View Full Version : [FF]: [FF]: Kettering Kickoff 2010
EDIT: Didn't realize the "[FF]:" was automatically added... oh well.

Not in this one, but: I think Kevin would like some testing of the drafting program (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2307) (last file down) before Season Long starts drafting. I know I tested the early version for about a week under "battle conditions" before releasing the less-beta version. It'll also help with tier division.

Well, excellent. Anything that makes my job easier.
I'm going to call this it for players. Feel free to start to send me lists, but be aware that there will be at least 1 more team joining (if space isn't filled, a 2337 practice bot [basically our 'bot without hanging mechanism, hopefully driven by pre-rookies]).

Draft order needs to be re-done since I didn't update the players list. Will be up soon.
Aldo, draft moved to Sunday night, 7 pm.
Send meh lists!
It turns out the players list had been updated, but there was some sort of error with the program. It would include only the first 11 players if there were 12, but would take all 13 if there were 13. Odd.
I "solved" it by ending the player's list with a newline followed by a -1 (like a lists .txt; the readme didn't mention a need to do this, but idk, it worked).

Basel A,
Make sure you remove team 68 from both the random teams file and from the teamlist in the tier file before you load the tier into the program otherwise the program is going to try to assign them as the random team where appropriate each time.

Will do. (I'd forgotten to do it for the random list, heh, thanks)

I guess now would be a good time to propose my "third round un-serpentine rule", or drafting 1-x x-1 x-1 instead of 1-x x-1 1-x.
Not interested in doing the draft manually and the program doesn't have that setting built in (as far as I know anyway). Sorry Chris, otherwise I'd seriously consider it.

That's how it's going to look for the draft. If teams are added later, you can trade for them. If teams drop out, you can trade for a team in the pool. Picks are locked in Friday night at 10 pm.
Okay, I lied, because 1075 isn't coming either. I'll edit them out...

Well, there you have it. Feel free to make trades until Friday night.
I pulled together a little spreadsheet to try and do some scouting stuff for this FF draft, and I took the point values every team got under my system, and added them together to get everyone's "predicted" standings under my system. Basically, OPR per team.
Also, I didn't get rftgnow's score, because 217 had 1.5 times the score of the next team (probably by playing in an extra regional, mostly) so he just completely threw everything and got a ridiculously high score.

WOOHOO!
Are you using scores from the season, or just during the off season? If they're scores from the season, they're likely to be off compared to the off season.

Any chance you could run the numbers for Last Event OPR? I would but I have homework and all that pesky college stuff.

I'm using scores from during the season. The problem is that I don't know who went to what off-season event, and what happened there. Basically, I just threw this all together based on TBA.

I also have homework ;) I think I'll try to do it on Wednesday. 1114's database?
Also, I should emphasize this isn't a very good ranking system. For instance, team 66 got a really high score in my system for winning Ann Arbor, even though they were the third pick and did not really do well during qualifications.

Well, 1114 doesn't go to Championship which is most KK teams' last event. All I know off the top of my head that does CMP OPR is FRC Tracker for iPhone.
I was recently made aware that Team 469, Las Guerrillas, Einstein Finalists, will be attending Kettering Kickoff. Now, if added to the pool as would be normal, there would be cries of "unfair!" As a matter of fact, Clinton would already have traded for them.
But that's pretty unfair. he knew it, and let me know.
So after some careful consideration, we'll be holding a silent auction ending Thursday night at 9 pm. You bid with your current draft spots. The 1st overall pick is worth 36 (2nd pick 35, 3rd pick 34, etc.), the bottom pick is worth 4. You may only bid full teams (not half of the 1st overall and 2/3 of whatever else). The winner will lose the picks be bid, and those teams will leave the draft but will not enter the pool, they'd be gone. Yes, this means rtfgnow has more overall bidding power than anyone else. I consider disallowing players who missed their turns, but I figured if they didn't show up then, they won't show up now. And if they show up now, then we're rewarding improvement.
Consider that 469 lost at MARC, which had comparable depth of field to KK. Also consider that even complete dominance isn't going to be scored much higher than a team's alliance partners.
Go!
P.S. If you're a skimmer, just read the bold.

So we get to see who bid what right?
Anyway I'll start the bidding with the very last pick of the draft.
And I hereby use the 2nd last pick of the draft for 469.
@Chrisisme, I have the app. I'll try to run stuff tomorrow, see if I can get it online tomorrow as well.
I'd be willing to trade my 1st pick spot for 469 (28 points).
You may bid more than one pick, just add up the points. Note that you will lose both teams, so be careful. Be sure to note how many points your bids are (count down from 36 if you're unsure).
@Chris Yeah, just post your bids here. Like a silent auction, you can see the bidding sheet.

Do I understand correctly that I could put up all my teams and get 469 and two of 302 314 468 1506 1946?
This is a request of confirmation, it is not a bid.

