I'm not entirely sure if we've applied yet, but if not Team RUSH will be.

I can't wait for this year. After ending up in last place place in 2007 (72 out of 72) with many robot failures, to making the semi-finals after beating 217 and 71 in the quarters I can't imagine what's going to happen this year.

2199 applied. Hopefully well make it, even though we didn't qualify for nationals. Hopefuly a 19-8-0 record, a semi and finalist finish, and an Industrial Design award throws some weight in the consideration.

If not, some of us are thinking of making a road to watch and admire anyway.

Oh man. I'm excited. Repeat of 10,000 Lakes anyone ?_?

What would be REALLY cool is (hoping all of the relevant teams qualify) a totally random qualification match comes up with 1714 / 2826 / Someone versus 2970 / 79 / Someone. Minnesota Double Regional Winner Faceoff!

I know the feeling--we've decided to pass as well. (No money budgeted, plus no school representative, the lion's share of our kids off doing other things...)

Next year, though, I will renew the push to bring some chicken up to balance out the pork. ;)

It was possible for your team to raise the money. All it takes is a team effort. Fundraising was our main method of raising money since we only had one sponsor at that time. Too bad we didn't raise enough for ATL but it could have worked for your team.

I count 20 Indiana teams. That means we're missing 10. As state hosts, I believe we need a perfect 30/30 attending to welcome our out-of-state (and country) brethren and sistren(?).

The Early Career teams do!

Seriously, the methods the IRI staff use to decide who to invite and who not to invite is a closely guarded secret, and it often changes year-to-year.

If anybody tried to register for IRI this morning, you may have received a message saying not more applications will be accepted. This was a mistake. I had inadvertantly put the incorrect time to close the form. Registration will close today at 6:00pm. Please don't wait until the last minute to sign up! Email us at pc [at] indianaroboticsinvitational.org if you have any probmems.

Man, this anticipation is killing me. A weekend until they announce the 72 teams and I won't have classwork to distract me!

(not like it's ever suceeded at distracting me from robotics but I digress)

Is anyone dreaming up any giant mods for IRI? I've got some new strategies and possibly some code changes in mind for our team, but nothing structural, yet. I'm dreaming of a corner load autonomous to throw 4 more balls into our feeder, and if my measurements are right (they're not) an empty cell loader in the front.

So you weren't kidding when you said there was not much to do in Jackson...let us know when you start running "simulation mode."

If we get in I think we're planning on making the drivetrain faster, and increasing the firing rate even more.

1507 did this with our drivetrain. We swapped a pair of sprockets out for slightly larger ones (25%) and it really helped.Highly recommended!

I know I missed some good teams but I did this quick. If I have time I'll do a more in depth predicition.

Winnovation seeds first and selects the clear two best teams in Lunacy, HOT and Thunderchickens. Fellow champion Wildstang moves up to #2 (Chickens were #2 originally) and selects Simboticss and Technokats: a good defense and offense mix. These two alliances go to three matches in every single playoff match, but meet in the finals, with the #2 alliance winning by 20 points in match 3.

:P this is fun

Thanks! Ive been sitting here in class just waiting for the announcement. Since we were not able to pay for atl in time, we really wanted to compete at IRI to really show what we are made of and show how gracious our team is toward others and more. From the IRI website (http://indianaroboticsinvitational.org/2009/?page_id=36): Early Career / Pre-Rookie Teams are not part of the 72 Team IRI field of teams.

It seems likely that a rookie team competing in the field of 72 will be excluded from participating in the Early Career Challenge.

Although I'm disapointed we didn't make it, I feel a little better when looking at some of the other teams that were not invited. When you have two teams playing Saturday afternoon at the Championship, the top pick at one of the tougher regionals, and many finalist and semifinalists, not get invited, you know you have a strong field of teams. I'm glad I'm not in the position of choosing which teams to invite.

Anyway, my prediction (or teams I would like to see win) is 111-68-469-910.

Looks like CA gets a strong presence (8 West Coast teams, 7 of which are CA) this year. A few years ago for dodgeball you guys were complaining that the "West" was all "Midwest". Now, do you still have the Poof balls, so you can really have an East vs. West matchup?:D

This is probably the strongest showing that the West Coast has yet sent to IRI.

