--you can see our robot in action with the ball popper.

We had a great time in Kansas City also--we picked 1806 & 1802 (we were 8th alliance captain) and we had a great time playing with them. 1806 has a great bot--they came to OKC and won there too!

our team is staying at the Residence Inn (they have an awesome full, hot breakfast every morning) the kids picked the Residence over the Omni---thank goodness. I feel sorry for all the teams that had to be moved out of the Omni.

The team on Einstein will be a combination of two out of this group 27 ,71 ,987 ,1024 ,1124 depending on where they fall in the rankings. and who has first pick. There also going to have a good third partner that can hurdle like 85,93,177,365,525,1504,1902, or play great defense like team 66.201,or 2604.

1. Moe, amazing robot, i love how smooth the whole process is. Absolutely amazing.

2. 476, once again, amazing ball knocker offer, do you guys even have like acurracy or timing issue with that??? Like if you don't set it off at the right time, it misses.

3. 1124, simply amazing, both in hybrid and operator control. It'll be fun to play with/against your team.

We have found what you look for in the third round out partner in a
alliance is someone who doesn't run up any penalties on a regular basis
and is willing to work with the alliance and do what is needed.

Sounds simple but ask anyone who has Scouted and sometimes you don't
find those qualities in teams.

I agree you need to have 3 hurdlers to do the job in Nationals. All the
machines should be able to switch duties at a moments notice. If you
don't have the ball run laps or clear a path for your team or knockdown.

MikeT
12-04-2008, 13:56
I agree. Nationals is a whole new animal and will be a lot different than the regionals we're used to seeing. The strongest alliance will be the one with 3 hurdlers. And i think there are going to be plenty of hurdlers in each division. And like what was said before, the third partner should be able to handle any situation possible to benefit the alliance.

We were actually the first pick by the #3 alliance at VCU and got to the semi's. We lost to team 1086 Blue Cheese (currently in Newton), a fast and efficient launcher.

We have a whole bunch of youtube videos, just search for Team 401 on the site. Here is a link of us at VCU.

Haha, good to see people finally agreeing with me about the 3 hurdlers. As for teams that scout well and see what teams got penalties frequently, I actually found it was a lot of rookies. Not generalizing too much, but its true although some rookies were pro's at driving and some veteran teams...well, let's just say they didn't have the best of luck. And yea, we take penalties and how well other teams work with us into account during alliance selection.

Also, just some constructive crit: I think that 1124's driver's need some more practice in terms of being faster with those hurdles and driving around a lot quicker. The hurdling itself is fast; however, in the matches I watched, they seemed to be taking it easy while driving and I think that'll make a huge difference on their performance when (not if) they get on Einstein.

There is absolutely no way that 365 will be around during the 2nd round of selection. None. Nada. Zilch. Zero.
3-5 Hurdles + ability to place + 3 line, 2 ball hybrid = 1st round selection

thefro526
12-04-2008, 14:30
I'm with everyone that thinks we'll see three hurdler alliances. We're gonna see some alliances with hurdlers that shoot pick a decent hurdler that places reliably and that can run laps. I personally think though that should we be in a picking position, we've been there twice this year, We'll pick someone with a good auto/hybrid just because if you can gain a lead over a better alliance in hybrid you may just be able to hold them off. I know we won one match in Philly after our alliance got like 9 lines in hybrid and a ball down, it gave us enough of a lead where the other alliance couldn't catch us.

MikeT
12-04-2008, 14:30
Yup that's for sure! From what i've seen from the regionals the first round picks will consist of: 27, 71, 93, 365, 987, 1024, 1124... Let me know if i left out any of the big boys. These guys are the strongest hurdlers from their showings at the regionals this year. The 2nd round picks will be the remaining of the hurdlers left. I think that when it comes down to it, placing for the bonus is still going to be a factor. So having that 3rd hurdler will help if the other 2 are only shooters.

It's going to be really hard to compete in an alliance with just 2 hurdlers... unless they were 2 extremely strong hurdlers with a good hybrid bot. This may end up working in Galileo if 1114, 217, and 148 were alligned together. What do you guys think?

What other bots in our division have good hybrid strategy?

Do we have any bots that catapult/shoot/sling the balls as a projectile?

