As soon as 342 stops going to Florida is when 343 decides to attend:rolleyes: For years we had a great time in Florida, but in recent years it was starting to cost a little too much to travel down there:( . Good luck guys; I've always thought Florida regional had some of the best teams in FIRST!

Hey Florida Coaches, Drivers, Scouts and Strategists, most of you are probably aware of the seeding point rules that favor the losing teams. However many teams at their week 1 regionals found that most teams thought that just winning matches would rank them higher in seeding. There are strategies that work in all teams favor to take advantage of these rules during seeding matches where teams must score in the opponents goals to optimize their own alliances seeding scores. This is confusing and upsetting a lot of teams and I would like to preemptively nip any of that in the bud so there's no confrontations at the regional as to getting everyone to work together (either 6v0 or 3v3). Can we have a discussion about this and see where people stand on this issue? There's only a couple days left to work out whether we are going to:

a) use these rules to our advantage
b) agree to disagree and protest
c) see if we can come up with our own gentlemens agreement for some compromise that we can all live with
d) FIRST will make a change in the rules - which most people don't think will happen.
e) another idea?

Please don't shoot the messenger! I'm just trying to minimize the confusion and strife. I'm aware there are many strategies a team can employ that don't involve working in advance with the opponents but the fact that there are is why I'm posting this.

No shooting Dan... leaves me with the same taste in my mouth as the 2001 "Love Fest"

Warren and George have been looking at this all season. I'll let them do the talking...but suffice it to say that I prefer head-to-head competition and simple win-lose-draw seeding.

...case in point: Got a call, Saturday, from Gary Dillard who now mentors a Huntsville area team. He was at the Bayou Regional. The team next to them in the pit, did not get there 'bot past inspection until after the end of Qual rounds. They seeded 8th.

The prosecution rests...

On a more positive note: I am really looking forward to the field of teams coming to the Florida Regional. Drive 'em like ya stole 'em teams!

Dan - thank you for bringing this up.

Honestly I can go as far to say that the ranking system reminds me of exactly what happened back in 2003. That year in Florida, and along with the other Week 2 regionals, teams recognized that in order to move up in ranking, they had to work together.

That weekend, the UCF Regional set the national high score of 233 (coincidently).

It became apparent to the rest of the teams that in order to catch up, they too had to work together. This set the pace for the rest of the weeks of competition.

I honestly feel that we would be doing ourselves a dis-service by not taking advantage of the rules mainly since we will not be training our teams to be prepared for other regionals and perhaps even the championship event.

Unless FIRST explicitly changes the rules, I say to stick to them. And if the rules change it has to change during Week 2.

With that said, I'm well aware that in some matches it may not be advantageous to do a "6vs0" strategy. That is fine, it is part of the game. It is just difficult for others to accept this type of gameplay because of our upbringing through sports of 2 clear opposing forces and a well defined winner & loser.

Josh Drake

As this year's coach in Florida, I have been strugling with this. If you have a robot that can dominate and carry an alliance, would it be good to make sure you win, but shoot some for the other team too? Probably. The issue comes in when a Krunch and a Pink go against each other (for example). Each can do well and neither wants to loose those coopertition points by loosing.

I don't know the solution, but right now I'm of the mindset to win, but win close if you can control that. Does this mean to score for the other team? Does this mean you may not hang at the end because you lost the round by then?

I noticed some teams go through and do well (team 25 comes to mind). I don't know their strategy with the rules, but as far as I could see they just made sure they won, and hoped the system worked for them.

Strategy is difficult this year, and the teams that come up with something that works may not want to tell all of their opponents. At least eliminations are simple.

I do see the argument that defense during the qualification rounds doesn't benefit either team.

I for one am stoked about Florida. This regional has always been one of my favorites, and I'm sure this year will be no exception. From the pictures and videos floating around I think it's pretty clear we're going to see some of the best bots yet in the UCF arena this weekend.

I'm also excited about the opportunity to play with my old team, Metal-in-Motion. From what I've seen, you guys are looking solid!

