View Full Version : What's Your Favorite Autonomous (or Hyrbid) Ever?

From all past seasons, what robot has had the best autonomous strategy or most effective play? What team(s) consistently have highly ranked autonomous modes?

I'll start off:
Team 11 (gotta add it in there) MORT in 2006- Around the end of the season and in Newton we were going 10/10 in our autonomous. Unfortunately we aren't this consistent every year.

Team 25- Raider Robotix is consistently the best in autonomous in NJ and one of the best in Atlanta. They never cease to amaze me.

Team 71- The BEAST was having some issues during hybrid this year in Atlanta but was still one of the dominant hybrid scorers this year. I haven't seen them any other years so add onto their history if you wish.

Team 103- I haven't seen many of the Cybersonics' matches in previous years but their hybrid in Trenton was amazingly quick and agile.

Team 375- Robotic Plague had an intense autonomous in 2007, one of the first teams to successfully cap their keepers in autonomous that season.

Team 1114- Simbotics is another team that consistently has an amazing autonomous. From that glorious hybrid this year to their awesome spider leg capper in 07.

add on!

I started up in FIRST last year ('07), and Foley Freeze's (frc910) auto still amazes me :ahh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecZ4ghaYwTk

Granted it was an off-season event, but still the most amazing thing I've seen so far. I also enjoyed the 6 keeper auto at IRI that year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U02DOVK0mFQ

Consistency from year to year is a little tougher to gauge, since The Big Goal In Autonomous Mode isn't necessarily the one that teams choose to do. (2005 comes to mind.)

That said, some favorites come to mind:

25 in 2006: These guys had it nailed. When folks at New Jersey started aiming their autonomous at them, they implemented a delay to throw them off again. It's definitely a contributing factor in their undefeated streak stretching from New Jersey through Vegas and all the way to Saturday in Atlanta.

111 in 2003: StangPS was ahead of its time. Chart out your waypoints, download to the robot, run. In a game where autonomous execution was a huge advantage, you couldn't beat it.

254/968 in 2006: It was a simple autonomous--drive forward and shoot. They couldn't pan, due to the design of the robot, but its ability to abort the run based on sensor feedback (such as, say, due to a hit) made it more powerful than similar teams' designs.

1902/1369 in 2007: The keeper wasn't as big as some years' autonomous goals, but 1902 (and, to a lesser extent, its twin 1369) were able to execute beyond compare, all the way to Einstein in the former's case.

1114 in 2008: To steal a label from another Canadian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bret_Hart), the Simbots of this past season were The Excellence of Execution. I don't think there was anyone more effective at both lines and balls.

1519 in 2008: Reports of Speed Racer getting two laps in autonomous at some off-season events should send chills down the line of everyone.

910 in 2007: Two keepers in a match where most matches were lucky to even see one attempted. I don't know if it would've stuck as well in the regular season, where autonomous countermeasures are more likely to develop, but the feat is undeniable.

237 - 2005 - They could do the impossible... Cap the vision tetra (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=237+robot+2005&hl=en&emb=0&aq=f#):yikes:
190 - 2004 - Nobody stops Gompei! (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3809323685249382641&ei=K_XWSKHzI5KKqQOypLDHAg&hl=en)
980 - 2003 - I remember that bot from 2003 Cal-Games. The box-basher-arm thingy was awesome. :D

Found some vids of 980 too. (http://team980.com/Team980_2003.html)

I forgot that it was 910 last year attempting to get 2 in auto (I know they succeeded at least once, but I can't remember if it was at Kettering.) This year 910 at kettering was getting 6 lines and 2 balls. I'd be curious to see just how many lines someone could make speed racer (1519's speed bot) to get in auto... It was capable of doing a lap in 6 seconds, which means it could theoretically make about 10 lines... be neat to see it happen.

Oh yeah... 190's 2004 auto was pretty amazing... though i'm pretty sure we hung on top of them at 2004's wonderland invitational...

I like this version better because it shows the insanity after it happened (match to win the finals, last match of the year).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYogy0ES9bs&NR=1

Also, if we get a chance to incorporate the obstacle avoidance sensors and code that we already have on our 2008 bot, then at WMRI next month we'll crank up the auton driving speed (currently at 58%) to 100% and let it fly. That could get us 8-9 lines and 2 balls. Also our auto-ball capture would be fun after the second ball knock but we'd have to be lucky to have time to launch it.

Aren't robots just the coolest toys ever!

