Galileo might be the toughest division, but there are incredible teams in all of them. It will be interesting to see the win distribution over all of them on (similar to the count they have on the blue alliance).

340 is excited to have a chance to play with some of the great robots this year that, up to this point, we have only seen on webcast.
Also, Rochester area teams are going to be a force with 191,578, 1511, 1507 and us.
I can't wait!!! Good Luck to all teams, we'll see you on the field!
ISSSAACCC!!!!!!!!
I'm excited about this division....definitely nice to see some friends on our field that we don't often get to play with at the Championship!
Looks like a lot of great teams... and a number of Regional Chairman's Award winners.
I'm just wanting The Pink Team and MOE to sit near each other to see what the robot cameras do.

Can't wait to see all the old friends and meet some new ones! Looks like we got a great line up of robots here including our 3rd year in a row with 340!! :D
1511 is ready for action. See you out there!
While we're not with any of our fellow Hawaii teams, we are definitely looking forward to participating with our fellow Newtonians!

FYI: The Newton Division does hold the most 2009 Regional Chairman's Award Winners with 14 teams!!! Go Newton! How about them apples!

I'm dissapointed that Wave Robotics is on a different field than us, but otherwise I like what I see so far. Except having to face Winnovation again. This time, we'll be ready ;)
I don't know many of the teams on the list by number though, which is nice since I didn't want to face too many of the same bots at the tournament.

Team 135 cannot wait to play with the other GREAT teams on Newton. I hope to see Einstein, or, if all else fails, I hope to see the world champs come from Newton, so we can say that we played them.

only 7 days btw......
This division is great. Galileo can have their superstars, we have a very deep middle class that will make some awesome elimination alliances! Teamwork and strategy will win this one. If you want to see the best matches in Atlanta, then gravitate towards Newton!

I'm very excited to see the large spread of good, solid teams. We should see a decent number of powerful alliances battling it out in our elims.
Whoever makes it out alive to the big show is going to have a few more battle scars decorating their robot. ;)

Good to Compete with you again Winnovation 1625 and Cyber Blue 234. Can't wait. Also come to check out our pit everyone, we are working on some cool stuff.
Also we regret with not being able to compete with 1771. Not being able to compete with you in Palmetto as planned. Maybe next year.

There probably aren't as many "super star" teams in Newton as, say, Galileo, but we have a good strong field. We have a lot of those always-strong "100s" teams from the northeast.

So instead of doing homework like I should be, I've been working on a little flipbook / storyboard book of all the teams in Newton, along with their highest regional placing (for Michigan teams, both District and State), and their OPR. Would anyone find this of use? If so I'll upload it when I'm done.
(also if you don't have pics on TBA and wanna be in the Team Directory could you send me one? It's fun hunting on Google and team websites but it would be easier)

As the only Ohio team in the division we are very happy to see our friends from Indiana: 135, 234 and 292. They are wonderful representatives of Indiana and great examples of the excellence of F.I.R.S.T. in the state. By the way, they are all very good this year:ahh:

Dont sell your self or Newton short!!!! For thoes who dont know,1918 finished 2nd in qualifying and captained there alliance to the finals in the Michigan state championship. They battled tough in the finals aginst the dream team of 217, 67, 65 but was to much to over come. 1918 bot operates on the KISS method, very simple but very effective. To bad there ball sucker broke in the finals ,or it might of been a differnt story.Good luck in Atlanta an hope to see you at the off seasons events !!!
Here is more detailed information regarding CozMOE, MOE 365's bot this season. CozMOE was Philly Regional champ this year, with our partners 395 and 56.
See y'all in the dome.

It was part of 46's strategy. They wanted to fly under the radar as a "bad" team. Don't worry about it.

