You never know, that's what makes them so exciting!

Last year we got one on Christmas Eve IIRC.

Last year it came out on Christmas Eve. It will probably come out between December 21st and 25th so as not to disrupt schooling.

Do a search here in CD for past "official game hint" threads. It could provide some fun reading to help with the antsy stuff - as well as give you an idea of 'when'.

This year I told the incoming freshmen about the game hints in the summer when we were kicking off our boat race, and almost everyday, I have freshmen come up to me, asking if there are any new clues out:ahh: . I love their enthusiasm! Now our whole team is getting antsy waiting! I hope the clues roll out before Christmas so I have an excuse to skipping out one stuff to read CD ::safety::

Pi, used in the calculation of the size of the round parts, in 3.14(159...). There are 5 round bumps shown in that picture. So add .5 to 3.14 and round, and you get 4! IT MUST BE A HINT!

I think all this hint talking is ridiculous... Just wait for the kick off, yes I am very exited, but this is pretty ridiculous. The games are so whack that you really can't think of it in advance. Honestly. The last year's hint was something that looked like a machine gun to me.

I'd rather that the teams who applied for the NASA grant - learn about their status, first. It is apparent from the thread in CD that there are teams who would love to have the grant and would like to know where they stand.

Then - all heck can break loose with the wishingwishingwishing for the hint as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps those who are so inclined - could write a poem or carol requesting one. That passes the time nicely. Well, at least 5 minutes worth. And they would put a positive spin on the chest-beating, nagging, and complaining.

If they do show us robot components (such as 2008's IR board), I'm sure that they would be new. Showing us something that we already have (cRio) or something incredibly vague (say, a black and red wire hooked up to visible battery terminals), you lose the point and the fun of the hint.

I'd like to see a hint next week, personally. There's no way to really guess; it's been pretty random for the past few years.

And I didn’t forget I promised to tell you about the GDC meeting last week. Creativity levels were high so we worked until 9pm Saturday night and were back on the job by 8am Sunday. Unfortunately, we were so productive, everything we talked about will probably be part of the big reveal at Kickoff January 8th. However, Aidan Browne wanted me to tell you we’re seriously looking at Ben & Jerry’s Phish food.

Hint, anyone?

Phish food = water game :)

1500 is really ambitious. Search "game hint" (yes - contrary to popular belief the search function actually exists!) and have it search thread titles only, and display results as threads...last year, it did take us about three days to reach 500 posts. The funny thing is, when the hint comes out, lots of people have the same exact ideas. After a few days, if you've kept up with all of the posts, ideas repeat themselves because other people didn't read the 10 pages that already exists...and discussions die down as soon as the next hint comes out.

I thought that the Opah was the first hint for the 2009 game (being posted in late 2008)...the riddle was the second hint.

Thats a good point. I never thought about it that way. Now that I think about it, it kinda does mess with my conception of the game. I want my mind to be completely clear before I watch the game animation and read the manual. That way, I can conceptualize and predict how the game will be played and what major factors to take into account.

Great point!

The hint all ready came out it is about tennis balls and how could we pick them up

demosthenes2k8
14-12-2010, 20:54
I'm pretty sure that the tennis ball hint was a clue for the college game, as well as the 30k feet one.

EricH
14-12-2010, 21:51
No. And No.

The college FIRST pilot has a completely separate Game Design Committee. So the picture of the tennis ball, which was posted by dlavery here, is not related to that. Same for the 30,000 feet one, posted by Bill on the FRC blog. AFAIK, neither of those two persons is on the collegiate GDC (they have enough problems designing one game already).

The tennis ball is not the official clue, either. EVERYTHING posted here is unofficial, unless it is linked back to official sources (FIRST site, Bill's Blog, Game Manual, and the like), in which case it is only official as far as the quote/link goes. Dave Lavery may be a GDC member, but on these forums, nothing he says can be taken as official, unless he specifically says that it is (in which case, the official sources comment earlier comes into play, as Dave always links back to the official source location).

Why did someone have to post about how they were waiting patiently for the hint? Now everyone's impatient!

Cow Bell Solo
14-12-2010, 23:41
In addition, they usually post the hint on the FIRST website on the FRC page, which there currently isn't no post as well as I'm sure Bill will mention it on his Blog and all. Plus you will know when it is released here on CD as that is the only thread that will be getting the comments.

It's Driving me crazy! I understand these clues have nothing important to do with the game (last year the Picture of the Ball Return was the closest thing we had to real). It is fun to speculate, get's all the juices flowing in the brain in time for Kick-Off.

I hope they release one soon. The fact I've been getting on a computer whenever I can to check for one during school means I'm getting close to going insane.

Oh jeez, is there a cure?I don't think anybody knows. There's trying to quit FIRST, but that doesn't work very well in most cases. I don't think anybody knows. There's trying to quit FIRST, but that doesn't work very well in most cases. The best way is to graduate, then go somewhere with no FIRST, and ideally no internet so you can't track FRC activities. That doesn't always work, though, especially the internet part.