Yeah, buddy. It figures you two guys would beat me to this pick. There are others that were as visually jaw dropping, but StangPS flat out revolutionized automode in FIRST.

To me it has to go to 190 in 2004. The way they did it time and time again was amazing. There wasn't any green lights back then to guide you.

The same year 980 also had the ablity to pick up the big ball and then knock off the little ball was a close second.

I really liked the autonomous mode from 70,494, and 537 at Buckeye in 2007 during the finals. 537's robot was really similar to the martians. All three arms would lift up and rotate at the same time. It looked really cool.

Argh, I forgot about Pink's!

For the uninitiated: Pink would drive out to the autoloaders on the far side of the field, stick their arm out enough, and grab a tetra. They would then spin around, rotate their arm, stick it out again, and grab a second tetra (which would now be sitting on the autoloader). When many teams would have to take time in teleop to get to the human loading zones (or even grab just one tetra from the autoloader), having two tetras in your possession at the opening bell can make a lot of difference!

1. 469 (2006)-Like a lot of teams the Las Guerillas could consistantly score 10 balls in autonomous. Unlike all other teams they scored 10 balls in 1 second. It was one of the coolest things ever.

2. 1114 (2008)-Speed, precision, and consistancy, you can't ask for much more from an auto mode. When they finally got 7 lines and 2 balls at IRI i was stunned

3. 703 (2006)-They did something no other team did, climb the ramp and shoot 10 balls into the goal. It was one of the coolest things to see.

4. 910 (2008)-Specifically during the post season. I loved watching them score 2 keepers at The Advanced Robotics COmpetition, unfortunately i was coaching against them.

5. 233 (2005)-Not only did they knock off a hanging tetra and score another, they loaded up two tetras and were ready to go as soon as the match started. You can't get much better than that.

Of course, my favorite hybrid is my Ford Escape http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/galleries/2008/autos/0804/gallery.hybrid_buys/images/ford_escape_hybrid_logo.jpg... (http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/escapehybrid/?referrer=www%2Eford%2Ecom&glbcmp=ford|vehicles):D

But seriously, my favority hybrid was probably the one (who's number I can't remember... I think it starts with 17xx 1731... thanks for the reminder sparx!) that had four large spotlights used as the remote.

...actually, I'm not sure if it's the robot's performance I liked so much, or if it was how the person who was the robo coach would just go nuts with em and have an impromptu dance party now n then... :]

910 in 2007 was simply outstanding. 2 keepers was something that only they did and it showed true determination and will of their programmers to get it working.

Other enjoyable hybrids: 111 in 2006. That shooter was untouchable. 71 in 2001 was incredible (though it wasn't autonomous, it could have been). 1114 and 1024 were both crazy this year and one of my favorite autnomous periods was the 6 keeper hybrid at IRI in 2007. (330, 2056, 111, 1114, 968, and 910.)

Thanks for the kudos on our Speed Racer. For those that might not have seen the videos yet, our best teleop round (13 teleop laps) also included 7 lines in auto -- just missed the 8th line due to a collision with one of our alliance partners. 1075 in 2003 had a wicked fast auto too.. our design was able to turn at full speed (it was like a tricycle but the front was a steerable belt)... We climbed the ramp and expanded to knock down the vast majority of the wall very quickly. I can remember there was one robot at the Canadian Regional in 2003 that shot an arm up and swung it around to hit the wall, and we got our whole robot to the wall before their arm could get there.

Rather that site 1 specific team, I really liked Triple Plays variety. It had from the simple knock down a tetra to autos like ours that knocked 1, and then stacked, to the difficult task of trying to cap the vision Tetras.

I know it isn't everyone's favorite, but that is still my favorite Automode season, and favorite game for variety of machines.

I can still feel the anticipation of watching 66 come so close to capping almost every auto mode.

While the 2003 game lacked in many areas, it didn't lack in auto mode. To see robots trying to beat each other up the ramp was always thrilling and it was simple enough for many teams to attempt it. 111 and their StangPS simply dominated that year. 980 was by far the most creative with their unpowered telescoping arm.

I thought 2008 was similar to 2003 in that many robots could do something in hybrid mode, which makes it fun to watch. But 2004-2007 seemed to be not as thrilling auto modes unless you were at a competition with some great programming teams. Most inexperienced teams had very basic or non-existant auto modes. And the green light/camera idea only seemed to get mastered and/or utilized by a handful of teams at each competition.
