Pucker Power!

Dr. Brown looks awesome in pink, following the 'dress for success' tip - always wear pink when holding a pig - the rest will take care of itself.

Oscar was so cute.

2008 was Paul's year to do the honors. Whose turn will it be in 2009?

Now, now... hang on a sec. While this was a good thing, there is no definite kissing of pigs next year. This might have been a one-time thing. The IRI planning committee is commissioning a special focus group to investigate alternative and unique fund raisers. In the mean time, you can google "cow pie bingo" for one of the ideas.

Some clarifications about this pig and the process:

1. It's a 5-week old gilt. Fultz, for some reason, named it "Oscar". However, the 2 fine ladies at Geist Animal Hospital (where it stayed for 2 days) named it "Suzy Q".

2. The pig came from my step-father's farm in Monticello. He did not want it back, and saw it as a donation. Like many farmers, if livestock leaves their property, they don't want it to return, in fear of disease that could infect their inventory.

3. Pigs squeal. They are pigs. That is what they do. No pig enjoys getting picked up. Both times it was picked up out of the cage, it gave a piercing squeal, and people thought that it was being tortured. It wasn't... it was just being a pig.

4. It was staying in a dog cage for 2-3 hours during the finals on Saturday, in a secluded area next to the main gym. The parents on team 234 kept saying "we are giving her water, but she keeps knocking over the bowl". They learned that that is also what pigs do.

5. The pig is safe at a new home in Peru, Indiana. A friend of mine took Suzy Q home with them Saturday afternoon. They will decide if she will remain a feeder pig or if she will become a family pet. (they have 8 acres of land)

6. People were saying that we should let the pig run around the playing field. I said "no way... that would be funny for about 1 minute, and then frustrating for the next 20 minutes". This is the reason why I never let go of her while Aidan and Paul got involved.

... and I do think the pig liked kissing Paul.

Anyone remember this song?

Oh, Susie Q, oh, Susie Q,
Oh, Susie Q, baby I love you, Susie Q.

I like the way you walk, I like the way you talk,
I like the way you walk, I like the way you talk, Susie Q.

Well, say that you'll be true, well, say that you'll be true,
Well, say that you'll be true, and never leave me blue, Susie Q.

Well, say that you'll be mine, well, say that you'll be mine,
Well, say that you'll be mine, baby all the time, Susie Q.

Oh Susie Q, oh Susie Q,
Oh Susie Q, baby I love you, Susie Q.

I like the way you walk, I like the way you talk,

ps - what the heck is a "gilt" anyway?

My goodness... all of these city folk are just plum ignorant.

Pig 101
Gilt: young female pig, has not had a litter yet
Barrow: young male pig, usually castrated shortly after birth
Sow: older female momma pig
Boar: male daddy pig (not castrated)

Boars and sows make gilts and barrows. Gilts and barrows are the feeder pigs who are sent to market after about 6 months, when they weigh 220-250 lbs. Yes... Suzy Q (aka Oscar) will weigh about 240 in 6 months, if fed properly.

Well, say that you'll be pink, well, say that you'll be pink,

Well, say that you'll be swine, well, say that you'll be swine,
Well, say that you'll be swine, bacon in no time, Susie Q.

Oh, Susie Q, oh, Susie Q,

Pig 101
Gilt: young female pig, has not had a litter yet

City Person 201 (notice a higher level course)
Gilt: What you feel when you do something wrong

Pig 101
Barrow: young male pig, usually castrated shortly after birth

City Person 201 (see above)
Barrow: What you put one round thing and two handles on
(aka - wheel barrow)

Pig 101
Sow: older female momma pig

City Person 201 (see way above)
Sow: part of the sentence "Sow what are you gonna do about that?"

Pig 101
Boar: male daddy pig (not castrated)

City Person 201 (not saying it again)
Boar: people who make statements like
"Here is a slew of information if you wish to learn more" and they are referring to pigs, and they are serious ...
Besides, I would think the non-C'd pig would be less of a boar than the C'd-one.

Boars and sows make gilts and barrows. Gilts and barrows are the feeder pigs who are sent to market after about 6 months, when they weigh 220-250 lbs.

Making babies. I thought this was a family channel...

So, what's a male pig called that's not casterated, but not a proud Daddy yet?
Ya know, those crazy years, when they go off on their own seeking adventure, maybe joining a FIRST team (1902?), going off to college, then building houses out of straw, sticks, & bricks all the while dodging wolves, but at the same time just not quite ready to settle down with a little piggy family yet? LOL

Just curious. There seems to be a huge gray area of missing time for that poor piggy when it's lost & confused as to who he really is.

If it past puberty, uncastrated and not yet a father, it is still a boar I believe.

I just got a Suzy Q pig update from my friend.

Suzy Q is now living at a house with 8 acres of land, as I mentioned previously. 4 kids are in the family, with the oldest being 10. Suzy Q runs around with the 2 farm dogs, and now does not mind being picked up by the kids. She has become "one of the dogs", and follows them around the property. She already knows where to get water and food, and even relieves herself in the same spot.

She knows her name, and comes when she is called. The new owner says that she is smarter than any dog he has seen at her age. He is saying that it may be interesting to bring Suzy Q back to IRI next year so everyone can see how she has grown. By that time, she would probably weigh over 250 pounds... but I am not sure since she spends all day running around with the dogs. She may gain weight at a slower rate than a regular feeder pig, which is confined to a 10x20 pigpen.

I've asked for pictures of Suzy Q with the 2 dogs. They cuddle. I think that this will be a continuing story.

Who wants to guess what Suzy Q's weight will be in 12 months?
Although, we'll have to open it up to guesses of units in both pounds & kilograms so our Canadian friends can have a shot at it as well! :p

You know what might be fun: you could do a FIRST jeoardy/trivia. Have bins with peoples names in it, the 3 people that get the most money in there bins get to compete in the trivia. You could ask questions about the history of FIRST and it's teams, and other related questions.

This is just a random thought. There is probably some reason why it wouldn't work, or something better.

That was most likely because she was overwhelmed. Pretend you're a little pig, coming from a place with only a few humans and little noise, and all of the sudden you're trapped in an arena with thousands of screaming people and lots of noise.
That'd be enough to freak me out. So yes, poor Suzy Q :(

It's time for a Suzy Q update.

Shortly after the 2008 IRI, Suzy Q was moved to Peru, Indiana, and lived in the yard of a rural home. Suzy Q ran with the dogs and minded the owners until she got big and started destroying some things. During these last 10 months, Suzy Q has grown to be a hefty gilt at about 350 pounds. She has stayed in a pen for the last 5-6 months.

This past weekend, Suzy Q got out of her pen (350 pounds of pure muscle is not easy to contain) and rambled over to the neighbor's yard. After getting Suzy Q back in her pen, the owners have realized that she is just too big for them to handle.

Yesterday, the owners were very close to contacting me, as I have offered to buy the pig back and take it to a processing plant (sausage, bacon, chops, etc.). HOWEVER... this same family went to the feed store last night and met a kind lady who is willing to let Suzy Q live on her farm in Amboy, Indiana.

So, the good news is that Suzy Q moved from Peru to Amboy and will live with another pig, 2 goats, a few dogs, and a horse.

The bad news is that the Bakers will need to go to the grocery store for more bacon.
