hey guys... i was just wondering what all the teams out there are naming their robots, and how you came up with that name...
Team Paragon's 2010 robot is name is Scurvy... our first name was Capn' Hook because of the hanging arm and winch had a hook, and since our chassis looks like a boat we tried to go with a pirate theme... so we had to scrap the hanging part of our strategy because we were 8 pounds overweight and dropping the hanging mechanism killed 13 pounds off the robot... so we sat down and brainstormed some new name ideas (trying to stay with the pirate and boat theme). so we came up with the name Scurvy...

Our team got blasted by the snowstorm here in VA, and we lost near a week of time... we decided to honor nature with a little help from the daily show and we now call our bot "Snowtorious B.I.G." :)

'09: Luna Beast
'08: Ballfrog
'07: Tube-a-saurus

We try and decorate it to resemble some animal each year. We are also using a hammer :)

I don't know if the name Hank has been approved yet by the team, but that's what we call him on these late build nights

Our team is sticking with the Wizard of Oz theme. Last year it was the Tinman. This year its The Wizard.

Well our FTC bot is named International Harvester, after the song International Harvester by Craig Morgan. It's a country song and somehow we ended up listening to it and they say our team name (Rhode Rage) in the song. Needless to say it stuck.

Nothing like hearing the announcer of the match call your robot International Harvester :p

We normally name our robots random things. The past 2 years have been Sasha and Ralph. I think Charles is this year's bot.

Team 2502's name for our robot this year is "Simba" and I have no clue why. The marketing team started to use it and we thought it was very decent.

We have been using the name of the MVF (Most valuable freshman) for the robots name.

We're unoriginal with our names and just name it according to how many year's the team has been around after an "El Toro"

Unfortunately, this year will be El Toro XIII <-- bad juju

Team 1540 (Flaming Chickens), tries to link our robots back to our name each year, with varying degrees of success.

2005 (rookie year) - Rocky
2006 - Free-ranger
2007 - Fowler
------ From 2008 on, we've built two robots, and named both the prototype and final----

2008 - Nemo and Dory
2009 - Epic and Fail (guess which one was the competition bot!)
2010 - Pyro and Spy

Our robot is named X-Force.

Team members nominate robot names (they are encouraged to either have it with an X or Cat themed) and the whole team votes on which name they like best. X-Force beat out Xidane (which is a variation of the infamous French soccer player). The lead mentor had no idea who he was and when they found out he was eliminated altogether as a poor representation of what we stand for,

We've always named our 'bot after either an important scientist/physicist or in honor of someone who contributed to our team.

This year it looks like Schrodinger, aka Dinger, is going to win out.

Our robot is named Mark Koors. In this forum, I think no explanation is necessary.

Years past:
2009 - Marvin (the Martian)
2008 - Homer (the Hippo)
2007 - Lollipop (our manipulator resembled a lollipop)
2006 - Lucky (fortune cookie read "Lucky is coming your way")
2005 - Critical Mass

Ours has always been Burn-E (like Wall-E) because we are the Burning magnetos. But we are thinking about going with a penguins of Madagascar theme and naming ours Rico this year.

2008-2009 - Son of Maverick
2007-2008 - Blackjack
2006-2007 - Ace of Spades
2005-2006 - PokerFace
2004-2005 - P.G.B.I.F. - AKA Probably Going to Burst Into Flames
2003-2004 - Mayday
2002-2003 - Wild Bill
2001-2002 - Ace - AKA Ankle-Biter
2000-2001 - Scorpion
1999-2000 - Red Baron
1998-1999 - Maverick
1997-1998 - Stevie: Son of Roy
1996-1997 - Roy
1995-1996 - Hook

As you can see, most of the names have something to do with either cards or airplanes, going along with the Aces High theme...Although some are just random names, and some have real names but then acquire nicknames, as is the case with Ace.

Oh, and for 2010, we've actually yet to pick an *official* name. :ahh:

2009 - Otis

Abra Cadabra IV
18-02-2010, 10:09
2008: Foothill Flyer 1.0
2009: Leviathan

We still haven't picked a name for our 2010 bot; votes are currently split between Captain Falcon and Excalibur. I'm pushing for Captain Falcon. :D

Our robot's name this year is ButtKicker 2010 edition. Just kidding, but the real name is equally bad...uh.... I love my robot, team, and country, but the name is just horrible. I wanted to name it Sqanto, but the team leaders (majority girls) decided on Elenor Dante Rigby 3.0.

While mounting electronics, we came up with Ultimate Skippy Robot of Doom. It was originally going to be skippy because some drive train problems made the robot do something akin to skipping and I just tagged on 'Ultimate - Robot of Doom' to the end as a joke and everyone liked it. I'm not sure if it's official though.

This is our first year so we didn't have any predefined themes but after reading everyone else's response it sounds like a good idea to have one. If we do decide to have one I'll push Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy until it can be pushed no more. Hello Petunia!

