does any one know a good supplier for a rack and pinion set. meaning the sprocket and the rack. i was thinking 80/20 may have something, but I am having a hard time locating it.
McMasterCarr has a variety of rack and pinion combinations. The prices also seem reasonable.

Something else you might consider is using the Gates belt system. All you have to do is design something to clamp onto the belt and it would work very similar to a rack and pinion, but it would probably weigh less. Just a thought.

You can also just drill & countersink holes and run a sprocket in them. (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/mxEYzVjHcfEL-I-d1XlI3g?feat=directlink) :)