How many are "rabbits"?

How many are ball handlers with a claw or grabber?

Our primary Hybrid routine is designed to knock 2 balls in any target locations and get 3-4 lines (depending on ball locations). Video of this routine is at TBA semi final 2-2 at Philly (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/match.php?matchid=9773). It is lane-based so the robocoach doesn't drive the robot, just tells it which balls to knock down. We also have routines to target the only the near of far balls so our partner can knock off the other ball. We look forward to working with the other great hybrid robots in this division.

Our robot is an arm shooter hybrid with a roller claw. To hurdle we raise the ball to about the height of the overpass, then use the roller, surgical tubing and pneumatics to shoot it over.

Well, first off, sorry if the public service announcement sounded too sam eagle like (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1yO_8co5TZw). :o

On the whole autonomous thing, for your convinience here's some video of our robot running in lap-mode:

>In competition: one (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/vids/08il/il_qm34.wmv), two (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/vids/08il/il_qm40.wmv), and three (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/vids/08il/il_qm70.wmv).

>In pre-season test: video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LRUsb2Pls4M)

>After a recent fix-it (with competition bot gearing and no lane changes, this can make seven lines): video (turn your volume up and you can hear the motors... sounds great!) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-q4NTcanElE), video with people playing mean and shoving the robot around (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7IszxvWliPA).

In the last two videos there, if you look you can see the claw opening and closing on it's own. This is because the practice robot has no knock-off bar like the competition robot does. To illustrate when the knockoff bar would be up and down, we opened/closed the claw. Also, once we get our robocoach board installed on the competition robot we have the ability to lane-change in order to knock off the ball regardless of which lane it's in. Of course, lane-changing adds distance to your run, so going for a lane three ball from lane one will cost you a line or two so you get about 5 lines and 2 balls instead of six to seven and two if you're on the inside track the whole way round.

After we overhaul the drivetrain thursday morning (it has over 75,000ft on it :yikes: ) we should be all up and ready to go.

That was kinda the point... we've run trials in our practice field, placing 3 other robots on the field all playing defense, and (autonomous included) we've been able to max out at 112(4) points, and min out at 50-ish (discarding outliers/broken robot trials). trust me, though, we've still been drilling them with practice hours, strategies, avoidance maneuvers, etc.

our robot's autonomous was also working badly at the CT regional for some strange reason... we have it all fixed up for the nationals. In theory, 5 lines 2 balls no matter what the ball position/starting position is. Its pretty sweet.

We have been able to get (in our practice field running our new software) the first ball 100% of the time, the second ball about 80-90% of the time, and five lines unless impeded (6 lines in the best case scenario: both balls are closest to the divider at the beginning)

Our elevator only goes up to knock the ball down if the robocoach gives it the go up signal, if there is no signal then no ball knock off. The only times we missed in Philly were when the signal didn't get to the 'bot in time which is because there's about a .25 second window of error because in the time it takes the robot to move the 27 feet to the overpass ~2 seconds or so is the same time it takes to process the signal from the robocoach and move the elevator up

thefro526: I have an idea for you. If you're arm is servoed, why don't you tell it to go up a little even before it's told to go up?

If you're arm is not servoed, why don't you have your arm go up for 1 second, so it won't be high enough to mess anything up if you don't want it to knock off, and then if you do want it to knock off, have it continue going up. It should get rid of the problem you're experiencing with getting a signal to the robot right away... we had the same problem. :o

thefro526: I have an idea for you.

For your consideration: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=735520#post735520

-q

Q, We don't use an arm we use an elevator (not really a big difference) but it's not servoed.(Our teams feedback is the drivers) So what happens is, at the beginning of the match the elevator is held about 5 feet off the ground so that it has to travel about 14" or so to get to knock off height. it takes it about a second to get to that height. Our main problem is the aim into the robot while its against the wall. we shoot at almost at a 90degree angle to our IR sensor. We may add some pool noodles to gain a larger height margin of error so that if we are late with the signal the noodles will hit the ball anyways. Check us out in Archimedes if you get the chance and I'll give you the breakdown.

