I'm excited! Been hoping with my buddies on 2826 that we could get into the same division. It makes it even sweeter that 93 is in it too, seeing as we(my buddies and I) are alumni of 93.
All three members of the alliance that won Pittsburgh (222, 1218, 1743) will be on Archimedes. Should be fun!

Anyhow, this looks like the division I'm envying a little, because a lot of cool teams (93, 2826, 1986) from the 10,000 Lakes Regional that I was hoping would be in the same divison as us are in here. Good luck to you three!

It seams that there are a lot of good teams that are going to be here in Medes. I think that this will be the most competitive division out there.
And how many teams are from each state/country? I just want to see the spread?

We'll be representing the state to the East (SC). Only a couple hours away! Looks like 4 teams from the host state, and 7 from the South (FL). Good luck to all. Just think, next week at this time we'll be getting ready to uncrate the creations.

Hey Alex 6/9 = 66% not 33%, simple mistake no big deal. That is some cool information. Now we need to see how each team team ranked in their state. Its easy for the MI teams its at www.firstinmichigan.org. Who wants to do the work to see how everyone else ranks?

personally, i am very excited about going to atlanta again (as the driver this time;) ) i hope that we get to meet many new teams this year!
and next week just cant come fast enough:P
I know the feeling you got, i joined in o7 and since then i wanted to be on the drive team
now being on the biggest stage for robotics, I FINALLY get to travel down the mysterious path for robots because they seemed to travel like a mile in 2 minutes between the pits and the fields lol :D

yeah... it is a terribly long walk... first year as driver, but last year i was robocoach:P but it is a really fun experience, and i hope that you thouroughly enjoy it. because in my opinion, the clumination of the season ending at the georgia dome is a great experience no matter how many times that i have been!
I have been twice and both times I was in awe, first i was a scouter my freshman year, sitting next to teams that were from 1992 and ones that had won regionals and championships divisions and the championship and we almost won our division in ATL and last year i was a major pit crew mechanic and it was AMAZING being in the pits and walking around "scouting" in the pits and seeing all these ungodly robots up close in person, this year is even better cause i can walk right up to them and talk to their drivers and watch them up close in person( and score in them)

Here are some metrics I ran - numbers for the number happy people, with some ghetto bar graphs. The first two kind of go together, they tell the number of robots picked in each section. IE picked 1st or 5th - 16th would be the 2nd selection of the 1st seeded alliance. The second graph are the number of actual alliance captains. EDIT - My fake graphs won't line up when I post, so you'll have to live with offset graphs.
Pick 1 – 11111111111 11
Pick 2-3 - 11111111111111 14
Pick 4-6 - 1111111111111111 16
Pick 7-10 - 111111111 9
Pick 11-13 - 11111111111111 14
Pick 14-16 - 111111111111 12
AC – 1 – 111111 6
AC – 2 – 1111 4
AC – 3 – 11 2
AC – 4 – 1111 4
AC – 5 – 1 1
AC – 6 – 1111 4
AC – 7 – 111 3
AC – 8 – 11111111 8
Here's the seeding of all the robots in Archimedes throughout their respective regionals. Obviously these aren't going to add up to 87 because on average teams went to 1.60 regionals.
Seed 1 - 111111 6
Seed 2-5 - 11111111111111111 17
Seed 6-10 - 1111111111111111111111111111 28
Seed 11-15 - 11111111111111111111111 23
Seed 16-20 - 11111111111 11
Seed 20-30 - 11111111111111111111111111111 29
Seed 30-40 - 11111111111111 14
Seed >=40 - 111111111111 12
We have 24 regional/district winners overall (that includes teams that won more than once: 2056 and 2415, ). So there are 22 individual teams that actually won their regionals/districts.
I don't think Archimedes is the strongest division overall - however I'm still looking forward to having a good time with what looks to be a lot of good teams. Cya guys there.

27 semi-finals appearnaces(not including multiple by same teams)
36 quarter-finals appearances(not including multiple by same teams)

I totally have to agree, we might not have 20 powerhouse teams but that just makes it so that we dont always have like 2 or 3 in every match and it makes it easier for more productive and more level alliances and matches
cziggy343
09-04-2009, 09:12
yes, its going to be very interesting to see how all of this shakes out. because it does look like we have a very even division. that makes for a lot more exciting play:D
I'm all for even pairings and exciting matches. We had a very frustrating regional because, although out bot/human player consistently put up a very respectable 30-46 points per match, we were stuck either playing against powerhouse alliances or with weak alliance partners who put up very low numbers. Looking forward to seeing how our bot performs in a stronger alliance and on a more even playing field.

