I was wondering how to mount a chain sprocket or belt sprocket to the fisher price gearbox provided in the KOP?

Not easy to do, but first you have to press off the gear that came on it (be very careful, the magnets inside are fragile!) then you have a 1/8" diameter shaft you can use as you see fit. (the shaft is knurled for the gear press, but you can run he motor and press a small file against the shaft to get rid of the knurl). You can use 1/8" bore sprockets with setscrews.

I think you meant an attachment from the gearbox?

Without machining anything Try using the wheel driver found here its about 5 dollars.

You want the Power Wheels Replacement Wheel Driver 74460-2249, at the bottom of the page.

I was about to start a thread but thought this might be an ok place to ask first:
Is there a good place that you can buy a small gearbox for the Fisher-Price, maybe about 16:1. Thanks! :D

The inside profile of the output shaft forms an octogon. It actually took a bit of searching to find this on the forums...

Plenty of ways to attach to anything you want.

Is about the closest you'll get to 16:1 without machining. I don't know if anyone has ever successfully mated a FP to a banebots transmission. I'm sure it's possible if you have the right machining capabilities. Then again, if you can machine it then why not just make your own, right?

There are a number of postings about using a Banebots (http://www.banebots.com) 42 mm gearbox with the F-P motor. Banebots has stopped shipping the previous version and is supposedly going to introduce an improved model - but that has been delayed.

We used these last year for our lift and it worked very well. You have to remove the pinion from the F-P motor and press on the pinion that is compatible with the banebots gearbox. The pinion used to come on the motor that came with the gearbox (RS-550 type), but you can also purchase them separately. The F-P motor has the same mounting threaded holes and shaft size as the RS545-550 motor. I just checked the site and it looks like they are about ready to make what they call the P60 available which will do this job. Comes in 4:1, 16:1, 64:1 and 256:1

Good luck.

Here's the preliminary link to the new BaneBots trannies:

They've a much cheaper option than the AM planetary to stacker box combo suggested above, But they're not as rugged. With only a 16:1 ratio, however, you shouldn't have any problems.

AS previously mentioned... the new Banebot transmission selection includes a 16:1 No machining required... and they are very easy to mount... They don't mention FP but the form factor for the FP is the "550" form factor that they discuss in the write up. The FP should interface with no problems...

I echo 2046... we used them last year with no problem at all...well at least no problem caused by the transmissions....

The new ones look even better

We did this last year with mixed results. We basically made an keyed aluminum cylinder that fit inside of the octagon. We then used a hose clamp to keep the plastic teeth tight around the aluminum cylinder.

Here is our old CAD from last year, http://2008.discobots.org/node/33
If you want to see pictures, our gallery has many different pictures.

I would not suggest this approach for a drive system unless you have a more reliable way of connecting to the plastic octagon. A hose clamp eventually gets lose and then your shaft will be free-spinning.

BaneBots P60's are now available and include free items (mounting kit, RS-545 motor, grease) with each purchase, for a limited time. :yikes: See their website for further details:

Mating a FP to a banebots gearbox doesn't *really* require machining.

First, you must break/pull off the stock FP pinion and press on the appropriate banebots one. In some cases, you must then shorten the FP output shaft.

From this point, it will mount stock to a banebots gearbox, but I would recommend a little bit of "machining" to improve them.

The motors themselves in the older gearboxes were mounted with terrible quality screws (and philips heads at that), I'd recommend replacing them with some good socket heads. In my experiences, the counterbore usually doesn't fit socket heads, so the hole must be drilled larger.

I haven't seen the inside of the new gearboxes, but they outside clearly shows the same terrible quality screws that I've grown to loathe. It's really interesting to me that they made such substantial changes to the quality, but didn't do something as simple as using decent fasteners.

EDIT: on second reading, they say socketheads are used for mounting the motor. But the screws holding the gearbox together are still not decent hex based ones.

Do you guys know if it will work for a conveyor belt?

MrForbes

It might, but it depends on the conveyor belt design...they are not all the same! One important thing when using the FP motor is to make sure the thing it is driving cannot get jammed, which could cause the motor to stall and overheat (burn up) very quickly.

If a cordless drill can run your conveyor easily, then an FP motor should be able to, if geared properly.

I modified one for our belt and it is fast and robust... you do need to make sure that it is running in the right direction so that the 1/4 bolt shaft tightens as it turns but this is an easy mod and works well for a one direction belt drive with an output shaft on both sides of the case...
