About Combustion ...

I haven't used it before ... is it worthwhile? What do you use it for? How does it help your animation?

Its either Adobe After Effects or combustion. If you use the layer rendering technique (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/tutorials/passes_layers/passes_layers.html), it helps you composite all of your layers. Layer rendering will let you produce this kind of result.