Look at the team list again please. IRI is one place where extremely competent teams get left out. That's the way this field works. Either you fit into a strategy or you don't. There's also plenty of teams who applied and didn't get in when they could be argued to replace some on the list. Its just tough.

By the way, I so wish 968 could've applied and gone :(

I think if you were to put a pin in the map for each of the teams that have been listed, you would allow yourself to see a broader view. If you step back away from the actual robot competition possibilities and look at some of these teams such as the Hall of Fame teams that have been extended invitations, you will see a broader picture still. If you look at some of the mentors that support and have continued to support these teams, you have an increasingly broader picture. I'm sure if you could read the essay submissions, they would offer insight to the growth and development of each of these teams, casting a brighter light and illuminating the solid opportunities that await everyone who participates, who watches, and who learns from the IRI 2009 event.

The event planners go to great lengths to provide a well-rounded event, including the opportunities for the newly forming teams. They also value and support the very real importance of giving back, of charity, of doing what you can to improve circumstances.

Making predictions is a great deal of fun and I'm sure teams are over the moon with that aspect of the IRI event, but there is so much more to this competition. I think it was planned to be that way. I also think it was very very difficult for the selection committee to make the final cuts, leaving teams off. These folks have bigger hearts than most. I think they grow them that way in Indiana.

Just an .02. :)

Speaking of twins any idea what happened with the Martian Twins?

In the first post quoted 494 applied but not 70 as of May 7th. In the invitation post, 70 is invited but not 494. 70 was the more accomplished twin in terms of FiM points but obviously they have the same robot and both teams were at IRI 08.

I am wondering:
A. Did both teams apply? (seems likely)
B. Is this a trend where IRI is getting more selective and can't take both twin robots of the collaborating teams? (not necessarily a bad thing, as Jane says, IRI covers a broad scope of FIRST)

1923 filled out the acceptance form at midnight, and according to UPS our check should be in tomorrow morning at 10:30. :)

As excited as I am for competition, the emotion running through my head is pride. I'm extremely proud of the students on 1923 (as captain, and the one who does all the organizational work, I'm referred to more often as 'team mommy' than a student) for all the hard work they put in this season. I hope the mentors, teachers, and students on all the other invited teams are just as proud to be recognized for their efforts. Y'all did it! Congratulations.

We are also offering the loan of our 2009 twin and full technical support to any pre-rookie team that wants to compete in the early career event.
We will work with the event organizers and follow their lead in selecting a worthy organization. We sincerely hope that organizations take advantage of the nice opportunity that the early career event provides.

1884 has made the final decision not to go. We were extremely happy to be accepted, but we did not fully budget for the trip, and with next years funding uncertain, the team decided to roll the money over to next year and plan to raise additional funding from the outset for a second event next year.

That said, I think I will still be there with my wife. :)

New airport terminal open - entrance moved several miles west, PLUS MUCH construction on Indy highways currently. DEFINITELY allow at least 45 minutes travel time from Lawrence North (depending on time of day/traffic).

So as the applications roll in and I suddenly realize I have little better to do with my free time, I'm working on assembling an "IRI Book" of teams chock full of information on them that I've gathered through TBA / FIRST / etc. Here's what I have so far as a sample with my own team's information. Is this a good idea? If I get enough interest, I'll compile it for all 72 teams.

Any suggestions for additional fields of information? If there's enough interest and you've changed something and want it reflected in the book, PM me. (also if stuff like ball capacity isn't easily findable for your team's robot PMing me would be nice, again if there's interest in the thread for this book)

Nice ...

I suggest adding an entry for traction control (Y/N) - maybe to include type?
Also (as part of drivetrain?) steering - tank, crab/swerve, ackerman, etc ...

That is awesome. Oh and the Crystal bot is really sweet! I am assuming it is all Polycarb right?

Yeah, our robot's 100% polycarbonate. We work in a plastics shop so it's just easier that way, and we can laser cut acrylic to use as a template for routing out holes and edges and stuff. And then people think it looks cool ^_^ The only metal is in the gearboxes, motors, shafts, and some chain on the front wheels.

Oh, do you have a picture of your modified robot? I couldn't find any of how it looked in Atlanta.

Nice ...

I could get a traction control field (but then i'd highlight our team's complete lack of it :P ).