IMHO 1024 is one of the most robust and reliable robots there are... even when running like sh... umm a Ford it stll holds it own and wins.
The drive team works together like a QB & Center that been playing for years.
There program team is top notch and their can do spirit is unstoppable.
I know there are a lot of folks that love 1114 as if it was Obama...
They good... I'll give them that... but 1024 has a better overall package!

Greetings from team 2550.
We're rookie all-stars from Oregon and in the Archimedes division. I'm excited : )
This is our first year at the world championship, obviously, and looking at this forum, I think we're pretty lucky to be put in this division.

Now hopefully the airline problem doesn't force us to go on a 38-hour road trip and won't strand our team captain and our team manager in Pittsburgh and San Jose : \ </pessimism>

Looking forward to seeing you all in Atlanta!

How many teams from Archimedes are going to the Braves game Fri night? If you aren't going to the game, what is your team going to do?

I have another question---what type of recording system do you use to record the video from the field? We usually bring a VCR, but it is a hassle to get the VCR set up with out a monitor--I don't know if it is on the correct channel, what speed the tape is set, etc.

I'm not up to date on digital recording devices. Some advice would be appreciated.

Team 2424 is a rookie team from Bixby, OKlahoma. They are 1 of the 24 rookie teams we started here in Oklahoma.

Only 2 Okie Rookie teams are coming to the Championship. (the other team is 2352 Metal Meyham--they are in another division, and won the Rookie All Star award. 2352 is sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation (the same Native American Nation that Astronaut John Harrington is from) In fact, John was a part of our Regional Planning Committee, and spoke at our September Team Summitt, our Kickoff, and was a judge at our OKC regional.

Team 2424 Bixby Robotics is in the Archimedes Division. As all rookies are, they are feeling a little overwhelmed--but very excited. They have a Championship countdown on their website.

At the OKC and KC regionals, the veteran teams were placed on the ends of the aisles, and mixed in with the younger teams to provide guidance and help. It also helped the pit area to look more "balanced"--in other words, all the veterans weren't on one end of the pits with the cool pit displays, etc. When visitors/VIP walked thru the pit, it had an even distribution of veterans and rookies.

Whoever is near our rookie buddies 2424---they are great folks, get to know them, they are from a small town--look after them for us. We will check on them often too. The really neat thing about them, is that the kids wanted to do FIRST so badly, that they do most of the work. The teacher doesn't have to "herd" them at all--like many rookie teams. Their kids are really awesome--so like I said before--get to know them if you have the chance--they are really cool.

They had such an impact on their community that they were awarded the Engineering Inspiration award check out their website http://www.bixbyrobotics.org/

Even if they aren't near us I will still go and get to know them. I know that my teams rookie year we did not have many people that wanted to do things on the robot. And to hear that they want to do things is a great thing. And if they are cool people that's even better I love meeting cool new people. Do to outstanding mentoring and awesome Gracious Professionalism--we can expect younger teams to be strong and look really good.

What used to take our teams 3 or 4 years to "get"---they "get it" their 1st year now!

(We had a short "intro to FIRST" meeting in June; an all day training session in September called "Team Summit" that included a variety of 45 min. workshops (the conferences at nationals were my idea a few years ago) so we do the same thing at home. Then we had a full day kit-bot build session on kickoff day. All 24 rookies left with rolling, functioning kit bot frames. And a better understanding of the kit components. Then they spent 6 weeks perfecting it! Now that is mentoring. We are planning on having an adult only mentor/teacher retreat in June to get to know each other, share best practices, and build the relationships between teams. We have a group called OKlahoma Robotics--and hospitality and gracious professionalism is expected and practiced among the adults!)

Not to mention how awesome the kit of parts has gotten. Rookies don't know how easy they have it!

Our 1st year (2000) we were like "HUH" about everything. We went to the Lone Star regional for our very first event--we didn't even know to bring a cart--we were carrying our bot everywhere! Then we decided to go to Nationals that year---we improved on a lot of things, raised $30,000 in a month, and won the National Rookie All Star.

But I'm telling you--the old way of looking at veterans first during scouting---we can't do that anymore. The young teams are looking GOOD!

Keep up the awesome mentoring!!

Keep sharing the scouting info too!

One of you techy youngsters needs to create a data base including a photo of the robots to put on our IPODS, PALMs, cell phones, lap tops etc ! That way when we click on our data, we can pull up a pic of the robot!

