An interesting factoid: This is the first time that a year's worth of caption contests has ended in the state of South Carolina. (And, to that end, not in the state of Maine.)

And, in keeping with end-of-the-year tradition, here's the video:

As always, the deadline is theoretically Saturday at midnight EDT.

Go!

In anticipation of next year's rule <G982>, but Billfred demonstrates the proper technique for tossing a volunteer who uses a clipboard contrary to rule <G981>.

Excited by the successful creation of The Genia Toss game,
Biilfred, Arefin, and Genia quickly began to make a list of other game possibilities for the lunch break:

Belch and Barter – whoever belched the loudest could barter for Billfred’s ref shirt.
That drew a red flag and was nixed.

Pun-ishment – whoever could make the worst series of puns in 3 minutes, won.
This drew boos from the crowd gathered and a wee curly-haired woman appeared with a clipboard. The game was nixed but not until a not-so wee curly-haired ref was clobbered by said clipboard.

They considered 3 Dorks In A Fountain but couldn’t decide who would go first. It became a discussion rather like Who’s On First (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/humor4.shtml), which created enough confusion that the clipboard made a 2nd appearance in the span of 10 minutes. The game was nixed due to a watered fowl… erm, foul made by said clipboard, called by the ref.

Wisely, after tossing so many ideas and Genia around in that short span of a lunch hour, the trio made a promise to meet again next year, returned to the competitions safely (including Billfred the Clobbered (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/img/5de/5dedc9650a4f1d56a0d1cb3b2a96c9b0_l.jpg)), and lived happily ever after.

Of note:
Billfred continues to turn a funny shade of pale whenever the words, clipboard or Jessica, are mentioned - and - he tends to disappear, always re-appearing in a timely fashion for: *trumpets blare* CD's Unofficial Caption Contest *trumpets, please don't blare anymore*.

Practicing for the 2008 game...

Unfortunately, that doesn't count as a hurdle OR a herd due to being too low for the former and you have to let go completely for the latter. Now, if Billfred and Arefin weren't on the same alliance, that would be another story.

Refs, of all people, should know that contact outside the bumper zone is prohibited.
Oops.

<npoe>There I was, looking through my copy of the rules, trying to find something about passing the ball between robots...then I realized that that was something our team was discussing during kickoff, not something in the rules :ahh: </npoe>

[obviously not an entry]

In all fairness, the only times I've donned stripes were Mission Mayhem 2006 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/25125) and the FVC World Championship in 2006 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/24644) and 2007 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/28325).

As they say in New England, leave your bumpers at home. ;)

OK, now Arefin you take a giant step backwards and throw. We keep doing this until one of us drops her and that's how we determine the winner!

Here we find two of the World's Strongest Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_Strongest_Man) hopefuls in an impromptu workout session. While it is unknown what their chances of winning the title are in December, it is reasonably assured that they will be named the World's Strongest Smelling Men by their co-workers later this afternoon.

"This Genia Toss game has no regard for human safety! I mean, Billfred could've easily torn his rotator cuff, forcing him to sit out for 6-8 Caption Contests!"

Although in hindsight the solution seems obvious, the early development of "Bean Bag Toss" was anything but easy. Like Edison's efforts to invent the lightbulb, literally thousands of trial-and-error iterations were required to find just the right game element to toss. This video documents an early attempt at refining the "Throwing Something That Squirms And Wiggles" Toss. Other notable but rejected efforts include the Brimming Pot O' Burning Oil Toss, the "Ew, Look What I Had For Lunch" Toss, the Sack Full Of Sharp Pointy Objects Toss, the Here Is A Handful Of Water Toss, and the far from spectacular "Heaving A Small Car Until You Get A Hernia" Toss.

Arefin told Billfred he threw like a girl. Billfred thought he said throw him a girl. And so the Genia Toss was born. (which really ticked of Genia)

{Not an entry} Is Genia the plural of Genuis?

Travis Hoffman

Billfred throws Genia away in much the same manner as Travis does with his chances of winning the Caption Contest title with this horrid entry.

Given the large retired and elderly population in Florida, the ratio of "old ladies needing help across the street" to "boy scouts", is quite high.

Ari and Genia help BillFred demonstrate one solution our resourceful scouts have come up with to deal with the problem.

Now, you're probably looking at the scores and wondering whose captioning reigns supreme. Traditionally, the first tie-breaker is average score. EddieMcD's average score is 2.69 points per entry, while Travis' average score is 2.80. Therefore, in the tradition of end-of-the-year-awards:

Champion: Travis Hoffman
Runner-up: EddieMcD
Highest Average Score: dlavery (5.33 points in six entries)
Highest Average Score With More Than Ten Entries: KathieK (3.00 points in 38 entries)
Most Wins: Wayne Doenges and KathieK (5 each)
Most Burns: EddieMcD (Nine!)
Perfect Entry Streak: EddieMcD and Wayne Doenges, with 52 entries this year. Also-notable streaks include JaneYoung, GaryVoshol, and boiler with 51 entries and Travis Hoffman with 50.
The Always-the-Bridesmaid Award: Don Rotolo (98 points without a single win this year.)
Funniest Team: Believe it or not, Travis Hoffman acted as a one-man wrecking crew for Delphi E.L.I.T.E., with his 140 points outscoring every other team's combined efforts. The runner-up (and the first team with multiple people entering) is 1501, with 138 combined points.

If you want to run your own analysis of the scores, I've got the spreadsheet on Google Docs http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p1cILXUy2xl0U8qmI_QohSg (here.

Onward!

Darnit! The BCS (Billfred Championship Series) got me in the end. Where's the AP when I need it...
Most Burns: EddieMcD (Nine!)
Needed a tenth... (though for some odd reason, I give a slight evil chuckle seeing so many burn awards to my name)

Anyhow, congrats to Travis. It was a well fought battle, and I can add a silver to my gold and bronze. :D
