Probably because they get satisfaction from toying with our minds and emotions.

They must have used this (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/security/bf21/) to write the team update in!
I just scared the bejesus out of a few team members saying there was a team update that changes the game entirely and that I can't recall an update that was quite like it in content.
They should have used BOLD on the second line.

Yeah then they just scanned it into the computer. It all makes sense now. I should have known

I'm glad they published this update. It settles the "6v0" controversy once and for all. Good for the GDC!

Ok, this is totally off topic but does anyone know the link for the 2010 Boilermaker webcast.
P.S. Sorry for being of topic:D

Field Fault....Do a Line Dance!
"criss cross"
" Now cha cha y'all"
" Now everybody clap your hands"
I gotta kinda think they did that just to screw with us after the CD community exploded at the unprecedentedly drastic rule change between week 1 and 2. Sort of a WHAT? TU17 in between week 2 and 3? What is this, presto change-o rules every week?
It makes 100% sense to me. Most of the FIRST FRC management are from the early days of computing or government. It was not unusual to see pages that say
This page intentionally left blank
So rather than have people worry that they missed an important Game Play Week 2 update (servers down, missing URL, etc, etc) they published Update 17. Nice, neat, tidy. Just what you'd expect.
On the other hand never underestimate the GDC ...

You have to invert the colors to see it.
If you hold your computer monitor up to a bright light, it is very clear:
"We are NOT changing the rules because of 469 so quit asking"

These are the sort of changes to the game that I have come to expect from FIRST.

I wonder if this gave 469 an "oh crap" moment.
...Why even publish an Update?
because updates are published every tuesday.
trains gotta run on schedule !
Let's hope all the referees get the memo this time.

Someone suggested something about this "Update". The GDC is pretty sensitive to what goes on in the FIRST world, including these forums. Could a blank update be a statement to the grumblings about needing rule changes? A statement that says, "we think everything is just fine how it is"?

this is my favorite update of the season...
i think it is most certainly a statement, without making one. i think the GDC likes the game right where it is at the moment.

I know why you're happy. And after careful reconsideration, looking at the rules through the eyes of a lawyer, seeing quite a few matches, (live and online), I have to applaud you and 125 for thinking outside the box.

Thanks Mr. Henry. I appreciate the compliment, as I'm sure the rest of the team does as well. We're just hoping ours is as successful as 469s was this past weekend.

Yea, this is a great example that speaks volumes. It says "We feel the change to the qualifiying points worked. 469 and robots like it are causing no foul. Everything is good. See you Week Three.
P.S. have fun tricking people."

Hold on ... if you look carefully, there are minor differences in the spacing between the dots on the page under "General Notices." I think it is Morris code. It looks like it says, ".-. --- -... --- - ... .-- .. .-.. .-.. ... .-- .. -- " which is translated, "ROBOTS WILL SWIM"
Looks like they are sending out a game hint for next year. A water game! Whoo hooo! ;)

It begins...
I think people are reading too much into this.
It doesn't mean "The GDC is happy!" All it means is "The GDC doesn't feel it is appropriate to make any changes right now." These are very different things, imho.
For all I know, there are people very upset by how things are playing out, but these same people believe making any changes at this point would be a bad thing. (I would agree... changes now = very bad.)
No, I don't have any inside knowledge. I'm just frustrated by how much people are reading from so little.

Here many thought the game would be boring, including a boring thread after week 1.
Now some people are asking for an update to "lessen" the scoring based on certain ideas.
Are we now asking for updates every week to change the game rules?
Update 16 was the biggest game changer, maybe ever.

Let's get this thread up to 100 posts so all the 469 guys who haven't read the update yet will have heart attacks thinking it's a major re-do.
I saw 40+ posts and was like "ok what did they do now?"....:)
Oh, but it is a major redo.
It's the first update this season to say nothing, and yet be dissected like the game hints.

I emailed a team member that Team Update 17 was up and 469's strategy is now illegal. I immediately got a "NO WAY! Glad we didnt take the risk":ahh: response before they read the update. Then a confused  response
So basically it is a believable rumour to start.

This is my post to run up the count!
We should read into this update more...maybe the GDC is letting us know that they aren't going to change anything else for the rest of the season! Have we ever had an update that contained absolutely nothing?
I think people are reading too much into this.
. . .
I'm just frustrated by how much people are reading from so little.
As far as I know, the GDC's default course of action is to do nothing at this point in the season. Of course, they can and do make updates if there is something to clarify or that needs to be changed. But the GDC making an empty update is instead simply making a statement. Considering that this sort of thing is (AFAIK) unprecedented, we can guess it's a pretty big/profound/attention-grabbing statement. If the GDC wanted to say nothing, they would have. If the GDC wanted to tell us something directly, they would have. But the GDC doing something like this tells me that they want us to figure out their message. In other words, they encouraged this sort of meaning reading and speculation by doing this.

...Have we ever had an update that contained absolutely nothing?Absolutely nothing? Au contraire! Let it be noted in the annals of FIRST history that on this day the game design committee did NOT choose to change, clarify, explain, or interpret ANY PART of the 2010 Manual.
And of course if you print the update and hold it up to a candle for a few moments, the following message will appear:
Pick 67 or 469.

Yeah, cause 469 doesn't play again until Troy Week 4, so why would the GDC want to give them more than 2 days to come up with a new design? :ahh:

Note to anyone considering this: Don't do this to a mentor when he's celebrating an anniversary, causing him to drop everything to check the update. His wife thought it was amusing though.

Did any other mentors send their team(s) an e-mail announcing a quiz on Team Update 17? One of our mentors, Danny Diaz, did. Today is travel day to Dallas. He is so mean. :)

I can't wait for them to release the one scheduled for March 30 a couple of days late...

He is a tease. A big one. And he loves his chicken hat. He ALWAYS wears it at the Worlds in ATL. I'm making his chicken a ref shirt. :)
And, he may never admit how much he loves the students on our team but when we have Senior Toast night the Friday of competition at Lone Star, he has been known to get all mushy. Don't tell him I said that though.
