View Full Version : Congratulations Dave Lavery on the Volunteer Award for 2009!
Congrats to Dave Lavery (dlavery) for winning the 2009 Volunteer Award at Nationals!
It was a great acceptance speech too!

My goodness, hasn't he won this every year? No? That's criminal. Some day they will name an award after him.
The guy works a real job - and not a trivial one either - and still finds time to contribute SO MUCH to FIRST. (Maybe there's more than one of him?)
Now to find an archive of the speech.
Congratulations Dave!

Only in FIRST would we celebrate a man who drives thousands completely nuts with his banana-and-clownfish-influenced utterings.
Congrats, Dave!

No award in FIRST's arsenal can do Dave's service justice.

Well deserved, long overdue and yes, the best acceptance speech of the day.

Shouldn't that be volunteer of the decade???
That's one well-earned and well-deserved award! Congrats! And thanks for everything you do for 116 as well as the rest of FIRST!

I can't believe y'all have not figured this out yet !!!!!!
The reason there are two copies of the Mars rover is because there are two copies of Dave.
Except here on earth, one works for NASA and the other works for FIRST. They just look alike and are completely interchangeable.

Congratulations Dave for the 2009 Championship Volunteer of the Year recognition.
We all appreciate everything you do for FIRST overall, for the individual teams, and for the GDC.
I don't know what kick-off would be without your animation!
Thanks and Congratulations!

I too add my congratulations to Dave, and my surprise that he hasn't received this recognition before.
All-
Thank you very much for the kind words. They are most appreciated. It was a genuine surprise (yeah, you could probably tell), and I felt very honored. It had me completely flustered for the presentation of the Web Site Award that I had to then give to the Simbotics (who deserve their own round of congratulations for their excellent efforts).

Only in FIRST would we celebrate a man who drives thousands completely nuts with his banana-and-clownfish-influenced utterings.
Can you imagine how different FIRST would be without the influence, the practical contributions, and the visionary wisdom of Dave Lavery? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what a dark gaping hole of emptiness that would leave us and it would be difficult to fill and illuminate in the manner we have become accustomed to: with bananas and clownfish.
Congratulations, Dave. One of the pit crew in 418 told me that you had won and I was thrilled:
a. because he knew and remembered
b. that it is such a spectacular recognition of your on-going work and achievements
Only in FIRST would we celebrate a man who drives thousands completely nuts with his banana-and-clownfish-influenced utterings.
Congrats, Dave!

Starting early are we????
Dave, you know how I feel. For everyone else, if you have never done an animation and then tried to render everything you have no idea of the small part Dave appears to play in the kickoff animation. Days and computers (yes that is a plural of each, four as I remember, not a typo) are spent together for rendering those few minutes each year. And if you think game design is easy, try looking at the whole manual and conforming it to a game idea with a one year time limit (while holding a real job) after you have figured out what the game is and what the playing field is going to look like.
Congratulations, Dave :)
Your humility and accessibility are one of FIRST's greatest assets and it's great to see you recognized for everything you've done for all of us.