Sorry Zach.

I considered this for a bit, and I have to say no. If you trade away 2 teams for one, you may not acquire any teams from the pool (though you may trade).
Why? By trading away those three teams in exchange for that one, you're saying that those three teams are worth that one team, so you would have the (rough) equivalent of three teams.

I am still waiting on confirmation that I can get two teams off the wait list if I put up all 65 points.
Still not a bid.
Thank you for the confirmation. I am not going to bid away 217, therefore I am out of the bidding (the sum of my other two teams would tie the current high bid).
Thats my bid!
(I have to say I thought that'd happen.. Are you sure? If so, count up the points, and post that)

I'll laugh if it's revealed that 469 SawZalled off the top of their robot and just decided to be a regular midfielder after IRI.

I'm sure. 53 points.
I'll trade my first and last pick (1243 and 1189) for 469. That's 31 points.

I'm not sure if I like the system. It just rewards who got higher in the draft, or worse who didn't show up. Realistically only a first round pick could possibly outscore 469, and if you have weak enough back picks there's a solid chance 469 could outscore all 3, or at least get close enough to not count. Plus there's no penalty for dropping a good team, since those points effectively "die".

Per Basel and my conversation, I'm not a fan either. However, I'm not the one running the draft, and there were other solutions talked about for this, but ultimately, it did come down to Basel's choice for which one to implement.
However I do agree, it only favors those who got a high pick in the draft. Players who got to pick earlier would happily trade away their 2nd and 3rd picks, that they acquired from the "picked over" list of teams, while players who picked lower have to hold on to the teams they got to even compete with the higher first picks.
Zach, note that the current highest bid is 53.

I didn't particularly like the system, but on short notice, I couldn't think of a more fair one to implement (and at this point I'm not willing to switch).
Thought for the sake of discussion, it is surely a way for a player to make up for previous bad picks or missing the draft. However, there could be a legitimate debate on whether or not that's even a bad thing. It's not that bad an idea to allow those who made bad choices in the past a "second chance."
As for rewarding those who got higher in the draft:
1. It's a luck. You weren't lucky. Neither was I. Sucks for us.
2. The draft was already like that, and this isn't a major amplification of the previous effect. In this case, so far 469 isn't even going to a high-table player.
Certainly it isn't a perfect system, but to be fair I did consider other solutions, and felt this was the most fair time-sensible solution, and I had no time to work out the kinks.
So does the winner of the 469 "Auction" put their teams back into open play to trade for?
So does the winner of the 469 "Auction" put their teams back into open play to trade for?
No, they're out of the draft.
Why? Undoubtedly at least a first round pick will be given up to gain 469. Allowing someone to pick up any of the first-round picks for free (well, third round pick) would heavily unbalance the draft, comparable to allowing 469 to be chosen as such. I don't feel like that'd be fair, so I'm allowing players to (in my opinion) overpay (or simply outbid each other) for 469.

You could do additional auctions for the remaining teams, maybe.
Zach, note that the current highest bid is 53.
So it is. My b.
You could do additional auctions for the remaining teams, maybe.
Conidered it, but:
1. With more than 1 team being bid, we'd have several going at once (confusing) and
2. Each auction would be somewhat watered down.
3. Also, that's not very time-sensible, with only a couple days, not everyone is willing to get on to bid for less exemplary teams than 469, several times. Getting one draft-full of people together once is hard as it is.
How about you just add 469 to the person with the lowest OPR and drop that persons 3rd pick for 469. One person already calculated it in this thread.
Nevermind, just looked and ZachO, who is leading the Auction with the highest bid, would also fit the bill that I just said. Let the auction continue lol =]

If enough people sent in lists it's trivial to rerun the draft and just assume everyone would put 469 #1

Actually Luke is leading it, and he should have the lowest, having gotten random teams. Though the calculated scores were based off an unnamed equation (notably unrelated to OPR) , with data generated from an unofficial source.
However, the point of FF is that everyone thinks they can choose the best teams, using their own method. That suggestion would basically say "Everyone should pick using OPR, because the highest OPR will give the best score," which just isn't a good idea. Sure, this is idealistic theory, but I try to stick to the standards.
@Chris Several people didn't, and a few others submitted half-lists, intending to make the 3rd or even second picks live. Either way, a re draft... Okay, admittedly a pretty good idea but there just isn't enough time to get everyone together to re-run the draft, especially on a weekday, a couple days out of the competition.

Alright, so I have two rankings sheets for you. The first is merely added-together OPR of the three teams you've picked, and the second is the OPR minus the DPR of the three teams. Data grabbed off of the team's last event thanks to FRC Tracker 2010 for iOS. It's a great app, I really recommend it.

Yes. The point is that in elims, you'd rather have a 6-1 guy than an 8-6 guy (OPR, DPR). They're just more likely to win.