Disclaimer: 46 is now an internet joke )much like Chuck Norris Facts), frequently used in chat room of SOAP Gameday (http://gameday.mttkllr.com/). They were the National Rookie All-Star in 1998 (http://www.team358.org/files/team_lookup/?id=46&name=&country_select=&country=&town=&motto=&robot=&rookie=&min_students=&max_students=&events_year=&events=&mentor=&mentee=&website=&results=Find+Team). Then, they stopped competing (or some would say went into hiding ;) ).
With that Disclaimer:
I heard that 46 is the only team in the Baker Division this year. Whatever alliance prevails on Einstein will get the honor of playing 46. Of course, 46 will single handedly (with 2 placebo trailers) blowout the Einstein winners with their triple Moon Rock Howitzers and legal descoring mechanism :D
I wanted to post that before but decided not to hijack the thread. It appears to be as inevitable as 46 winning the World Championship.

Although I will not be attending the Nationals this year (its taking a back seat to schooling haha) I will be spending my Friday and Saturday watching the many great battles to come out of Newton. I think matches will be pretty intense and pretty close. Even with no MAJOR teams in this division, all teams are bound to go for the gold. Good luck to all teams and bring back the National title for the Newton division!!!!

I think it matters more that we're giving out all this help and parts out of our pockets. More than what we have to give. We have a lot not all, but you can't bring every tool or part known to man and fit it in a pit sized box with a robot and a few people.

I wouldn't expect any team to even own cabinet makers' power tools (unless they're sponsored by New Yankee Workshop).

Similar to what I did last year (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=735425&postcount=165), I ran through 193 simulated qualification match schedules (all 102 matches, using the FIRST match generator). I used each team's average opr (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=76618) for their contribution to a match. I calculated the standings for each of the 193 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.
When I went back and looked at last year's data, a team finished within 1 standard deviation of their average seed 60% of the time, and within 2 standard deviations 95% of the time. Only 3 teams seeded higher/lower then their min/max seed.

Looks like 687 (https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=687&event_type=FRC) is now in (https://my.usfirst.org/myarea/index.lasso?page=teamlist&event_type=FRC&sort=teamnum&year=2009&event=cmp&division=newton). Welcome!

Newton just feels like home to me. :) 340 has been on Newton 5 times out of the last 6 years.
There is a lot of Newton pride here, lets make Archimedes, Curie and Galileo wish they were in our division! Let's have some non stop cheering and excitement!
NEWTON PRIDE!!!!
ISSAC!
But... why and how?
Good question.
Similar to what I did last year (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=735425&postcount=165), I ran through 193 simulated qualification match schedules (all 102 matches, using the FIRST match generator).
Thanks Joe! I don't suppose you intend to rerun the simulation with the addition of 687, will you? :ahh:
ISSAC!

Now that would be a sight to see - a Norm Abrams FRC robot! :yikes:
That thing would have some major class. :D

No promises. It takes about 24 hours to run a simulation (most of that is generating matches). I need to refactor the code to add another team, and I'm not sure if I'll have time to do that and run the simulation before the championship.
687's average OPR is similar to 33 and 768, so they should do similarly.
They won the engineering inspiration award at the Los Angeles Regional, which is how they qualified. Not sure how they added so late.

First, I must say I am impressed at your analysis - neat way to look at the available data and extrapolate a result. Unfortunately, as the stats suggest, the analysis really doesn't mean anything. The standard deviations are too large to lead any credance to the results, as would be expected in an analysis with this many variables. Keep at it, if you can refine this it will be a very cool way to predict team's success!

Wait, Jim. I didn't see a miter saw, planer, router or jointer listed for 1730's pit. Or do you bring your own??;)
Let's put it this way at the Palmetto Regional Bilfred said that our team had everything but the kitchen sink. So you'll just have to come by and see what tricks we have up our sleeves ;)

It worked better last year because there was a much wider distribution of scores. This year, there's isn't as big of difference between the 3rd or 4th best robot in a division and the 20th. The standard deviations last year were about half of what they are this year.
The other thing this demonstrates is how only 7 seeding rounds isn't adequate.
The final factor is that this year it's much harder to separate a single robot's performance in to any single number. For example, your partner that pins another robot so you can score doesn't score anything itself, but certainly contributes points to the alliance. Last year's game was much more seperable, and in that case OPR correlated with our scouting very well (0.9). This year it's still decent, but not as good (0.6).

