Btw, I may have missed this discussion (or forgotten) from the beginning, but what was the reason for having the lists all picked before Kickoff?
Just curious.
Because we all have more important things to do during build season.

And it's more fun to do it off of previous rankings without any input of the mew game or any team's status. The only thing that could make it better is if the lists got locked January 2nd.

That would suck if it got locked. lol
I need to go back & trade on some picks on nights I missed on one of these days.

Has Stephi Rae made a pick yet or is he booted?
Stephi Rae has been dropped from the league due to chronic absenteeism.
Her picks are on a first come first served basis.

Is there a fast way to check if any new teams registered for a given regional?
ATannahill
21-12-2008, 00:23
Know how many there were, subtract the number there are now, is the answer zero? that is also pronounced "no"
Is there a fast way to check if any new teams registered for a given regional?
Not that I know of. The old way FIRST used to list teams on the waitlist would have helped but now that's a big secret that they apparently think is nobody's business but their own. So outside of just realizing that there are more teams there and scanning over the ist for the new team there really is no way to know exactly who is there without a thorough investigation.
Yet another reason for an automatic interface.

For those who have been complaining about this I ask you: When would you think you could get a good idea about a team? When they start posting an endless parade of vague spoilers? The best teams don't even let anyone see their robot til Thursday of the initial competition! Or days before the competition begins when everyone is busy prepping to go and don't have time to participate in a bunch of drafts.
Fantasy FIRST is not the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL where the game is the same year after year after year. We get a whole new game with brand new machines made from scratch and we all have learned what looks good in the shop doesn't mean it's gonna perform on the field. So you're speculating anyways so you might as well do it in December whens there's nothing better to do while your waiting for kickoff (except for participating in the insane task of trying to figure out the game committees vexing riddles). So this is the best it gets guys. Deal with it.

I was asking myself the same question. It seems as if we gonna have a bunch of rookies this year in our regional but I can't figure out how many ....

Actually we were talking about teams that register to a given event late, not new teams to FIRST, new teams to a given regionals.

I see that you are planing on doing the Michigan state championship the weekend before the event. Could that be like the Wednesday before so that we have a better idea of the team list, since there is a district competition the weekend before and teams could very likely get moved in or out based on the results of this competition and the ability for teams to be able to pay their entry fee.

I think it'll still have to be two leagues, even with 70 teams.Yep, it will be.
(Unless more people drop out, but I don't foresee that.)
While it might not seem that trades take place because the revised lists aren't posted, I do have the scoring spreadsheet fully updated. Just because it isn't "officially listed" doesn't mean that it hasn't happened.
(The same goes for those who have been booted. I might not have gotten to the tier, but I still removed them from the scoring sheet.)

I realize that Eric was going to have trouble this week, is that why the West Michigan FIRST Robotics District Competition draft didn't happen? Are you going to need more help?
Are you going to need more help?
If so, I could probably take something over this week.
I'm pretty much out of it for the rest of the drafting. Either work or family stuff interferes. I'll still be able to keep the official who-has-what-teams sheet, but I won't be able to run any drafts until the Michigan State Championship.
The other option is that the drafts are run at midnight EST or WAY earlier than normal. We can't have that now, can we?;)

Tomorrow night.
Sequence of booting, as a reminder: Player(s) miss(es) 4 drafts. The warning is posted on the day of the fifth draft; if the player doesn't draft, he gets a warning PM that night. you could have made lists on your free time and send them instead of selecting during the draft.

We are so close to the end and the players have been active this long, I think its worth it to just let the game play itself out. Going back and picking on a 1st come 1st serve basis for 30 some drafts would give a major advantage to whoever happens to be online when its posted that a player is kicked off.
I'm not the one that sets the rules though.
ATannahill
29-12-2008, 17:44
We spending six weeks building a robot with little sleep, and you can't go through your drafts to see where you could prosper from someone dropping out? It is not that hard, Tottanka and I already have been working on it.

29-12-2008, 17:47
Not sayin' I can't. I'm sayin' I don't wanna! ha ha. No, I'm actually just arguing that Nawaid and others have already put a massive amount of effort to stay in this long, and there will be a huge advantage to those that happen to be online when whoever is dropped. I plan to be on tomorrow since I am running the LI draft, but I prefer not to be accused of winning this year because someone dropped out during the final week.

