View Full Version : [FF]: 2010 Season Long Fantasy FIRST
It's time to start up season three. Season two went well and season three should be even more exciting! So sign on up.
Before you do a disclaimer:
Please make sure you have the time to devote to 40+ drafts within a one month period. I'm not going to require 40+ lists (yet) because I don't even know what weeks the regionals are on but what I will do is if you miss five drafts in a row (that means if you don't make one pick or have sent me a list) you will receive a PM from me. If I don't receive a timely response (24 hours) you are booted from the league! And I am very serious about this. I booted a Woodie Flowers award winner last year and nearly booted (twice) the guy the season championship trophy is named after( so if I'm willing to boot those guys don't think I won't do the same to an everyday Joe) so I mean when I say make sure your sure!
Thanks.

And for those that don't know quite how this works:
For each event (40+ events), you choose 3 teams. Drafts will be occurring at least once per day through December--we're trying to avoid Kickoff. Serpentine draft order (1-x, x-1, 1-x), usually starting at 7:00 EST. Drafts will be broken into groups (tiers) as needed to get everyone 3 teams; exact manner of breaking is up to whoever's running the draft. Points accumulate throughout the season.
What happens if you can't make a draft? No problem, just get a list of teams in that you'll want (and make sure that all the draft runners get a copy! You never know who is going to run a given draft.) We'll take care of getting you those teams, if they are available. If you don't have a list, you get random teams, so be warned. We'll take multiple lists at a time, too.
Trading teams is allowed. Grabbing a team from the available list is as simple as saying publicly that you want X instead of Y. Trades between players do need both players to say the trade is acceptable. No trades between tiers, please.
Scoring, for those that don't know:
20....1st seed
12....2nd and 3rd seed
6......4th through 8th
3......9th through 12th
2......12th through 16th
4......Quarter finalists

20.....Finalists
30.....Winners
42.....Chairmans
36.....Engineering Inspiration Award
15.....robot based award
20.....Rookie All-Star
10.....Rooke Inspiration
8......Woodie Flowers
5.....Regional Highest score
5.......Highest score / Highest Rookie Seed

Ed, can we have a new rule added that if someone is booted and you want to vulturize their teams, that you have to recreate the graph with that person removed along with the switch?
Ed, can we have a new rule added that if someone is booted and you want to vulturize their teams, that you have to recreate the graph with that person removed along with the switch?
And don't forget to put the teams into the pool again...
While I don't think we need a rule on this, good practice indicates that you should, on someone getting the boot, remove them immediately from that tier. Standard practice last season was to leave their slot blank for the first vulturization or two, then remove it entirely.

I love the game, but time will be oh so precious this year and I would like to get a feel for my school work before I commit to anything. There will be a notice before the draft closes. I would say that it'll be the day before we start drafting, which is usually around December 1.

How long will it take to get this thread stickied, last time it took us 142 days, can we beat it this year?
Alex, if you have a lot of school work but want to play, my suggestion is to create your pick lists over Thanksgiving break and send them to the people running the drafts (mainly Ed and Eric).

Actually, I've got some work for some mods: How about changing the sticky to this thread and locking all the 2008 and 2009 drafting threads so we know we've got the right one when it's trading time?
Definitely second the recommendation to do your lists when you don't have schoolwork/have some time off. If needed, I can send lists to anyone else running a draft.
Also, as a heads-up: I'm going to be trying something new behind-the-scenes. I have a hunch that it's going to really cut back on double picks. However, it works best if there are lots of lists. If it works, I'll make it public/open source, so someone with more knowledge than me can make it even better.

24 days, thats 118 days less that last year. Thank you Ed, Thank you Brandon and thank you to all the mods that go very under appriciated.
Now back to our regular programing. (just noticed that pun there)
For the record, if you want to help run the drafting or help with the scoring, just say so. We can use all the help we can get, especially during the time around Christmas when it's harder for some of us (like me) to do a draft. (Side note: If I have to do any drafts on Thursdays, I'll probably start them around noon-one EST instead of the standard start time of 7:00 PM EST due to unavoidable meetings. If I get any on Tuesdays, expect them to start just a hair late--I have a meeting that I can't get out of right before the normal start.)
We can take as many people as want to join up, whether or not you decide to help us out. Just make sure you have enough time first!

I want to encourage people to start making lists, there are plenty of events at full open capacity. These lists can be sent to EricH or Koko Ed (suggested both). If you want to want until closer to drafting they can be sent in the day of the draft too, this makes it easier to edit your list of a team changes their mind.
Registration is still open if you want to join but read the first post before deciding.