2003: Big Joe (Joe)
2004: Holy Manoli (Mr. Manoli)
2005: Harvinator (Mrs. Harvey)
2006: Sonic DeCello (Mr. DeCello)
2007: Hungry Hungry Hepler (Mr. Hepler)

Team 2108 (Team Awkward Turtle) created a tradition our first year of naming our robots "Zippy" since we used so many zip-ties on the first robot (that's another story in itself...)

2007: Zippy T. Turtle
2008: Zippy T. 2
2009: Zippy 3 (Z3)
2010: Zippy 4 ("Zed 4")

The last two years, we have dropped the "T." part, and also created a nickname by which the team refers to the robot. This year, it was decided that since I am the captain and am English, and since the English pronounce the letter Z "zed", that we would refer to Zippy 4 as "Zed 4" :)

2007: Ursa (Our school mascot is a bear)

This year our teams theme is Top Gun. So every person on the team has a call sign that goes on our flight suits. It only makes sense for the robots name to be Ghost Rider because that is the name of the plane in the movie.

I'm pushing for "Power of H" or "Pinball Wizard", but nothing decided by the team yet. I guess there's a Big Bang Theory character tradition that would be broken, though.

One word of warning I have to other teams: if you're making up a name for your robot, make sure you look it up to make sure it's appropriate. 10 pages of definitions on urbandictionary.com made our team realize that we needed a new name for our robot.

This year, we're planning to name the robot after our head mentor if it's really good. Otherwise, we're going to name it after one of our clumsy seniors (who enthusiastically volunteered herself).

Just wondering, but do any other teams name the components of the robot? This year our kicker is the Frying Pan (even though it looks nothing like a frying pan) and our pull up mechanism is the Off-Bot-Pro.

We are using a spinner to "kick" the balls. Originally this was affectionately dubbed the "turtle flipper" but has since been renamed "the spinner of death" as we, when testing it at full strength (and not in its proper configuration) hit the ball in such a way that we almost hit one of the students in the head (he has good reflexes) and dislodged a ceiling tile.
I am not aware of any other named components on the robot, as of yet.

Our school mascot is the Astros, after Alan Shepard, who went to our school. So this year we really wanted to emphasize that in our spirit, and it just sorta happened that our robot was space capsule shaped, so we have named our robot the Freedom 8 (Shepard's capsule was the Freedom 7)

2009: Otis - in honor of Elisha Otis, of elevator fame. So named because of our ball elevator. The ball collector was "Hoover"

2010: Tommy - As in "Pinball Wizard". So named because of the plunger device in the ball kicker and the way our kicker "foot" resembles a bumper on a pinball machine. The mechanism that charges the kicker, fires it, releases the lift cable/mast and drives the winch (four separate functions) is the "Quadrophenia Device". However, once we installed the roll cage it got a second nickname - the Crusty Crab. There is a picture in "Robot Showcase" under "1918 NC Gears Week 5 Pictures"

We have two this year the competition bot is Heather named after a school counsler who dies last year frim brain cancer. Her son is on our team. Our practice robot is Oscar who was one of the La Vida Robot 4 who beat MIT in the underwater robot comp. He has now been deported and has a wife and kid here in the US that are citizens. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is now looking for a job in Mexico, Spain, or Canada. one of them is going to get a hell of an engineer that was trained in the US. Too bad for the US. We named the bot after him to honor his struggle.

Since our rookie year, our team has included "feet" in the name. This largely stems from the fact that we used mecanum wheels our first year, and named it "happy feet." For whatever reason we continued this our second year.

2007- Happy Feet (Mecanums, plus the movie of course)
2008- Sweet Feet (No clue.)
2009- Slippery Feet (Slick wheels, duh!)
2010- Big Foot (I know, not plural. Named for the kicker though!)

176 is now considering both Crazy Legs and Dr. Claw for our name this year. Dr. Claw was suggested because our hanging mechanism resembles a claw, and Crazy Legs was suggested because we have articulating wheels, so when we pick up our robot, the wheel mechanisms tend to swing out and hit our knees as we carry it.

we named our robot Weeble after the Weeble-Wobble toy. the slogan of the toy is "weebles wobble but they don't fall down!", which is the function of our robot this year. we've designed the robot to self-right itself by keeping a low center of gravity and utilizing the bumpers so that our robot will not fall down if we lose balance driving over a hump, it will simply wobble its self right again.
Weeble may wobble but he won't fall down! :D

During our second to last meeting (after losing 10 days to snow) we decided that we still needed to name the robot.

The 5 step program for naming a robot:

Step 1: boy or girl? "well it kicks balls; so it's a girl" (exact quote from a student)

Step 2: funny event or reference involving this? "Well Meghan kicked Carlton..." (Both students on team, thankfully an accident  )

Step 3: someone attempts to write "Meghan" on the robot but fails miserably with handwriting and writes "megHan"

Step 4: "megHan" is stuck on robot forever in Sharpie...

