Hello all,
On behalf of Team 399, I would like to announce that we will be hosting our 4th Annual RoboProm this year at the National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. Since its inception, the attendance to the event has doubled every year. Last year close to 500 people attended. This year, we're hoping to get approximately 1000 people to come and enjoy the fun.
We're wondering about prices. Last year we did $16 at the door and $12 pre-sale. Because the room needs to be twice as large (and we'll probably need twice as much punch), we've raised the prices slightly for $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door. Let us know if this is acceptable, although a real prom is close to $120 (depending on the school) and this prom is 1000000 x pi more fun!
Good luck with the rest of the build season!

Man i really wanted to go to the roboprom 2 years ago when 1388 (The other eagle robotics) was in Atlanta, but we were too far away to get there. Hope to see you there this year though!
I'll be there. Last year it was so legit. I'm coming up from Hunstville that weekend to see the championship no matter what, so i mine as well go to robot prom. Good luck. 399

People seriously pay more than like $20 for a prom? Like, really?
Anyway, Roboprom was a ton of fun the last two years I went. I guess I'm a (17 year old) college student now, and the new 1000 - person size is a bit intimidating, but I recommend it to anyone. Especially if you don't normally go to school dances or whatever.

I know if my team is attending championship, their going to have to miss their school prom. This shooed do pretty well.
I know i'll be attending, even as a mentor. This event is seriously fun and a good way to relax on a Thursday night.
Also, I call dibs on wearing a hat that looks like a tower

I had my one and only chance going to the roboprom last year, but ditched the idea at the last moment when I realized that I'd have to be totally focused with the competition the following day. Because our team, which came all the way from winning first place in the Israel regional, was quite small, and I had to fill in about 2-3 roles at the same time during the whole competition. I'm really sorry I didn't go to the prom, but I didn't really have any say about it anway, because the whole team had to be together all the time. :(
1923 went to RoboProm last year, and it was amazing. I'd recommend it to anyone. I hope 1923 goes again, and if 229 goes I'll try to see if the kids can/want to go. It's so much fun! If either team goes, I'm totally going as a mentor chaperone!
My team hasn't been to Atlanta for several years, so I've never had the opportunity to go, but I've heard that it's loads of fun! If the tables turn and 1189 makes it down there this year, I'll definitely find some way to attend. With a really awesome dress (right, Libby? [: ).

We have fun as mentors too while we are there. There is something for everyone while you are at the event. Usually, most of the older mentors are outside discussing the game or getting to meet other mentors from other teams. Some can also be found inside the area dancing too :P
We do our best to make it a safe and enjoyable environment for all and the hotel staff usually do a great job in assisting with the effort. We may be doing it at the Omni again this year, but we are looking around just in case we find something else a little cheaper. Our team will let you know when we finalize the project.

There is no way I'm going because last year's DJ was horrible.
For Nawaid Ladak, the Disc Jockey was horrible due to the fact that he played songs that should not have been played, he did not mix one song into another, he just immediately crossfaded into another song, and last but not least, his music archive was pratically 1 gb.

I thought the 2008 DJ was much better myself. I asked last year's if he had Daft Punk and he said "no, man, mostly Top 40 stuff, sorry." Then they played One More Time. :/
The crossfading could have been handled better too, but it wasn't really a deal breaker for me. The lack of variety and mediocre time I was having with my friends made me enjoy it less than 2008. Though the guys from Aces High were cool!

These are the type of responses that can help make the event better. I do agree taht 2008's DJ was better; but hopefully 2010's DJ will be the best

I don't know what 816's current Championship Situation is, but I know for one I'll try to go to the Robo-Prom if I'm there.
I was supposed to go last year and got sidetracked with some other team functions... (Read as, got too involved in the competition to remember how to have fun... :P)
If we end up in Atlanta this year I and a few friends may come :D

Half the reason I want to get to Atlanta again this year is to attend this! My team didn't know about it until afterward, and we were really disappointed.
So if 1334 qualifies this year, you'll see me and a few other Red Devils there for sure!

Hey everyone, I don't believe Team 20 has ever attended roboprom, but I talked to our head mentor and she was onboard with allowing people to go this year. =D
Quick question, do more people dress up in typical dance clothes (cocktail dresses/nice shirt and slacks) or do more wear funky FIRST inspired costumes?

I've seen a pretty wide variety from dresses and shirts to trackballs and orbit balls to just team uniforms. It's much less serious in my mind than any real prom (A very good thing!), just a good time.