Dodar,
That is correct, you just make a list of the teams in the order you would want to pick them. You do not necessarily have to go up to the total number of teams at the event, you can stop wherever you want and if your list runs out you will be assigned a random team from the remaining pool.
Chris,
As far as I know this is the scoring that is being used:

Does anyone know where I can see the FF point chart? I want to know how heavily to weigh the Rookie All-Star relative to other awards. It should be at the top of the second page of this thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=868823&postcount=16). I posted it almost as soon as I joined up.
so just so i can make sure, when you pre-make a list, you just list the teams you like from 1-however many is at that regional?
Yes. A note on lists: You do not have to list every team at the event. When (if) your list runs out, you will be assigned random teams. It's as many teams as you want. I usually just hit the big teams, then wing it/take my chances.
Second list note: I'd personally prefer them without each team designated "ordering number. team number"; I clear out the ordering numbers when I prepare a document with all the lists. Just have them in order; that'll be great.

I'd love to play, but I'm a little confused. When are the drafts, and what kind of time commitment are we talking?
Thanks.
Drafts are as posted in the schedule here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=875953&postcount=47 with the exceptions of Philly and Lone Star (to be scheduled), while the MI State draft takes place the week of the event due to the qualification process. Drafts typically start around 7 Eastern time; exceptions will be announced when the random list is published.
Time commitment: As much as you're willing to put in. We do ask that you participate in one draft in five, otherwise you will be removed from the league. A lot of people use Thanksgiving break as a good time to set up lists to choose their teams. As long as the lists come in, the draft runners typically don't really care how they come in.
General list note: Make sure whoever is running that night's draft has yours, and you should probably also copy Ed or myself. We do communicate who has and hasn't sent in lists or made picks so we know who's on the verge of a boot.

The draft dates are in the second post of the fourth page but as I have pointed out, two events are missing. The drafts are often from 7 pm to about 10 pm.
You do not have to be present during the whole draft, you can either create a list and send it in or only be there when it is your turn to pick. (times are posted before hand)

Philadelphia, Lone Star, the MI Championship, and the Championship Event are TBD on the draft schedule; they'll be added when we know. (Ed, I can probably arrange to run those in the early- to mid-December portion of the draft if you want.)
so for pre-making lists, who would we send them to?
and if we can make it to the actual draft, what times do they usually start?
Lists get sent to whoever is running the draft; usually that's either Koko Ed or myself. Best idea is to send to both of us, as when I'm not running the draft I'll be trying to do a check on accuracy. (And I keep the score sheet, which has a way to track the number of drafts you miss in a row.)
Drafts start at 7:00 EST, unless otherwise noted.

Could we email our lists in an excel spreadsheet (1 tab per regional) instead of doing it in one long PM?

I plan on knocking out all of my lists during Thanksgiving break. How many teams should they have?
XaulZan, Excel works fine. You can also do one list per day, or however you want to do it. Last year, someone posted his lists online on a site he updated, then gave the runners a link to the list.
Chris, as many as you think you need. Some events, you might only have one or two teams you want. Others, the field is really deep, so you want more teams.

I'm considering completely reinventing the way I decide which teams I want to draft. 2nd place just didn't cut it last year.
all I need to do is have one list... rank EVERY TEAM IN FIRST, and then just break it down for every regional.
How many teams can there possibly be?

Wait, that sounds like what I did over the summer. It works for me. there are about 1600 teams to look through to make that list, or go by the award pages. I found info ranging back to 2002 which is more than enough.

Same here, although now a lot of award info is a bit jumbled up. I should update the rankings soon though.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you get your fill of turkey and family.
There are four and a half days left for registration, if you are interested now is the time to sign up. We are at a good number, a few 3 tier drafts but most can get by with two.
You have 5 days and 6 hours to finish your pick list for the San Diego Regional.
Eric and Ed, I am still willing to help run drafts.

Hmm, I should probably start making any kind of lists at all. I forgot that's what I planned on spending holiday break doing. Heh.
rtfgnow, it looks like we'll have it covered for the first half of the drafting portion. After 12/17, though, my availability becomes questionable/nil (something about going home).
For the drafts I'm not running, I'll be checking accuracy using a program I wrote to help with draft running. If I see a discrepancy, I'll look into it--and note it if necessary in the thread. I'll try to do the same thing with the drafts I'm running.
Ed, when are we going to do Philly and LSR? LSR is Week 5; Philly is Week 4.
Oh, and I have my lists mostly done:).

I need someone to jump in on December 2nd and 9th due to a pre season meeting my team is having.
I can do the 2nd. I'll probably already be doing the 9th...

