Exactly. Why do you think we have pit areas? ;) I rarely see a team that is ever done with their robot, even during competition.

I agree with that. lol
Some things that have been said in the past on this topic (most of which are already spotlighted):
"Finish. What an interesting concept. I'm still hoping to do that to our 2003 robot." --a member of 222 in 2005
"I know what finished is, and I know what a robot is, but what is this finished robot of which you speak?"--a member of a different team
"Your robot isn't done until after the last day of the Championships." "No, it's not done until after your last offseason." --exchange from a year or two ago.
Anybody says they're finished, they still got work to do. It's probably just in software.

wheres the 4th option? what about the teams who arent even half way finished because of snowmaggedon? (we only have a chassis, wheels and transmissions mounted. no electronics or mechanisms of any kind...yet)

We don't finish until we're eliminated at the Championship. If you claim to be finished any sooner we're not playing the same game.

Come to IRI sometime and you can be finished about 3 months later.

Oh snowmageddon. How I love you so. We've been lucky enough to have a mentor willing to give up his garage for work, so we're not too behind. But it's still been a pain moving the robot and everything back and forth. Haven't seen this much snow in VA ever. It's crazy.

We have (2007) and I also went in 2006. It's too expensive for us to get there too do it regularly. We also have not done an offseason since our last appearance at IRI because of scheduluing conflicts:(

I don't think the question should be are you finished? Something like have you come to a point were you are satisfied with your robot until you see it in competition?
Lol but agreed with all above posters if u finish before the season is over your giving up waaay to soon.
I don't really consider any of 1075's robot's 'finished', (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2008offseason, 2009, 2010, 2010practice or our 2008-2010 Cart). However, some of them have been completely or partially dismantled, mostly because we needed parts off of them:
2003 exists, minus all electronics and some pneumatics
2004 exists minus electronics
2006 is completely dismantled and some of its frame lives on in more recent bots
2007 is mostly functional, but is missing drive units (2006 offseason, 2007, 2008, and 2008 offseason all had interchangeable drive units)
2008 is completely dismantled, some frame bits live on in more recent bots
2008offseason is fully functional
2009 was fully functional until last week (its cRIO and modules were stolen to put on 2010practice)
2010 is still under construction
2010practice is mostly complete.
and our 2008-2010 Cart is fully functional.

I'll bite and assume for the OP's sake that by finished he means that all of the initial functions of the robot work, it's built and programmed, and teams are tweaking their robots rather than building their first iteration.
2791 was aiming for that by about now. Our chassis is in a million pieces, so... we're a bit behind. I can say the 09 robot has been finished since Ramp Riot, though, as almost every single part on it has been cannibalized. I'm actually impressed with how much of it HAS been reused.
ETA: IRI 2010. We'll be done then.

Well thanks to the snow all we have a chassis with some wheels. Our pneumatics came in, and we havent been able to do anything yet because we havent been able to go anywhere. So we are basically screwed for the competition. This is only our second year, so we are still learning about how fast that deadline comes up haha. baring any type of miracle we aren't gonna be ready.
"Finished Teams"??? :ahh:
That's an absurd ideal. :yikes:

#1 I hope we finish in time.
#2 I hope its to our satisfaction.
So far, we are not even close to reaching #1 and #2 yet.

Our competition bot is farther along than our practice bot. Hopefully the snow doesn't make us take off another day from our machines at school tomorrow.

Wait, robot? We've been working on building a team.
The website and communication teams have been working hard and shown much success.
Our CA essay is going through some final edits.
The video is mostly shot and editing has begun.
Our WFA nominee has been decided and the essay is a good way along.
The Business plan has been updated.
Our robot is behind schedule and needs plenty of work to be functional.

Well based on your team's track record, I believe you based on the success you folks have year after year.:ahh:

When my team went down to the Florida riegional last year, the team in the pit next to us started out with a bunch of flow-jet pieces and bolts and motors on practice day, and had a fully functioning robot halfway through the qualifying day lol
it was interresting to watch it come together the way it did.