As far as I'm aware, 386 has not yet decided how we'll handle the scoring situation. Personally (my opinion being my own and not at all the team's), I can see how people get upset about 6v0 and 3v0 situations purely for the 'feeling' of it. As of now, I'm more a fan of the 'neither team plays defense, but otherwise a normal competitive match' strategy. No matter how you slice it, it's always nicer to be in that top 8 on Saturday and perhaps using the scoring to your advantage is the best way to get there. No matter what, good communication within and among teams will be key. We'll see how things go, and my team as a whole will have the final say on how we play the game.

Josh Drake
08-03-2010, 12:59
I asked your dad if he wanted to coach so you two could be down there together. He declined.
A crazy year to strategize to say the least.

Warren Boudreau
08-03-2010, 13:40
As Eric has said, we've been thinking about this for a long time and George and I still don't completely agree on a philosophy.

In my opinion, if I am going into a match against three offensive machines (Krunch, Pink, and Swampthing spring to mind) and I have two BLTs and SPAM, I am going to try my best to convince my alliance mates that it is in our best interest to help the opposing alliance score as many points as possible while making sure that nothing goes into our goals. I would much rather lose 20-0 than 15-5. However, this would have to be a consensus agreement.

If an opposing alliance came to me with a reciprical request, we all score in my goals and nothing in their's, I would honor the gentleman's agreement and not try to score in their goals.

If it looks like it will be a close match, then I would prefer to play a tough match straight up.

Josh Drake
08-03-2010, 13:53
But those decisions would be made based on the perception of a team being able to dominate another team. That's a problem I have with rolling over, and not trying to upset the powerhouse. On Saturday morning those perceptions will be based on the Friday performance, and it may be an easier pill to swallow.

gorrilla
08-03-2010, 17:01
I'm stuck,

But I think the best bet is for everyone to try and score as many points as possible. No-one play defense, just try to out-score each other offensively and keep the scores as close as possible.

But I will most certainly not be scoring for the opposing alliance.
I (and don't bash me for this) would feel ashamed if my alliance needed the other alliance to score for us.

dodar
08-03-2010, 17:14
This is just my opinion, but if you look at all week 1 standings, the cream of the crop rose to the top at prolly 90% of the regionals because they were able to have competitive matches and yet still score alot.

I think in some situations during quals defense will be needed and some wont need it but most likely if you go out there and do what your team and your robot can do to the best of its and your abilities, the fruits of your labor will show.

I am not against cooperatition between alliances (6v0), but i would rather have a more competitive match, but thats just cause im really competitive lol :D

Nawaid Ladak
08-03-2010, 18:44
I believe that there should be NO Defense played during the qualification matches what so ever.

The goal of the game in qualifications is to score as many points as possible

IF a 6v0 match best serves my team and my alliance partners, I will present it to them. IF that means scoring for the opponent. Thats just a part of the game.

It's a part of the game, everyone plays by the same rules, so deal with it.

I'll be open to gentlemen agreements if anyone is interested.

cziggy343
08-03-2010, 19:43
I think that from my perspective, I want to win. That is just what is in me, and that is the way that I have been taught to drive in matches: drive it like you stole it, and get out with a win.

With that being said, after watching the peachtree regional, I have found that I think it is in the best interest of everyone that wants to have a clear winner (ie: a team that doesn't want to score for the other team) to have no defense in the quals. then, that still lets the best teams rise to the top without completly taking the credibility out of a competition atmosphere.

Gabe Salas Jr.
08-03-2010, 20:33
I (and don't bash me for this) would feel ashamed if my alliance needed the other alliance to score for us.

Please do not have that mentality if that sort of thing does happen. If an opposing alliance feels it is necessary to take the risk and score for your alliance, why stop them or get bent out of shape over it?

In the end, everyone is getting a higher ranking score.

If that's what they feel they need to do then I'm all for it, But I personaly feel like it would be degrading to the other team and selfish to boost your own QP's by scoring for them if they are unable to do it themselves.

Strategically, it's a good idea, but I just don't want to have to do it....

These are hard decisions.

Near-Tie scores always produce more points if the penalties can be contained.

Nobody has mentioned penalties in these conversations. These are the real QP killers.

I feel that it is more important that everyone should be playing the game to the rules' maximum potential. I believe that every team should give it their very best in conjunction to gracious professionalism.

