View Full Version : Sprocket Wheels!
Hi everyone!
We have a couple of ideas how to make our robot faster:) and all of them are involving sprocket wheels:
we need a sprocket wheel for a motor (the thick one) with more than 15 teeth good for #35 chain, or a thin sprocket wheel with less than 22 teeth (also #35)
Is there anywhere other than AndyMark and IFI to buy sprocket wheels? what we need can't be baught on both of them.
Will there be an AndyMark/IFI/other store in the Dome?
also, if anyone has anything that he thinks might help us we would love to hear about it.
Thanks, Ziv.

You can try McMaster-Carr:
www.mcmaster.com
search on "sprockets" and look for ANSI 35 Roller Chain sprockets.
I'm not sure how you would place the order from Israel, but if you can place the order, they will ship to your hotel in Atlanta.
Good luck.
Thanks A Lot!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Actually, as I recall, the 1/2" bore sprockets McMaster-Carr sells don't have keyways broached in them. If you have means of getting that done, then it's a non-issue, but if you don't have the means (and don't want to try your machine shop luck), you may want to try Grainger (http://www.grainger.com) instead.

That is correct. Mcmaster has have two types - one with a set screw, and one without. The set screw is not to be trusted - you will need to broach for a keyway.
You are also correct - grainger sells them WITH keyways. Make sure you get the right sized keyway!

Also, from the quick glance I just took, the smallest shaft size with keyway that Grainger has is 1/2 inch.

Good point--I was making the (perhaps-flawed) assumption that they were using the AM Toughbox. Your mileage, of course, may vary.
i'm not sure we have the "means" because im not sure what we need in order to do it.. anyway why not trust the machine shop? if the have the means we have the skills..(we have a proffessional in these things)
EDIT: BTW we are using the AM toughbox

You'd need a broach and an arbor press in order to make the keyway. It's an easy task if you have them, a challenging task if you don't. My only leeriness with depending on any event machine shop is that you're risking a wait considering the number of teams present. I tend to prefer approaches that involve fewer resources beyond my control, but your tolerance for such risk (which, having never been to Atlanta with a team, I could be tremendously misjudging) will vary.
