I am told that I am annoyed by little things, so I thought it might be interesting to make a list of annoying things.

ok, to start with.

A dripping faucet.
People with their brights on.
The fly that won't leave you alone.

I'll continue it later. Add on anything that annoys you.

The letter "O" is not a number on my telephone, it is a "zero"

I do not have a "hot water heater". I have a "water heater". Why would I spend money to heat hot water?

You do not have a 2 1/2 half car garage. You have a large 2 car garage or a 2 car garage with a storage area. Maybe a 2 1/2 car garage would come in handy if you ever bought 1/2 a car.

Dare I say, saving seats at the championship?

Bikers who have very loud pipes (They don't save lives)
People who drive below the posted speed limit

Sorry, this is off topic... But I saw a lady the other day that had to have been 70 driving while talking on a cell phone. That is annoying and slightly funny.

To add on:
People who use big words to appear intelligent(most of them are not really as smart as they let on.)
People who take good statistics and use them to mislead someone.
People who can't go two minutes without cussing.

I know this is an old thread, but something really annoyed me.

I was doing a math problem and I was on problem 17. I was having trouble on part B so I was going to check the back of the book to see if the answer gave me an idea. You see, odd numbers are always in the back but not the even. B wasn't there. There was A and C but no B. I noticed all of the problems were like that. They have A C E but not B D F. The book seems to think that B is an even letter. So on to my pet peeve.

THERE ARE NOT EVEN LETTERS. Odd and even only applies to numbers. Not letters.

People who cut me off when im on a bike and yell "get on the sidewalk jerk!" even though im going 25mph on a 25mph road.

For cycling... Vehicles that, with plenty of room to go around, don't. In fact, the #1 best way to irritate me/make me nervous is to go my speed when you have room, especially if I'm making an effort to let you go by.

(Had a car once that did that. When I absolutely had to take more room in the road due to a parked car, they honked and sped by. I think they were laughing. I figure anyone who tries that to me again, I can remember a license plate number.)

People who drive poorly - especially following me too closely.

People who yell things out of cars at me while I'm riding my bike (more so if I know them, if they're strangers it's somewhat excusable).

People who cut me off on my bike. I mean really; I was going 30 in a 25, and I almost ran into the guy who cut me off because he couldn't wait five seconds to turn. I had to lock up my rear wheel to stop.

People who drive "sports utility" vehicles yet clearly don't do any sports. The people don't have much utility, either.

When I am walking around in a suburb and some random person yells " Learn to drive!!!" Its also happened when I've walked in crosswalks when the light has changed and its my turn to go. I've also gotten people yelling "Get a life!"

Do people have nothing better to do than to yell at pedestrians? How about they focus on driving themselves around rather than why a pedestrian (that's minding his own business) is not driving.

cars with no leg room. i have to sit there in my moms subaru forester for 12 hours to go on vacation and there is no leg room (my knees dig in to the front seat if i sit regularly) and my mom failed to consider the growth of a teenager when buying the car (25,000 dollars could have gotten her a much nicer vehicle.) and our last car was a nice 1997 isuzu rodeo, that was by far the best car for going on vacation, its deep roar could make you fall asleep and it smelled nice, not to mention the leg room in the back! but as soon as the alternator died my mom was like "we need a new truck! this one could break down" then she buys a subaru forester despite her being the only person who wanted a new car.

Bicycles. Sorry, I know many of you ride them...but they really annoy me. I know it is safety cautious to have a blinking light, but to have 5 of them is excessive and annoying. Not to mention when they expect you to pass in the country. Yes, I follow them slowly in the country for a distance. They usually want you to pass when they are on the top of the hill and you can't see if someone is coming. Sorry, but I don't trust your judgement, I need to see nobody is coming for myself.

I don't know if this applies to everywhere. I know alot of people bike and don't do these things. However, these are just a few things about bikes that annoy me.

Most organized night rides don't like the blinking light either. You can't really tell how far away someone is. So they pretty much say, use the blinker setting only if you have a problem.

What annoys me about bikes is how few riders follow the law at night. Taillight (at least in CA) is not required, but headlight use is. Guess how many use a headlight? (Yeah, and the typical wrong-way riders.)

I don't know if this applies to everywhere. I know alot of people bike and don't do these things. However, these are just a few things about bikes that annoy me.

I only have one headlight and one taillight (though it's an array of LEDs, actually); I agree that more than that is excessive. The blinking is a good safety feature for when you're riding in, say, the evening or morning, when the light is sufficient to see by, but it gives the drivers something to notice you by. Often if the light is not blinking, it's easy to not notice it. That having been said, when I ride at night, both my lights are on solid.

Now, on the whole passing thing: most cyclists I've talked to only do this as a courtesy to the drive because they're under the impression that the drive wants to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. If you don't pass them, they usually don't mind, as long as you're not tailgating them. I myself never signal that it's safe to pass because I don't want that liability, and the driver probably doesn't either...