I plan to be on tomorrow since I am running the LI draft, but I prefer not to be accused of winning this year because someone dropped out during the final week.
Making the lists took me like 10 minutes.
I simply searched the Fantasy First forums for every thread with my nickname + the possible booted persons nickname, and went over it with the lists i made for every regional.
And you don't have to worry about being accused of winning at all :D This year that would not be the case :)

Thats smart, I just copied all of the urls of my drafts into an excel file, didn't take much longer but it's a lot of blue links to make you dizzy.

It is very hard to disagree with you this year. So far it looks like to me JackN should take home the Elgin Clock Award, but we shall wait and see.
I also have been searching the same way when others have dropped.

I wouldn't count on the random if i were you though... you could have made lists on your free time and send them instead of selecting during the draft.
There's an award named after me (I guess. lol I still have to laugh about that one kind of) because of a completely random pick a few years back.
Team 67 (http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv/team.php?team=67) did quite well in Atlanta in 2005 & was a 3rd round random pick for me if I recall correctly. ;)
I like fate at times & not always spending a lot of time making a list that will just not be used because others pick the teams ahead of me on a certain night.
You can see why.
And, free time?!?!? What's that?
I'm lucky I'm here to pick in person as much as I am.

I stand on my old ground, but I do realize the need to maintain rules as rules. Others were kicked out, that were more active. It really isn't that hard to send in 5 teams for every draft, or just let us know that you'll take the randomizer on a few.
I go along with Barry, it's so late in the game. I would let them be.
If that's the case then why not make exceptions for others? Stephi Rae was stuck in an airport for 18 hours and didn't have internet for days. Should I let her back in as well? What about others who were booted?
Rules are rules guys. if I make exceptions for one then I have to make exceptions for everyone!

Just give me randoms. I'll be in NH (preferably without any broken or bruised body parts after a long day of snowboarding - HA!) when you're running this.
There will be a nice window to trade teams out though after I get back including, but not limited to, Saturday night (Jan 3rd) though, correct?

JackN, Lonestar Tier 2, second pick. I didn't get your list for that one.
Greg Peshek, Hawaii Tier 1, second pick; Vegas Tier 2, second pick. Both have a team picked twice.
NickE, 10000 Lakes Tier 2, third pick. No team is picked.

The other option (which I don't really want to do) is redraft with 5 tiers instead of 4. We'll see what Ed says.
Your attention please!
Yesterday, with CD down, I started wondering: What other events are missing teams? Well, I've got a lot of events, and a lot of missing teams. Sometimes, people are missing more than one team, too. (Elgin, this means YOUR Dallas alliance--none of them are on the list anymore.)
Within the next 24 hours or so, I'll post a list of who's missing what where. Once the list is posted, it is your responsibility to draft new teams before the lists are locked.
As promised, here is the list.
The following players need to replace any listed teams before the rosters are locked, for the reason that that team is not on the list anymore (unless otherwise noted):

Waterloo is listed above. If you’re on that list, add your missing teams there to your list of teams to replace here.
NOTE: I think some of the teams are simply mis-typed, somewhere along the line. However, I am not totally sure which ones are simple typing errors and which are definitely not coming. If it's a simple mistype, just drop me a PM and I'll take care of it immediately. Please make any changes before Ship Date; if you have not made changes by then, I will remind you once.
Teams that are not replaced by the time the rosters for their week are locked will be replaced by a random team!
Incidentally, at one point, everyone was on the list. Then Vikesrock replaced the missing teams on his list.

Is this based on the threads or your excel file?
also do you know if any of these teams were removed from the season totally?
Is this based on the threads or your excel file? The Excel file and the FIRST website. I have done my best to make sure that the Excel file is current to the threads. As in, if I saw a FF thread on the portal during the drafting/trading season, I checked it against the spreadsheet, and changed the spreadsheet accordingly. The version I have now is different than the posted one, due to recent changes and the massive check I just did.
As for the other question, I've seen several of them in other events--my guess is that most of the teams decided they couldn't afford to go to another event and dropped one. The exception would be 118 and Dallas--they're going to DC instead, I think. I don't really know or care if they've been dropped totally, at least for FF purposes.

Not quite--Waterloo still needs a trade.
As a reminder, Waterloo has its own list.
And any trade requests will be taken care of in the sheet, even if they aren't shown in the thread.