That is my favorite part about championships, that all alliances are fairly strong and you are almost guaranteed to never have a "cant win" match, and none are a cake walk either.

Not really too true. in 2004, we were on another alliance who built their robot in 4 hours because fedex lost their robot. They really arent too even always but they are more even than regionals for a large part.
Either way, I am excited to be in Archimedes which I haven't been in since 2004.
Not only that but I get to play against my alma mater team 1002 the CircuitRunners.
And remember, not every winning alliance this year was a #1 alliance. I would rather have 3 solid robots instead of 2 super stars and another that isnt too sharp.
Hopefully we can be the Hometwon heroes. I think we have the 2nd shortest drive if not the shortest drive.
Good luck to everybody! I look forward to playing with all of yall
even though it would be amazing to drive my own car to championships and be able to sleep in my bed while there, getting to be on a bus for 8 hours with team 1902 is something i just cant pass up =]

665 is changing our ball dumping mechanism a little bit... we were probably getting 8/10 balls in during a dump before, we should be hitting 9 and 10 per dump with no jamming like we had at Florida
Let's see scouting wise, I have split scouting between me and another teammate and I have 39-1341. I have notes on all of the robots right now..the teams I'm most impressed with right now are:
61- For lightning fast dumps and reloads
201 - Great drivers, looked like they were mostly playing defense - I'm not sure if there will be any primary defensive bots on the alliances in Archi, but if there is, I would bet these guys would be high up there on that list
280 - While seeding 54th at the Michigan CMP, they were picked 5th and have great ball dumping speed and accuracy from what I've seen
488 - Looks good, accurate ball dumps, don't have a lot of info on them
624 - I think I was most impressed with 624 - these guys will make you pay if they get near your trailer, reminds me of 1114 a lot.
868 - Target acquisition, quick dumps and quick reloading make these guys a force to be reckoned with
1114 - Well built as always, they'll make you pay if they get near your trailer - but they've proven they can be beaten.
Consider this my mini-Looking Forward post for half of Archimedes. There are other good teams, but these are the ones that impressed me the most. I may post my observations for the next half when I get the results back.
So who MCs Archimedes usually?

Well said.

What would you like to know?
Obviously, we're very happy with how our robot's performed so far this season and are looking forward to unleashing it on the world.
-We collect rapidly from the ground; it'll grab a group of six+ balls in two or three seconds, typically.
-Hopper holds 18 balls comfortably, more if we human load on top of what we've collected from the floor. We can also store balls in our conveyor if necessary.
-We can unload our entire hopper's contents in a bit less than 2 seconds and are 95%+ accurate. We don't sweat dropping one ball when we're carrying 16. :)
-We have 8 unique autonomous programs that run from any starting position. Some hit very hard.
-We have traction control on demand. I'm confident saying we had the fastest robot in both Portland and Seattle.
Our data shows we averaged 12.5 balls scored/match by our robot in Seattle over seven matches. In one match, we scored no balls because we got greedy and ran out of time after collecting 20+. We did not collect data for any of the elimination rounds, but were undefeated throughout at Seattle. Our +/- was about 16.
Here's a picture: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/33668
Let me know if there's anything more you'd like to know. :)
How do you keep them in your hopper? do you have an unloader kinda like 1625?
Greg Peshek
11-04-2009, 12:38
That's great.. thanks Madison. That should make my job a lot easier. I just didn't have a ton of info because unfortunately... no videos of your robot on TBA. Which is how we get a lot of our info.. a lot of watching film and analyzing robot's performance. But I did see your guys' robot on the webcast, so that info combined with what I've seen helps a lot. :D
How do you keep them in your hopper? do you have an unloader kinda like 1625?
Gravity? :) I'm not intimately familiar with how 1625's machine functions, but our hopper is a cavity and the rear of the robot that is lined with a length of rip-stop nylon fabric. That fabric forms a 'U', with one end fixed to the front of the robot and the other wrapped around a spool driven by two CIMs. We spool the fabric up rapidly and that 'U' becomes a '_' or, really, something closer to a '/'
It's not dissimilar to 20's robot or to any of the machines that lift the balls up from below -- 111 and 1280, for example.
Yeah, there are videos of all our matches available online, but I'm not sure if the folks that parsed them are okay with uploading them to TBA.
If anyone's interested in seeing more, you can find video of the Oregon Regional and the Microsoft Seattle Regional at bpsepaa.com. Login and password are each 'guest'.

I think that happened between Peachtree and Palmetto because I remember reading about them planning to fix it at Palmetto. Unless that was another team and something happened to 1746's robot too, but I don't believe so.