Just wondering if that opinion is after watching CT Regional matches or something else. Our drivers have been practicing a lot since then and working on speed and fluidity in their movements. When we're on the field, I'm always yelling at them to go faster. (-: Thanks for the comment, though, I think you're on to something.

Here's a picture of the bot for reference:
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=658
Here's a top view of the gripper (it's folded in):
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=678
Here's a side view with the ball:
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=658

This is kind of complicated to explain without having the robot here to point to etc, so I'm sorry if it sounds convoluted:

We have an arm with four aluminum "fingers" coming out of it. Coming down perpendicular to the arm is a stationary tube with a pneumatic cylinder inside. From each finger there is a fiberglass driveway reflector coming out at an angle. This makes them want to stick out at an angle. However, we have a stationary cord that connects all of them together, pulling them towards each other. At each end of this cord, there is more cord that goes up into the stationary tube where they are connected to the cylinder. This completes the rounded shape of the reflectors. By using the cylinder, we can adjust the length of the cord to be longer or shorter- this makes the radius of the gripper larger or smaller. To pick up the ball, we open the gripper, place it over the ball, and then close it around it. The red thing is a piece of fabric which has elastic such that it is taut when it is holding a ball, but not floppy otherwise. It helps to maintain ball control, and in the event of the fiberglass snapping (which it hasn't yet in competition), it will hold it in and prevent entanglement/violation of the 80" rule.

the four reflector tubes are all connected together with a peice of wire, which is tightened/loosened by a pneumatic cylinder that is stationed in the static aluminum 'thumb'.

actuating the cylinder will sort of 'winch' the string, which will tighten the fingers over the ball into an iron, easily undone, grip.

They've followed us home to interview the families and followed us in SVR with its controversial ending and in Honolulu. There's a chance that teams we partner with, and against, will end up in the final cut which they hope to release at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. Its been an awesome privilege to have this past year documented by a professional crew. You can catch a preview of their video from last year at: http://www.fleurdelisfilms.com/html/Welcome.html
I can't wait to see the final cut! Archimedes teams will be part of the final story so be prepared! Aloha

That's pretty sick. Hopefully I can pop my face in there :P

Awesomely cool though and nice work.

Wow. That's amazing...and great PR. What's the documentary for? Government? News? TV show?

Seeing it's going to be at sundance, I would think it's just a really cool documentary. Maybe to eventually be on TV.

Also if any teams are staying at the Sleep Inn Buckhead for Atlanta contact me via PM if you want to talk, play cards, or play ultimate Frisbee against the FEDS there.

its a indy film thats trying to highlight FIRST and the people involved... First has been around for awhile and now its time that it gets the right recognition. It is something that everyone involved should be very proud of. The film crew thats been following us around are some pretty cool people so if yo ever catch them off the record stop and say hi! show off some of that wonderful GP!:D

I leave tommorow and will only be able to be on CD during the night when we stop for the night. Driving there will be a perfect way for me to get my hacky sack skills back.

Even my laptop is gettin excited!

(and by excited I mean charged ;) )

I know we've talked about what hotels everybody is going on, but are there any IndianaFIRST teams that are flying on the same flight as us?

We have two seperate groups going down, one small group wednesday evening, one large group thursday morning... so, unfortunately I don't have the flight information for the large group... but anyhow:

> IND -> ATL: AirTran 195 (departs wednesday, 6:19pm)
> ATL -> IND: AirTran 400 (departs saturday, 10:59pm)

One thing I wanted to throw out there based on the comments I've been seeing.

Remember when it comes to the Championship after alliance selection what really determines the winner in many ways is reliability.

Quick math for everyone to remind you:
7 qualifying matches
Min 6 divisional elim matches
Max 9 divisional elim matches
Min 4 Einstien matches for a Champ
Max 6 Einstien matches for a Champ

That means you have to run 17-22 matches to win the Championship.
10-15 of which are Saturday afternoon eliminations.

Just something to keep in mind when you select alliances.

Edit: IMO 2 of the Uberbots, High Rollers and Rush will be allied and win the division barring a mechanical/bad luck incident.
Uberbots were a hair away from Einstin last year so they can taste it and High Rollers and RUSh both Have Championship credentials.
