OK, I have seen some strange and creepy robotic systems over the years. But this is probably one of the strangest and creepiest. Festo (yeah, the same company that provides some of the valves in the KOP) recently developed the "AirJelly" - a robotic aerial jellyfish (check here for the YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_citFkSNtk) and Gizmodo article (http://gizmodo.com/383281/aquajelly-and-airjelly-robot-jellyfish-at-home-in-the-water-or-the-sky)). I don't know that it has any practical purpose, but it would have been a LOT more interesting to see a few of these floating around in the Georgia Dome at the Championships than just those two blimps. :)

Shades of the Planet Pandora- next sentient kelp?

however- how about using it to explore the rainforest canopy by putting cameras and small samplers on it?

(an idea for a project I was considering a few years ago)

After watching that awesome display, I looked at a couple of the Related Videos of other Festo robots and found this one: the Festo Robotic Fish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg30029bM58&feature=related). All I can say is: forget inflatable clown fish (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=406037&postcount=13), we're going for submersible robotic clown fish in 2009!

You heard it here first.
