im guessing its going to be used to pull your robot up the tower by folding it

On the right track...
Note: as pictured it's not robot ready, it's missing various pulleys and spacers and whatnot.

awww...that was going to be my guess

or it could be used to right the robot if it turns over? I'm pretty sure it's to lift it though.

I think it is one of 8 legs for the robot. During normal configuration, it shuffle walks carefully with each leg bent up inside the BUMPER PERIMETER. During finale, it stretches the legs and gallops up the bump onto the tower. As an added bonus, the bot can now shoot in 8 directions.
I think it is a workbench or table, used to intervene between an object and the gravitational pull of the earth below it. This one seems to be decorated with some sort of robot device and a collection of sockets.

This is a three stage extending arm, right Chris? You're going to use it to lift some sort of hook up to the tower, then winch the rope in to lift the robot. The arm doesn't have to provide the lifting force, so it doesn't have to be very strong.
Did I get it?

Yup. :D
A prototype is being built to actuate it from folded into the bumper area to fully extended with one pneumatic cylinder. Hook velcroed to the top for secure hold yet easy removal.

Nice! This was an idea my team discussed a lot. One piston is going to actuate that whole thing? How does that work? I like how it's a really simple system, though.

Thanks! I'll try! :D
Yay for winches, I believe we're doing something similar on our bot this year.

At this rate, you're going to owe a lot of people cookies.

One of the adult mentors had this thing that when he explained it to me, made perfect sense, that I can't very well repeat right now. It's easier to do talking with hands... I guess you'll have to wait until we get it working :) Something about the placement of the pivot point pulling the string and something like that.
At this rate, you're going to owe a lot of people cookies.
I plan on bringing a whole box of cookies (leaving it just outside the pits of course) and making runs to it throughout the event.

I would bet that the final design looks something like this (on a smaller scale of course):

Pretty much exactly that. When all's said and done it may only have 2 or 2.5 stages. Very light and simple is what was desired, and a folding option to keep the tunnel as a possibility and to lower CoG during normal operation.
...I guess I'm defeating the point of a teaser if I tell you guys what it is. :)

What's your winch looking like so far Chris? Which motors and gearbox.

5th CIM, gearbox is currently TBD, unless someone else figured it out and didn't tell me yet.

To me it reminds me of an arm scissor lift. so exactly like the trucks. I like the design really hope it works out. what are you planning on having actually latch onto the tower?
I think that you arn't going to use that part at all and you'll pound it into forks to eat meat loaf with.
... looks like what we are thinking about... would like to see it work