Support Newton! Or, if you can't pick, there's even one for every division!
FTC bars too, in case your team is competing in both!

Agreed, Last year was perfect for this type of analysis as there was no significant defense contribution, as Simbotics so blatantly showed all of us . We had the (mis?)fortune of being against them at both Midwest and the championships... This year has so many variables, it is about impossible to analyze individual robots using alliance stats. At Buckeye, I saw a number of defensive bots with no scoring ability score huge - they had human players off the basketball team! That is a key to the game this year which is kind of new, since the HPs can make or break a close match. It is also about impossible to show the effectiveness of HPs without dedicating scouts to watch the robot and another to watch the HP!

All these predictions and rating systems are great, but the only score that matters is the one that shows up on the board after the match. All are good in that they make us think about what factors matter in this game, and they give us something to do while we wait for the real thing!
All of them seem to be in general agreement, with the same teams showing up in approximately the same place on each. I would caution against trying to get too precise with any of this. In fact, I think you are kidding youself if you have more than one or two significant digits in the rating.
We plan to use advance scouting for two things:
1) Qual match planning - who are the scoring threats, who is likely to come after us, and who should we send after their top threat?
2) Draft scouting priority - since we really can't do a good job of scouting every team. We plan to focus on about the top half.
Not to be left out of the fun, we came up with our own system. It is based mostly on the FIRST in MI system (win/loss record, draft selection, and elimination performance, all normalized to account for the different numbers of events) with a scaling factor based on the Simbots "+/- contribution" thrown in for good measure. Did we put the proper empahsis on the correct statistics? Who knows. It must be right because it puts us in the top 10 (just kidding). It agrees with a lot of the other ratings, but there are some good teams that didn't make the cut, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Here is what we came up with for the teams above the median:

Not sure how statistic driven your analysis is. You seem to have left off a good number of good teams and included a number of teams that were picked teams at regionals, not the pickers.

All these predictions and rating systems are great, but the only score that matters is the one that shows up on the board after the match.
That's true, but you can't use that score to scout individual teams! There are 5 other robots on the field, that all affect the score! Making a scouting system based on that not only defeats the purpose of scouting at a regional, it's inaccurate because qualifiers aren't perfect.
Maybe I'm just critical because my team's not on the upper half of that list, though :D
Great work with all of the techniques so far.
One thing I like about the Simbots system is they look at each indiviual team and event. One important factor on this is to look for trends. Like anything else with time, some get better. Some do worse (because the field got better), some got lucky, some are consistently good.
The averaging systems can be dangerous because they do not pay attention to these trends. Some experienced teams had a great first weekend because there were a lot of dead bots at the regionals they attended that they could pick on.
Consistent top and bottom performers are easy to pick out. If a team only attends 1 event, it is very difficult to determine Lucky vs. Good.
Happy Data Crunching!

This is a good point, some teams show up for competition with systems that need some work while others show up as ready as they will ever be.
340 showed up with some work to do. We started 0-3 & then went 9-1 before losing 2 in the finals. The record shows 9-6 but I see, streaks of 0-3 then 5-0 in quals, 4-1 then 0-2 in elims. We have also had weeks to work out the bugs & make some changes ;). I love the speculation leading up to Championship & I do know that prior performance plays a part but, things can change.

Just to clarify what I said about team driven's strategy. We can score but a good strategy that worked well for us at one regional for empty cell delivery. We can score and especially because of our awesome drivetrain. We can adapt to many roles. And one very nice thing is we don't break like other robots. The only thing we've broken was in the pit by accident.

This looks like a great competition field - can't wait to see old friends and meet new ones! Let's make sure that Newton is the best all-around field in Atlanta! 768 is ready to play :-)

I guess im a bit slow but wasnt that a totally different robot holding and firing the empty cell from the beginning of the video?

