Several teams have asked for additional information on this year’s Tempest ‘N Tampa so I thought I would start a thread to make sure I get all the questions answered.

Once again, the TNT Robotics Competition will be held in the SUN DOME arena on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of mentors and students from several FIRST teams we are able to expand the offerings at TNT to include a multitude of robotics competitions and workshops.

The FRC Overdrive competition will be a 2-day event starting Friday, Oct 24th with set-up and practice matches throughout the evening; a Team Lock-In at the Sun Dome on Friday night for any FRC team that wishes to save money on lodging costs; and the qualifier and elimination matches on Saturday, Oct 25th.

For FTC we will be hosting the Traveling Roadshow which includes workshops and demonstrations of the new FTC control platform. We will also have a field available so that attending FTC teams can practice and work on their designs.

Our FLL offerings are two-fold. First, there will be an official FLL Qualifier held on Saturday. Registration for the qualifier should be done through the main FLL webpage. Secondly, we will be hosting a series of hands-on workshops for Lego League teams. For more information, please see the FLL event page for TNT here, http://www.roboticsboosters.com/tnt/schedulefll.html.

We are also pleased to offer a VEX competition demonstration and workshop on that Saturday. We will have a full field set up for teams that have begun construction on their Vex robots.

The cost for TNT is $300 for FRC teams, $25 for FLL teams entered in the Qualifier, free for everyone else.

Please visit our event website for more information and the registration form, http://www.roboticsboosters.com/tnt/. If you have any additional questions you can post them here or contact me at the information below.

Last year at TNT we wanted to have a LAN party for the students to give many of them something to do during the lock-in. You guys all came through and brought your systems, controllers, games and monitors and it seemed to go pretty well.

This year we are looking to do the same, but bigger and I wanted to gauge the response and participation from you all. If you are interested in a LAN party at the lock-in this year, please respond with the following information:

Are you interested? (I know, I know, I asked to only respond if you were)
What game(s) do you want to play?
Are you willing to bring your own system?
Are you willing to bring your own monitor?

Right now the plans have been oriented toward the Xbox 360, but there's no reason players can't bring along their PS3s and do the same.

I didn't get to go to TNT last year, I'm excited to go this year!

I like the idea of a LAN party, but what about laptops? If anyone has Empire Earth, Age of Mythology or Red Alert I would definitely challenge them to a match. (I love RTS games)

Not volunteering this time... (gotta work late... speaking of which... you should all think about going to Howl-O-Scream that weekend if you can spare the time and money... :) ) but that will be a good thing, since then I will actually be able to SEE people and hang out! :) Very exciting... (for those of you who remember me, at least...)

I hope you all enjoy USF when you come... the weather's been really nice lately. ^^ And if you have any questions about campus or what going to school here is like and such... feel free to ask. :) I'll be in a pink shirt both days (gotta stay true to my roots...)

(Alternatively, that's why phones have alarms.)

Gas is plummeting around here, which makes me happy--filled up for $2.69 yesterday, down to 2.66 today. What's dinosaur juice going for down in Tampa, for those coming by ground?

There's going to be plenty of entertainment for everyone staying at the lock-in and there's plenty to do around town for those of you who aren't (and for Saturday night).

MOSI right across the street is running discounts for attendees and their families and is having a few special showings of The Dark Knight in IMAX. Cehck out http://www.roboticsboosters.com/tnt/scheduleaccom.html under Entertainment for a flyer with more information.

And definitely don't forget Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens.

For those hosting off-season events, I've attached a scoring/ranking Excel spreadsheet that we developed for TNT that maintains real-time rankings. It's set up for 30 teams - 3 on 3 matches, but is expandable if needed. Just enter the teams competing and import/enter the match parings. As scores for each match are entered it will automatically calculate win/loss/tie records, QP and MP. The ranking sheet then displays the team rankings. Unfortunately, currently the ranking sheet requires the user to run the sort command interactivelty after each match, but the sort order criteria is already set.

Note: Please rename the attachment from .doc to .xls as the forum has a 150KB limit on .xls files.

All,

For the LAN party Team 1902 is planning on bringing 4 XBox 360s, however we need XBox 360 Controllers and monitors or standard televisions with Composite or Component video inputs. We need 2 televisions/monitors, please reply if you can bring one.

