View Full Version : Where Are You Volunteering?
Since FIRST events are ran mostly by volunteers, and a lot of users on here do so. I thought it might interesting to see what FIRST events people are planning on volunteering at.

I'll be volunteering at a few FLL events this winter, and I hope to (in future years, probably) volunteer at championship, kickoff, and/or a regional or two.

I just volunteered last saturday at the TDSB East FLL Tournament. I'm heading to the VEX competetion being held in St. Catherines this coming Saturday :) . Most of my time volunteering has been spent on FLL and a little bit of FTC and VEX. Mainly local FIRST related events.
Since the time i have joined FIRST in 2007, i've accumulated 40+ volunteering hours. This is not alot in comparison to many other people i know who've probably spent 100-150+ hours of volunteering in FIRST. I couldn't imagine FIRST without volunteers.
Planning to volunteer in L.A. It's the second year in a row that L.A. and my spring break coincide.

Reffing for my 3rd year and helping to coordinate volunteers at the NJ State FLL Tournament at Mt. Olive High School for the first time. December 13th should be fun. :)
Not sure as of right now, but maybe volunteering at the NJ FTC Tournament (if I'm not coaching the FTC teams).

Definitely an enlightening experience. I've mentored FLL and FTC teams and it is a big difference there though, haha.

All FLL tournaments held at Carmen Ainsworth (Genesee county) as a technical judge.
Most likely Kettering District event though I may end up working for Kettering instead.
Possibly Championship.
St. Louis-first year out of high school, first time :) Although I am a bit worried about the class I'm going to miss...

This is my first year volunteering at FRC competition events. (I've done FTC and FLL before.)
I registered on VIMS, but haven't gotten a confirmation of my position yet, so as of now I'm just assuming I'll be volunteering at both the Boston and the Connecticut Regional this year.
Boston because I'm right here for college, Connecticut because it's my home regional (20 minutes from my house) and it coincides with my spring break. It will definitely be cool to watch all those teams I once played with from the other end of things.

I'm going to volunteer for Robot Inspector for the Boilermaker Regional.
If we get to go to the Championship, I will volunteer for Robot Inspector there too.
I volunteered @ NJ, NYC, and Philly for Website Judge.
Would physically volunteer at Philly regional but it runs during Drexel finals.
Maybe next year.

My list of volunteering for this upcoming FRC season, & the remainder of this year (for both FLL & FTC) is pretty large as always.
Let's just say, wherever & whenever I am needed, I'll be there. :)
So far for 2009 I'm signed up for the CT Regional.
I'm all official in VIMS for that already.
Horray for field set-up on Wednesday!
I may volunteer in some way or another in NYC '09 as well since my team is also attending that event, but I'm not certain yet.
Also, if I'm in Atlanta, I'll be joining the volunteer crew there as well.
I've been volunteering at various (and numerous) FIRST events since 2001, & I'm not going to be stopping any time soon.

I've signed up for Buckeye and Championships. This year I'm going to plan early to go down there, even if my team isn't going. I want to go down there sometime before I die.

Peachtree - Lead Robot Inspector
Championship - Lead Robot Inspector
I'm in VIMS for Boston & CT FRC events. Unfortunately the CT FTC event conflicts with the Boston FRC event. :-(
Web Judging for Wisco and Minnesota. Inspecting on Thursday at Minnesota.
I'm a judge coordinator at the Seattle Regional FLL Qualifying Event my team is organizing this weekend and I'm pretty sure I'll be a robot inspector at our FTC tournament on the 14th.
I spend all of my time during the FRC volunteering with my team, though I guess most people don't really consider that to be volunteering at all.

1676 has been asked to go and help set up NJ on Wednesday, so I should be going down with them. I'm gonna look into volunteering at NYC, too.
FLL regional this weekend here in Indy. :] (clearly i thought that smilie would be appropriate) lol
As for FRC, I'm having a hard time deciding where I'm going and if they'll allow me to volunteer 2 out of 3 days seeing Thursdays are usually my fly in days. I'll be at other events with a team like Boilermaker Regional.
I'm currently picking between LA Regional and Florida as a volunteering destination.

I'll hopefully be volunteering at the Cass Tech MI district event, seeing as it's over my spring break and 217 will be there... :)

As of right now, I will be co-MCing the Lansing District with Dave Verbrugge, should be fun!
Oh yeah, and inspecting robots at all competitions I attend. What, I inspect how pretty they all are!!!
Definite: Queing @ FLR in week 2
Queing @ Championship
Tentative:Queing @ DC in week 1
Queing @ Florida in week 3
Queing @either Phili, Chesepeake or Waterloo depending on what my team does in week 4.
Queing @ GTR in week 5
Queing @ Michigan Championship in week 6
it all depends on my vacation scheduling (I work in a union so vacation is given out based on seniority and I am the lowest trucker by decades in my area)
My off season schedule won't be known until the off season is actually scheduled. Rah Cha Cha Ruckus is a definite and so is IRI. Queing @ both
Various FTC/FLL events here in NJ and the NYC area- you name it, I'm probably there. With a few exceptions, of course.
My FRC season:
Week 1: NJ Regional w/team 1923 (Definite)
Week 2: Volunteering at Boston (Definite)
Week 3: Senior trip to Disney. Sorry, no FIRST this weekend. (Definite)
Week 4: Philly? (1923 is on the waitlist, so I may not be volunteering)
Week 5: Volunteering at Long Island?
Week 6: I'd like to volunteer at the Michigan event. Just to see what it's like.
Championship: Competing with 1923.