It will look like a totally different robot. But really we just took off the shooter and took out our ball management system and replaced them with a couple inclined planes and some powered rollers.
The robot in the video was our practice bot.

If you don't like how your team did in the simulation, don't worry, OPR has only shown to be slightly better then flipping a coin this year.
Nice work Joe:
I am anxious to see a corelation study. As you said though, this year OPR seems to be less predictive.
Do you use a season average OPR or is it based off of last event?

Wow Newton is cool
How did team 33 Change from a spinner to a shooter. Theay went from a round robot too weaks ago at the Michigan event to a sq bot (did team 65 or team 68 provide the plans)?
Designs have been done for a long time. That is how 33 chose to try the 40 pound allowance.
There was actually a significant mod that occurred at State with the addition of a hood on the shooter.
The team then decided to try the other design that was actually inpsired by 67 (if you read all the 67 posts they did a shooter to power dumper swap just prior to their first competition).
I am not at Nationals and haven't actually seen it play. Hopefully it works out good.

You guys pulled it off nicely. We did something similar.... ;) It was awesome playing with you guys, good luck tomorrow.
Thanks. I will pass it on to the team. Hopefully they have exorcised the last EE gremlin. The jags have been intersting this year.

Go Gearheads!!!
I am sad that I could not join my team in Atlanta but they are doing so well and I am so proud of them.
I wish the best of luck to ALL Newton teams - lets bring home the Championship!!!! :D

A lot of Maryland and Michigan teams. I hope the finals are 1625, 234, 768 vs. 2970,102,33. There are a lot of strong alliances here. Is there a World Champion?

Correction to
8-1516,1867,88
it was team 1868 The Space Cookies picked by the 8th seed, not 1867.
Should read:
8-1516,1868,88
It was a great championship!

It was a little dissapointing that 1625 and 2970 didn't get to repeat their Wisconsin showdown in the Newton Finals elimination like I was hoping for.
Newton was a pretty fun and intense division. Congratulations to all of the teams and the 5th seeded alliance!

First of all, a huge congratulations to teams 67, 111 and 971! Your strategy and robots were phenomenal. Say high to the President for me!
Additionally, congratulations to teams 1918, 85 and 135. You guys had us (or at least me anyway!) sweating bullets when you beat us after Final 1-2.
We would like to thank Team 121 "the Rhode Warriors" for an awesome run! You guys were a pleasure to hang out with and even more of a pleasure to win with.
And of course, congratulations to team 177 for making to Einstein for the fourth year in a row. Team 121 said you folks were the robot to pick and they were right! Your robot was truly a dark horse and a fantastic find for our alliance!
With any luck, we'll get to play with any one of these extraordinary teams next year!
This was my last but by far favorite year. With a regional and divisional win, it was an amazing capstone to my experience as a FIRST student.
I guess now I've got to mentor!

Congrats to teams 121, 177, and 1507 for beating us in a 3 rounds in some of the closest finals rounds we have ever played in.
Also, congrats to teams 67, 217, 68, and 247 for showing that Michigan is the best place for robotics.
See you all next year!!

In case anyone is curious (we sure were, we felt we did much better than at our previous regional), here are the OPRs for the performances teams did in newton. The standard OPR disclaimer applies: just a number (especially this year), not terribly accurate, but fun to look at.

WHEN I SAY GO YOU SAY NEWTON! GO! NEWTON! GO! NEWTON! GO! NEWTON!
I also have to agree with others from my team, it was an honor to play with all of you down in the wonderful city of Atlanta, despite us not being picked into the finals. This was my first year down there and I hope to see as many of you as possible again next year! GO BLUE CHEESE!

