It's time to start up season two. Season one was a big success and season two should be even better! So sign on up.
Before you do a disclaimer:

Please make sure you have the time to devote to 44 drafts within a one month period. I'm not going to require 44 lists (yet) because I don't even know what weeks the regionals are on but what I will do is if you miss five drafts in a row (that means if you don't make one pick or have sent me a list) you will receive a PM from me. If I don't receive a timely response (24 hours) you are booted from the league!
I would rather have a league of a dozen dedicated participants than a hundred who think participation is hitting the sign up button and never being heard from again. I put in alot of time and effort into this and the least you can do is show up once in a while. So if you cannot dedicate the time do us both a favor and refrain from hitting the reply button.
Thanks.

As a note, I'm already getting ready--I'm setting up the scoring/alliance tabulation sheet. (Remembering how long it took last year to do that afterwards... It'll be much easier to do it as it happens.)

Yeah, if we can stay ahead of the curve hopefully we'll be able to stay on top of things better this year.

This year can the different leagues be randomized so that some people don't consistently get a bunch of good teams for free?

People won't be getting away with that this year because if there are delinquent owners they will be removed.

Ed, how is the new Michigan structure going to affect FF? I might suggest only using the Championship, or doing all the events, as the only fair ways to do it. (Of course, Michigan could be skipped, but that would not be fair to those teams.)

I want to see what the schedule will look like first.

Yep.
We'd best do that.
I want to see what the schedule will look like first.I'm getting a (hopefully) easier to use sheet ready. I don't need a schedule... yet. When one comes out, an hour should have the sheet ready. Does both alliance and score on an event-by-event basis, then totals it up and puts the result elsewhere. Next step (after figuring out which events are on which weeks) is streamlining it into weeks.

As a side question-- 5 missed drafts in a row and out: Should that be days, or drafts, due to running multiple drafts on the same day, as we'll need to do to get all the drafts done in time?

I may not be able to attend all the drafts, though:(Which is why you can send in a list of teams before the draft. Put a list of the teams you want in order, PM it to whoever is running that particular draft (or everyone who is running drafts), and when your turn to pick comes up, the first unclaimed team is yours.

Meh, what the heck? I might as well try it. I may not be able to attend all the drafts, though:(

Take note: In the first post I made it clear that if you miss five drafts in a row you could risk getting booted. as Eric had mentioned send a list in to either me or Eric (my right hand man) and we'll take care of it. You can just copy/paste the team list if you must (just be warned you could end up with a very crummy set of teams that way).

As a note to all Fantasy Firsters: Be prepared for 47 drafts, not 44, due to the addition of 4 events in MI and the loss of the NZ Regional.

And yes, you can probably expect 2+ drafts per day. When there's only about a month to do this... On the plus side, we're better prepared this year for drafting.

FYI
For those sour grapes who like to say Barry won because he was in the same division with absentee owners I just want to let you know he's already sending me list for his picks. That's the real reason Barry won because he actually bothered to study on what teams would do well for him and submit a list for EACH AND EVERY DRAFT so he'd make sure he got the teams he wanted.
If you want to beat the best it's sometimes best to BE like the best. Send in those lists kiddies. Barry is already one step ahead of you!

JesseK

I just want to double check -- ideally we will have 47 lists:

Each list has ALL teams from the respective regional
Each list is ordered in the order of team preference

Is that it? I'm still a bit confused on the symantecs of scoring, and I'm really confused on how teams are assigned to players -- e.g. if I get 191 on my fantasy team for a particular regional, does that lock 191 from being used by other players?

Also, what's the desired format of the lists?

EricH
24-11-2008, 12:00
One thing I noticed last season is that the players who actually a) picked or b) sent in lists did better across the board than those who simply went by the randomizer. The top three over the regionals were especially active participants; probably the top 50% had lists. The bottom 50% or so didn't have lists at all and, for the most part, didn't show up.

Also, what's the desired format of the lists?Scoring first: Players will be in tiers based on how many teams there are. If someone in Tier 1 picks team 1114, nobody else in Tier 1 can have them, but someone in Tier 2 can. Trades are allowed, if both players and the commissioner agree.