Just a PSA or two:
When you send your lists in, it's a good idea to send them both Ed and myself. I run a checking program in the background; I'm trying to find and eliminate bugs/things I don't like. (So far, I'm two bugs in two drafts.) And, while Ed will usually do the drafts, I often do them too. So it's just plain a good idea. (If someone else is doing the draft, make sure they get a copy, too.) I also keep attendance--remember, 5 missed drafts in a row, and you get a warning.
PSA number 2: We get the team lists from the FIRST site. TBA is only as reliable as its most recent scrape of the FIRST site. Just so you know...

There was an issue in FLR League one, and I would like to get some input from the other people in the league. Please, imagine yourself in my position. I took the time to make my list and submitted it on time. When it got to my turn (with back to back picks at the end of round 1), my top 3 teams were 610, 229 and 145. I ended up with 145 and 610. I posted in the thread, pointing out the error. I then got a PM from EricH with a trade proposal so I can get 229 by trading some of my other teams. I declined, saying that I don't think it is fair for my to trade away my other teams for a team that should be mine.
I have offered two other solutions:
1. Rerun the draft. (yes, it would take some extra work, but there is the life lesson of if you don't want to do things again, do them right the first time)
2. Swap out 145 for (another) 229. There would be two 229s in the draft, but I don't think that is a big problem.
Does anyone have any problems with either of these solutions? Do you have a better solution?
Chris is me
08-12-2009, 13:49
A really sticky situation indeed. I think rerunning the draft is the "most fair" solution, but that takes work and time many of us don't have, so I'd go with the second solution just to be done with it.
Talk to Barry about his Traverse City draft. He was 4th to select and didn't get anyone in his top five. I also had an issue in the same draft, though not as bad as Barry's.
Ultimately it is just a game (even if I have stayed up too late many a night creating my team list), so it is hard for me to work up too much frustration. On top of that, Ed and Eric are doing this on their own time and I can't see it being an easy task so it isn't worth being mad at them either.

I am trading 340 to Eric for 229 and then trading 229 to you for 145 and then dumping 145 for 2228 and that will be the end of it.

2. Swap out 145 for (another) 229. There would be two 229s in the draft, but I don't think that is a big problem.
Does anyone have any problems with either of these solutions? Do you have a better solution?
You should get the teams that were on your list. Anything other then that is not right and is totally wrong.
(I've had this done to me already this season.)

I take an hour analyzing every regional, and put an extra bit of time creating a slick looking excel sheet. I put between 8-10 hours in every week.
This game is run by volunteers trying to give everyone a good time. There are two solutions: Run drafts yourself (which I have done in the past and enjoyed doing), or be sure you are online at 7:00 every night to correct mistakes IMMEDIATELY. Ed and Eric are on almost every night at 7, and their lives are just as busy as mine. both are accommodating to mistakes that occur soon after it has been made.
I was not online at 7 on Saturday, I was watching football. I didn't get my pick, I was frustrated with it, voiced my concern, and Eric said he updated his program. I have no right to a rerun of the draft; I'm looking forward to his new program to get all of the bugs out of it so future years can be run flawlessly.
... I'm looking forward to his new program to get all of the bugs out of it so future years can be run flawlessly.I think I caught the last one today during some spare time. I'll give it another couple-three drafts to make sure I haven't missed anything, then get a how-to together and get it posted somewhere. The really good part of the program is that if it fails, you still have all the lists and orders in a text file, so doing it manually becomes a lot easier. I've had to do that more than once when a bug came along.
And if you'd like to run a draft and see just how frustrating it can really be, we may have an opening tomorrow night, if a second runner hasn't been located. We'll certainly have some later in December and early January.

Can't do tomorrow, I already have two meetings scheduled during the draft.

I would like to thank Eric and Ed for working the problem out. I certainly understand how difficult it must be and appreciate fixing the problem. Thanks!
I agree that this is just for fun, but if there are a lot of problems and people don't get the teams they want, then I don't think it is very fun (it would be easy to give everyone random teams but that really isn't much fun). That being said, I don't think it is anywhere close to that point.

Neither Wifi or rocketperson44 participated in tonight's draft. If they do not participate in tomorrow's draft they will be booted from the league.

Think was the operative word here. That bug cropped up again tonight, and forced me out of the program mid-draft. (I don't like to argue with computer programs). So I did some rewriting and totally squashed it. Still going to be a couple of drafts of testing before I release the program, though. Might also be some cosmetic work on the outputs, but that doesn't count as work.
(And if you ask how totally it was squashed, I deliberately tried to trigger the function that had been at fault by both methods it's called. It triggered exactly when it was supposed to, and operated flawlessly.)