My current schedule (subject to change, but probably not):
Northern Maine FLL Championship
Manchester, NH Kickoff - Fri & Sat
BAE Granite State Regional
This is not alot in comparison to many other people i know who've probably spent 100-150+ hours of volunteering in FIRST. I couldn't imagine FIRST without volunteers.

Our team is hosting an FLL regional in our gym, and I'm a ref. We volunteered at the practice match this year and last year. I love working with FLL, it's great to see kids so young developing their interests.
This could be my least amount of events volunteering to date :-( but its ok because its the best regional:
FINGER LAKES REGIONAL FTW!!!!!!!!!!! :ahh:
How's this for a list:
12/6/08 - Running the CircuitRunner FLL Qualifier (Georgia FLL)
12/13/08 - Head Ref at the Palmer MS FLL Qualifier
1/10/09 - Running the NW Georgia FLL Super Regional
1/31/09 - Assisting our Operational Partner at the Georgia FLL State Tournament
2/14/09 - Judge Advisor for the Tennessee FTC Tournament
2/21/09 - Running the Georgia FTC Tournament
3/12-14/09 - Head Scorekeeper for the Peachtree FRC Regional
4/15-18/09 - Field Manager at the FTC Championships
Oh, and mentoring 2-3 FTC and 2-3 FRC teams. Yes, I am a FIRST-a-Holic.

You should be getting an e-mail sometime soon from the volunteer coordinator for those events. I know they are first recruiting what FIRST considers to be "key volunteer" positions (lead inspectors, referees, scoring system operators, etc.), and then they work on sorting out who does what's left...
I'm volunteering as Website Judge Coordinator for DC. The least I could do after volunteering my mom to be Volunteer Coordinator. http://www.caazone.com/boards/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I'm volunteering for the FRC Hawai'i Regional, as well as volunteering with the Hawai'i Regional Planning Committee. So if I can get dragged in, I probably will for any events on O'ahu including the Pan Pacific VEX Competition this weekend. I might do a mainland event, however that is still up in the air.:)

Sorry for reviving this dead-ish thread. But, I’m curious:
1. Where you are all volunteering?
2. What the 1st week volunteers have to say about volunteering (scorers, refs, judges, inspectors, field reset etc.)
As for me, I’ll be at the Kettering and Troy district events in Michigan.

This will be my 6th year volunteering at NASA/VCU Reg. And I have volunteered at Championship the last 4 years. And I love it! My son graduated in 06 and I still keep coming back. He is in Iraq right now in the Marines and it makes me feel a little closer to him.
One question pleae. Does anyone know how I can get the word out that I make red white and blue FIRST logo earrings, pins, and hair barretts? I am trying to raise money to pay my way to Atlanta this year. I'm don't think I will be able to afford the trip this year. :(
Go Sparky384! Go FIRST!

I will volunteer at the Las Vegas regional. Field Reset.

Volunteered at Buckeye Regional. This is my first year (FUN!) of volunteering, it was really fun and tiring. I was originally crowd control, but was reassigned to field reset, which I loved.
One thing for field resetters to watch out for are teams pulling balls from the bins before they're full, and teams pulling balls from the wrong bins, either from other alliance members or the opposite alliance. We've had countless matches hold because of that, along with technical difficulties (lol @ USB soundcards).
Planning to volunteer in L.A. It's the second year in a row that L.A. and my spring break coincide.
To update, I'm field setup/teardown and field reset.

Update:
Tech Judged all 3 FLL tournaments in Flint.
Kettering Student Ambassador FIRST Team Leader at Traverse City
Photographer at Kettering District (397\27 competing)
Week Off (That pesky thing called school that Ive been neglecting for the last 7 weeks, also seeing parents at a NON robotics related event called dinner)
Lansing (397/27 competing)
Troy (397 competing) Other week off unless I can get one of my final exams moved,if I can I will probably be working with 397 (for once)
Ypsi - (Off from school yay!) Depending on work schedule and or 397 qualifying.
Championship - Working scholarship row, come look for me at Kettering's booth. You know you dont wanna talk to those silly recruiters, talk to real students!
Off season
Kettering Kickoff - Photographer or Ambassador, still up in the air, also 397 more than likely competing.
You know, one of these years I am going to keep a tally of how many hours I put into first, just so I can monetarily describe my obsession. :) By the way, if you see me at any event (look for the guy in the 397 shirt with a camera and it is probably me, that or look for Kettering shirts also with a camera, still me) say hi, I love meeting new people, just dont be in a hurry, I can usually be quite talkative. (As you can tell by this post, but it wouldnt be me without commentary)

Staff position at OKC.
Robot inspector at San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Atlanta.
We are still recruiting for many positions for the Week 4 Chesapeake Regional. I was able to talk to lots of people during my 3 days in the pits in DC, many of whom are already committed to Week 4 at VCU or Philly, but some are able to help us out. Many FIRST alums signing up. We are looking forward to seeing the 55 teams (I think for about 75% of them, Chesapeake will be their 2nd event) from 9 states + DC + the UK.
PM me with your email and I will send you the specifics about openings, and logistics for the US Naval Academy.

Thanks. I wish I could announce it at the event, but FIRST doesn't allow selling anything at an event. Also VCU would have to get a percentage.

I strongly disagree, and would start telling you why, but it would turn into a rant and I don't think I want to get into that right now.