Scoring for your opposing alliance isn't something new (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=118878). In fact, it has been encouraged before (2001 with "4vs0" gameplay, 2002 with balls in opponent's goal, 2003 with pre-match agreements to not go after alliance's multiplier stack, etc.).

Honestly, I wouldn't underestimate your opponents suggesting that they are feeble in their capability in scoring. Perhaps they are going for a strategy that isn't working as well as they wanted. Scoring for your opposing alliance is simply a suggestive option to consider.

Nobody has mentioned penalties in these conversations. These are the real QP killers.

That's part of the risk associated with scoring for the opposing team. This is something your scouting needs to keep in mind with teams you are paired up with and go against; that everyone is reliable & consistent enough to not produce penalties.

What we are all struggling with is the disparity between the game rules, and the tournament rules.

The game rules are very well written and offer up the possibility of a very exciting game that incorporates both the physical challenges and the mental challenges that we have all come to appreciate from the GDC.

The tournament rules, however, dilute the competitive aspects of the game rules and replaces them with something very different.

The challenge before each of us is to determine how much of a paradigm shift are we willing to adjust to.

When conventional groups are confronted with these types of paradigm shifts, the result, typically, is a polarization within the groups. Look to our current political environment as an example.

I offer up the hope that we of the FIRST community will be able to avoid this polarization and accept that others will be more, or less, willing to adjust to the changes the same way that we accept that they choose to drink diet soda instead of regular soda. It's a choice, and it is, after all, only a game.

yes... update #16 will help this debate a lot :D

Update 16 doesn't do anything but stop gentlemen agreements to play to a tie or 6v0. It doesn't stop hostile 6v0's. as i said in the update thread. if i was coaching and we had no chance to win, i would gladly play 6v0. it would STILL net my alliance the most possible points. Likewise, if i was in a sure win situation, I would start scoring for my opponent knowing every point i score for them is STILL two seeding points for me.

JohnFogarty
10-03-2010, 07:14
This is all very true, though our team's way of doing things conforms to the seeding system anyway. We keep the matches close because we know the ranking points could decide who is in the finals.

Though our driver is a nutcase he won't stop to kill the opposing alliance if he get's the chance he might even the score out a little who knows >.<

but, this update still helps. b/c there were some teams that did not want to concede immidiatly. this update can help those teams out a lot, b/c it gives an incentive to win.

I came away from update #16 with somethng like: "OK, the GDC wants us to keep it close, but duke it out for a win." I can live with that.

I offer the analogy of an industry consortium working together to fund upgrades to the technology base (high scores), then letting the individual companies fight it out for top sales of new products (the win).

Has Update 16 changed my position from yesterday?

Not much, really.

I like the rule change for robots not passing inspection. That should become the norm.

I like the change to the 3-inch incursion rule.

The extra 5 points for a win, is a little motivation to play to win. However, if it looks like a one-sided matchup, I will still consider 6v0.

One thing I think you will see, and this is just my personal opinion, is more defense in qualifying. By keeping the scores low and close, an upset is more likely and the incentive for the underdog is much greater now.

However, I still caution everyone that the chance of polarization is still very high. Please, be tolerant of others and do not begrudge them their opinions.

This is not official but according to Bill's Blog and most of the regionals so far they will attempt to play 10 matches. Being that Florida is smaller than some of the regionals that pulled off 10 this weekend, I think it will happen.

Nawaid Ladak
10-03-2010, 23:33
there should be exactly 90 Qualification Matches

54(Teams Attending) * 10(matches played) / 6(teams per match) = 90

EDIT: 53 teams, not 54... my bad, then there should be 89 QM's

53(Teams attending) * 10(matches played) / 6(teams per match) = 88.33333....

For all teams we were allied with during practice, we are sorry we left you guys hanging >.<

They pulled a rule out about how we mounted our bumpers and so it took all day to fix it.

Looking forward to tommorow, and if you haven't seen us look for the tank on the ballin light up cart.:D

Oh wow, we had a stressfull time getting inspected....

Does anyone know why the Crio is made for chassis grounding?
We spent about 5 hours looking for the short that was grounding to our frame, only to find that the Crio's case and mounting screws are very obviously exposed.....

