Motor Question?

I'm thinking about using rollers to pick up the balls, what motors do you think would be best? I was thinking of using the fisher price motors, but the gear box that it comes with slows them down alot. Thanks for the ideas.

The Fisher Price motors are great for this sort of application.
If possible, a custom gearbox could be constructed (or purchased) to get a different reduction with a higher speed.

If it is still legal (see Nate's question (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71209) posted elsewhere) then a modified Globe gearmotor might suit your needs. The modification involves disassembling the gearhead from the motor, removing all the gears, cutting the gearcase to a reduced length, then reassembling two of the three planetary gear stages in the shortened case and putting it back on the motor. The modified Globe then spins at a nice speed for harvesting. Search old threads here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42539&highlight=globe+modification) for details of the modification.

However, as Nate pointed out, the 2009 Game Manual might not allow this modification.

We have used the banebots transmissions with much success since 2006. In fact a banebots transmission with fisher price motor is how we ran our 2006 conveyor system. Just a word of caution, the banebots will destroy themselves under a cantilevered load.

In 2006, we used the FP motors and gearboxes to pick balls up. It wasn't the fastest one on the field, but it wasn't the slowest either.

The JVN Design Calculator (search in the white papers for it) is great for playing around with this stuff. Then, when a judge asks you why you chose a certain motor, you can answer with technical reasoning (speed numbers, torque numbers, etc) and not "Uhh...well...".

How are the fisherprice gear boxes modified? Any recommendations on how to modify them to get more speed? How do we attached a belt or pully to the fisher price box?

You can actually just cut out a section of the transmission, and then attach to a stage with less torque and more speed. It's rather easy to do.

If you are a rookie team and do not have old FP transmissions to play with (so that you can open one up and poke around without worrying about destroying anything important), I am *certain* that a team in your area will have one that they can give you. If you can't find one locally, 1551 will happily mail you one. :D

Speaking of FP motors and transmissions, did anyone notice that the pinion on the FP motor this year is 16 teeth instead if 19 teeth like the last 3 years. Anyone count the ratio on the new 2009 FP motor-trans? It is now likely running a transmission output of about 85% as fast as they used to with 15% more torque.
