I'm working on a project for a friend where I need to make a program that will access USB devices, monitor their input, and turn on/off other devices such as a fan and an igniter. This is in Java

I have been looking online for solutions to use USB ports but have been coming up short handed. I know of the jUSB but most threads I have read online have figured it out.

I'm wondering if anyone knows or has an idea on how to go about programming USB ports. Heck, if it comes down to it, we may end up making our own design.

Your best bet would be to use a device that uses a usb-to-serial adapter. Then speak to the device as you would any other serial device.

The project is running on a minimum budget (of about -$25). I would love to do something like that, but we don't have the funds.

I am looking into using a serial port sensor from the school, but there was limited success. Do you have any other ideas?

You want cheap USB hardware? Why not just use one of the many microcontrollers that has the USB controller and phy built in?

Java IMHO is a HORRIBLE language to use for that, I would recommend C/C++ since you need to make a driver for the USB.