The second part will be part of drivetrain. "Drive" is supposed to be "Tank" in this picture. I should probably put "4 [8] wheel tank" for teams that double up on wheels too I guess, but I never found that mattered and it's a lot harder to count from some pictures so I might skip out on that.

So if anyone has any robot pics or information, please PM me so I can save time manually counting Orbit ball fire rates in videos. Stuff like ball capacity / traction control that's hard to find out from a pic would help too, as would pics if you've made mods since the last CD / TBA pic you've posted.

Something I'll need from all teams going to IRI that want good information in the IRI Book is their ball capacity, if they have traction control or not, and if you plan to have an autoloading autonomous (driving up to your HP and receiving moon rocks somehow). The rest of the stuff on the sheet I can get from TBA and your robot picture. It would be easier if you got this information to me but it's not a big deal. Some teams that have robot profiles on their website or list info with their pic on CD Media I've managed to find ball capacity information for.

Man, this kind of stuff I find really fun for some reason. I'm glad you guys liked the data sheet, it gives me an excuse to learn about every robot at IRI :D

Woot, we might get a chance to play the world champs 111 and 67. As if I needed another reason to get excited.

After watching a few dozen matches from regionals all around, I've worked up a really cool new strategy for our robot and team at IRI, taking advantage of some capabilities we never used on our robot while making ourselves less vulnerable to common defensive and offensive tactics other teams use.

I'm slowly but surely working on the IRI book. I have most of the data for about 10 teams right now, and I'll pick up the pace when I finish my last class. Should be done sometime in June so there's time for you to tell me I guessed your ball capacity wrong.

Now which is more likely to happen... a third qualifier match against 1625 in a row (this time it'll be fair, I swear) or a second qualifier match ("in a row") with 2826?

I could see 1714 / 2970 / 2826 / 1675 happening. A fairly flexible alliance with a superscorer in 2970, a consistent all around player in 2826, and a quick multiple-dump turret with defensive support in 1714, with backup from what I predict will be the best defense at the event. All Wisconsin winners... just none that won _in_ Wisconsin. Leave that to Fondy Fire.

While we didn't average 24 balls plus in Atlanta like we did in Minnesota, I'm looking for ways to change that. Intake changes, better utilization of the empty cell, adopting some Michigan strategy is the name of the game for us. Gotta figure out a niche for us among the sea of power dumpers and nimble turreted shooters :D

This message is for any mentors, volunteers, or chaperoned students that may be traveling to IRI from Eastern PA, NJ, NY, MD or DE.

Teams 341 and 365 are sharing a 47 passenger coach bus to IRI and we have about 5 or 6 seats left. If you want to join us, the cost is about $85 round trip. The bus will leave on July 30th at 5 AM from Ambler, PA and return by the early evening on August 2nd. (Ambler is about 30 minutes north of Philadelphia)

If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Thanks!

Al Ostrow

1714's been playing with our robot a lot at demos and stuff, and we're making some changes for IRI. Since we're such a highly anticipated team and all :P But we have a little of a dilemma.

We have a Long Range Mode now for firing the Empty Cell 6 feet away, so we don't leave ourselves vulnerable for a pin by slamming against the Fueling Station. (We could take off a transmission on a CIM and go 12, but then we overshoot on dumps)

Removing the camera will let us hold 1-2 more balls, so we're doing that as like many other teams we never actually used it. We now have a human loading autonomous bringing us from an initial load of 7 balls to 12, and it's fast enough that we can sometimes snag and hold a robot down with it (and hey, balls in the trailer of the opponent by the HP are just as many points as if they were in our robot, right?).

The tricky part for us is figuring out how to increase the capacity of our robot even further, in under 6 pounds. The rough idea being thrown around was to make the front "diverter" bay wider, but to do that we'd have to use another motor to make a magic ball unjammer (not too big a deal if we can design it) and cut off signatures by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers (much bigger deal, but at least Dave Lavery's is safe! :D ).

What changes are you expecting to see robots make at IRI? What are you making? and do you have any advice for us if you know our robot? (personally I bet more than half the teams will autoload)

We auto load

we haven't made many changes in our system, just sped everything up so we can be even more lethal.

it is also fun to look at the team listings too to see who is represented, Michigan is represented well :D just glancing, i managed to count at least 12 MI teams. that is 1/6 the field coming from the Great Lakes State ^-^

Changes!? What Changes?!