Thanks,

Hey TNT folks,

There is a very credible rumor that a full 6-player set-up of the 5th Gear Overdrive simulation will be up and running for the TNT lock-in and perhaps for the entire TNT. 5th Gear debuted at the NASA/VCU Regional's Technology Row NASA/VCU Champs (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=714961&postcount=1), came out of retirement for a summer encore at IRI, and is now on its way to a winter appearance on Florida's beautiful Gulf Coast.

Does any team or multi-team alliance out there have the "thumbs" become the new kings of the hill? At IRI, Wildstang (with CyberBlue hot on their heels) set the bar pretty high with a high score of 234 on the simulator (IRI 5th Gear Champions (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=757675&postcount=462)).

Also, I/we would be very interested in hearing from any allied teams or solo drivers at TNT who practice strategies using the simulator. We hope that rookie drivers can use the simulator to get a feel for the pace of the real Overdrive game, to get a sense of how the field's walls and other robots can block your view during matches, to get a feel for when to chase a ball or do something else, etc.

I'm looking forward to reviewing the replay files.

Be sure to thank Tom, Sarah and the rest of the TNT and Exploding Bacon crews for making this piece of TNT possible.

Blake (and David and Dave)

I don't see why not. Individuals can be the teams. If needed you can just set it up as 2 on 2 or even 1 on 1 matches. I think you can even use names instead of team numbers. Make sure to download the spreadsheet again. I've updated it to use the number of matches played instead of a constant for calculating QP.

Yeah. It's pretty much the only way to get there. Be careful though, mind all the turns. I was on 75 last month and there was random construction projects!
I'm going tomorrow though. But, things can change in less then 24 hours, though.

Are there enough projects on I-75 to make someone coming from north of Jacksonville want to stay on I-95 instead and get there via Orlando? Google Maps says it only adds 31 miles and 17 minutes--but if I'm gonna be caught up in any heavy construction traffic, the diversion would be worth it.

I'll be iPhoning it after this post--hooray, GPS!

No, there aren't that many major projects. But if it rains like the forecast I saw then it could be bad. But, I wouldn't worry too much. Just be careful of uneven lanes. No matter what the weather. :)

Well, I just called one of the mentors from 1902, Sarah Plemmons, and she told me the winning alliance. She also sounded like there are some terrific stories to be shared.

But - this is what she said as far as the winning alliance. If I get this wrong, you guys can yell at me later. :)

Winning alliance:
233, 744, and 1999

They competed against:
801, 79, 2425

It went to 4 matches to determine the winner:
Red Alliance won, then Blue, then tie, then Blue Alliance won.

Sounds like a blast! Also, sounds like the rookie teams who participated had a great time.

Thats two years in a row that I've called the tie. :D

But the event held up to the high standards it made last year. The competition was great, the fun time was most definitely fun, and the energy of everyone- volunteers, students, mentors, etc- just made the event all the more awesome. I want to say thanks to 744 and 1999. 744 played some great matches, with and without their arm, and 1999 did their job perfectly playing some fantastic defense.

Great event, great teams, great people, great volunteers (not to mention extremely helpful and kind), I mean just everything was awesome. What more can you ask for?

Wow! TNT was an amazing event. 744 had a ton of fun there, so thanks to everyone that helped make the event possible, especially to team 79, the host team. Thankyou 233 and 1999, you all were great alliance partners. Both drive teams were very easy to communicate with and did a great job executing strategy. 233 and 1999 are two great FIRST teams to work with. Also, to all the teams we played, especially in those final rounds, you gave us some very tough matches! TNT was a very competitive venue, so good job all teams who participated. I am still in a total loss for words to describe how our robot killed its arm in both the FL regional and at TNT. It just proves that when I say TNT was intense, no one can argue.

I think vic burg asked if we plan to win at TNT next year (for the 3rd year in a row). Our only answer is that we would love to, and will try our hardest, but there are a lot of great teams out there we will have to compete against first. Basicly, there is no telling.

Lastly, thanks to Barry Bohnsack for not jinxing us... :D (barry knows what I mean!)

It was a great competition, and 744 can't wait till the new game is announced so we can start the season all over again!

The event was AMAZING.

Thanks to Brian Camp for pulling it all together once again.

Thanks to Wendy Austin for being the best fun time coordinator ever.

