View Full Version : 12 to 1 Bane Bots Planetary Transmission
Is the "12 to 1 Bane Bots Planetary Transmission" still available or in other words, is it still allowed for this years competition. I would appreciate any help:ahh:
The Banebots P80 (CIM) is available in 12:1, if that's what you're looking for. As a general rule of thumb, if it isn't restricted and it is available COTS, it is legal. (And the Manual has the entire list of restrictions.)

There are two of these. The ones from the 2007 KOP and the new model. Both are legal COTs. Make sure if you are using cad files from the 2007 KOP you get the right ones from banebots:

Banebots now normally sells their new model:

Both are legal and almost the same aside from a few differences. The CIMs mount differently and the output shaft on the old one is longer.

I don't believe that the 2007 Gear Box are legal this year. The part is no longer manufacturer and not available in a quantity that would be able to serve FRC teams. "Finding a few boxes" and offering them on closeout probably doesn't qualify. If you find this be different (through Q&A) please post because it would be nice to be able to use them.
The re-designed P80's IMHO are first legal.

FIRST has issued a Q&A (http://forums.usfirst.org/showthread.php?t=11555) with their opinion on the matter. (I'm assuming that their answer presumes that the gearboxes in question meet the conditions for being covered under <R32>, namely COTS parts from an old robot, or used-to-be-COTS.)
I don't know if the GP-56012 (e.g. from the 2007 kit) is available as a COTS item; this one (http://www.robotshop.ca/On-sale/Banebots-56mm-Planetary-Gearbox.html), for example, doesn't specify the "-HC" anywhere, so it might be a COTS source for the GP-56012 to which the GDC referred. By contrast, BaneBots specify that the ones on closeout have hardened plates, and are therefore the GP-56012-HC versions.
There's a parallel discussion of similar issues happening here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=71126). It might be wise to wait until FIRST answers the question mentioned in that thread (from FRC57/Kevin Sevcik), before making a final decision on any parts that were at one time custom-ordered by FIRST for the KoP.

Don't buy the GP-56012 model if you're planning on putting any kind of load whatsoever on this tranny. The -HC models have hardened carrier plates that are pretty good at dealing with fluctuating loads. The non -HC models have unhardened carriers and the output shaft will wobble out the hole in the carrier plate extremely quickly. If you don't already have the 2007 trannies laying around, save yourself a headache and go with the P80's.
