I noticed while attempting to search for a two digit team number, CD tells me to search again. It seems like the smallest search possible is 3 characters. Any way around this?

Enter 00 before the two digit number.

Just look at Akash's team number. That proves that it will work.

Enter 00 before the two digit number.
That works while searching the memberlist. However, when using the main search function, searching with two numbers tells you to search again. Searching for, say, team 27, with 0027 only gives you 4 threads (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/search.php?searchid=2461135), which isn't helpful to me if I were trying to find information on their drivetrain.

I want to search posts. If I search '78' it comes back 'Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.'

Use google.

site:www.chiefdelphi.com 78

Ah, gotcha. I interpreted as searching for someone using team number.

Even though it doesn't show the error message, it may be due to the fact that the software won't allow you to search anything less than the set number of characters configured by the admin. There's a good reason for this, too. If he allows 2-character searches, the web server would take a nice little hit, possibly bringing it to his knees, just from the re-indexing alone.

Your best bet is to use this in the Google search box:

TERM site:chiefdelphi.com

Where "TERM" is what you're searching for (in this case, the 2-digit team number).