Lists: As many teams as you want. I usually go to the point that "beyond this, I don't care", but others go all the way. Organize the teams in order of preference; the first team on the list when it's your turn is your pick. Format is up to you, but we do need to be able to read it easily. I use the following: Regional Name: xyz, abc, def, ghi, ... last team number

It bit several people last year...

The traditional scoring system goes something like this:

win +2
tie 1
loss -2

[Award scores follow; none are negative]

But, if you don't pick a team, you get one anyway thanks to the randomizer.

Ed, thanks for the huge props. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, and there is an element of luck to the game, ei: which tier one is in for a certain regional and what the draft order is. Overall, the issue of luck is washed out when picking 44 regionals and everyone has the same chances. The following is a tip from Despair.com
http://images.despair.com/products/demotivators/trouble.jpg It is to one's advantage to send in a pick list and not rely on the randomizer.

As for the question on how long your list should be:
There are usually about 10 people per tier, depending on the size of the regional. Every person gets 3 robots, so multiply the number of people in a tier by 3 and that's how long your list needs to be. Of course, in order to rank teams the more scouting that is done the better.

Ed, correct me if I am wrong, but we should not be concerned about the order of the list as it stands now, because tiers will be randomized and as will draft orders, right?

Michigan FIRST Robotics Competition State Championship draft will occur the weekend before the event.

Ed,
I don't get starting the drafting so early. The main thing that made Fantasy FIRST so much fun is the point of finding out as much as possible about each team and gather information on who has the best idea out there and such. With that in mind, how are we supposed to know team 0001 will be better then team 3333? Drafting this early is all based on previous years performances and such? I think it will be a lot better to have it done at least two weeks into the season, not so early.

Because there is no time to do all this during build season.
People tend to have something better to do then.

Just as long as the teams are in order and somehow separated, you should be good. If you submit for multiple regionals at once, indicate which one is which.

Nawaid, send in a pick list and we'll make sure you get the teams you want if possible.

Oh, yeah-- It's a good idea to hit both Ed and myself with the lists. Right now, I only know of two lists for BAE-- and I'm one of them. (Guess who the other is? Yep, it's Barry.)

Man, I am all for pushing all of the drafts back a week to let everyone catch up. I'm taking the GMAT on wednesday and finals all next week. Week after I have company. I try to dedicate an hour of scouting to each regional, and that's not looking quite possible at the moment. I'm sure as heck not letting the randomizer pick for me, though

I took 2 hours to set up a massive spreadsheet that ranks teams based on last year's performance of the robot and the awards. Plus I added in an additional weight factor (top secret atm ;)). Now it takes me 2 minutes to copy in the teams of a particular regional and rank them accordingly. If I know a team just had an off year last year, or I know insider information about a team, then I'll mess with the order as appropriate.

If you get some spare time, it may be of value to try this.

Might be a good idea.

Also, a PSA:
When you submit your lists, both Ed and I need to get a copy. The reason is that it's kind of hard to send 20+ lists back and forth to make sure that both of us have your list. It's a lot easier to indicate a second recipient, and then we both get the same list. Thank you.

Good luck to the participants! These two messages were posted Sunday and Monday.

They're buried in the 2008 season long FF thread. You have to open the excel file and click on one of the 'total points' cells, but it's there.

if you miss five drafts in a row (that means if you don't make one pick or have sent me a list) you will receive a PM from me. If I don't receive a timely response (24 hours) you are booted from the league!

I am curious if this is being enforced?

EricH
05-12-2008, 23:34
I am curious if this is being enforced? It is. There are about a dozen individuals who should be getting PMs shortly. I know who they are. Ed knows who they are.

We're being a little on the gracious side; I personally don't think it's quite fair to penalize someone for missing two drafts when they're on the same day.

By Sunday, I predict that there will be some currently-picked teams up for grabs in all the tiers. Either that, or there will be some very scared participants!

Koko Ed

PM's have been sent out to all violators except lukevanoort who's PM box is full and cannot accept any more messages (if I cannot get him a message then that's not my problem). If I don't hear from them by the end of the DC draft tonight they will be gone.We could be losing up to a dozen players.
If they are booted their picks go back into the pool.

Do you have a time when they should be booted? So we can now and hurry make some new picks for the drafts that have already passed?