How long after ship day will the list for week 1 regionals lock?
How long after ship day will the list for week 1 regionals lock?
All lists lock when announced; usually early morning of the practice day for the event. So the real question is, how long after ship date do the Week 1 regionals start? (No, I don't keep track of that very much...)
Now that the list is more manageable, I'm going to integrate the Waterloo list.

For those that don't have a replacement in a tier, you're the first in line to get one if another team shows up. Though I'd kind of like to know how to score it if no team shows up.

Please, please, check your teams. A number of you still have known draft issues. If you just want random teams, that's just fine; let me know so I can deal with it before I have to score the event.
If you can't read it, let me know and I'll tell you which events you have issues in.
I may or may not do final checks the week(ends) before each event, so from this point on, your teams are your responsibility to watch for.

Hello, Fantasy FIRSTers!
With less than one week before the Week One drafts lock, six people have yet to choose replacements for missing teams in the week. The scoring staff (me) would greatly appreciate your choosing replacements before the drafts lock.
If you have any of the following teams at the listed events, please either choose a new team or let me know that you want a random team. If you say that you want random, I will apply that to all missing teams that you have unless otherwise specified. No response will get you a random team for the event in question to replace the missing team. You will not be notified of which team you get until the list is re-released.
Week 1:
Buckeye: 1626, 1075, 2166
Midwest: 1770, 3030
Oklahoma City: 425, 1863
Reminder: The Michigan Championship will draft April 1. This is to allow the maximum time for teams to say they are coming. The tier lists will probably be released during the Week 5 events.
I will release the scores each week, if I have internet access. I will be traveling around the time of Week 2/Week 3, but should still be able to post scores and issues.
Week 1:
Buckeye: 1626, 1075, 2166
Midwest: 1770, 3030
Oklahoma City: 425, 1863
Add Traverse City: 94, 835
I know that one of the people with 94 has already picked up another team.

Theoretically, those are already locked. There are ways to change events/drop out at the last minute, though. It has been the case that a registered team didn't show up for whatever reason and didn't drop out before the last second.
If it's the Wednesday before the event, it's pretty safe to say the list is locked. That's why we lock ours the Wednesday night before the event.

Alright, I got the team scoring done except for a few things.
Buckeye second day awards and tournament results don't seem to be up.
I'm not sure which teams the WFA's at NJ or OK are from.
The last thing is, are wins/losses only counted from Quals or are Elims included as well? Right now I have it as only from Quals.

Total W/L/T record. TBA calculates that automatically, IIRC.

The mentor for NJ is currently on team 2180.
I would like to remind all participants to check their own lists against everyone else's in their tier. Sometimes it happens that a team is double-picked and people who notice issues (all of you) miss it. This happened in BAE Tier 1, and was only noticed during scoring (i.e., about 5 minutes ago).
When this happens, I don't like my alternatives: ignore it or give a random team that may or may not be better. I will usually grab the first team that isn't picked off the random list, no matter the reason they aren't picked. The random team will always go to the second person to get the double-picked team. This random team may be worse than the team you had! This was the case in BAE.
Any replaced teams will not be posted; however, they will be in bold when the score sheets come out each week. They will then revert to normal text the next week.
Edit: I am also removing tier indicators from events that have been completed.
Edit #2: You know how Barry was saying that he found it ironic that he was the standard and was struggling, a few months ago? He's in first by about 40 points right now. Then again, 7 players are within 100 points. The real irony is who's currently in last. Hint: the award for the top player after regionals are done is named for him.
Then again, I've only done 3 events, and Buckeye isn't ready yet.

Update: Pre-OKC and Buckeye scoring, Vikesrock is in the lead by almost 100 points over Barry, who has another 100 points on me, and after that, it gets into a battleground with Alex in 4th and Ed in 5th.
I have asked CDers for help on the Buckeye Saturday awards, as well as the team of the OKC WFFA winner. I expect to finish either later tonight (much later) or sometime tomorrow.
Edit: I've gotten a fair piece into the Buckeye scoring. About the only thing I have left is the awards. That could take a while. I won't finish scoring until I have all the data... Worst comes to worst, I release the scoring sheet missing 2 events, which are either added later or ignored.

I'm sure I'll start falling back to the pack soon enough. I got really lucky to get 45, 234 and 118 for DC and both 111 and 217 for Midwest. 2753 carried NJ for me.
I'm not particularly confidant about my picks for next week so we'll see how it goes.
Real quick: Alex and Pat, you each lost 39 in San Diego.