945 is the first robot to complete inspection Thursday 11:10

We actually made it a goal to get that done this year.

More and more every year teams have started using Thursday as a "rebuild" day. Less teams are getting through inspection on Thursday than ever before in my seven years in FIRST. (There were only 8 teams past inspection by 2:15pm today, there are 20 teams that have yet to pass inspection). I wanted to make sure this team stood out and got this little thing done.

Im a big believer in momentum, i think success in little things (getting inspection done early) directly result in success on a bigger scale (more practice, better driver experience on the actual field, and the drivers ability to be comfortable during the matches that actually count).

Good luck to all the teams tomorrow, lets get all the robots out on the field and show that Florida is one of the best regional events FIRST has to offer.

My thoughts exactly. I've been unable to watch the webcast (*curses the school's web filter*) and I just saw in the 2010 Alliance Selection thread that 233 was not picked.

There are other teams that deserved to be in the elims, this year there are a lot more good teams then in past years in my eyes. But sometimes teams get over looked or just don't fit the needs of the alliances. I wish Pink the best of luck at LA

Congratulations to Ms. Beck for winning the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award! You are such an inspirational person who runs a great team!

Can someone who is there or watched all the matches please tell me how 233 did not get selected?

I didn't catch any of their matches today. However, in their last match yesterday, 233 scored 6 goals from the near zone, but had received 6 penalties because their device carried the ball each time they went up the ramp. Hopefully they'll be able to fix this before L.A., if they haven't already.

I apologize for not being informed/aware enough of any other Florida teams or others who happen to be attending the Florida Regional and are playing very well, I just know that from my experience in FIRST that Pink is typically very strong.

If anything this is an indication to me that the Florida Regional must be extremely competitive.

Good luck to everyone!

Can someone who is there or watched all the matches please tell me how 233 did not get selected?

They got alot of penalties so people passed on them.
Every time they tried to get the ball they got called for possession.
I think they ever missed an elims before this weekend.

Let me explain the possession penalties,

We started using our ball magnet to "strike" while our kicker wasn't working properly. The way our roller-with-bar setup works causes the ball to be lifted up off the ground about a quarter to half inch for a split second when we drive over the transition (where there is plywood under the carpet by the humps and tower), but always staying in contact with flat ground.

Other than penalties, our malfunctioning radio the last two matches didn't make us the most appealing candidate.

Sadly, right as alliance selections were beginning we were able to fix the radio (broken cable), fix our kicker's servo, and fix the hanging mechanism. We were a (nearly) fully functional robot hoping to luck out with selections, and come out guns blazing.

Instead, we will implement a solution to keep the ball on the floor when driving onto the small transition, and hopefully optimize our target tracking camera controlled variable range turret ball launching mechanism (sounds really advanced when you say it that way). We hope to be more competitive in LA, so see you there.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

And congratulations to the regional winners, it was a hectic event for us, but still a lot of fun.

What an Awesome Regional!

I wold have never known about the illnesses had I not read it here. The Regional went off flawlessly to the participants and spectators. Thank You Volunteers!

I find it simply amazing the number of matches played in the Finals. Has anyone ever seen so many ties and rubber matches before? It seems like 3-4 hard-fought matches were required for each advance. That was some great action!

Congratulations to all that attended and watched online. You are all winners for doing so.

I watched the finals on the webcast and found it very exciting even though I had no fovorite tocheer for. All 6 teams played hard and smart.

Team 86's robot was very impressive and fun to watch as it rolled and bounced around and was able to score and defend. Now I really want to go to Atlanta so I can watch it in person.

I hope everyone gets better from this illness soon.

as for my thanks

1345- It was an honor to be selected to be in a alliance with such a strong robot. you had shown us how powerful you were earlier that morning when beat us earlier that morning.

1649- Year after year you guys have put a strong robot on to the field here at the Florida Regional, and this year was no exception. It was great to play with you guys on our alliance.

180- Thank you for providing my team with some very valuable scouting information. It really helped in finding gaps in our scouting data. Somebody once told me the best way to learn about scouting is to work with a veteran team. Next year, I'll make sure some of our kids learn from one of the best teams that know what scouting is all about.

