It's official. The 2009 Marc event is official so please mark your calenders. We had an outstanding turnout last year and are looking forward to an even better event this year. Especially with a pig roast for our team social. Attached are the fliers and registration forms for the event. The deadline for the entry form is May 30th and the non-refundable entry fee is due by June 14th. Please pay close attention to the volunteering because there is a team discount for those who help ref and que. We have a new volunteer coordinator this year and I want to personally thank Lisa Perez for taking on this position. Anyone interested in volunteering please wait for Lisa to complete our volunteering needs and she will post it.

KoKo,
That would be great. We sure could use your help. By the way, I am in the works with getting the school to remove the center door jamms (at my cost of course) so our robots can easily get through the doors. Trust me queing will be a lot better this year.

Hopefully 910 will be returning again. The past two years have been awesome, so I'm looking forward to coming back, and I know the team is too.

I hope we we can go too. Last year MARC was a blast, and by far the better of the two off season events we attened.

i know my team can't wait for the marc for three reasons one it's our home field :) second the new hog roast ketron and i are planning and third all the great team that will be coming to our event and hopefully some of the teams will let me get behind the wheel of there amazing bots :) :yikes: :D

I'd rather have more people work que.
I am working hard to get que up to you and six others (so you all can have plenty of breaks and enjoy the enterainment). Also, I have submitted the paperwork to have the doors jamms at the entry points into the gym be replaced with removeable ones. This will allow us to have the robots come in one side of the gym and exit the other side. I believe this will ease the flow of robots.

I should be able to volunteer and would be glad to help Koko with queuing, or wherever you most need the help. I think you'll be able to get two or three more from our team as full time volunteers, but don't quote me on that.

To clear up some confusion people had about our flyer ($150 for returning MARC teams) this is for the first year teams that came to marc pay $150
$200 for teams new to the MARC Competition means any team that did not come from the first year
MrFixIt2719
19-04-2009, 11:10
hey everyone the first championships just finished and it was a good one but now that the championships are over it's time to think about the off seasons and the funnest one this year will be the M.A.R.C Event it is a two day event friday and saturday for $200 for all teams that were not at the first year of M.A.R.C this year we will be having a hog roast social with video games and cards so it should be alot of fun so i am hoping alot of teams come were looking at 42 teams but if we get more offers we will try to work things out to fit more.
We missed it last year, i hope we can make it this year!
MrFixIt2719
20-04-2009, 00:23
no this is not an invite event it's more first come first serve but like i have stated if we get past our 42 team limit we are looking at ways to expand to fit more teams but it open to anyone who wants to come so feel free to register and if you have any other qeustions just leave a post and i will check. so i hope you guys can make it

Currently there are 10 teams that said they are coming for sure with 9 returnees that said they had a blast last year. This year is going to be even better with the hog roast social. These all are excellent teams that know how to have a good time and I know this event will be a blast already. We are still looking for volunteers so if you are interested please contact Lisa. By the way 910 gave me a recommendation of a talent show with the pig roast. I think this will be an excellent idea. Any other suggestions please feel free to comment.
The teams on my list are:
240
910
1243
1504
1528
1718
2591

I really encourage everyone to come to this event. Even in its first year just getting started it was a ton of fun, and last year was fantastic. With the pig roast and other fun stuff going on I'm sure it will be even better this year.

I am pretty sure that team 47 will be there this year. We had a blast the first year of MARC but the change of dates last year prohibited us from returning last year. Hope to see everyone there.
Steve Ketron
22-04-2009, 14:26
Received 47's registration form a couple days ago. I also just received word that 1732 will be traveling again from Wisconsin for our event. Combined with the teams mentioned earlier, I know that I am going to enjoy hosting this event. Thanks to all those teams that consistantly come back year after year.

well of course it's a blast when you have such good teams like foley, hot, delphi, hilltoppers, chickens, martians and more martians,Dragons, Tempest, Syntax Errors, and Advanced Power, penguins, frogs, pirates and now our second home team the trojans, and many many more and hopefully with more teams it will be even better especially with the hog roast

hmm. 3119 will most likely apply. We were just looking at the prices and app information. 910 is going!! YAY!!
The mentor round will be so sweet. Our current coach will look so funny driving our bot. You think you can get some practice time into the competition also. We like to get some warm up time before the actual matches. :)

yes there will be practice matches friday starting in the afternoon until the hog roast unless we get alot of teams then we will have practice matches that are just come out when you want kind of a first come first serve then we will start some matches on friday evening before the hog roast