I know I'm not the first, but bicycle riders on the road! get on the sidewalk with the rest of the children. some of us need to drive places without people in skin tight suits holding up traffic.

In most areas of the US, it is illegal to ride on the sidewalks (and it is unsafe to do so, as well). Cyclists commonly travel at an average speed of about 15 miles per hour (as low as 10 for some, as high as 20 for others); this kind of speed on a sidewalk is very dangerous because pedestrians do not expect someone to be riding this quickly and will step in front of them, causing a danger for both the cyclist and the pedestrian. No, cyclists belong on the road and have as much right to it as cars do.

No, cyclists belong on the road and have as much right to it as cars do.Yep.

And most cyclists do NOT intentionally hold up traffic. If they know what they are doing, they will be as far to the right as is safe, just like any other slow-moving vehicle. You should have plenty of room to pass them, unless it's unsafe to pass. If it is unsafe to pass, hopefully it's in the rare situation where a cyclist is "taking a lane" anyways, so you're only delayed until he moves to the side again.

Now, if they aren't as far to the right as is safe, or are going against traffic, they probably shouldn't be on the road.

I know my dad prefers cars to pedestrians when he's riding, primarily because he has some warning when a car is about to do something.

I'd like to append this with the most common interpretation of "as far to the right as is safe": about where a car's right tire is. Any further and cars will try to squeeze past without going out of the lane, causing a great danger. Any further into the lane, and it will be an inconvenience to everyone.

I agree.

Also --
People who say robotics is just something someone does, and it doesn't take effort.
People who say horseback riding isn't a sport.
People who contradict my essays for class when they are correct.
People who say "I concur" all the time.

People who are to arrogant and think robotics is a waste of their time.

People who are told two or three times to do something and don't.

Excuse me, but how is that grammatically incorrect?
I thought the same thing... But the grammarian in me says, "Let's look more closely at this sentence."

"Windows is shutting down"

First: There is no punctuation. On the computer screen, when this message appears, it is often followed by ellipses, which indicate continuing action. Possibly, there is no conflict with the rules of grammar.

Now, on to the sentence:

Subject --> Transitive verb --> Adjective

Where's the Direct object? In other words, what is Windows shutting down?

Or, Subject --> Linking verb --> Adjective

How does "shutting down" describe Windows?

I'm actually inclined to say that Microsoft's grammar is in fact incorrect. Note the other messages that appear around the message in question, or at similar times. No subject means that they are not complete sentences either.

EricH

Or...
Windows are shutting down.In this case, that would be grammatically incorrect. "Windows", despite looking like a plural form, is singular. It is, in fact, short for "Windows operating system", and "system" is the word that drives the singular/plural form.

If, however, you are closing all the windows in your house, and they all closed at the same time, and they all opened up and down, you could say, "Windows are shutting down" and be grammatically correct.

Herodotus
23-11-2008, 20:28
"Windows is shutting down. " would be grammatically correct, as long as there is a period. Really just the ellipsis is out of place.

Something else that annoys me.

Prescriptive grammar.

People who call them blinkers. Honestly, I think we might as well call them thingamajigs or dohickeys. Let's use proper terminology. They are turn signals.

people are made up of 4 traits: intelligence, lack of, industriousness, laziness.

1st type, intelligent & industrious. people best for leadership
2nd type, intelligent & lazy. people that will figure out how to do things only once.
3rd type, lacking intelligence & lazy. just about dead weight, don't do anything.
4th type, lacking intelligence & industrious. causing more problems than they are worth.

You turn the numbers off so you can use mouse keys. 8 moves the pointer up, 2 down, 4 left, 5 clicks, etc.

Now what about scroll lock? I don't know what it even does.

-So many times I heard this one in our pit: (HP is human player for our next mtch)

HP: Who's driving?
Me: I am, and Mike's the shooter. (2nd driver)
HP: I thought I was shooting!
Me: What?!
HP: Y'know, *motions throwing a basketball*, human shooter!
Me: THATS HUMAN PLAYER
HP: Same difference

We were in 14 matches this year, and it felt like that happened about 8 times.

-Inattentive human players:
Our robot was ready to get an empty cell from the outpost, actually WAITING for the human player on the #3 team (we were #2 on the alliance) to stop watching the other five robots at the far end of the field with about 40 seconds left. It took both our drive teams flailing like morons to grab his attention about the time the 'hurry up' sound went off.

Lousy math notation/reading.

3<7 is read as "3 is less then 7" not "7 is less then 3" or "3 is greater then 7"

the cubic root of 27 is not equal to 27 cubed

x(3/2)x(7/2) is not equal to (x^(3/2))*(x^(7/2)) The superscript makes a big difference

two divided by six is not three
six divided by two is

The list goes on.

I tutor lower levels of math up to pre-calc. I deal with this a lot. I hate to correct every time because I feel like a jerk and we get nowhere, but if I don't correct their words they won't be able to communicate their math properly.