Congratulations to 1507, 121, and 177. It was an honor to share the crater with you. The average alliance score for our three finals matches was nearly 100, and the final match came down to just three balls. When you win or lose a blowout, you tend to forget about it and just move on. When a match is really close, you either celebrate or agonize over every little thing that happened. You got the job done!
Thanks to Team 135. It was nice to meet you folks and share some good match time.
A special thanks to Team 85. You beat us at TC. We beat you at WMD and State. We finally got to stand on the same side of the glass at Newton! Thanks for all the scouting help and sound advise all season long. You are truly gracious professionals and we hope to see you one one side of the glass or the other for many years to come.
This has been a great year for the NC Gears. It's the first time we ever had any success on the field, and thats a great ride while it lasts. Maybe we'll go back to being cannon fodder next year (I hope not!). We got to meet a lot of wonderful people and made a lot of friends. FIRST is a great community and a wonderful experience for the the students. The robots are just the common thread that ties everything together and makes all the hard work, character development, and learning fun.
Thanks again to all the folks that made FIRST in Michigan happen. I believe it represents the best future for the rest of FIRST.

WOW... all i have to say is wow... those were by far in my 6 years in FIRST the best qualifying rounds at any regional or championship i have been a part of and there have been quite a few between spectating and participating... this division definitely was the deepest from top to bottom at nationals this year...
Secondly i would like to thank several people + teams... First off team 1507 the 5th seed in Newton for picking us to join their alliance... it was quite a coincidence that we happened to be sitting right next to each other on the side of the field as the selections were in progress and it couldn't have worked out perfectly... I am beyond happy that we could come to an agreement with your team due to our heavy feelings on picking team 177 as our last piece of the puzzle...
Next i would like to thank a few groups of people... first the drive teams of our alliance 1507, 121, and 177 for being great listeners, having great incite, and putting our plan to perfect execution each and every match... without you there would be no gold sitting around my neck still right now...
Second... the scouting team of 177... you guys were amazing... having data for every team and every match throughout qualifying and even more so in eliminations bringing down the sheets from each match knowing how we did, what we did wrong, what we did right, and what our opponents did... this brings me to my next thank you...
Jesse the lead strategist from team 177... you are the best person i have ever worked with for strategy in my many years in FIRST... you made my nationals that much better of an experience by definitely lowering my stress level if that was at all even physically possible throughout the semi-finals and finals of Newton...
Next i would like to thank our opponents throughout the eliminations of Newton, making us really work for our shot to play on Einstein... The 4th seeded alliance teams 2771, 365, and 1726.... The 1st seeded alliance teams 1625, 234, and 768... and of course finalists teams 1918, 85, and 135... thank you all for your very hard fought battles, you definitely made me + Jesse's life as strategists very very difficult and i wouldn't have wanted it any other way...
Second to last i would like to apologize to all of the Newton division for not being able to bring home the world championship to our field, but gave it our all out there representing our great division...
Last but not least... i would like to congratulate teams 111, 67, and 971 for giving us our first taste of what Einstein is all about and i could not be happier to lose to an amazing alliance than i ever have before... and congrats on winning it all i wouldn't have wished it to happen any other way... we now know what we have to do to step up our game and win it all and can't wait till we can play with or against you all next year down in ATL...
It's been a few days since the Atlanta, and the excitement of the Championship event has yet to wear out! As I had hoped, Newton was an awesome division to be a part of, absolutely stacked with quality teams and robots.
I'd like to thank team 1507 for leading us to Einstein as alliance captain. As soon as you picked us, we knew we would go far together. In 9 years, this was my first time on Einstein. Thanks for putting together the right team to make that happen!
177, it was great to finally get to work together instead of against you. We seem to always be up against your great strategy and stifling defense, and it was a relief to be on your side this time around. Plus, it's always nice to win with good friends from the Northeast! Between your amazing drivers, human player, coach, and strategy team, you turned out to be a better teammate than we could ever have imagined.
Also, excellent job to the rest of our division on making up such a strong field. I have never been part of more exciting elimination matches. Those SF and Final matches against 1625, 234, 768, 1918, 85, and 135 that went to 3 matches were almost too nerve-wracking to watch!
Also, I want to give a quick shout out to teams 1155 and 16. You, as well as some others, stood out as dominant teams all weekend, and were certainly on the top of our list. We were absolutely shocked to see that you were not chosen as alliance partners. We saw what 1155 could do in CT, and we know that you would have been an incredible addition to any alliance. Your dominance throughout the competition was definitely noticed by some!
I, for one, am already looking forward to next year. Hopefully we see some of you at offseason competitions. To those we don't, congratulations on a successful season, and hopefully we will all meet up again!