Also, there has been a slight schedule change. Finger Lakes will be drafting tomorrow, December 7, instead of Monday.

Ok, so Boston and FLR tomorrow and Oregon by itself on Monday? Just wanna make sure I have things right so I get my lists in on time. Ideally I would just get ahead, but we all know how that real life thing can get in the way.....

The drafts mostly will take place at 7pm. If we change that we'll announce it (I'm too lazy to change the times on the drafts so I just copy/paste and jumble around the order of players with the randomize.

Hey Koko,

Usually I am online later at night and I check CD for new FF threads. Whenever I see a new schedule for a regional, I send you and Eric my pick list. It would be great if schedule for the next day picks can be provided the night before (for example, suppose FLR picks were tomorrow and you would post the schedule tonight). I apologize for the inconvenience.

You are correct. San Diego and Kettering are still tomorrow night. We'll try to get any changes out as soon as we know about them.

BTW, please, please, please send your lists to both Ed and myself! Arefin shouldn't be about to be booted; he sent a list in for Sunday's draft (and I've reminded Ed of that). Though there might be one or two others who I think are on the verge because I don't have anything for them, but Ed has something. Save yourself a PM and send lists to both of us.

I'm in concurrence with Ed on the 2 5-misses-in-a-row-and-out rule. I'm sorry, folks, but if you say "I'm here" but then don't show up, you AREN'T here.

Randomly. I randomize everyone, then split them into tiers; I could also split everyone into tiers, then randomize just as easily. I'm not quite sure how Ed does it.

There were complaints last year/earlier this year that everyone played against the same people every time. By randomizing and then splitting, you reduce that factor.

You do realize that if every draft was done that way, your (Nawaid's) chances of drawing Barry in your tier go through the roof, right? Especially since because to have 4 tiers (the only way to not have you in the same tier), the regional can't have more than 29 teams. Not many have that few!

If you only want to do one regional, you'll have to create your own league for it. This one is called Season Long for a reason--every regular-season event is done, and the results form those determine picking order for the championship. Registration closed December 1, and drafts started then.

Whether you want to do drafts live or by list is up to you; lists are recommended for Season Long so that you don't get booted out. Live drafting is fine too; we treat lists as though you are there and drafting.

Your attention please:

How would you feel about doing three drafts per day over the weekend and into the week?

I will have a hard time doing drafts during the week after Christmas and any drafts I do between the week of Christmas and the Kickoff may easily be at an odd time. Unfortunately, this would cause the drafting to run into the build period, when it's harder to pay attention to Fantasy First for some unknown reason:rolleyes:.

However, for the next week or so, I can do two drafts in one day, with different start times. If this works out, it'll be more work during a short burst of time, but you'll get a bit of a break during the holidays. More importantly, it'll reduce the lateness of completing the drafting process.

So, what do you think? Should we do an extra draft each day for the next week, or not?

Uggghhh, I'm starting finals now and they run until Wednesday. I would prefer not to add any more drafts during that period if possible.

I would be willing to help out and run some drafts after my finals are done if that's what you need.

I am even willing to run a draft on fridays, saturdays, or anytime after dec. 19th, if that helps.

Can we just release the lists earlier, & have the same times & set dates for required picking times??

The Dallas draft ran real quickly yesterday, & I was able to actually pick earlier than the scheduled time which worked out VERY WELL for me. (Since I wasn't going to be around my scheduled time) - Same with this weekend actually, since I have a weekends worth of FLL things to do which will run into the time we are supposed to pick... Ughh...

If we can have the times stay the same, but release the lists a lot earlier (Noon-ish or even the day before) then that would speed some along in my opinion.

Dare I even suggest that you can even release ALL the rest of the lists tomorrow & then let them flow until they fill up, or have to be interveined by the commisoners to move them along by a random pick.

Whatever you guys decide will work for me, just if we ARE going to go into the build season, or even before, give a couple of days notice for each tier list so we can have something ready. I know I will be away from the computer for a couple days around kickoff while I am up in NH & don't want to get booted because I missed a few picks, or didn't respond to a PM.
Same thing with Christmas day & New Year's eve & day.

I could see doing 3 drafts a day on the weekends maybe, but during the week it is more difficult for me. Also if we are planning on doing three a day would it be possible to know tiers and such for picking a day early?