Thanks to my best friend, Libby Kamen for making the trip, and to Arefin Bari for helping her further her MC "education".

I'm sure I'm missing TONS of people who made this event happen.

I had a great time, seeing people I haven't seen since Florida Regional defiantly made it worth it.

Oh, and I have 870 pictures to go through, I'll upload some to CD-Media, and link to the rest hopefully by the end of the week.

Here is too another great TNT next year, October 23-24 2009 complete with a 4 match finals!

(Before match 3, I turned to Barry, and suggested it would be extreamly funny if this match ended in a tie. When we looked at the real time scoring, we were really excited but we still had to wait for penalties to be called [I don't remember if there were any for that match or not.] Once the score was announced we flipped, and Victoria informed us of her guess. It was totally awesome)

one thing i dident understand is how small it was in there
the seats roll back right

and there was 26 teams right and 8 teams got to pick to other teams so 8 times three equals 24 so only two teams dident get picked right

I think there was 28.

1 team had to withdraw from the competition due to a mechanical failure, and 1 team had to get students home early. Only two teams weren't picked, which I thought was pretty cool (just not for those teams.)

I think we should make it a small mission to get more out-of-state teams.
Agreed! TNT was an awesome off-season, and was well worth the trip for us
I STILL can't believe that The Cheesy Poofs came!!!! Did your flight back home go well? We're still on the way home. I'm actually writing this post on the free wi-fi at the phoenix airport.

well even though they got fried, it was kinda interesting how the other robot on thier alliance just turned around and started pushing them back into the wall while they were trying to go forward

it was 1875 right

I'm finally back in New Jersey after a whirlwind weekend, but I just wanted to thank everyone that made TNT possible, and thank you all for showing an out-of-stater a good time. I'm glad nobody threw anything at me when I took the microphone, I had a lot of fun MCing. :) (On that note if anyone wants to give me -constructive- feedback, feel free to pm me)

It would take such a long post to list everyone, but basically, if i spoke to you, saw you, or was in the same building as you this weekend- thank you.

Tempest in Tampa rocked! We'll see where I am in college next year, but I hope I can take a trip down again for '09. Who knows?

I got home awhile ago, but the rest of the team won't be getting in for a few hours.

254 had a blast at the event. Our robot broke before the matches even started, but we had a lot of fun anyways. It was good seeing some old friends, and meeting new teams. Unfortunately we had to leave after the second finals match to go to the Sharks-Lightning game. It sounded like things really got interesting after that.

I also took like 600-700 pictures or so. Should be some good ones of robots/people

TNT 2008 was definitely by far one of my favorite events that I have attended so far. I am looking forward to next year. Thanks to Brian camp and the organizing committee for making TNT a very successful event in Florida. Also, thank you for giving me the opportunity to mc the event. I had a blast.

On behalf of team 1592 we would love to thank everyone who made it possible for TNT to happen. It was a great practice for our new drivers and a great practice for our team seeing as our engineers weren't there to help us with the repairs of robot, which we had to fix several times. We had a blast and can't wait until next year.
Congratulations to all teams. Everyone did great.

Oh wow! That is insane!
Well, I hope you guys get home safe, anyways!
And yes, I completely forgot that Libby is out of state! lol
So yes Libby, thank you, too for coming all the way down here to help us out! And thank you to BOTH of our AMAZING and AWESOME MC's. To George, too! :D I LOVE the way you say "Theeee Piink Team"! lol
In fact, I don't think I thanked anybody! Even AS I was leaving - thank you the most to Brian, Wendy, and FSU. But of course, to anyone and everyone who was there! Even if you only stopped in for a few minutes! :D
It was a BLAST!

TNT was a lot of fun this year. Every one of SPAM's matches was an adventure.

The tournament crew did a good job catching up on the time lost at the beginning of the day. By the end of qualifying, they were back on schedule.

I wish we could have stayed to see the last match, but we had to leave at 5:30.

Thanks to everyone involved for putting on a great off-season tournament.

I am so glad I was able to attend this event. I have two tests tomorrow, and my car was in the shop for a routine tune-up, I was not expecting to make it. I decided "what the hay" and got a friend to drop me off to a spot so I could carpool there, and studied flashcards the entire way.