Hey Kristen, last year most people wore like typical dance clothes but as expected there were some FIRST costumes around. You guys should definitely show up :P
On another note...It sounds like you're expecting to pull in about $12,000, maybe you should get an AWESOME DJ this year, last year's DJ wasn't that good.
expect the guys from 78 to show up

Yeah... after riding in a bus for 19 hours, I really don't want to wear a dress and heels while everyone else is just wearing jeans haha.
The attire for the prom is usually semi-formal. Girls wear dresses and the boys wear black pants and collared shirts.
It certainly isn't as formal as normal prom, but people really don't tend to wear jeans.
But there is NO dress code so feel free to come in a home-made tape dress or a soccer-ball suit :)

I've seen it worn dozens of times. I think you're good.
I'll probably just wear khakis and maybe a button shirt. Not too different from what I normally wear, and it fits in a suitcase alright. If I go, which is dependent on a few factors.
Lindsay399
10-02-2010, 19:26
Really any attire goes.
I know that the other 3 girls and I setting this up will be in dresses :] and this is our prom since our school's prom is that Saturday, but the goal is just for everyone to get together and have a good time so as long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing and your attire is appropriate then everything will be good.
I hope to see everyone there and we will do our best to make this the best roboprom since we started this shindig 4 years.
Lindsay399, your commentary is not needed so get out of this thread, and get of CD! :P miss you.
and, really? Your prom is on saturday this year? That sucks. You should get someone to be on prom committee every year so this doesn't happen again.

So what actually happens at roboprom?
Just a slow dancing talk about robots meeting center, like a convention for robot goers?
Also, sounds like a cool idea! wish i could go!

Think basically a prom. You can talk bots too, which you could never do at a real prom. There are never enough slow songs...
You can talk bots too, which you could never do at a real prom.
Speak for yourself. I will make sure that my prom date for next year is willing to talk about robots, because quite frankly, I'm not a dance person, and would much rather sit at a table and talk about bots :P

At roboprom people dance and mingle. There are also tables set up for the non-dancing type. :)
We announce a king and queen of the prom too, depending on originality in costume, dance, etc. People who stand out basically.
We could possibly do some other activities too, like limbo? If you have any suggestions, please share. :)

However, we need to make proper reservations for buses NOW.

Hey guys. Sorry about all the inconveniences about the when and where roboprom is. We are working on finding a venue in our budget but still easy for everyone to get to, and it will most likely be on Thursday night but again we have not finalized anything, but we should know in the next week and i will let you all know as soon as it is decided.

As Lindsay has mentioned, we have been working hard on getting a place for the event. Unfortunately the Omni was booked up by the start of the build season and we have been looking to negotiate prices with other locations. However, we should hear something this week from the venues that we have contacted. I can tell you that we are making an attempt to keep RoboProm fairly close to the Georgia Dome (i.e. no more than a mile away).
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact either through a PM to me, Lindsay or email: team399@gmail.com

Hey everyone,
We finally have all the details worked out for RoboProm this year!
It will be held at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in a room called The Freight Room on Thursday, April 15th. The is only a two-minute walk from the Marta station. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 presale, $20 at the door. Punch and water will definitely be served and we're in the process of checking out cookies.
If you're interested in having the time of your life, you can drop by our pit on Thursday and pay in order to get the presale price. We are accepting cash and checks (please make your checks payable to Lancaster High School).
Although we are not strictly enforcing a dress code, we ask teams to wear appropriate clothing to the event. Dresses, suits, jeans, team shirts, giant lion costumes, and soccer ball outfits are all examples of acceptable attire. Basically, we understand that many teams won't know to bring formal clothing, so don't sweat what you're wearing. We'll even pick a king and queen chosen purely by random, good impressions that you make on our team members.
This is the fourth year we are hosting this event and we're extremely excited for the turnout. Spread the word to other teams going to Atlanta too! We want everyone to partake in the fun!
Love your future dancing partners,
Team 399

I went last year as a sophomore and had a blast. Many of my friends were freshmen at the time and loved it. They really do make all grades included.

True that. I didn't feel out of place at all as a freshman last year. Even some of the mentors like to get jiggy with it at roboprom... :yikes:

High schoolers of all ages go.
It's like all of the good of real proms, without the stupid >$30 tickets, months of preparation, drama, weird age restrictions, or any of that dumb stuff.

$30? Try more like 80  I don't get why they make proms so expensive

Dustin,
I just verified with the advisor of our team and we will have that available. We will probably have a team of students go around and promote this in the pit area. Last year my wife was accepting ticket purchases and I am pretty sure she will be doing so again :P
I'd love for 1676 to be able to go, but I've got no promises of a dress. ;)
You can always just wear a black skirt with your team shirt (your team shirts are black, right?) and call it done :P
(note: No Atlanta for me this year, so no Roboprom ]: Hopefully I'll be able to join you next year!)
It is official! The FeMaidens will be going to the Robo Prom! =]
We are all really looking forward to it! :D

Okay, so I know there's no dress code (and I'm sorry if this has been brought up already, but this thread is rather long and I'd rather not read the whole thing...again) but I've got two dresses and one I'd really love to wear...but it's Really formal. And I'm okay with that, but it might be a little weird if I'm the only one in this formal formal dress and most people aren't dressed up. So is there a limit on formalness of attire and are people going to be really dressing up?

