WAYNE PENN TO EMCEE DUEL ON THE DELAWARE IN 2008
The Duel is honored to have the one and only WAYNE PENN be our emcee for another year.
MICHAEL WADE DUEL MASTER VOLUNTEER AWARD
The FIRST Community does a terrific job of recognizing volunteers and mentors. The planners of the Duel event would like to continue the tradition with the 4nd Annual Duel Master Volunteer Award.
This award is a combination of the FIRST Woodie Flowers Award, FIRST Unsung Hero Award, and the FIRST Volunteer Recognition Award. This award celebrates a FIRST team mentor, who demonstrates the spirit and values of what FIRST is all about.
In honor of Mike Wade, who made the Duel on the Delaware possible by providing his NASA field and much assistance since 2001, this award will now be called the “Michael Wade Duel Master Volunteer Award.” Mike exemplified what we are recognizing with the Duel Master Volunteer Award, so it only fitting that this award acknowledges Mike’s contributions.
Teams attending the Duel on the Delaware will have an opportunity to acknowledge and recognize one of their own for contributions to their team and to FIRST.
Those previously recognized include Dina Campagna - Team 341, and Bob Foell - Team 433.
If your team is attending the Duel on the Delaware on October 11, please consider nominating a team member for this award. Nominations are e-mail only as described in the following attachment and are due by OCTOBER 1st.

SUCCESS WON'T WAIT UPDATE
To finish out 2006, we have a very large project in the works with the
Police Athletic League (PAL) centers of Philadelphia. There are 27 centers
in the city which service the needs of urban schoolchildren ages 6-18. Lt.
Susan Slawson from PAL has partnered with us to provide a reward system
for these kids. Each center will receive a package of approximately 125 books
representing a wide age range. These will be used as rewards for
exceptional behavior.
According to Lt. Slawson, using rewards like this in the past has
consistently inspired amazing behavioral changes (finishing homework
assignments, volunteering for projects, etc.). She also said that many
of these children have NEVER OWNED A BOOK -- something we had a
hard time grasping.
The books that were collected at the third annual Miracle of Reading
Education Book Drive (at the Duel on the Delaware) will help us complete
this project. When finished over 3,000 books, many obtained through
FIRST volunteers, will be available to children from some of Philadelphia's
most economically disadvantaged areas.

You can watch the webcast between classes. :D
I would love to but its just one all day lab then with my hospital lab time after that for the rest of the night :( I hope the blue alliance will have it saved though :)
Duel on the Delaware attendees:
This update is from Susan McNeill, co-founder of Success Won't Wait. The update is provided to communicate where the books your teams graciously donated have gone since you donated them at the Duel on the Delaware Book Drive last October. Having partnered with Susan and Success Won't Wait over the past four years, I can honestly say that the books you donate will go the some of the best causes that can be found in our area and beyond.
We hope that your teams are actively hoarding books for this year's book drive. ;)
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Success Won't Wait Summer Update, 2008
In July 2008, Success Won't Wait embarked on its single largest project yet.
At the request Laura Ellison of AmeriCorps, Success Won't Wait volunteers
spent months sorting through thousands of books for a trip to Lewis County,
West Virginia. Lewis County is one of the poorest counties in the state.
According to Census Bureau statistics, the median income for a household in
the county is $27,066, and the median income for a family is $32,431. Males
have a median income of $27,906 versus $18,733 for females. The per capita
income for the county is $13,933.
There is exactly 1 public library to serve the entire county. This library
had a total collection of only 19,000 books. There are four elementary
schools and one middle school, as well as a senior center -- and all were in
desperate need of books. Success Won't Wait volunteers gathered over 5,000
books which Susan McNeill and her family then drove to the county seat of
Weston, West Virginia. Representatives from all over the state were there to
greet them and deliver the books to the various locations.
Literally, thousands of the books that made their way to Lewis County were
from the Duel on the Delaware Miracle of Education Book Drive in 2007. Your
contributions were immense and so appreciated!
Photos and more information will available soon on the Success Won't Wait
website. You can visit www.SuccessWontWait.org for updated information on
this project and many others.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us with this truly rewarding
project!