The Cass Tech drafting starts at 6:00 EST tonight. This is a change from normal; I had something come up almost at the last minute. This is also a one-time change, and confined to Cass Tech.
Also, I have a request that may sound odd to some of you. Could some of you who send in lists add in a team or two that isn't attending, in random locations? I'd like to fully verify that the program I've been working on works under "battle conditions", specifically a function that checks for teams that aren't attending at all. Don't worry, I'll be checking manually to make sure that you don't get a non-attending team.

I've posted that drafting program I've been working on to CD-Media. It is fully functional, though there may be tweaks that need to be made eventually. If you're going to use it, you should probably take a look at the instruction sheet that's with it.

I read the instructions and I think I royally screwed up somewhere. I extracted the folder, copied the example lists (changing the initial 5 in the second line to one) into a .txt file next to the .exe. I ran the program and input 2 for the number of players and input the name of the .txt fil and the window closes on me.

Does the file name have any spaces in it? (And did you remember the extension?) Either one of those will cause the program to quit suddenly.

The dreaded spaces.
I am confused on how to set up the txt file. I know we are suppose to have a random list first, does that get a -1?

No. If you do and run out of teams, somebody gets the elusive team -1, who loses every game they play...

The first one won't be too hard to do; expect an update out later today. As for the second, that's part of why I have an instruction sheet. We'll see what I can do.

before you go for that update, can you make L assign teams going through the serpentine. So that L takes the place of L, L, L, L, L, L....
before you go for that update, can you make L assign teams going through the serpentine. So that L takes the place of L, L, L, L, L, L....
I honestly have no idea how to do that right now. Maybe I'll figure that out over Christmas break. I think I addressed that in the FAQs.
Here's what happens when you press L currently:
The program notes that the character is L, assigns one variable, and calls a list-picking function. That function checks for player lists, then enters a for loop where it first checks for the end of list flag, then checks if the team is taken. When it finds a team that isn't already picked, it verifies that they are attending (and triggers an alert if they aren't, which is what I was checking last night) and assigns them, then goes back into the main loop. The status is displayed, and the program waits for an input.
To do the list picking, I'd have to assign the next input to be L, which would keep it going until someone didn't have a list or ran out of teams on their list. The problem is, I'd need to do a lot of testing to make sure it didn't go into an infinite loop.

Why don't the draft results and team list export to the same file?
Why don't the draft results and team list export to the same file?
I don't remember offhand. I'll see if I can get something together before tonight's drafts start. I wonder why I did that too...
Edit: I've updated the program to reflect that I figured that out.

If we are, I won't be able to run it. I've got a 2-hour Differential Equations final at 4 Mountain Time (6 EST). Matter of fact, I'm pretty much out of running drafts this year; internet access will be not at guaranteed times until after Kickoff. (I can still do scoring, recording and some attendance; those don't need a given time.)

I was going to play around with Eric's drafting program last night and ended making what is for now a totally separate program. It can be found over in CD Media.
The program takes an ordered list of attending teams and a separate order list of all players in the league. It will generate a file with the randomized teamlist and a file for each tier with output formatted for direct posting here to CD. If you encase the created tier text in tags the alignment will be exact, otherwise it will be approximate like is seen in most current drafts.
I forgot to put this in the instructions I just uploaded, but the format for the time is "hh:mm" including the colon.
I have only done limited testing on this program so if you are going to try and use it for an actual draft please make sure you are checking the output closely.
Sample output:

I have uploaded a modified version of Eric's drafting program. This version uses player names instead of numbers and is designed to work with the "tier files" created by the FFDraftSetup program.
If you want to use this program without FFDraftSetup you will have to create a file with the correct formatting. The formatting should be very similar to what you are posting on CD with a few minor differences. All times must be either h:mm or hh:mm. There must be a single / before the start of the available teams list.
Pick lists files no longer need a list for every player. Pick lists are cleansed of any teams not attending while being read in.
In my version there are no overrides for teams not on the list of attending teams.
I'm sure I made other changes, but I don't remember what they were at the moment. See the modified instructions file for more info.
Feel free to send questions/comments/bug reports via PM or email. My email is my username@gmail.com
FYI: Neither program has been thoroughly tested and bugs will likely not be fixed until late Tuesday night at the earliest.

Sorry guys. I have some family over. The Troy draft is postponed until tomorrow. Keep picking if you are ready.
Looks like I have enough time to get more of the way through it, though. I can probably keep it going until I have to knock off (after it's done). Bear in mind, though, that I probably don't have your lists (especially in Tier 2--If more don't show up while I'm here, then that one will go to tomorrow).
Ericgehrken has missed the five previous fantasy draft and has been issued a warning PM. If he does not participate in tomorrow night's draft he will be dropped from the league.
This is his second absenteeism offense. If he does manage to save his status he will not be warned if he does it again and will just be dropped without a PM.