Step 5: Acceptance. "I guess it's megHan"

After seeing a few of our practice rounds in DC on Thursday, our team decided to name our robot Crazy Legs. Our autonomous programmer had forgotten to tune the PIDs, and as such our robot's articulating drive started to "buck" and, in essence, did a "jive dance" across the field, as the MC said. Luckily, the robot never crossed the middle line, and we even decided to leave the program as it was for a while, just for kicks. After a few more matches, some of the volunteers on the field even started to call the robot by its official name, without ever even hearing it. Very strange indeed.

Our robot's name hasn't really been decided yet (spite it being after Peachtree). Officially, it's name is the "Logan Rover" as we didn't change the name in TIMS from last year (yay - go us for remembering). Although it's been called the "T-Chassis", "Tanner's Design", and some other long name that I shot down cause I couldn't remember it and it was a mouthful.

Our original name (and the name we're commonly known by) is Purple Haze, so we started a tradition about 8 years ago to name our robots so that they have a PH in them somewhere.

This year's robot is named PHardos, a white dwarf star also known as Procyon B. Star Trek The Animated Series also created a Constellation-class ship (same class as the classic Enterprise) called the USS Phardos (NCC-1757).

Now we'll see how he/she/it performs in Dallas!

Although we never change our robot name in TIMS, we do name them each year.
2003 Hyo-supposedly Hyo was Panther in Japanese (we later learned not so true...)
2004 Oscar-in honor of the suction trash can lid (remember Sesame Street?)
2005 Mr. Bill-the tetra hadler on the end was a plastic bowling ball painted to resemble Mr. Bill of SNL fame. This really dates some of us....
2006 Rosie- this goal shooter resembled Rosie the maid on the Jetsons...see comment from 2005 and multiply by 10....
2007 Yoshi-the raptor-looking ring grabber
2008 Flingo- a play on our Beatles theme that year and the flinging action of our bot
2009-Ruby-a nod to its Rube Goldburgish design
2010 Scherman-in honor of our founding mentor and beloved friend, Dean Scherman, whose wise guidance, patience, and integrity made Team 1108 the team that they are, and who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer just a few short months after taking our team to Championships. We miss you Mr. Scherman and we are trying our best to make you proud.

Our first robot went unnamed.
Then came Jared, because he had to lose a lot of weight in a hurry. Mediocre robot.
Then Wilson, because tennis balls were incorporated. Mediocre robot.
Then came Shiela (from Red v. Blue), and we were semifinalists. Were she only faster, she would have been a top bot.
Then came Baba Ghanoush, who we only talk about in shameful whispers.
This year, it is Karen, who kicked so much butt at the FLR that we are all still stunned at how well we did: Top seed, Regional Winners, absolute rulers of the FLR mid-field with a 15-3 record.

...so in the future, all of our robots are going to have female names...

It's almost as hard as naming your kids. At least you get to see the robot grow up and take on its personality before you have to name it. They both (bots and kids) always leave home with more "tweaking" needed, get a little bruised up in the real world, come home for a little TLC, and their pictures always bring back a flood of good memories.

2006 - Sprocket - (it had about 16 of them on it)
2007 - RampZilla - (when deployed, we had a 16 foot "wingspan")
2008 - Trigonosaurus - (Trigon is latin for ball, our grabber "chomped" the ball, and could go to 10'+ high)
2009 - String Theory - (hopper walls and rollers used a lot of 1/4" polycord and tubing)
2010 - Jiminy Kickit - (smallest bot we've built, has extendable antennae for ball control, and the roller makes an annoying noise)

Notice no hanger on us? We have ALL the weight on the drivetrain. We had plans for a hanger... but the weather caused us to fall behind in time. If we still want to put one on we are going to put some serious cheesing into our robot... but we are doubting we are going to do it because we dont want to degrade our structural integrity and take off any of the functional parts of our drivetrain... which is just about EVERYTHING!

2005: Chubb-bot
2006: Chainey
2007: Dynamite
2008: Lightning
2009: Vortex
2010: Striker

(The team voted on Marvin in 2003, opted to keep the theme in 2004, UTC Chubb became our new main sponsor in 2005 so the robot was named after them to honor them, in 2006 the robot had massive lengths of chain, the 2007 name was based off of a team cheer, 2008 was lightning fast, 2009 was shaped like a vortex, and by now I'm out of the loop and I'm not sure of the 2010 reasons.)

2010 - Chester - This year we decided to turn our flaming ball headed mascot into a game player. Our t-shirt is him bouncing the soccer ball off his chest. We're a good kicking, endless loop robot which catches the ball off the tower so it seemed appropriate. Also who can resist a good pun. :-)