Joe G.
12-12-2008, 16:04
3 a day would be bad here at the moment, due to semi-long term power outages due to ice as of now. I'll try to get as many done as possible during brief periods like these that I have computer access, and once all this clears up, I'd be fine with 3 a day.

I could try my hand at running a couple of drafts, very late in the season would be best.

I agree that whatever we do, releasing tiers and lists early can't hurt.

EricH
12-12-2008, 16:37
Releasing tiers early could be done. Not all at once, but say, up to two days in advance?

Also, bear in mind that you don't have to submit just the lists for the day. Several people could get away with not showing up for a while because we've got several upcoming lists for them--the FIRST site has the teams.

General consensus is that 1) we don't want to get behind schedule and draft during build, 2) 3 drafts a day might be a bit much during the week, 3) there are several people willing to help out.

So, here's a revised solution:

This weekend, go with 3 per day. I run 2 at different times, Ed runs 1.
One of Monday's drafts is early (or a "trial run" for a new draft runner).
This week, two a day, but maybe a third one every now and again to stay up/make sure we don't lose time.
Find another person to run drafts while doing the above. Said draft leader would start sometime this week/weekend, and do more after the 19th.The reason for the last one is simple: as FIRST adds more events, FF has to add them too. As more events are added to our schedule, having more people that can run a draft reliably becomes important--it's possible that in the near future, we have to do two per day, every day, to keep up, and nobody can keep that up.

What do you guys think?

I think a reasonable deadline for a solution is the end of tonight's draft; if you guys like the solution, Silicon Valley would be added to tomorrow's schedule and Sunday would have Wisconsin, Israel, and Arizona. After that, the entire schedule slides up a day with the exception of Palmetto or Seattle.

I am having a hard time keeping up with drafts as is, I would be happy to volunteer my efforts while I'm in Oklahoma and have nothing to do. I would just need draft lists sent to me.

FTC 1902 has a competition tomorrow, and I will not be near a computer with internet

I leave for Oklahoma next Thursday, and will be there until the day after kickoff. I will be able to use my parents' computer

Slight revision:

Saturday, normal. Release tiers/events for Sunday.
Sunday, three drafts. Release tiers for Monday.
Monday, 2-3 drafts. Depends on response. One will probably be early, regardless.
Rest of week, 2 drafts/day. At some point, one or two or more volunteers run one or more drafts.
As scheduled, with any later revisions. New drafters help greatly here.If you're interested in running drafts, say something either here or via PM. I should note that it takes me about an hour to set up for a draft, and I usually have the randomized list ready before I start. (I have three right now, ready to go.) Then, of course, there's the time in the draft and the post-draft cleanup. Figure about 2-3 hours total, plus any randomizing time.

Right now, the question is, How many drafts on Monday? Current consensus is 2, and any more depends on when the tiers are released. If there is strong disagreement on this, speak up!

One note to all participants: There is no rule saying that you can't send in all your lists at once (some people already have, in fact). So if you want to deluge us with lists, go ahead.:] You don't have to wait for tiers to be announced.

M, W, F, S, S, are almost impossable for me to do, because I am working on those days usually

the best bet would be something along the lines of 3 drafts during the weekend and 2 drafts per night, one starting at 7PM EST and another starting at 7PM PST I think taht would be the best way to make it work, for the weekends, maybe 1, 4, and 7 PM EST would be great

(That, and having the week after Christmas be my jury duty week, when my schedule could go south at any time...)

I'll think about those times. What will probably happen is that two drafts are at the normal time (7 PM EST) and one is either earlier (say, 4:30 - 5PM EST) or later (say, 9 PM EST).

The weekend schedule:
Dec 13Peachtree Regional , Pittsburgh Regional (both at 7:00 PM EST)
Dec 14Silicon Valley Regional , Wisconsin Regional, Israel Regional (Time TBD--will depend on who does them and when they're open.)

I'll have to review the rest of the schedule and talk it over with Ed and anyone else running drafts. Someone should post it sometime before Sunday night's draft(s).

Perhaps next year we'll have enough events to justify one big draft at the beginning, where you pick, say, 10 teams and play N in any given weekend. That could be discussed next year though.

Roughly a total rethink of the FF system, not that that's a bad thing.

