*sigh* snow in the Northeast has caused another snow day resulting in a whole build day lost. Anybody else lose days due to snow/cold?

Yes we do. My school since it is a private school has a lot of snow days. We take people from all over New Jersey and some from New york, We have already had 5 snow days and 3 during the building process

I went with the first option because we have not lost any days due to weather, but here in MN I most certainly know what snow is. We work at a building across the street from the school so when school is out due to weather we can actually start early (or at least we could while I was on winter break to be a supervising mentor).

Hurricane season would be torture, at least in snow you can lock the doors and know the robot is safe.

For Northern Virginia we just had our first snow day today.
Snow? What is that?
You Southeners don't know how good you've got it. (Okay, maybe you do.;) ) You've never had the fun of shoveling 3-6" of "partly cloudy". Today we're around 8" so far, and the storm is expected to taper off around 1am tomorrow.
We're up to 3 days lost already, and we're starting to question if we should add a few more days to our calendar to compensate. (Of course, 811's build season is only 5 weeks long, because we have Semester Exams in the middle, and school policy forbids our opening until those are done.)
Our first day of the year. 12.5 inches of snow here.
We have lost the last 2 days because of snow in St. Louis. We have recently installed January 32 and 33 as official days in our calendar.

No snow here...but two weeks ago school was cancelled due to highwind advisory (up to 60mph winds). Fortunatly it didn't materialize.

Where did you measure that? I'm in Indy and just measured 8.5 inches.

Today was the first and it leaves me homesick for the workshop
We only meet three days each week. Can I pretend that all the rest are snow days?

Today is our 3rd lost day. :(
Back in the day we used to just break into school and break locks....admin didn't take too kindly to that...
Stupid snow.

2nd day for us. School activities were cancelled yesterday afternoon and there was no school today.
We're compensating by adding at least 1 more day to the schedule; too many more days and we won't have a day off in between now and ship date. :ahh:

For living in Minnesota, we have actually never had any days of school canceled (well, at least not during the build season. One or two in the last three years otherwise). This is due in part to our proximity to St. Paul.
Where is the "I live where the sun never shines but sometimes it's foggy" option? We had one terrible cold spell where it got down to -4C for a week, but no snow out of it. We've been meeting a lot so far, so I'm taking this weekend as a vacation and going south to Germany where I might find some of the elusive snow. :)

Our build was cancelled today due to inclement weather. Our build space is separate from any particular school, however, so we sometimes have builds for those who can attend, mainly with specific build work in mind, on snow days.

Surprisingly, we have been above 0C all of three days this build season. We only canceled one build session, but that was rough since we can only build Mon, Fri, Sat.

No snow days this year...yet. We don't build at our school so I don't even think a snow day is possible. We have had cancelled meetings because we are waiting for parts (like today) and don't have much else to do. I wish Fed Ex was faster UPS too.

Our team doesnt work at school, so when school is cancelled we can work all day. In December we had 14" one day, then the net day we got 6", and we got a few after that. Living in Milwaukee we get more snow than most places because we get the lake effect snow from lake Michigan.

2 days for me. 1 for the rest of the team (I am burried in worse than the rest of them)
Well yesterday and today the schools were closed. . we have almost 1/8in of ice on the road, and my car door was frozen shut this morning. First time we have ever missed 1 day let alone 2. Just hope it doesn't get too much colder our here . . I don't think I could take low teens.
( yes I do realize my cold stories are like telling Iraq vets about how awful it was when I got a splinter at the fair this last summer)

2 weeks ago we had a high of -5 with a windchill of -45.

We've lost one, but our school (Lafayette School Corporation) was the only one in the area to be open today, I'm pretty sure the robotics kids were the only happy ones.

We have a serious weather event here in north AR. Major ice storm and power outages since Monday. They are saying it could be up to 3 weeks before all the power is restored. The Baxter plant is shut down and we have no power at our build site either. We we're putting wheel modules together by candlelight last night! We are beside ourselves with what will happen with the robot but it is such a disaster for our entire area that it can't even matter right now.
1 day for snow. 2 for cold temperatures (-30*F and -20*F consecutively). It's back to about 15*F so I'm back down to a sweatshirt during the day. :D
Our 3 days off were during week 2. We've since made them up by working longer weekends and MLK day.

We will be keeping the people of Arkansas in our thoughts! If you need, just pack the bot and team up and head up north to Rochester. It just snows here. And snows and snows... but we have POWER!!!
First time this season, after school activities are cancelled tonight. But leadership, programming, and awards sub-teams are meeting off-site anyway. And it is the middle of mid-terms so many of the students can use a night off to study anyway.

Here in South Carolina, we barely know what snow is, but we did have one day where school was canceled for an ice/snow mixture less than an inch deep that didn't affect the roads, so we lost that day.
It's going to happen again next week too. Take a look at some computer models for what is going to come out of the gulf next Sunday. Some teams on the east coast could really loose some time.
So ... where's all this Global Warming we've been promised?
As I tell my students, how can you seriously believe the prognosticators when they say it will be 2 degrees warmer in a hundred years, when they can't even tell what next week (or sometimes tomorrow!) will be like?
We lost 3 days so far – 1 day due to a water main break and 2 days due to snow!
We lost 3 days here in Oklahoma.

I saw a couple posts about how a lot of teams tough it out and still drive to the work site, but I just wanted to point out that sometimes canceling a build session would just be a lot smarter. Students don't think about their own safety and will want to come in regardless of snow, sleet or rain. But let's face it, they are not the USPS and should not have to risk their safety in driving or being driven to build sites. Same goes for mentors.
Sure you might lose a day or two of work, but imo having an unfinished robot is a crap load better than an injured or dead member because of road conditions.
Don't "rough it out" on the roads, sometimes you just need to do the smart thing and stay home.
So ... where's all this Global Warming we've been promised?
Someone was obviously late to kickoff this year. Right before the FRC kickoff, NASA TV & the webcast were showing the satellite images of the polar ice caps for every year they had available.
In 2007, they all but disappeared in the summer.

