putting placards on the robot

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what should the placards that we put on the robot show (besides our team's number and main sponsors), and how we're supposed to put in on the robot (how many placards, what size, where, etc.)?

There are lots of ways to do this. Our robot has lexan on each side on the top to prevent balls from resting and to protect our controls. We use stickers with our school name and main sponsor on each side, just stuck to the lexan. There is no specific requirement as to size or shape, just that you put them on the robot. See <R14>.

R-14 and R-15 are the pertinent rules in this matter. It appears that you require only to have the team number on each side of the robot. Otherwise, you are generally free to do whatever you wish with sponsor and school logos.

If you are looking for a lightweight covering to put logos on, I suggest foamcore. I don't know about other countries, but in Canada you can get black core that is pretty resilient in impact and relatively stiff. 1114's 2008 robot and 1006's 2009 robot both feature this material, which has some form of logo or design stuck onto the foamcore. If you are looking for a cheap source, see if anyone on your team has a friend in the picture framing business. The main benefits of this stuff are that it is cheap, easy to shape, and weighs next to nothing.

<R14> ROBOTS shall display their school name (or the name of the supporting youth organization, if appropriate), and primary sponsor name and/or logo whenever the ROBOT is on the FIELD, including practice sessions.

And the team number is on the bumpers and does not need to be on the robot in another location. <R15> Teams shall display their team number on the BUMPERS in four locations at approximately 90-degree intervals around the perimeter of the ROBOT. The numerals must be at least 4 inches high, at least in ¾-inch stroke width and in a contrasting color from its background. Team Numbers must be clearly visible from a distance of not less than 100 feet, so that judges, referees, and announcers can easily identify competing ROBOTS.So, any method of getting the school / organization name and main sponsor(s) on the robot is fine. Paint, stickers, paper taped/glued down, or even masking tape with the information written on it will work.

I like the black foam core idea; that would look very classy!

Please do not use black numbering on the blue bumpers. It's hard to read from a distance. Most visible is white numbers, on both red and blue bumpers.

We had black numbers on both colors of our bumpers. We were asked by field management to make it more visible... silver sharpie outline worked great and was a fast and cheap fix.

Meanwhile, I heard at some regionals the inspectors were making teams paint over their contrasting outline to make the numbers a single color. :confused:

That is so weird. We have bright blue numbers with white outline. What really makes black numbers a pain is when they are close together and on dark blue bumpers and deep red bumpers!