What would be better would be Brandon having more free time (or some help) to get the automated system working. (Yes, there is at least one automated system in the works. No, I don't know when it'll be done.)

You know, i was actually thinking this idea last night... in Fantasy Football or any other sports, teams have bye weeks or some teams play more games than the othen other teams.

I don't see why this can't be done, it might be complicated at first as to how to deturmine how we are going to do this, but im willing to come up with a system that can make it work; ie

for week 3
Lineups must be PM'ed to Koko and Eric by 7PM EST Wednesday night. same with add/drops (those can be posted or PMed but have to be done before 7PM Wednesday)... I can see something like this working

one huge draft would be awesome

Lineups must be PM'ed to Koko and Eric by 7PM EST Wednesday night. same with add/drops (those can be posted or PMed but have to be done before 7PM Wednesday)... I can see something like this working

one huge draft would be awesomeOr, for a more practical version: You draft a total of x teams (where x is less than or equal to the number of events times 3) for a given week. 6 drafts. Any team competing that week is up for grabs. 'Cause trust me, you DON'T want to have to make sure a certain number of teams in a given list are in fact competing that week. I had enough headaches last year with the normal "shuffle" of teams not showing up or managing a last-minute event switch.

You know, i was actually thinking this idea last night... in Fantasy Football or any other sports, teams have bye weeks or some teams play more games than the othen other teams.

In every major sport all teams play the same number of games over the course of a season. A bye week in Fantasy Football is quite different than the situation that would occur here because a bye week is only one week. Making lists for such a format would be pretty much impossible, you would have to have a live draft. A live draft of this magnitude would be nightmarish without an automated system to keep track of the teams and allow players to search the teams remaining.

Eric's idea would be quite a bit more manageable.

When the season long fantasy first idea was first created, it was similar to what you are suggesting. We picked 4 teams and had their scores average based on the number of regionals they attended. The only problem with this is that it took forever to score and there was faulty data for some regionals.

I loved the way these drafts were run and I would love to see a return to this system, I would help someone run it if they would do the scoring.

I was already thinking about doing this, but...

After the season (or maybe after Kickoff), I was thinking of putting a poll out to see how the drafting process was and if there were any improvements that could be made. In hindsight, we can always think better, can't we? So at that time, a thread is put out with some questions and the more answers come in, the better. Or you could ask why something was done the way it was and get a straight answer.

Also, after all the drafts are over and the dust has settled, I plan to publish the Excel spreadsheet with everyone's picks. It's a big one, but I think that having 30 pairs of eyes looking for errors/double picks instead of just one or two will virtually eliminate scoring-time random picks. It will certainly be published again after all regionals are complete for score-checking and draft-positioning purposes.

Perhaps next year we'll have enough events to justify one big draft at the beginning, where you pick, say, 10 teams and play N in any given weekend. That could be discussed next year though.

If you guys want to start up a league like that feel free. This is the kind of league I want to do.This the kind of league I am doing right now. I'm not interested in doing any other kind of league.

I usually send all my lists 3-4 days before the draft, so you can do that...

Send as many lists as you want. There's at least two people who have all their lists in already (as in, before the season).

The following player will receive a warning PM tonight if they don't show up for the draft:

Stephi Rae

Again, if there is no list or pick in response to the PM, the player will be booted from the league and all teams that the player has will be up for grabs.

(Leading off both drafts--there's a really good reason to show up!)

I don't mean to knock those running FF this year, but think a new system would be really nice.

I was originally signed up, but decided to back up because it was simply too much work. I want to do a FF, but having a draft every night is simply too much work. Also, I know on average 15 teams per regional so ranking every team, for me atleast, seemed kinda like a waste. I may get one team I know, but after that it would basically be random and thus my chances of winning would be almost based on chance. I know it was touched on earlier, but I find the way it is run now very confusing and unorganized. I still haven't found the rules and how points are decided. I think this may be a good system, but there are just too many regionals. With the amount of regionals increasing, I think this system will eventually be nearly impossible.

My proposal:
I like the idea of drafting a set number of teams at the beggining of the year and then 'playing' only a couple each week. One problem of this would be one massive draft. So, instead of having one huge league, have a couple smaller leagues (10 or 20 people). You could run them like soccer and have teams move up or down the leagues based on how they did the past year (the first year would be random, but the next year the top 10 teams would be in league 1, the next 10 in league 2...and new teams placed in the last league).

