Sorry if i am beating a dead horse, but is anyone else having trouble installing inventor on vista?
I used the download tool but when its done downloading and i click to install then it just says will not run on on your current OS. then when i go in to change the cabatability mode on the Install inventor program it doesnt give me the option
Anyone?
we have an educational copy of solidworks and a FIRST copy of inventor from firstbase and neither install on a 64bit laptop running vista.
Maybe there is a workaround with the 32bit version?

Based on my experience, a program that specifically checks for 32 vs 64 bit at install, can not be "tricked" using the Compatability settings, as neither Vista or XP gives you a compatability option to mimic a 32 bit version of the OS.

Not sure if it works or not at this point, but on your FIRSTbase download screen, you should see a link as shown within the bold red box below.

I am still in the process of downloading the MASSIVE file (please note that the file is 8,874 mb, about a six hour download for DSL users!
I hope that this is beneficial to you, and I will post again if the download doesn't work!
Firefox users can CLICK HERE for the file download! (http://studentsdownload.autodesk.com/cdcoll/downloads/sd/2009/inventor/English/StudentAIP_ACADM_32_64.zip) :)

Just as an update to my earlier post...the link DOES in fact work on the lower half of the FIRSTbase page, but I will warn that it is an 8.7 gb compressed ZIP download, and it takes my system over an hour and a half to extract the whopping 14.5 GIGABYTE FILE! The software is VERY intensive and demanding (they recommend 6gb ram), but if you are relying on FIRSTbase as your only source for Inventor, then this is your only option! But as I said, the download and install is nearly a twelve hour project on 64bit systems, but it works!
Just as a side note...I am running 1.5mb/sec DSL, an Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.20 Ghz, and 4 gb ram on Vista Premium 64bit edition..
But sorry for the delay on my post, and GOOD LUCK!
i was able to get a copy from students.autodesk.com
It runs amazingly smooth.. no glitches/ random crashes so far

I started a thread a few days ago in the Inventor sub-forum. Since somebody cross-linked this thread into mine, I figured I'd return the favor. Click here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71667) for the other thread.
I'm on a cable modem and I've had a HECK of a time keeping my cable modem healthy during this MASSIVE download.
During the day, I get around 200 KB/sec, but at night it grows to 1 MB/sec. Problem is, my cable modem would die. I'd monitor my network traffic and when it fell to zero, I'd power-cycle my cable modem and it'd start back up.
If it stayed at zero for too long, it'd cancel the download, so I'd have to keep an eye on it. After 3 failed attempts (with 2 of them reaching over 75% complete), it finally successfully completed last night!
Now I'm extracting it. ... and after 95% I got a "path too long" error for one of the files ... I had to skip it.
It's good to hear that some of you have had smooth installations after what has been (for me at least) a very time consuming download/extraction process.

Thanks you guys are life savers , i've spent hours trolling Autodesk and Firstbase and had given up and installed an old copy of 2007. Downloading now thanks a million.

I think this is my 4th time downloading it, every time i do it shows that the ziped file is only about 5.8Gb file, and when i try to unzip it, It says That the file is empty, and that i have to copy a file to that zipped file.
 Are you guys just using the unzipper that comes with vista or another program?

Good Luck!
I'm still having a few issues and am not 100% up and running.
I need to get the team account password to finish the licensing process (I tried to login to Autodesk with my FIRSTbase username and it balked)
Then I don't know where to extract my tutorial files. ... and I never was asked to "install" them, just extract the files. And I can't find a FAQ about where to extract them ...
Then, after manually selecting the project path to my downloaded directory, I didn't like how it put %20's instead of spaces, so I changed them ... and ever since, it won't get past the splash screen. Even after changing them back.
sigh ... I'll probably remove everything (except the HUGE downloaded file) and re-install.

for 64bit you have to create a new login specific to Autodesk.com . Firstbase logins do not work.
I finally got 64 bit Vista up and running ,
The download of the program (8.7GB) takes at least 4 hours
the extraction process (with default vista extraction tool) takes a couple hours
Installation takes almost an hour
32 Bit was much easier and hopefully Autodesk improves the process for 64bit Vista users

When I download it, it shows up as the full 8.7 or so GB, but when I try to unzip it (I've used 7zip, winrar, default vista unzipper), it says that it's corrupted. I've downloaded it twice, too.

Yeah when ever i try to unzip it it says that it is just a backup, and i cant unzip it so idk? try autocad or something.

I used the default windows vista unzipper and winzip with success.
Are you downloading the file over a wifi connection ?

No, I'm using a wired connection. I originally downloaded the 32 bit version, and it worked fine except it said that it could not be installed on the 64 bit operating system.

Alright, so lets talk about the problems we have AFTER downloading.
My mentor and I had the exact same problem; we're both running Vista 64-bit machines. We got the file okay, had Inventor up and running and then one day it just decided not to work.
My computer was having trouble shutting down and when I started it back up it did nothing for about 20 minutes.
I restarted it and when I did a window that I had never seen before popped up telling me that my computer could not start and that it was running through repairs to fix the problem.
After that everything worked fine until I opened Inventor and while loading I got a message that said "This program has stopped working, Windows is searching for a solution."
And that was the end of that.
So far I've repaired, reinstalled, uninstalled, and am now in the process of reinstalling from square one. Anyone have any idea what is going on?!?

Yeah, that didn't work either
I hope in future years, Autodesk provides a blueray or multi-dvd set for the 64-bit Vista install.
It seems many of the problems are due to either downloading or unzipping.

Ive downloaded Inventor twice, now the reasons are different . the first time like others it was time consuming but i got it done. at the end of the download when the Instalation test the configuration it shows 1 warning messing that deals with the operating system. now i tried to fix it but gave up. Inventor work and i registered.
this is the problem, Four or so days after i get this message saying windows cant open Inventor and a whole bunch of stuff saying that windows cant find the file or whatever. I Found a site that said uninstall it and reinstall but make sure all your security is off and the UCA is off. i did this again ( total of 2 days in hour downloading Inventor) but it wouldn't open again not even once.
Sorry this is so long but heres a summery
I downloaded Inventor 64bit . 1 of 11 tests says (during Installation) "Warning: System test check data management"
It worked for 4-7 days then a message saying windows cant open it popped up many times
I uninstalled it
I reinstalled it
It didn't open up at all
i went 250g to 170 than to 197 then ( installed) to 137 then (uninstall) 209
I didn't seem to get all of my memory back(hard drive) after uninstalling the first time ,but the second time gave me back the 60-70gigs it used
I'm sad : (
That sounds rough, I'm sorry the Inventor 64 bit Vista has given you so much trouble.
I would email the Autodesk support group for firstbase , supportfirst@mail.autodesk.com
Hopefully they can offer some advice on your problem.

THX I definitely will. I hope it gets fixed, there's not much time left to build our robots.
I hope they put more thought into next year for us 64bit users.