Wasn't the robot supposed to be done back in February? Aw, man... Now I gotta get the kids back together *sigh*

Wait, we can work on robots.... OUTSIDE OF BUILD WINDOWS???!!!

It took me all year to get used to it.

Most of our time has been spent fixing the battle damage caused by the Curie Finals :P We will most likely be adding some new autonomous modes to our robot, but no big changes otherwise.

We are adding a gyro to improve autonomous and also re-assembling our twin for use by pre-rookies in the Early Career matches.

All together it should not take too much time. (famous last words!)

Hi Everyone!

If any team that is staying at the Spring Hill Suites and has overbooked thier rooms, we would love to take over any extras that you might have.

We are about 3 rooms short.

We would deeply appreciate any help with this issue.

Thanks for considering this request.

Thank you to everyone that offered their help with our hotel situation. We recently had our problem solved and now have enough rooms.

As always, the spirit and concern shown by the teams on CD leaves you speechless. We look forward to meeting everyone at IRI. :)

Best Wishes!

461 will be there for sure! i'm excited, this should be a fun competition to attend.

does anyone know if volunteers are still needed? since i graduated i don't get to be as active in the event as the rest of the team and the underclassmen...

LOL, no worries. That's the name of the game in the finals :P We had some broken ultrasonic sensors, broken lexan, broken gyro. All has been fixed now and our lexan now has stitches with a band aid. I'll post a pic of the band aid, our drive team got a kick out of that one.

Hey, anyone know if it's against the rules to replace the main internal breaker on the power distribution board with a larger (ie. Higher wattage) one?

If not, I have a lot of stuff to do so our robot doesn't blow another fuse during a match... ::ouch::

Our captain just now realized that we don't have unlimited amperage and that there's no such thing as electromagnetic feedback from the CIM motors, and that our two giant fans, onboard compressor, belt motors, drive motors, mini-belt motors, and solenoid setup don't draw more amperage than the main breaker fuse will allow.

So it's up to me, the programmer, to fix the robot so it still has all of those devices, and they still can be pushed up to their limits, without blowing the fuse. Before the end of the month.

I kinda feel like that guy from the Apollo 13 mission... ::ouch::

From the website

Robots must meet the design and safety requirements of the 2009 “Lunacy” Game....The Referees reserve the right to Disqualify or require Repair or Modification to any robot that appears to be unsafe or is operating outside of the “Lunacy” rules and guidelines.

I would say no.

Have you really had issues tripping that?

We pulled A LOT of juice this year, and never had that issue.

FMJ 393 will be there, provided we can figure out why our wireless isn't working......

Have you reset your gaming adaptor and removed the WPA encryption from your last event?

Yes. We know its a hardware problem, we just haven't found it. Everything else on the robot works, so we're sure we will have it done in time. Thanks for the suggestion though.:)

PM me with random details and I'll see if any of my team's electronics guys have any tips, but it sounds like something has to go or run at reduced power. Which is a shame, as you guys had in my mind one of the top 15 robots in Lunacy at full capacity...

I don't see modifying the PDB as being legal, or necessary, in any way.

I was more referring on how to cut down on devices to save power if it is necessary. If it's not, then there's no problem, if it is, then stuff has to go.

EricH
06-07-2009, 02:01
Chris, until we know a) if we'll get a new one next year and b) whether or not the rules change to allow that modification next year, I would assume that modifying it is illegal.

Even for IRI, I don't think I'd modify it.

Remember, it is part of the control system.

Chris is me
06-07-2009, 03:54
I didn't mean to suggest modifying the PDB in any way. I was more on the line of suggesting stuff to change, like putting a different motor on the fans or cutting one fan or something.

EricH
06-07-2009, 18:09
Well, you did say that modifying the PDB wasn't against the rules... At least, that was the impression I got, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who got that. IRI rules, it might not be illegal. FRC standard rules, it would be--and if we aren't getting another PDB next year in the KOP, then you'd have to get it yourself.

Actually, if the pneumatics mentioned aren't used much (and the total Clippard allowance wasn't used), the offboard compressor rule could be invoked. The 5-lb. "fudge factor" is more than 2-3 Clippard tanks, IIRC.

Could some motor functions be combined or reduced in duration? That would save some headache.

Oh, I'm dumb, I meant to say it is not legal. I didn't really read the question too closely... :(
