Sounds like some kind of network problem. Too bad I don't know more about networks. Sorry:(

Since I am not a network specialist, so I am just guessing what the problem is
Are you behind a firewall?
If you are, the specific port that FIRST uses to send the data is blocked. You if you can turn off your firewall for the duration of the registration?
Your proxy settings might be messed up.
There are so many proxy settings like SOCKS4, SOCKS5, HTTPS, and so on.
If your web browser is misconfigured that might cause an error.
To correct this you have to go into your preferences, inside your browser.
On IE 5
it is Edit>>Preferences>>Network>>Proxy Settings
Than click off any proxies that you are using, for a temporary time. Than try to register.

While I'm not totally sure what the problem is, at least when I experienced it the past couple days, the error was intermittent. I believe it's simply the fact that their database server is overloaded at the moment. Just give it a bit of time and try again later. It usually comes back up.