To be able to compete after something as crushing (literally!) as that, and make it to the semis at the Palmetto Regional is definitely impressive.
Best of luck to all of you on Archimedes!

ill confirm that it happened between peachtree and palmetto. it was quite amazing, given the time that they were given to build, to be able to have a basically identical robot to the one that they had a peachtree. so i will once again give a big kudos to them.

Team 155 is looking forward to competing with teams in Archimedes. It looks like our division is pretty even across the board. 61 is a team to watch!
Nutty 11 can sweep up moon rocks off of the surface, can also be loaded by payload specialist, and can hold up to 15. Our deployment system is a power dumper which can dump 10-12 moon rocks in about 1-2 seconds. Our human player is very accurate, about 85-90%. We were finalists in Boston. See everyone from Archimedes on Thursday!

A generally useful tool: use the frclinks.com (http://frclinks.com) service like so:
frclinks.com/t/[team number] - if the team has a website, the link will appear in the resulting page.
You can find pics of 1218 (http://www.team1708.com/images/028.JPG) and 3062 (http://www.team1708.com/images/Pittsburgh_Reg._2009_107.JPG) at the Pittsburgh Regional at www.team1708.com (http://www.team1708.com/).
I'm surprised no pics of 2056 have popped up online anywhere.

Similar to what I did last year (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=735425&postcount=165), I ran through 200 simulated qualification match schedules (all 102 matches, using the FIRST match generator). I used each team's average opr (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=76618) for their contribution to a match. I calculated the standings for each of the 200 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.
When I went back and looked at last year's data, a team finished within 1 standard deviation of their average seed 60% of the time, and within 2 standard deviations 95% of the time. Only 3 teams seeded higher/lower then their min/max seed.

Wow good stuff, while we all know you can't rely on numbers and statistics alone, it's a great representation of the field and seems to match up with my scouting thus far.
Quick question, how are the teams ordered on your list? Neither the mean, median, mode or any of the categories line up in a perfect order. Is there just a stat that isn't on there that's ordering them, or am I missing something? Thanks for posting this again.

Interesting data. Looking at the deviations and the seeding ranges, once you get past the first 8 bots its a pretty open field. It will be fun to try to beat the odds :)

It's ordered by the average OPR, from Ed Law's spreadsheet (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=76618). Given enough iterations, I'd expect the average seed to be be the same order as OPR, but it looks like 200 wasn't enough. It takes about 24 hours to do 200 match schedules, so that's my practical limit.

That's last year's stuff right?
Hey Joe,
Are you coming to ATL? Didn't see 330 on the list ...

Looks like your division might be unfortunately happening with one less bot...

I used each team's average OPR and the actual match schedule to predict each match and calculate the standings.

If you don't like the way your team did in the simulation, don't worry, OPR has proven to be only slightly better then flipping a coin this year.

Wow... a rookie (though not much of a surprise of one in 2753, to be honest) usurping 1114 and heading to einstein...
Remarkable!

team 343 would love to thank team 488 and team 118 for our absolutely awesome run in our division! it was truely a lot of fun to play with you guys. i just wish we could have gotten a little bit farther...
and congrads to teams 222, 2753, and 1218! it was a great battle, and ya'll did a great job!
Team 503 here sending out thanks to Team 1114 and 2056. It's been an honor to play side by side with some of the best teams in the world.
For myself personally, it was an amazing, to play with a team that I originally saw last year at the Midwest Regional. When I saw 1114 there, I knew that they would win Worlds.
I only hope, that we will be able to play along side 1114 and 2056 at IRI for it has been an honor and adventure playing with you.
Congratulations to our good friends at 222 and 1218, as well as the spectacular rookie team 2753, on an amazing performance.

Thanks all for the kind words! Especially thanks to out alliance partners 1218 and 2753. You guys were awesome! A special thanks to many all the other who helped us get there by encouraging us and helping us strategize. I won't begin to name numbers because I don't want to leave anyone out. The support from these people and teams meant so much to us and really showed what first is all about!