The best part about this competition is you get the see the competitiveness and continuous improvement of all teams. Not just the well known teams. Every year I am very impressed with the teamwork, upgrades, and awesome alliances formed by teams named Dragons, Tempest, Syntax Errors, and Advanced Power just to name a few. This is the reason I put on this event. To see these teams form such great alliances and push the competition to the next level.
Not to mention, I have been known to spend a little time socializing with some really great people.
Steve Ketron
23-04-2009, 08:36
Is this an invite only?
This event is on a first come basis with the exception of the orgininal 12 teams. They are rewarded for trusting us on putting on an eventful competition that first year by having a guarrenteed spot in the competition as long as they submit their registration form before the deadline.
Those twelve teams are:
47 "Chief Delphi"
70 "More Martians"
226 "HammerHeads"
240 "Tempest"
279 "Tech Fusion"
503 "Frog Force"
910 "Foley Freeze"
1023 "Bedford Express"
1243 "Dragons"
1504 "Desperate Penguins"
1528 "iPirates"
1732 "Hilltoppers"
Again I really want to thank these teams for giving me there support while trying to start-up an off-season event.

.An e-mail sent to me that I thaught I should post:
"I looked at the informational page for MARC and I saw that it is starting at 1 on Friday. Will those be full matches or just practice?"
-Jack
my reply:
"I am looking at how many teams we get and how many qualification matches we want to have. I perfer to have at least 8 matches each. I want to let teams come in early and get practice then possibly start quals around 4 - 730. This is something that I am going to pass out to the teams after I get the spots fill. To see what they think. Since we are talking about this, What is you take on it? "
The more matches you get to play the better. If we are going 4-7:30 we will most likely be able to get in 8 or 9. You should probably throw it out to teams right now, because it could change their plans. I am really excited for MARC and the pig roast sounds like a great idea.
This is what makes these offseason events so good. We all have inputs that influence the event. What do other teams think of having the actual qualification matches start on Friday from 4-7:30, then pick-up more matches Saturday morning and have open practice rounds from 1-4 on Friday?
Thanks Jack

I definitely like the idea of starting matches on Friday evening - more matches = more fun. We plan on coming out Thursday afternoon and our robot should be ready to roll. We're already making a couple improvements and look forward to a fun competition.

23-04-2009, 22:49
from the responses were getting this years marc sound like its goona be a blast especially when you make necessary improvemnets to your bot to make it the toughest comp which i think is the best kind of comp cuz we have made some improvements to our bot so we will be ready to roll cuz we have changed our bot like three times in two events this year. but i am feeling this design is our best one yet :)
Can we have a mentor match again????
I think 830 is planning to attend...

Actually, the $25 is for teams that provide refs/queing and $50 for the head ref. NOT every volunteer gets a discount. There is still positions open. I am having teams email me about their interest to participate and they are coming so please find out if your team is coming and turn in the registration form to get your spot.

Steve, what are the specs going to be for the mentor driver matches? I think the IRI has some regulations regarding mentors who drove in high school not being allowed to or whatever; is MARC going to be more freeform?
Steve Ketron
28-04-2009, 16:43
We are going to have a single elimination round with mentors driving. The teams are going to be assigned an alliance based on the number they draw. Your alliance wins and you move on you lose and your out. If we get done with this and people want to see some more mentor matches then we will have open matches. As far as roles go, here they are. Be a mentor for one of the participating teams and you can play and have fun. Easy and Enjoyable. Thats it :)

RULE CHANGE:
<G14> CELL Count Modification – If the assigned ALLIANCE score, before penalties, for the last
non-surrogate MATCH played by the TEAM was more than twice (2x) the opposing
ALLIANCE score, before penalties, then one EMPTY CELL or SUPER CELL will be withheld
from the initial set of GAME PIECES made available to the PAYLOAD SPECIALIST for the
TEAM. If the assigned ALLIANCE score, before penalties, for the last non-surrogate
MATCH played by the TEAM was more than triple (3x) the opposing ALLIANCE score,
before penalties, then a second EMPTY CELL or SUPER CELL will be withheld from the
initial set of GAME PIECES made available to the PAYLOAD SPECIALIST for the TEAM.
This rule will not be enforced for the MARC event. We want teams to have fun and completely destroy the high score.