I went last year. It really varied: from pit garb to nice dresses to prom-ly dresses. I can't recall any floor-length ball gowns though, if thats what you have planned. There were more prom-y dresses though (my friend wore the same floor-length dress she wore to prom).

Plenty of people wear stuff on all levels of formality, you'll be fine no matter what you show up in.

We say semi-formal but it's really whatever is easiest for you.
Also we will be selling presale tickets in our pit on Thursday for $15 and we are in Newton Division. If you don't get a chance to come to our pit before we leave we will be selling tickets at the door for $20.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there and if you could email or team at Team399@gmail.com to let us know how many you think will attend from your team that would be fabulous.
Thank You,

From In The Mix USA (Your DJ) for Robo Prom 2010
I want to allow anyone attending this years Robo Prom 2010 the ability to request your favorite song before the event starts. Remember that a request does not guarantee that it will be played. Make sure the songs you are requesting are dancable songs. Obscure songs will not be played. Songs with profanity will not be played. If I have the clean version I will play it. We will mix this year.
Email all requests to: rewhite@inthemixusa.com
Submit your name, team number, team name, artist and song title.
SEE YOU AT THE PROM IN A FEW DAYS!

Is profanity defined "FCC Style" (seven dirty words), or does it include other things?
I'll send some requests soon! I wonder if there is any clean Chiddy Bang...

Hi Everyone!
Team 1073 would love to attend RoboProm 2010! Where can we get more information (we'd need the times, where it is, etc. and how to pre-order)? Also, if some people wanted to wear their actual prom attire from previous years, would that be out of the ordinary? What is the expected dress code, even though there really is none.
Thanks so much! Somebody please get back to me ASAP seeing that Atlanta is this week! My e-mail is genevieveb12@gmail.com!!!

Actually, sorry for the redundancy! I totally spaced over the multiple pages of posts/replies so my questions are mostly answered! Just to confirm though, we simply shoot over an e-mail to you (Team 399) with an estimate on the number of people and then pay $15 per person in your pit area at Atlanta? (We're in Newton as well, so it should be easy!)???
Thanks!!!!

Yes that is all you have to do. We will have representatives walking around letting everyone know about RoboProm too. Just make sure to purchase your tickets at our pit so that you get the tickets for $15, other wise it is $20 at the door.

See you there as I have a few I need to chaperone.
The rest will be prepping for CA interviews and no drive team members allowed to stay out late.

I believe it ends at 11pm.
If you're in a downtown hotel you should have no issue being back by 11:30 or so.

You guys should definitely be careful walking back. Make sure you have some adults with you. It gets a little sketchy at night.
I saw that 2265 is going so, all we need is 694 and we can have a NYC Regional reunion! :)
see you there!

Hey everyone,
I've been answering all the emails for RoboProm and there are a few common questions I thought I'd post on here.
Q: Are chaperons free?
A: We are trying to keep all of our rules/requirements the same as last year so yes, chaperons are free. However, this is meant to be helpful for those parents/mentors/advisors that are there to chaperon (not that we don't expect them to dance, because we certainly do!), not a discount for non-team members.
Q: How long does the event last?
A: Doors open at 7pm and close at 11pm. We are assuming that most teams will have groups large enough to walk back to their hotel at 11. If not, please make sure you have some sort of chaperon or get together with another team to walk to the Marta.
Q: At what time exactly does the price increase to $20?
A: The price is $15 all day Thursday and will only increase to $20 if you are purchasing tickets at the event.
Q: "We will be traveling from the Marriot Marquis. Do you have Marta information it looks like we go south towards Underground Atlanta, do you know the name of the stop?" (This was a specific question from a mentor and I'm sure other teams are staying here.)
A: Yes, you can take the Marta from the Georgia Dome or from most hotels (Marriot is definitely one of those). Take the Marta from the Peachtree Center station to the Five Points Station.
By the way, thus far, 32 teams have sent us an RSVP. How cool! If your email hasn't been answered for some reason, send another with RoboProm in the subject line. They tend to disappear...
Hope this helps!

I have some good news and some bad news.
First the bad news...
I will not be making an amazing roboprom dress out of field matierials. This is because I will not be attending robo prom this year. In fact, I will not be in Atlanta this year.
Now the good news...
I was awarded with the honor of being the Delaware New Century Scholar. The award ceremony takes place during championships in Seattle, Washington. Thus is why I am not attending roboprom nor championships.
Have fun everyone and good luck to all the teams going!

roboprom was the best thing in atlanta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and i had great time so thanx !!!:D
The kids on Team 341 had a great time. Thanks again to the students and mentors of Team 399 for putting this together.
It is very important to have fun activities like the Robo-Prom when you travel. Not only is it something fun to do, but it actually helps with recruiting and retention. The kids come back to school from the Championship telling their friends, just how much fun they had at robotics.
Nice event! Good times!

I was only there for about 15 minutes this year, so I can't honestly evaluate the event, but having to walk so close to a Tea Party was not one of my favorite things to do. Hopefully next year the Omni won't fill up right away so that these long walks can be avoided.