This was not one of our better years, competition-wise, and may have been the first time in the team's history that we were not in the elimination rounds. Still, we had a great time in Atlanta. The competition on Newton was intense, and the 1507-121-177 alliance represented us well on Einstein.
My most vivid memory of Team 121, Rhode Warriors is still from 1998, when they were runners-up to Team 45, TechnoKats, which I was with at the time. That was the last year without alliances, so being with the last "solo" winning team of the Championship is still one of the high points of my life.
Team 233 may be at IRI, but we don't yet know if we can work out the logistics. Also, our being invited is less certain than the last couple years. In any case, I, personally, will be at IRI, and hope to see some of you.

Twas a hell of a division and a great way to end the best season I've ever had in FIRST.
First of all I'd like to thank all of our alliance partners, in particular teams 2970, 1629, and 2836. We would not have won our respective qualifiers with your help. 1629's defensive offensive bot was really underrated and without their scoring we would have lost the match. 2970 was a massive scoring partner that rivaled 1625, and definitely tipped the match in our favor. 2836 is a defensive behemoth, I'll be looking toward your team in future seasons simply because you guys have very intelligent drivers who can do exactly what is needed. Also because you had the best pit display ever put up by a rookie. Robot on a spinning turntable? Awesome!
Okay, 2970, I just found it really awesome that this unheard-of team were the leaders of an alliance with legendary teams like 33 and 102. Please be at IRI.
Congratulations to the Newton Alliance! 121, 177, and 1507 was a great alliance in general and upset all the way down the line through smart play. Any alliance can win any match with the right strategy, and you guys definitely proved that.
Now if 2970 went with Code Red Robotics... the alliance selection would have been different. 8th seed would have likely been 1714 / 1726 / 16. How would this have worked ?
This was not one of our better years, competition-wise, and may have been the first time in the team's history that we were not in the elimination rounds.
From the stats I have heard, it is true that this is the first time since the alliance years began. I would blame it on the lack of hot pink on the robot this year. More pinker is more betterer.:p (I think the lack of neon green on the thunderchickens actually helped them qualify higher and be a captain more often this year, but that is purely wild speculation).
DEAR GDC,
Please design next years game so that PINK can be PINK, and Thunderchickens can be Thunderchicken green. Also the BEES and Rush would like to place goldenrod yellow off of the list of targeted colors.
How about a Tie-die taret or one with flames. Both those teams are champions and Chairman winners. they can just coast for a year. :p

On behalf of Team 2970, my "other team", I'd like to say thank you to everyone else who competed on Newton. You gave us some great memories and fantastic matches. Though we didn't make it to Einstein, for a rookie team, we went incredibly far. So thanks again.
P.S.- Hope to see everyone next year when I start mentoring through Milwaukee School of Engineering's MFSO organization! See you at the U.S. Cellular Arena, all you Midwesterners!

From 2970: We are trying to go to IRI, along with 2970's "big brother" team, the Lakeview Legends "Robot Mafia", 1652.
Also: I, along with most of our team, agree with you on Code Red, and the fact was, we kinda skimped on scouting at the last second, hence almost being late for Alliance Selection, and somehow we didn't really have a second pick lined up. I believe that our alliance that we did pick was incredible as far as alliances go (and a big heads up to the Killer Bees, you were awesome, guys) and yes, it would have been very interesting to see how Code Red would have factored into our alliance.
And thanks to everyone else! :D

Of course not.
Robot Mafia (1652) is our Mentoring team. How could I forget. Although there was a bit of coldness between the teams...