Great weekend! I wish we could do this stuff year round, but the cost would be too great.
Congradulations to the division winners. We had a great time playing with you guys. We knew we were in for some good competition when you took out the #1 seed.
Also thanks again to 488 and 118 for picking us, and being great partners. Our alliance scouted out the competition, and came up with some good game plans. 3 amazing machines.
I had a blast getting as far as we did, and was glad we turned some heads as the "dark horse". Our modification to the drive train worked well enough to exceed expectations.
To those GA teams that talked about hosting an off-season event, we might be game. There's also IRI, but I'm not sure about the money situation.
Thanks:)

C'mon....you know you want to ;)
Regardless...congrats again to 222 on an excellent season. I used to harass Henry constantly..."Always a Bridesmaid, never a Bride" not anymore for 222.
2753 and 1218 were also 2 amazing robots...the fact that you 3 ended up on an alliance together was almost unfair....almost ;)

For folks that said they didn't have a list of teams to choose from, they sure ended up with a nice bunch of partners.
Congratulations, y'all. It's about time folks were forced to stand up and notice how good you've been all along.

Thanks Madison. We honestly didn't have a list. We don't have a scouting crew per say. Everyone on our team is a multi tasker and there's no dedicated scouts. We had the same conundrum in Pittsburgh as well, however we learned to trust 1218's scouting. 1218 not only has a great robot but some great scouts to back it up.

Alright I've thought about it and we had friends from 103, 488, 816, 1712, 1629, 1743, 1923 and last but certainly not least a couple guys from 125 ;) helping and supporting us through our entire championship run. I apologize if I missed anyone, but Saturday is still a blur of excitement.

Congratulations to 222 our alliance captain from Philly, 1218, a team I've respected for a long time now, and 2753, the veteran I knew they would be. Hope to see much more of 2753's excellence in the future both on the field and off the field at our shop.

It's taken me a while to let everything soak in. Here are my thanks and congrats for our division:
1503
Thank you for having the confidence in us to pick us 2nd overall. It was a pleasure working with you guys and making a strong run in the eliminations. You're payload specialist was terrific and made it easy for us to switch our auto modes on the fly and still be effective. I can't wait to get to play with you guys again. Maybe we'll have to take a trip up to GTR sometime in the next few years  .
488, 118 and 343
Kudos for adapting so well against us. In all three semi-final matches you guys kept us on our feet. Not being able to see what 488 had in their hopper made it extremely tough to play defense against them.

Watching you guys was an awesome site. You guys truly do have one of the best robots in FIRST this year. Getting a chance to play with and against you on Thursday was very fun. I can't wait to get another chance to play with you guys (maybe at IRI?)
1114
You guys continue to inspire me and my team. Even though LF has said that our robot was a 254 inspired design, we were originally inspired by the simplicity and effectiveness of your 2008 robot. When we started this season, we kept saying to each other that we wanted to create a bot that could play this game as efficiently as your 2008 robot. This year you guys showed showed us never to give up on a robot. You guys have adapted incredibly well from your rough start in Chicago to your strong finish in Atlanta. You're a poster child for the phrase 'The Robot Is Never Done.'. I too look forward to play with you guys in the near future.
222, 1218 and 2753
WOW! The fact that this alliance could be formed was ridiculous. These three teams had to be three of the most consistent scorers in our division. While they couldn't put up the big numbers like some, they were consistent.
Just want to let you guys from 1538 know that you were definitely my favorite bot in Archimedes. Incredibly efficient in your scoring and chasing down of trailers. The double row of balls streaming out of your shooter was a thing of beauty. Your record did not even remotely reflect how good your bot was. How you were able to intake so many balls with a narrow format chassis I will never know. In my opinion, Archimedes did not send its best bots to Einstein, partly because you were not there. I think 1114 made a critical mistake by not picking you first. 1114 and 1538 together would have been an unstoppable combination.

Jeff,
Thanks for the kind words. It took a ton of practice to be able to pick up balls as well as we did. Between pinning practice, 2 minute drills and other maintenance work we spent a lot of time getting our drivers used to picking up balls. We pretty much ran our practice robot to the point where we couldn't run it anymore.
Really, it's tough to judge a team in 7-9 matches. Especially in this game. If I were in 1114's position I don't know if I would have picked us. We had a couple of matches where we didn't play our best and I'm sure that left a big question mark in terms of our consistency.
Even if 1114 picked us, who knows if we could have beat 222, 1218 and 2753. One thing this game has taught me is that NOTHING is guaranteed. No matter how good your alliance looks on paper. I've played in matches this year where it looked like we should have dominated, but barely squeaked out a win or even lost the match.

Hey guys I am wondering,
According to the FIRST rankings we went to 3 matches in semifinals, yet... I know we played 4 matches.
The first one was a tie (82-82) and the second one was a loss according to the score showed on the screen, we then won the next 2. I was wondering if FIRST reports ties in official rankings or if by some chance they messed up the score on the first one when the real score was 82-112 like bluealliance is reporting for the first.
Its just confusing me, so I am wondering if that is normal.

The FIRST scoring system treats ties like they never happened.
