View Full Version : Motors allowed on the robot.
Does any motor except servoes and the motors from the KOP allowed on the robot?
My basic question is if i can use a motor from FTC (http://parts.ftcrobots.com/store/detail.aspx?CategoryID=161&by=9&pt=22&ID=6322&c=1&t=2&l=0) on the robot.
will appreciate the help.

Nope, motors outside of the kit are not allowed.
Kit only is what i've been hearing.
I know that someone already said it, but hearing it again doesn't hurt :P
<R52> and <R53> are the applicable rules.<R53> explicitly states that no motors are allowed save what <R52> allows. The allowed ones? Anything in the KOP, up to 3 additional CIM motors (total of 5), unlimited COTS servos of a certain spec, and unlimited FTC servos, plus 1:1 spares for any of the above.
So, no FTC motors.

We were talking about this last night, and came to the same conclusion! :cool:
you could just use a ton of servos and/or creative gearing to make the servos drive more than 180
Or open them up and remove the potentiometer. I don't know if that would be legal, but it is possible. That would make it always think its centered, so always try to move to one side or the other forever (after removing physical stops). They make good motors for really small things, and vEx motors are basically servos w/o pots.
well.... are they ever gonna check if you removed the potentiometer, they don't have time to disassemble every last servo

Its not the pot that prevents the rotation, one of the gears has a mechanical stop to prevent damaging the pot.

<R54> So that the maximum power level of every ROBOT is the same, motors and servos used on the ROBOT shall not be modified in any way , except as follows:
A. The mounting brackets and/or output shaft/interface of the motors may be modified to facilitate the physical connection of the motor to the ROBOT and actuated part.
B. The gearboxes for the Fisher-Price motors are not considered “integral” and may be separated from the motors.
C. The electrical input leads on the motors may be trimmed to length as necessary.

When you make statements like that, inspectors might remember what you said. BTW, I can tell when a servo has been opened. It's a gift.

No this rule has been in place for years. Are you sure you just didn't use the transmissions from the old drills? This is common.

Drill motors have not been allowed since 2005.

You seem to have a problem with understanding that getting away with something is just as illegal and wrong as getting caught doing it.
You might want to rethink your response to rules infractions.
Al's response regarding being able to see if a servo has been opened is good but there is nothing wrong with taking a servo apart...perhaps to rebuild it... we have done that a number of times.
What is wrong is modifiying it outside the rules... and even if an inspector doesn't catch it.. it is still wrong....