You click "more" on the left side of the list, then click "Add event" under "Maintenance" on the page that appears. It's probably easiest for one fo the event organizers to add it because then all the info will be correct and up to date.

Its still edgie with 3119. Im really not sure if we are going to IRI or MARC. I really hope we can attend 1 or both. :) it looks like MARC will be pretty awesome on account of the sweet teams that are going to be there.

There are roughly 8 spots still available for the MARC. If you are interested in attending, please submit your registration form as soon as possible. Thanks

Is there anyone in the Troy area that is able to give me ride? I'm tentatively volunteering on Saturday, however Monroe is quite a drive. I was hoping there was a team in the area that can give me a lift. I can drive to where ever your team is meeting and am willing to chip in gas money.

Teams, the awards deadline is approaching. If you are going to submit a mentor for the mentor recognition award you have to submit it to ketron@monroe.k12.mi.us before the 20th of June. Prior Woodie Flower Award winners are not eligible for this award. Submission is basically an essay just like the WFA. Please don't forget to show your appreciation for the hard work that your mentors put into your program.

Pig roast social is for all registered teams correct?
Steve Ketron

Yes, If you are a registered team then you are welcomed at the social.

And is there a permission slip or waiver needed for students attending? I apologize for all the questions, I'm planning most of this event for the team, and working from nothing
Steve Ketron
17-06-2009, 17:52
No, if they are attending the event with your team, then that is all we need.
So, did you get those door jambs out of the way and where can i find a schedule?
Steve Ketron
23-06-2009, 21:16
at a cost of $1400 to remove one set of door jambs, you can be surprised what I can fanagle. Yes the door jambs are removed. The schedule and robot route/floor plan was emailed to all main contacts. I will see if I can email it again. Please be advised that the red and blue areas are actually reversed.
By the way, I was told that Wilbur is providing me with roughly 230 pounds of meat. Hopefully this will be enough.

May I get a copy of that email as well
Oh jeez, did you have to go and give it a name? And did it have to be Wilbur, the smartest, most talented pig in the world.:( ;) ;)

How do the robots always know it's competition time?
First, one of our dewalts unscrewed itself. That's never happened before.
Next, our polycord broke. That's happened once.
Next, our shooter chain master link disconnected itself. That's never happened.
Then, after I leave, I get told that "the right drive stopped working".
What the heck Mr. Robot? What'd we ever do to you? Feeling neglected from the month long break between competitions or something? :D

Everyone knows that you're supposed to feed your robot and take it on a walk once per month!
Anyhow, is this being webcast? Seeing an all star lineup of robotics teams play a little more Lunacy (though my money is on 67) would be pretty cool.

(though my money is on 67)
I would save your money. We are sending a very inexperienced team down to MARC, due to some unfortunate circumstances.
My money would be on 910. They have a really good robot and they always have a good showing in this event.

Wow, I was expecting 33 and 47 to take it when I saw they were paired together. Or 910 and 67.
Figures that the NC Gears make it on top though, they had a simple but effective mega dumping machine that's always done well. Congrats to their alliance!
47 picked first overall... their machine is going to rock at IRI.
I tried the link above for standings but it was not updated. What were the alliances? Elimination round results?? What alliance won????

I was very impressed with 3096 and how they carried themselves and performed. That they didn't make the cut for the Michigan state championship shows just how scary Michigan robotics truly are.
Overall MARC was a great event and was quite improved over last year. Steve you and your team did an awesome job running the event. It is obvious that MARC is rapidly growing into one of the best robotic events out there.
I would also like to thank Cyndi Noraian, Ellen Pfafflin and Lori Thompson for their help with queing. Life is so much more easier when you have a competent full crew to watch your back at an event.
Thanks ladies!