It would work something like this (the numbers probably will have to be slightly altered): If you had 50 people that want to play, you split them up into 5 leagues of 10. Each team would draft 20 teams. You could have 1 round per night for 20 days in december. 200 teams would be drafted (so people shouldn't be stuck with some random rookie team that they know nothing about). Each week at 7 pm on Wednesday, each owner will pick 3 teams to play that week (to make it easier, you could make it impossible for owners to drop/pickup teams). At the end of each week and at the end of the year, points will be tallied and after the championship event, a winner is announced. As the end of the 2nd year, the top 2 teams move up a league, while the bottom two teams move down. (so the best play the best and the owner that wins the top league, is the true FF champion). Since it appears there are several people that are interested in helping, one person could be in charge of each league.

If you want to know the rules, all you have to do is ask. We don't care how big the lists are, just that they are present. (I know I'll take someone saying "Just give me random teams" as a list--the point is to show that you are still an active participant.) Points are awarded according to the FF standard system--2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, -2 for a loss, anywhere between 2 and 42 points for an award, depending on award; seeding has a slightly different range.

It will eventually be nearly impossible for humans to run this. There is a FF addition to CD in the works, but it's been that way for a while now. There is another system in the works as well.

I don't know if your system would work. I do know I wouldn't want to run it. However, as has been previously noted, if you don't like the current Season Long, make your own Season Long with your own rules and have fun.

You do realize that research for the list is not hard, I chugged out all 40 or 50 something over thanksgiving break. Also you will not eliminate someone getting a rookie team they do not know, you still get someone at the bottom. I suggest you actually try and you will find this is not bad.

This is simply one variation of FF, and it is most notably the one that takes the largest time dedication and most skill (especially since the rules have been revised since last year). It is, however, not the only league or the only way to run the game.

This is the only one that is run before the season actually begins, you can expect to see many the week before each regional. This is when more information is known for each team, and you can select which regional in which you would like to participate.

It is not the only form of scoring, the commissioner of the draft puts their own weights on awards.

Other variations to FF:

Pick a limited number of teams for the entire season
Pick teams for one regional
"Free for all" style, where you post what three teams you want on a first come first serve basis, and no one else can pick the same combo.
"Week long" where you are picking 2 teams for all regionals of that week at the same time

I enjoy participating in this style. It forces me to learn more about every team and every regional, and I know I am playing against some of the most dedicated and most informed scouters in all of FIRST. I believe this draft is being VERY well run and am stunned by its efficiency when there are only 2 people doing the entire thing. Are there mistakes? Sure, it is done by humans by hand. The more active a player is, the better one can help minimize mistakes. This is simply the League Ed started, chooses to run, by his rules. I signed up to play because I agree to those rules.

If I have time during the competition season, I may start a different "week long" league by my own rules, and perhaps recruit some help. If one would like to play by different rules, I encourage them to start his or her own league as well, heck I'll probably play if you do.

Now that is out of the way, it couldn't hurt to have this on page 17

Again, I'm not saying this system is bad. I'm saying that you can get similar experence or enjoyment factor with a different system where you only pick 20 teams (opposed 150 or so). I also think more people will join if they only have to pick 20 teams. Maybe my proposal better for the causual fan, who doesn't want to create 50 lists or doesn't have the time, opposed to the hard-core fan. I just think this current system is too daunting and scares too many people, who probably would enjoy FF, away.

This is about teams with registration later than the draft for a particular regional.

I think that in those cases, a first come first get base isn't quite fair.

Idea: go according to the draft, and only if all the people before a selected choice agree, it may go. This way, the draft remains even, though it's a lot of work, which i am willing to take.

Ed and Eric, it's your call.

I disagree, it should not be more work on the drafters if a team joins after the deadline. First come first serve treats everyone fairly because we can all look to see if a new team has joined. Any team that joins after the deadline but before the draft, like right now for the Waterloo Regional, should still be part of the draft.

just make a point to check every once in a while to see if any new teams have joined any regionals, that's all.
Why would you think it's not fair?

Just curious.