1902- Even though i wasn't there for the social, a lot of the kids on my team told me they had a blast at the event and enjoyed it very much, Thank you for hosting the social event. Maybe next year i'll be able to make it and find out what all the positive buzz was about.

1369- Thank you for lending us your programmer. Without him, we wouldn't have a autonomous mode.

86- Thank you for inspiring a countless number of people with your wonderful, elegant, robot design. It was nearly imposable to play defense on such a unique robot. not to mention the robot was a fan favorite and was one of the most entertaining robots to watch in this years game to this date.

Congrats to team 1902 for winning the chairman's award. I heard how much hard work was put into making the Chairman's Award video. and i can only wonder how much more hard work is put into the various events your team does from the FTC Kickoff to the social for this regional.

Congrats to teams 1251, 86, and 1612 for winning the Florida Regional. Our alliance learned first hand how hard it was to actually play at the level you guys played at, as well as how hard it was to defend all the offensive threats your alliance had.

The Volunteers who worked the field- You guys did an AMAZING job considering al the various issues with the Field Management System. While you guys worked hard to get the field moving, the game announcer's and emcee's along with various other volunteers worked hard to keep the crowd entertained. Nothing kills the buzz after a awesome match like a field issue. but the arena was electric all throughout the regional, weather the field was operating or not.

and last but not least, congrats to Ms. Beck of team 103 for winning Woodie Flowers Finalist Award.

I hope everyone had a blast here these past three days. and i hope to some of you later int he season, if not all of your next year at this same regional.

Congratulations to 1902 for Chairman's, 79 for Engineering Inspiration (and finals), and 1557 for all their awards. You guys obviously deserve them; you showed everyone what FIRST is about. The elimination matches were so exciting with all the ties!!! It's amazing how much penalties affected the outcomes! 1557, 801, and 79 put up a great fight against 86, 1612, and Tech Tigers (1251?) in the finals.

I think 1649 EMS's scholarship was a great idea.

It was also great to see 1270 again because their team spirit is amazing!

I also thought the 1557, 801, and 79 vs. the 179 alliance in quarters were just as intense as the final matches!!!

Best of luck to anyone moving on to Atlanta on other regionals!

Once again, the FIRST Florida Regional was an excellent demonstration of what great minds can do. There were so many excellent robot designs and strategies, it was absolutely thrilling to witness. And I should know: I was doing field reset all three days, so I had a very close view :D

Thank you to teams 86 and 1612 for picking 1251 to join your alliance; all three teams worked so perfectly well together and it definitely paid off. An additional kudos to 86 on their stunning robot - all the volunteers/judges/refs/everyone were going nuts when we saw it roll the first time on Thursday. You guys stole the show at that moment and definitely deserve the Excellence in Design Award. FYI: This is 1251 and 86's third time (in 4 years at that!) winning Florida Regional together. It's thrilling.

Congratulations to 1902 on a very, very much deserved Chairman's Award. You guys are an outstanding team and an example for all! This year's not even halfway over yet, but I'm already looking forward to next year's Florida Regional! :]

I had tons of fun this weekend!!! I had no idea that there were volunteers that were sick and missing. Everything ran so smoothly!
Thanks to 180 and 1902 for being awesome partners!! And congrats to 1902 for winning the Chairman's!!! Congrats to 86, 1251, and 1612 for winning!!

I also like seeing teams that have awesome attitudes even when they don't get picked for eliminations. There were lots, but I really noticed 233...they do sort of stand out! We had the pleasure of being next to them all weekend in the pits and I ended up sitting right behind them after we were eliminated. They were fun to watch and extremely polite. They were always very gracious in congratulating all the winners! But they did sort of scare my 7 year old son! He refused to have his picture taken with one of you guys!! I look forward to seeing you guys in Atlanta!! Maybe I can get Joshua to pose for a picture then!

Oh wow, definitely the most fun Florida regional I have ever attended.