I was unprepared for the competition, I forgot my umbrella hat, and trackball tie. I'm amazed anyone recognized me at all ;). Even more shocking, two people in this thread used the actual spelling of my last name, whoa.

Thanks to everyone that made this event possible, I was happy to fill a role that is different for me at FRC events, reffing. I stared at a line, and pushed a button (lap counting) the majority of the event. It became apparent that I was so focused on keeping the score correct, that I had no idea what was going on during the actual match. I looked up during one match, and went "Why are all of the other alliance's robots dead?" I didn't even know the finals match 3 was a tie, or even within 10 points until Michelle and I looked up after the end buzzer sounded.

Because of this experience, I have a new found respect for referees at the FRC events, and want to extend a thank you to all of them out there. When a major match ends in a tie, thoughts run through your head if you are completely sure you saw every score and penalty.

Libby and Bilfred-Thank you two for coming, hanging out with friends like you that I rarely get to see is one of the major reasons I come to events.

Other refs and field reset crew- you all rock

Scoring table- You also rock.

Eric G- THANK YOU for driving me there and bringing me back.

Lauren- I tried my best :p

T 'N T is quickly becoming an elite off season event, and I forsee it growing and growing. 28 teams is tremendous, and every last match was hard faught. Thanks to Brian, Paul, Team 79 and all of the volunteers for hosting a great event.

The Lock In on Friday night is a huge blast, even if people do get a bit grumpy ( RELAX ITS A LOCKIN! ) But seriously it is one thing that really sets this event apart I had a lot of fun doing it. Thanks to Wendy Austin the "Fun Time Coordinator", Sarah P and Ryan L for getting the 5th gear stuff up, Team 1902 and the rest of the volunteers who helped put the awesomeness together ( I thank them because I truely had no involvement other than playing music and schtuff )

Congrats to the winning alliance, you guys were amazing, I had you picked to win the whole shabang from the get go, you all were tremendous through out the day.

I hope I get to come out next year and be involved again, it was fun, I really enjoyed it.

WOW its taken me several days to recover....but what a great event!!!

Big thanks to Brian Camp and all of the Krunch Parents (and Kids) who put in so much effort to make sure everything got done and there was plenty of food all night long. I know how many months of planning it took and we really appreciate it. For those not there....it wasn't just the FRC event. There were Lego workshops, FTC workshops and a full Vex event as well. At one point we estimated that there was over 2000 people in the dome.

Thanks to USF for the use of the dome and all the great staffers who helped out.

Thanks to Sarah Plemmons and Ryan Leitch and Lockheed Martin for providing the 5th Gear Simulation. I thought we were going to have to drag the kids away from it at one point.

Thanks also to all the volunteers who put in their time, most without much sleep, and to those who came in from places afar.

Thanks to all the teams and the team PARENTS AND MENTORS who slept on air matteresses so their kids could compete and play.

Thanks to all the students who made it so much fun. You participated in all my silly games and I didnt have to yell at anyone.....and we only had one injury.

Thanks to the new LYMAN HIGH B.A.D. team who took it on faith that they would have a good time and be able to keep up because I told them they would. (and they ended up 7th seed!!!)

Thanks to Team 2556 Radioactive Roaches for coming in from the Panhandle...also on faith......and ended up doing great as well.

Thanks to Oscar and Cheesy Poofs for coming such a long distance to play. It was great seeing you.

Thanks to all of BACON for helping to run the nighttime events. Most of you never slept and were still dancing at 6pm Saturday night. (although most fell asleep the minute we started driving) I'm proud to say that even my middle schoolers got to drive and even capped!!!

TNT is I think.....the most fun event we go to. The competition is great, the teams and people who come are so much fun to hang out with, the amount of activity going on...you need all 36 hours awake to do it all!!! I highly recommend it to any team looking for an off season event to attend.

If next year you could not yell "I just lost the game" into the mic every hour. It was kinda annoying. Other than that I loved the whole event. It was my first big event. Mission Mayem was my first event and it was fun but nothing compared to the excitement of Tempest. I loved eveything about that trip.

I'm really excited, heh maybe this year I'll get more sleep than I did last year. The hardest part is knowing when to wake up, the sun don't rise in a dome.

I know what you mean, my first TNT (2008; yes I am a rookie) I got 4 hours of sleep and that was on the bus ride back because I had no energy left.:D