Coloradans don't believe in canceling anything due to weather. Nor do we believe in plowing roads to a drivable state. :)
Don't look at it as a lost day in the shop. Instead look at it as an opportunity to hone your skills driving on the Regolith.
Well we didn't have any snow days in the middle of build this year, although it was close(knock on wood). However we did have finals in the middle of build which lost us a week.

our team is allowed to meet on snow days(thank god), the only issue is that were we meet is a machine shop, out in country, 5 miles from town, in the snow, up hill both ways (really, it's hilly on that road). So if school is canceled we will meet there, the only issue that comes to light then is, "i thought school is canceled so robotics is to right?", "No, i told you the last 3 days, if a snow day happened, we will meet all day instead of 2 hours that night, bring a lunch" Or the ever classic block, "the roads looked to bad," "well some of our mentors are here, some who had to drive 2 hours in that crap, to get here to mentor our sorry butts."
And they still don't show up...

Honestly, we Michiganders have not been getting the snowdays, the administrators have been, toughing it out, subzero temperatures and a predicted foot of snow, but school is still on. The road commission spent there entire plowing budget before the end of the year, and we cant even get a snowday.

officially 3, unofficially 0 we don't ask the students to show up if there is a winter weather day at the school, but they know we mentors show up everyday nomatter what.

We've lost two - we build at the school, so when it's closed, it's closed for us too.
Course, we're moving SO slow this year it hardly matters. Ugh. The room is hopping right now - let's hope they keep it up for the next two weeks.

I believe that the weather forcasters are no longer making predictions they are making proposals...:D
lol the toronto distric school board doesnt believe in a snow day...
so none...
LOL
Ya.... our bad weather mostly consists of a low of 40 for a day or two... today it got to the upper 70's :D :D :D gotta love Florida
We just lost our first build day yesterday due to the monster snow storm that hit the east coast. :0(
Where our team is, we pretty much never get snow days. We had one during December, but haven't had any during build so far, thankfully.

Our schools let out early Monday for the ice storm and have had no power since then and no hope of power for days. Most of our engineering mentors are desperately trying to get the Baxter Healthcare plant running again. We are trying to meet in my basement tonight and do whatever we can on generator power. So far I have only even been able to get in touch with a couple of team members. I guess we will show up with the first robot held together with candle wax!

this one of the snowiest winters i have ever seen in southeast michigan. (if snowiest wasn't a word before it is now)
Get ready to be hit by more snow on Monday
Bah, every year I hear complaints about snow days coming from south of the border. We haven't had a snow day here in Southern Ontario for more than 4 years, and we've had snowfalls as much as 20-30cm(8-12") overnight semi-frequently. Even if we did, our lead mentor has keys to the school and we'd go in anyway. I can't help but laugh at areas getting <1" of snow and calling a snow day. More than 1" of snow fell during my drive to work today, and I got here just fine. I might be able to understand if say southern california were to get 5" out of the blue, but 1 or 2" is no big deal on the all-season tires that come as standard issue on most cars. Cripes, we still get snow on Week5 of competitions for GTR sometimes.
EDIT: Power Outages are a bit different. As I recall, that was the reasoning for the extension in 2003, because some areas were without power for a significant length of time during build.

While Vancouver's exceptionally unusual massive snowfall this winter was conveniently timed for the Christmas break, so far we have "lost" build time to mid-year exams, the provincial FTC tournament, and today's build is cancelled as our VEX teams are heading over to Vancouver Island.

We got power on at our shop last night and a few brave souls worked well into the night. We will be doing the same for the next many nights I am sure. Our FTC team was scheduled to compete in Texas tomorrow and had to cancel because of conditions here and mentors couldn't go off and leave families without power.

The school was closed Wednesday this week because of snow. We used to welcome snow days, because our build facility is not at the school, and we could get in many more hours of work. Alas, this wonderful state of being has come to an end. Thursday, our "landlord" informed us that they do not want us at their site on days the school is closed due to weather. If it's bad enough for the students not to attend classes, it's bad enough that they are not to risk traveling to the shop.
The teachers were always of this opinion, and such "bonus" build days were always considered completely optional when counting attendance. Now, though, they're gone.

Milwaukee doesn't get snow days as often as we get cooooold days.
And for UPS, we build at the one of the best shops in town. But its a school.
So we loose time for any weather days, or when bad behavior cancel's the school's after-school activities (oh, the perks of inner-city schooling).

This is our 4th season and today is the first time we have lost a day because of the snow. We don't mind because it doesn't snow like this too often in London but with 15 days left till shipping  we could have done without it.
I live in Hawaii no snow  hehe but know what snow is because of Vancouver:D but still lost a day cuz of wind and rain yeah it wasn't so bad:yikes:

Winter is really weird this year, we barely have rain here... so we have plenty of days to work but no motivation or knowledge XD
For some reason, in the 12 years of our existence, the BeachBots have never had a "snow day". But in some previous years we have had "movie days", where a production company would move into our old build facility for a few days. We could not be there during the actual filming. A few lucky people were around once when the pyrotechnicians were doing a rehersal. I'm told it was quite spectacular.

This is how many of the Canadian teams feel, when we hear about school's closing in the states for an inch or two of snow. Granted, much of the time we don't get 2 feet, but 6-8 inches is a semi-frequent occurrence, and we take it without so much as flinching.