In preparing for the webcast I am asking asking for attending teams to send me a layered photoshop image of their team's logo. A copy of the Duel VII logo in the same format would be nice too. I am starting to design overlays and effects that will be used during Duel VII.
We plan on archiving a copy of the webcast to DVD, and it should also be divided into matches and posted to the internet if the Duel staff and resources allow. :D

"You’ve Been Sentenced" Robotics Add-On deck Featured at the Duel
“You've Been Sentenced!” is the first game in history to turn the activity of
sentence making into a very funny, playable, and challenging game.
Using a unique word deck of pentagon shaped cards containing conjugations
of funny words, famous names from throughout history, familiar places, and wild
cards, players have to make grammatically correct and justifiable sentences.
The real fun begins when players have to read their sentences out loud and
explain what they mean to the rest of players. The players form the jury and
vote thumbs up or down on whether the sentence and justification stand and the
points are scored. The basic game features 540 cards with over 2,500 words to
insure billions of possible sentences.
In addition to the card game, the game creator McNeill Designs has developed
an online version of “You’ve Been Sentenced”. The online version of the game
will be featured this year at the Duel on the Delaware. Also featured will be the
new Robotics Add-On deck developed by team 365, MOE. Please plan to join
us at the game table to check out the Robotics deck and test your grammarian skills!

FYI: Duel Music Requests!
Once again, (4th/5th year?) I will be the DJ for the Duel on the Delaware hosted by 316-The LunaTechs & 365-Miracle Workerz.
As usual, I ask that you send all music requests to dueldj@gmail.com
Please do not overpower this thread by posting here, as I most likely will not be able to check it for requests this year.
I am much busier than in past years between work and Uni. If you could please make sure the music is **clean** before requesting, I would be most appreciative. Also, I was living at camp (no internet/itunes) all summer... so if you have any summer favorites you would like to hear, please request them.
**Clean** means that it is playable around children, teens, AND adults. For example...
"Teenagers" - My Chemical Romance = NOT CLEAN (Cursing)
"Shake It" - Metro Station = CLEAN

Well, it's a week and a half before the Duel. Our bus driver is checking the suspension and the springs on his bus. We're packing boxes....along with Chuck, of course.
Are we going to meet or exceed??? Are we going to get anywhere near???
We've done a ton! :D We've done two ton!!:ahh: We've even done two and a half ton!!! :yikes:
What are we going to do this year???
We'll bring books...don't know how many yet. More than I thought...I thought we had drained this county dry of books last year, but even I was fooled. We found enough to beat our previous record! I have no idea what we'll bring this year, but we're working on it.
Anybody out there bringing books??? How many? :D

How are you doing the weight? An estimate or did you put them on a scale?
You're trying to give us a run for our books, aren't you???

How are you doing the weight? An estimate or did you put them on a scale?
You're trying to give us a run for our books, aren't you???
Our final count is 2,100 pounds. We weighed every box (rounded to .5 pound on our robot scale) and subtracted a conservative estimate for box/container weight. The pile is eating up a fair amount of space in my classroom and is big enough that I'll be delivering the goods on Friday (Thanks Duel organizers!!!), otherwise we would have needed to leave the robot at home on Saturday :)
However, I have no doubt that 84 will find a way to exceed that 2,100 and it wouldn't be the first time 1712 lost out to 84 (this time, it's a far better cause, though :))

Way to go DAWGMA! Looks like, for now, 2,100 lbs is the book weight to beat!

Well, Mr. K, we've never been that scientific about it. We just measure by how full the bus was last time and how full it is this time.
We'll make a judgment call on Friday night when we pack the bus.
Anybody out there going to do better than Dawgma?

Have you tried VLC (http://www.videolan.org/)? I haven't tried it on this specific stream, yet but VLC handles most formats you throw at it. The Mac version of VLC has less features than windows and linux but still should work.