I'll take the best or second best random, like Alex (I'm too lazy to check if we're in the same tier).
If you're both missing 39, you aren't. You'll actually get the 2 best randoms that remain, as 675 isn't there either.
Edit: Make those randoms 2193 and 2543.
Seeing as Ed hasn't locked the drafts yet, and it's late Wednesday night...
All Week 2 drafts are now locked! Missing teams will be replaced with random teams; expect the replacements to be up tomorrow night, or with the full sheet.
Good luck to all participants!

I appreciate everyone's effort in scoring, I have been mad busy lately. I'm surprised I am closing the gap instead of widening it, I feel like I've had some regionals where all three of my picks didn't even make it in eliminations.
I'm betting Vikerock's name will be on the Elgin Clock Award this year, he is putting more effort into updating his pick list week to week.
I'm still scoring Week 2 (having a long competition with no time to spare will do that to you), but I am going to post the Week 3 issues list. And it's a large one...
SamSofa330, SVR 3rd pick
Michelle Celio, LA 2nd pick, Pittsburgh & SVR 3rd picks, Israel 2nd pick
Elgin Clock, Dallas all picks, Florida 2nd pick
Liz Smith, Dallas 1st pick, LA 2nd pick
Arefin Bari, Florida 1st pick, Peachtree 3rd pick
Nawaid Ladak, Dallas & Florida 3rd picks
Once again, if you haven't picked a replacement for a missing team, one will be chosen for you from the random list.
In conjunction with my Java OPR GUI, I'm going to work on an automated scoring mechanism for FF. (Man I love OOD) I should be able to test it by Week 6, so maybe we can automate it via Twitter or CD-Spy when the Championships arrive.

Partly because I'm not quite sure how.
Just to be clear, I'm scoring the participants, not the teams. I have 3 events left for the week; next week's should be faster.

I was looking through the FF pick sheet and realized that I have 2520 for both the Hawaii and Vegas regionals in the same week. Now I would be thoroughly impressed if they could do that, however.. I think there was just a clerical error along the way, I should have 2443 for Hawaii instead of 2520. So if that could be fixed on whatever master sheet there is, that'd be awesome.
Good catch, Greg.
I'll have the current sheet up shortly, soon as I check on a couple of teams and make corrections as needed.
Also: The scoring sheet that Vikesrock posted is incorrect for the Oregon regional seeding points. To fix: Select the entire sheet and sort by seed, lowest to highest. Then apply the following points:
20 for the 1st seed
12 for 2nd and 3rd
6 for the rest of the top 8
3 for 9th -12th
2 for 13th-16th
0 for everybody else.
This is the only problem I've seen so far, and it looks like a simple mis-selection somewhere in the sorting process.
Full details are in the same place as last time. Breaking news is, it looks like Barry is now in the lead by 18 points over Vikesrock.

I give a random team in place of the no show. Depending on how thorough I'm in the mood for, it could be the next team on the official random list or simply a team from the list, provided they're showing up. What the team is won't be announced, but they will be bolded on the spreadsheet, which again will show up sometime either tomorrow or Tuesday, with Tuesday more likely due to homework.

Oh man... I knew that Tottanka was coming up and would pass me, but you Jack. I didn't think it would happen. Let's see how the next week plays out. I have a Strong alliance in Philly... I am expecting at least two champions to come out of my three teams.
With that... Has anyone ever selected the entire winning alliance?
With that... Has anyone ever selected the entire winning alliance? No better than 2/3, at least during the Season Long events. The real trick is to get the RCA/regional winner, plus another regional winner, and have a regional finalist, and that might have happened once.

Yep, I managed that for DC with 234, 45 and 118. This alliance did take an incredible amount of luck to assemble however.
I guess it's that time of week again...
Consider Week 4 locked for trading. At this point, only random teams will be assigned for any Week 4 events (and Israel).
And for Week 5 the following should probably trade some teams:
SamC (formerly SamSofa330), GTR 1st
rocketperson44, Vegas 1st
NickE, Palmetto 1st
Michelle Celio, Palmetto 1st
Liz Smith, Lone Star 1st
Indysam, Palmetto 2nd

Just when I think I put up a pretty high score of 707 (including Michigan districts, 576 without Michigan) and that there's no way anyone passed, Barry goes and gets 737 (not sure if that includes districts or not). I'd be a lot closer in the final scoring if I hadn't completely failed Week 2, meh. Anyway, good job Barry.