(Even though I'm putting this first, this is the last thing I felt I just had to add): Thanks to EVERYBODY that came by to compliment our robot or cheered us on when we rolled over a bump and the judges for awarding us the Engineering Excellence Award (sponsored by Delphi xD) for our robot's roll carriage. It just made our entire team SO HAPPY (you know that warm fuzzy feeling inside?) that people liked our robot and its design so much. Honestly, you guys can't even imagine how awesome you made us feel and we are SO glad that people enjoyed watching our robot run.

NOW: Thanks to all the volunteers, judges, mentors, parents, ANY adult involved with FIRST. You guys make it all possible and nobody can thank you enough.

Congrats to Team 1902 Exploding Bacon on their Chairman's award!

Thanks to teams 1612 and 1251 for being AMAZING alliance partners, you were awesome guys.
1612: Oh my goodness! I found a button from last year from you guys with my picture on it. Too cool!
1251: I absolutely loved working with you guys again. In my freshmen year (Overdrive), our robot's claw broke and you guys and 233 gave us the privilege of working with you two to winning the Florida regional then. I knew that you guys could play stellar defense and had a good amount of ball control (the fact you guys could hang was unknown but a pleasant bonus xD) so it was an honor to be able to choose you guys and work and win with you again.

Thanks for rolling with us guys!

Some other shout-outs:

Team 79: You guys had some trouble with comm issues and your lift breaking (which was really unfortunate!), but WOW when you guys were working you were WORKING. Amazing ball control and in one of the elimination matches I saw you guys start your lifting mechanism at (I think) 7 seconds left and make it up to the top before the match ended. WOW

Team 103: When we played together in a qualifying match, you guys were AWESOME. One of the most fun matches I was at all day! You guys were skying balls across the field (and sometimes over the driver station!), so epic! Even after that, you all appeared to have gotten the power needed to kick the balls down to what it needed to be and were scoring from everywhere on the field, great job.

Team 118: AMAZING DEFENSE. Wow if you guys weren't the most annoying bot (in a good way!) to play. Had to get both us and 1612 to even have a chance of scoring on you guys!

Team 179: First off, congrats on the #1 seed as well as the co-opertition award! You guys excelled in all aspects of the game, from scoring any place on the field to hanging at the end. Way to go guys!

Team 945: Just love your team in general, you guys were SO NICE! One of the best midfield bots I saw AND an impressive hanging device!

Team 1065: I did not talk with your team a whole lot during the competition, but you were definitely one of the top short range bots.

Team 1592: I LOVED YOUR AUTONOMOUS. Seeing you pound in 3 points from the far side of the field was SWEETTTT.

Team 2383: NINJINEERS, YOU GUYS WERE SO COOL! Epic team name AND I got to hug a ninja, YES!

There are a TON of teams I didn't talk about that were no less amazing than any team I listed. Just thanks to every team that was there for making this Florida Regional the best EVER (in my opinion xD)

Sorry for huge amount of text and look out for us green people in Atlanta (FREE HUGS AT THE PARTY SATURDAY NIGHT!)

This will be one of my most memorable regionals, Florida really knows how compete, have fun and be patient when things don't go as planned. I'm excited for the years to come. Congrats to the many decorated teams this weekend, there were a lot of deserving teams it must have been a nightmare for the judges.

This was also one of the most intensely competitive regionals I've seen to date, I can't remember so many ties! I'm looking forward to see how the teams that competed at Florida fair on the world stage, at Atlanta and other regionals. Last time the regional was this competitive we put 5 robots on Einstien ( 07 ).

I'm also looking forward to hanging out with the Krunchers in NC. Who knows, maybe we'll have a delicious breakfast combo for an alliance.

Florida FIRST Rocks, that's for sure.

Team 1612 would like to thank team 86 for picking us in your alliance along with team 1251. You guys were amazing. This is our first year winning the Florida regional (well, any regional :P), and we're proud to have done it with you guys. :D See you guys in Atlanta!
Congrats to all other teams, competition was fun, yet challenging. There were some very interesting designs and strategies out there. Everyone did amazing! So thank you everyone, including volunteers.

Grats to team 1902 for winning the Chairman's award!

Can someone who is there or watched all the matches please tell me how 233 did not get selected?
We were "dead in the water" our last two matches Saturday because of a damaged power wire to the radio. That is the main reason we weren't picked, along with our having problems with "ball off the ground" penalties.
