View Full Version : Dean's List Finalists
In case you haven't heard, it turns out the Dean's List Awards will be presented at 12:20PM on Friday afternoon in the West Plaza, NOT during one of the award ceremonies. http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/ I believe the West Plaza is the field between GWCC and the Dome... Oh yea... and the Secretary of Education will be there :D
See you all there!
Interesting place/time for the award to be carried out. Wonder why that is. Secretary of Education's schedule?

That would be my guess, although it could be any number of reasons.

I feel like a lot of the finalists won't be able to attend this.
I feel like a lot of the finalists won't be able to attend this.
Just wondering, why do you feel that way? I understand that the finalists are probably instrumental in their team's participation during the event, but I would hope that they (and their available teammates) would make attending this awards ceremony their top priority for this time.

I'm guessing that this is during a lunch break?
Also, I know for a fact that there are finalists who are their teams' drivers...which sort of sucks if this isn't during a break.
I really hope nothing goes wrong with the robot that I have to fix programming-wise.
I'd hate to miss this.

I feel like a lot of the finalists won't be able to attend this.
I feel like many finalists won't be in Atlanta at all. 1712 had to pull some strings to help our finalist, Delia, make it down to Atlanta. I doubt that every finalist who's on a team that isn't competing will be able to make it down. And many others will have matches or other team-related responsibilities.
Also, I know for a fact that there are finalists who are their teams' drivers...which sort of sucks if this isn't during a break.
That's what I was originally thinking. But 12:20 seems like a good time for lunch, or a break...I don't know exactly what the schedule is for ATL, so I can't say for sure. I would hope that FIRST would consider how instrumental these students are on their teams, and schedule the awards ceremony at a time when there is a guarantee that they won't be on the field or trying to fix their robot two minutes before their final match.
I'm kinda surprised at how odd the scheduling seems to be. Knowing me, I'd have a chance of getting caught up in the competition, start fixing something, and forgetting ever such a awards ceremony was scheduled.
Now if it was during the regularly scheduled awards ceremony, I know there'd be people who would be more free and able to attend.
If it is indeed lunch, it will make inner team scheduling interesting if something happens to break and I am needed. Usually our team has a crew who eats their lunch and goes back to work during the lunch break.
Certainly makes for interesting scheduling.

As a side note, it's an incredible shame that many teams are not going to be able to watch their students possibly get honored at this ceremony because they will be busy. I certainly hope this award ceremony is recorded and webcast so I can watch from home.
I believe that lunch in Atlanta starts at noon. Therefore, most people who do not have work to do would be just finishing up, or able to take it out to the presentation area.
Of course, that's somewhat field-dependent, but should still work out.
However: Given that no robot is perfect, I fully expect that quite a few of the winners will be in the pits working on their robots.
I like FIRST's attempt to set the winners apart. However, like presenting the WFA on Thursday after practice matches, I don't think this will last very long in this time slot.

At least it is not on Thursday. I hope to make it on Friday. This is a very important event and I want the finalists to know it. They are very special people!
Maybe they'll feed us? I mean it is smack in the middle of lunch time. I do feel bad for finalist whose teams are competing. Like its been said, most of these winners are a crucial part of their team.

I'm very sorry that I won't be in Atlanta to help celebrate this very special award. It would be a priority in my schedule to be there. Just as with all of the events and awards ceremonies, there isn't a good time. Everything fits around the robot competitions and the event planners do the best that they can as more and more wonderful events continue to be fit into the already jam-packed days.
Because everything centers around the robot competitions and because the Finalists are involved and crucial to their teams, there will be students who may not be able to attend the ceremony. Perhaps they can plan to have a teammate or representative in their place and to remind the members of the team when and where the ceremony is so that they can be there to be a part of it. The good news is that the announcements will be made on Friday during the noontime and this will give folks the rest of the time in Atlanta to enjoy and celebrate with everyone.

Dang, if I was a Dean's List Finalist, and in Atlanta, I'd crawl through broken glass to get there.
I'm going to do my best to be at the award ceremony to honor the 10 awesome students who earned this award.

Team 987's Dean's List candidate will be at home with her team since we are unable to attend this year. Any idea how soon and by what method she/we will find out who the final 10 awardees are?

Knowing ChiefDelphi, it'll probably be on here by the end of the day.

Dear FIRST,
Please webcast this.

Where can I send that letter?
Is there a Q&A that we can ask about potetial webcastings?

Agreed! I also really hope that this is shared on the webcast for all the finalists, their families and teams who are not able to go to Atlanta.
I really appreciate FIRST wanting to make our ceremony distinct and special, and also understand the massiveness of this event and the craziness it must be to schedule this, but I'm very worried that a lot of finalists, teams and mentors won't be able to come. I know it's lunch time and they will probably remind us but I won't lie- if my team was there and I was working on something, talking to a judge, etc., I would skip the award ceremony in a heart beat. I think that very quality is part of why we've all been named finalists.
PS- Thanks for the shout out Sean!!! :D

::sadface:: I might be missing 1511's Rookie Meet N' Greet for this unless we change the time... which is pending right now.
:x...but hey, we'll all be together! XD I look forward to it.