So I just put in the url of the webcast and I'm good to go?
If VLC is your default player then all you will have to do is click on:
Web cast of Duel VII (External Player)
on the website (http://asp.shinraikon.com/duelvii.aspx)
If not, open VLC and click on Open Network Stream (under file menu) and enter this URL:
http://www.nishinsei.shinraikon.com/DuelVii.asx
And it should open the stream
I am glad you are interested in the webcast and I know with the Tigertrons crew it will be a success.
We also have an embedded Meebo Chatroom on the portal page. Just click on:
Web cast of Duel VII (Embedded Portal)
and join the discussion. I will try to get online with my laptop and join the room. Maybe if the announcers are willing, we could get the announcer game going for a bit (major hat tip to Paul, Karthik, and Jonathan at Waterloo (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66119), most entertaining webcast ever) :D

Talk to ya tomorrow,

Another fun Duel yet again. We had some problems at the beginning of the day but apparently 222 liked us enough to pick us. We are pro ;). But, I knew it would be us against Moe at some point because in eliminations its always us against Moe. Theres were some pretty instense matches. See everyone going to Jersey there. I dont know where else we are going.

Great day! Great time time had by all. Our newbies had a fantastic intro to FIRST Robotics.
John, you and your crew ran a top notch event, as usual.
357, thanks for choosing us. 1647, thanks for joining us. It was a great run to the semis!
We're checking out trailers for next year's load of books. This time, I know we'll have to go out of county.
We'll be at Ramp Riot. See you then!
I only figured out my travel plans to Duel at 11pm friday night. I'd never been to a Duel before. I'm so so so glad I went, even if I was only there for the first half of the day.
Thanks to the awesome MC, Wayne Penn, for letting me jump in for a few matches. Thanks to everyone in the stands for tolerating me as I learned to MC.
:)
Unfortunately, due to the fact that i'm going to college next year, I may not be back at Duel for a little while. It was an excellent event though, and I hope to be back...someday.

I know I sound like a major loser... I'm total team noobie. Chuck didn't place right? lol. I don't quite understand the whole competetion thing yet.
Thanks to all the volunteers, Team 365, Team 316, Team 222 and everyone else that played a part in making DoD an awesome event. I also wanted to say thank you to NASA, Rob Thate, and Ron Karpinski. Without their help these events could not happen.
Thanks to Team 365 for selecting us and to 75 and 422 for being great partners. Congratulations to Teams 25, 555, and 1089. It was fun battling with you guys in the semis. And special thank you to Chuck 84 for bringing 7,000 lbs of books and for baking 7,000 lbs of cookies for our team. You guys are too kind.
Our team had a blast, learned a lot, trained some new drivers, and made some new friends. That's what the off-season is all about.
We are already looking forward to next year's DUEL!

First of all thanks to Moe and the Lunatecs for putting on a great competition! Our team had a great time. Thanks to our alliance partners 816 and 2558. Those were three intense quarter final matches! Can't wait for the next Duel! Hope to see many of the teams at BE and Ramp Riot!
We found a small, striped canvas bag containing 5 books, the type you might read for your English literature class. If you wish to claim it, PM me.
What a great event! I'm so glad I took the 18 hour detour from my weekend trip to Dover to attend and volunteer! As always it's great to see old friends and make a few new ones!
Play of the Day Award
Team 2558 - righting their partner during Qualification matches
(Team 25 also did this in eliminations)As a referee, this was indeed the best play and also made for the most memborable conversation... It was in my quadrant that 007 fell over. The head ref, Sunny Hung came over an looked at the bot lying on its side:
Sunny: Did anyone knock it over?
Me: Nope, it just went over on its own.
Sunny: Do you think it's out?
Me: yep, I think so. (At this point we are both just standing there looking at it when the other robot approaches and gives 007 a little nudge. 007 pops up, sways a little bit and then takes off.)
Sunny: Or maybe not. (And he goes back down the line to watch the rest of the match.)
Cynette:
Thanks so much for dropping by our little party. Hope you had a nice time and a safe ride back. You are welcome to volunteer at the Duel anytime! Great to have someone from Rolling Thunder dropping by the Duel!

Thank you to 365 and 316 for hosting an awesome Duel on the Delaware! It was super mega awesome and tons of fun.
Also big thanks to 1712's alliance partners (316, 007 and 87) you guys were supercool. :D
And to all volunteers, thanks for making this such a fun and well-run event. Congrats to the winning alliance (25, 555 and 1089) and the finalist alliance (375, 272 and 1640). You guys were fabulous.