Team 3096 did not do well at Cass Tech. It was their first district event as a rookie team. However at Detroit district event, they did very well. People underestimated their robot based on their final results of 6-5-1 and previous results at Cass Tech. They were ranked 18 out of 40 but were not selected. It was really unfortunate. Their OPR was 27.0 and was ranked 4th out of 40 teams there. We were there. We would have picked them but we were not the alliance captain. Their robot is awesome. They have a super human player. They could have helped an alliance past the quarterfinals and they would probably have made it to the State Championship.
It was nice working with them to reach the finals with two rookie teams on the alliance. I look forward to seeing their robot next year.

Well, MARC was a blast! We had a ton of fun playing what, 18 matches over the two days and hanging out with some of the nicest teams out there.
Steve and crew - really good job on the whole event. Just thinking of how it's grown since the first year and how you were putting everthing on your personal credit card just to make it happen (and losing money), to where we were this past weekend with 32 teams shows how good of a job you've done. It wouldn't have grown almost triple in size (so far) if you weren't doing it right!
To HOT, Martians and Redtails - our partners - congrats on a great job. One more ball and we'd have been in the finals and then... who knows?
To 1918, 245, 1250 and 1243 - congrats on winning the whole thing. When we saw your alliance in our bracket we thought, "there's one killer group" and we were right! Nice job!
Finally, to Grant... AWESOME JOB! You once again did a great job as our MC. Paul's got nothin on you! Thanks!!!
We'll see most of you at IRI next month. We've got a few "enhancements" waiting to be installed for IRI so we're really looking forward to it - and to seeing our other "cross-country" friends! Oh, we're going to be bringing "Freezer Pops" for everyone, so bring on the heat Indiana!
Cheers!

Very fun competition...this is quickly becoming one of the premier offseason events. The improvement from last year was tremendous...and that's saying a lot because last year was great. Thanks to Steve and everyone who put this on. Team 1718 will definitely be continuing to attend this event.
Thanks to 2851, 815, and 279. You guys were great alliance partners. Our strategy almost worked - we kept all the matches close, but in the end didn't have enough fire power to overcome a very good #1 alliance.
Congrats to 1918, 245, 1250, and 1243 on your victory.
Lastly, thanks to the mentors of 47 and 2834 for our mentor tournament win even with us being disabled from our trailer mishap in the final round :ahh:

This event was awesome. It was one of the funnest events that I have ever been to. Thanks to all who made this possible.
I would like to thank our partners for the elimination rounds...
33 - Awesome robot, awesome drivers, awesome friends, awesome times. Looking forward to playing with you guys anytime, anywhere.
2337 - Lock down defense in a pinch. Awesome job in the elims. Always could count on you guys for the match.
3098 - Never gave up on their robot, working to improve their drive train till the very last minute to be the best that they could.
Thanks again to all of you guys and congrats to the winners (1918, 245, 1250, 1243), you guys had an amazing alliance.

I would like to thank Steve and all the host crew. You all put together a great event! It is always an honor to play with and against so many good teams. It was our first trip to the MARC, and I don't expect it will be our last.
It was good to see so many old friends and make some new ones, too.
Thanks to 245, 1250 & 1243. You all did what needed to be done, and we worked well together. It was an honor to be on this alliance.
Congratulations and thanks to everybody we faced in eliminations. Every round was tough and every match was a struggle - just the way it should be! Special congratulations to 3096 and 2834. You are two tough rookie teams and I'm sure we will all hear from you in the future.
I would also like to thank Wilbur for his special contribution. Maybe one of his buddies can make it next year.
WOW, what an event! We had an awesome time!

Thank you all for the kind words. Ed Law is right we didn’t do well at all at Cass Tech, but felt we turned it around for Detroit. Not getting picked at Detroit hit us hard, and we couldn’t wait to get back on the field again.
I would like to send a big THANK YOU to our alliance, 2834, 830, & 1023, we defiantly gave them all a run for their money. I hope we can pair up again in the future it was a blast!
I also would like to send a special Thanks to The HOT Team (67), and The Bionic Barons (2834) for loaning us batteries in the heat of battle. Playing 22 matches with two batteries and one charger can make you a little nervous. Thank Guys!
Finally Congratulations to the 2009 MARC Champions 1918, 245, 1250 & 1243, you made one great alliance!