Finished.. I was replacing parts on our 2008 robot a few weeks ago... No Robot is ever finished 100%... Is it to the point were it does just about everything you wanted.. Mostly likely...

Nobodys ever really finished with their robot ;)
that is so true... in 2007 we didn't finish our robot until our second competition, but i know of a few teams including us that are close to coming to a ship worthy robot

 I do agree that some people are not finished with building their robot a little before practice time because my team had several welds break when we got our robot out of the crate.

Our 2008 robot was finished... after the first day of our second competition.
Then our summer session came around and we decided to do "improvements", for the sake of learning and experimenting.
Other than that... we've gotten to points where we were satisfied with the other robots, but never finished.
This year? The drive motors have been attached for a while and the wheels were finished last night (so we should have the drive train completed tomorrow). One mechanism is complete and attached. A second mechanism is almost done (just needs a little tweaking), and the other two mechanisms are in progress. Electronics aren't mounted on the robot yet, but the individual boards are done, wire lengths measured, cut and soldered, for the most part. Electronics go on tomorrow afternoon, if all goes well.

Last year, our machine was "Ready To Ship" in the middle of week 4.
In 2008 our machine was "Ready To Ship" At the end of week 5.
This year, our machine might be "Ready To Ship" on Ship Day. Snow, Lack Of Commitment, Shipping Delays, Lack Of Man Power, and other things are working against us this year...

Last year we put a finished robot in the crate. We did modify it at our first regional, but that was after some practice/qualifying rounds revealed that we should change tactics.
This year we're a bit behind, but we should have it finished by ship day. We have driving, kicking, and ball handling stuff working, but still need to design and build the upper part and outer coverings. And work on programming and testing and driver practice.

Lack of commitment is a biggie. A team can always find a way to deal with the challenges that come its way. That said, dealing with lack of commitment on the part of team members can make for a difficult build and competition season.
Hang in there,
Jane
While many (most??) years we tend to ship a student in the crate (thank GOD that GSR is a week 1 event! :p ), I think we're in very good shape to actually get some solid practicing in. A good crop of motivated and/or talented freshmen meant that the Mech shop was a beehive of activity most nights ... the way we always dreamed it could be.
Now, can we keep the enthusiasm up for another 10 days ... ?

WE ARE FINISHED!!!! With 2005,2006 and 2007.....the kids disassembled them and put the material back on the shelf. They are truly finished!!!:D

We had a mostly finished robot until about 5 weeks ago; we had to disassemble our 2009 bot, frame and all, for use in our 2010 chassis. By my estimation, around 50% of our 2010 chassis is made up of parts taken from the 2009 robot.
Most of our subsystems are in a state of semi-completion. We finally finished our chassis last week. The swerve modules and steering motor sprocket supports are done and mounted. Our kicker works in prototype form; the pull-back mechanism is in mid-assembly as I type this. Our ball controller just needs to have its motor mounted on the frame. And our robot lifting device is...uh...coming along.
We'll have a working robot by ship date, if all goes well. It won't be finished for a few years, providing that it lasts through future competitions.

Snowmageddon! What a perfect way to describe this whitish third circle of h***. We were ahead a bit in week three then 4 feet of snow or so later we are still locked out of our school.
Uggghhhhhh!
Well, as of today, our robot drives, kicks and everything else it's supposed to do. but there is room for improvement so I'm not calling it finished.

Haha. Done. Wait, do you mean you actually have to have your chassis *assembled* to be done? It can't just be lying on the shop floor in oh-so-many pretty pieces?
...Yeah. We might be behind. We're going to put in so many hours this week it'snotevenfunny.

We seem to be stuck between "almost finished" and "finished"
The only thing left to do is:
Add permanent grip to our ball magnet,
Load the full competition code,
Add a Lexan "roof" to keep balls off the top.
Other than that, only cosmetic details(lexan siding, sponsor-stickers,etc)
And the robot is going to be underweight this year :D

Is the tension building in a KOP part or is it in COTS?