No internetz??????:(

If Bill won't give us an official hint in the very near future, maybe Dave will give us some more red herrings to keep us entertained! ;)

you were right!

Bring me ... a herring! (http://www.dalton-winery.com/Content/ContentUploadedImages/Promo/redherring.png)

The article (http://www.dalton-winery.com/content/red_herring.aspx) the picture is posted in is entitled Dynamic Duo and the Red Herrings.

Discuss.

Game hint next week!

http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/2010/12/frc-staff-doesnt-know-it-yet-but-were.html

Isn't the name kind of a hint?

The staff doesn't know it but we're having haggen daaz at 2.

Wasn't there earlier mention of haggen daaz?

They've had Haggen Daaz on so many blog posts, I doubt that's the game hint.

Of interesting note: the Israeli Assistant Regional Director was in NH recently, and the article Dave posted links to a winery in Israel.

Dave mentions food in many of his posts (http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/2010/08/buy-pool-noodles-now.html), even in ones from previous years (http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/2009/09/tune-in-tomorrow.html), so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Also, the image of the red herring was one of the first results in a Google Image search (http://www.google.com/images?q=Red+Herring) for "red herring", so I wouldn't read too much into that either.

That being said, I can't wait for the real game hint next week!

Dave, I believe that song was the shrubbery you wanted.

The red herring is obvious! Even EricH sees it. It certainly comes from Monte Python and the Search for the Holy Grail. The Knights who say NI first demand a shrubbery for payment. When that payment is delivered, they then notify King Arther that they have changed their name and require a tree be cut down with a herring as additional payment!

This means that in order to be successful, your robot needs to do one thing at the first of the round and something completely different at the end! Of course, that happens every year.

Uhh?... Never mind.

2 hints that will be successfully made of win but don't actually mean anything?

And I hope the weather is warm @ HQ - ice cream = brrr here in Austin, Texas right now.

Maybe this thread should be re-titled "Waiting impatiently for the 2011 hint!" since having over 100 posts doesn't seem very patient.

Really, Jane? REAALLY? What's cold for you? Cause, for two days in a row it didn't get warmer than -3 degrees here in Michigan. :yikes: Plus, it's ICE CREAM! It's always time for ice cream! Even in the dead of winter!

If we get anywhere near -3, we'll be in biiiiigggg trouble. Our pipes would be bursting like waterworks.

Enjoy your ice cream, I like hot cocoa. With marshmellows.

I think it is safe to say that the singing in fact worked. Bill announcing a game hint next week makes me go insane! My guess, since bill has been regularly posting every-other day, the game hint is going to come out thursday.

Maybe the 2011 game will be a water game, but FROZEN water...hockey? snowball fight? Sledding? Skiing? hehe.

Mmm, some hot cocoa actually sounds delicious right now. Have you ever sprinkled cocoa mix on top of vanilla ice cream? SO yummy.

I doubt that water would stay frozen for long considering the tendency of our motors to overheat ::ouch:: (we kept a ice cooler in close range at all times to fix it between matches)

Also considering the fact the cost to maintain frozen water in places like LA and San Diego, I highly doubt there will be any frozen water anywhere.

You can take some from NH. We're usually sick of it after a while.
Good luck making it last though.

Don't forget that we also have a regional in Hawaii :D

Of course, we do have snow (http://www.khon2.com/ugc/cat/weatherwatcherugc/MICF53tUjEihvZ2ELXIa_w.aspx) on the Big Island of Hawaii from time to time, but the location of the regional is not there.

We in Israel easily get high 80s inside the arena during the regional, and the closest ice is in a not-so-friendly-neighbor. Although I'm definitely not gonna complain if we get ice :o

Ice? I think we have been there, done that with Lunacy for the most part unless there is a really novel way to use it other than as the main floor surface. Which I have to admit would have the potential to be really awesome.

Something fun that you can do while you wait for the game hint(s) is find the event(s) that you are attending in CD-Events up at the top of the page and add that event to your signature by clicking on the Users coming (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/event/detail/4957?) option. (The 'teams coming' option doesn't work yet.)

edit: if you don't see your event listed - look on the left hand side under the events bar. Click on 'events' and that will take you to the pages. Find your event and click on 'details'. That will give you the option to add the event to your signature.

Well I don't think thats a very fair advantage for anyone up north.. Kinda mean to those who aren't used to much of anything but rain.. I heard schools get canceled for just a half inch of snow some places!!! :ahh:

And who doesn't have ice cream in the dead of winter? Maybe Michigan kinda are just used to the snow :D

-Totally fails to keep mind from the game hint and updates Bill's Blog JUST in case-

I don't think the GDC would go there, considering 2009 was as close to a real Ice field as FIRST will probably ever get! I just think that games like that, especially when there is no real way to control yourself, are kinda like watching a 3-4mph wheelchair race. Hockey is great because the players have amazing maneuverability and control. The problem is, it would be very hard to do that with robots (But if there is a FIRST, there is a way).

Good luck and try to stay sane!