Just for you Crystal (and for the importance of the Dean's List announcement) Team 1511 will be moving the All Rookie Meet and Greet to Friday right at the end of matches! It sure seems like there is not enough time to do it all in Atlanta!

Good call...the Rookie Meet and Greet can be (fun) pandemonium all by itself...I don't think it would mix well with the Dean's List awards!!

FIRST doesn't seem to be doing the best job of timing things... Next year it'll be better though, personally I hope alongside WFA.
I won't be able to make it; I wish the winners well! GO KATIE!
While I'm sure that FIRST has a good reason for picking this time slot (such as the Secretary of Education's schedule) I have a feeling lunch will be really hectic. I'm crossing my fingers that our robot won't break and bringing protein bars to substitute for lunch... since there's always a good chance we'll be queuing for a match right after the break

From the Dean's List Criteria...
All FIRST Dean's List Finalists (we anticipate there will be 96 FIRST Dean’s List Finalists for the 2010
season) will be considered for the FIRST Dean’s List at the FIRST Championship in Atlanta using the
essays provided from their nominating teams. FIRST Dean's List Finalists do not have to be present at
the FIRST Championship to be considered for advancement to the FIRST Dean's List. This year, ten
Finalists shall be selected at the FIRST Championship (FRC) as the FIRST Dean’s List Award winners.

Just as are posted on the bottom of the awards (http://www2.usfirst.org/2010comp/events/DC/awards.html) page for each individual regional I'm sure they will be posted on the awards page for the Championships.
Also, it will probably be posted in this thread later Friday evening.
Good luck to all the finalists!

I'm a finalist and wasn't able to make it down to Atlanta. The wait is driving me crazy!!!! I wish they would webcast this.
(Please, please, please would some nice person with a laptop post the 10 winners?)
They had the event which featured the pretty awesome rap song.
I don't have the list, but congratts to all of them. We'll have to take a group picture when we can.

Looking at the FIRST website (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/content.aspx?id=432), I don't see a place where they can update the awards info such as the Dean's List, The Woodie Flowers Award, or The Volunteer Of The Year Award on Friday. Perhaps there is and I just haven't found it. It was really cool to be able to see the awards given each day during the regional competitions. Further looking shows that there is space for the info to be provided in each of the 4 fields. I still don't see a place for the Dean's List, though.

My daughter is one of the 92 Finalists for the First FIRST Dean's List. Though she was not named one of the top ten, she, and all the finalists had a chance to meet Dean, Woodie, and US Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan.
Cameras and videographers galore!!!
All the finalists received a back pack full of gifts from various sponsors. Maybe a finalist will list the "haul". Additionally, the 10 Dean's List Finalists will travel to Manchester, NH to spend time with Dean, DECA and FIRST Hqs.
Congratulations to All!!!

My webcast is a little choppy, so I don't know if it was mentioned or not. But the animation that played to describe the FIRST logo and design of the Dean's List trophy was designed by students on team 116, Epsilon Delta. Their names could briefly be seen in the end credits, before it was faded out.
Great job Anthony Szymczyk, Amy Frankhouser, and Jared Hunsaker!

Dean did say they would get more information to us later, but not how or when, and as far as I know none of us have gotten any further details.
Also, thank you to everyone for the congratulations! I think we all know all 500 kids submitted for Dean's List are superstars and all deserve all the love the FIRST community gives. Thank you guys so much for everything :D

Since these 10 are the future of leadership in FIRST, would it be possible for teams to post essays here for each student? Are they already posted somewhere?
The only person on that list that I know is Seth Berg, so I would like to know more about the rest as we move forward to improve FIRST alongside each other.
Congrats and I look forward to working with more of you.

I know that the entry submitted for Delia Votsch can be found in the white paper section along with one or two others. I would also like to know more about not only the ten winners but all the regional winners, and even the ones who didn't win. Each one of the students nominated is an example for others to follow.

One of Carlos Pineda's qualities is his humility, which made posting his nomination difficult. But we finally convinced him that he has qualities that others may want to emulate. His nomination is posted in the white papers now as well.

Thank you for posting the white paper, Dan.
Please thank Carlos for me, too. I have great hope that he will be able to make the journey to meet Dean Kamen and Dr. Flowers. :) He deserves it. If he can not, he will always know that he earned this moment of recognition and is valued deeply by his team, his mentor(s), and by the FIRST community.
I hope everyone takes a moment to read the Dean's List submissions that have been posted in the white papers section and that they think about the young leaders that are growing up and impacting others just as much as they are being impacted. It's made of win.
Thank you again, Dan,