I am rerunning the Troy draft based on some lists not being given to Eric when he stepped in to help out.
Any picks made in the thread will be kept the same if possible.

Ericgehrken has been booted from the league.
His alliances are free agents to be traded for on a first come first served basis.

Vikes and I got a couple good ones, but I think Alex is now headrunner for winning the Elgin this year.

I had the threads bookmarked and ready....I guess Alex is just too fast. Or too much free time on his hands. ;)

Great minds act alike, had like six tabs open... looked at my clock that said "5:47", and I died a little.

I'm fine either way, but I'm not going to make the decision. If Ed decides to run the drafts tomorrow night that's fine, otherwise I'm going to go ahead and run it tonight.
If you can't make the draft you're more than welcome to send in a list. Any list from one team to all the teams at the event is fine (1 team isn't likely to do you any good though).

You were one of the ones whining about doing a draft on New Years day and now your whining about doing a draft tonight.

I did not complain about having a draft on new years. I just looked through the thread.
The holiday is tonight, not the next day though.
It aint like you haven't missed other drafts before and you actually were around those nights. So what makes tonight more special? Unless I hear from more than just you and Akash the drafts are on tonight.
If you really want to make sure you get whom you want then submit a list.

I agree with Alex and Akash. If it's not too big of a problem to change it, it would be better to have the drafts tomorrow.

Sounds good. Feel free to make your picks early if your turn is up and I'll try to pop in and fill in picks from people's list as applicable.
I have received a number of lists from Ed and also some from people directly. In each tier I have posted who I have a list from so you can check there and make sure if you think I should have a list from you.

Kidding. My drafts are submitted, it really makes no difference to me on which day they occur.

rocketperson44 has missed five consecutive drafts in a row and has been sent a PM. If he does not participate in tomorrow night's draft he will be booted from the league.
Also this is his second notice for delinquency and if he does participate in tomorrow's draft but misses five drafts again he will be booted without a PM.

Unless Ed has an attachment to a particular draft, I'll take Northstar for tomorrow night. The official team lists appear to be down at the moment so I will hold off on posting the randomized list and tiers. If the issue isn't fixed by tomorrow night I would guess we'll go with the TBA lists.
I have updated my drafting program to version 1.6. Version 1.5 included some new features and 1.6 was uploaded today with fixes for two minor bugs that popped up during last night's draft. Check the changelog included in the zip file for all of the changes.
I also uploaded an updated copy of my draft setup program. I inadvertently uploaded an incorrect copy previously that does not add the separator between the players and teams necessary for the draft runner to load the file.

Ed, what are your thoughts on this? I would believe a player that received a team that is not attending the regional would be cheated, and we should wait for the official team lists to come back up before drafts continue.
If it helps, here is the team list I copied before usfirst.org lists went down

Ok here's the deal: we got three more drafts to go but I got two league members blowing off the drafts. One is a first timer and the other has been doing this all season (not showing up for draft even though he's online or ducking in or out of the thread without making a pick and he's not getting a PM this time) but since it's so late should I even bother following through or should I let it slide because it's so late in the season?
Vikesrock

My opinion would be to let the first timer slide, and cut the chronic offender loose. The way I see it the randomizer is there to fill in the gaps because this league does involve a LOT of drafts and some people don't want to put in the time to make a list for every event (which is ok). If the randomizer is making a large portion of your picks, it's not really you playing, it's the randomizer.

If they have missed the last five than boot them. If you mean they have been attending 1 in 5 drafts through the last two months than tell the new player to stop it and kick the older one.
If an FRC team has a yellow card, and they get another, what happens? Red card.
Cut 'em loose if they don't pick tonight.
Honestly, if you just want random teams, say so. If not, then make a pick or send in a list (and BTW Ed, I hope you got the one I sent in last night for today). If you're only doing 1 in 6 (miss 5, respond to PM), and you aren't saying "random" every draft or two, just resign from the league.
The three people who's opinion I hold in the highest esteem in the league have spoken and if rocketperson44 does not participate tonight he is gone.

Anyone else on the chopping block?
Anyone else on the chopping block?
Not really.
But I will say what rocketperson44 does in the next 2 drafts will determine if I allow him to join up next season (as of right now I'm leaning heavily towards no).
And remember, there are two more drafts during the competition season.
MI State Championship: Draft is held a day or two before the event.
FRC Championship: During the break between regionals and the Championship.
I wouldn't let those slide, as there are some really good points to be had in the MI State event.
