View Full Version : Robot names?

Who's naming their robot this year? Anyone come up with any clever names? :)
You can't name it until it's finished!!
Last year, we couldn't even decide if it was male or female for a while.
after he was finished, we named him Michealangelo partly because he's such a work of art (due to our beautiful custom galvanized chassis and homemade wheels) and partly because one of our mentors Mike was so great the whole season.
The year before that, the robot was named Romar mod6, after our lead programmer Enmar (like Robot Enmar) and mod6 because he was dramatically modified six times.
so it really depends.
Last year, we named our robot Weeble since 'it could wobble but it couldn't fall down'!
However, we usually don't name our bots until they are at least 3/4ths done (I think), and it usually involves some type of unique quality or ability that the robots has.

We usually don't name our robot until it has a defining characteristic. However, a name that has been tossed around a lot lately at base camp has been Dr. Evil (and Mini-Me for the minibot(s)).

We were thinking of naming our bot "princess" but, i think we'll save the names for the end.

We normally don't come up with one until week 5 or later, but this year we pretty much settled on one at Kick-off. Quite fitting for the game, too.

Looks like I'm new to the team never hear that nameable the robots, but we always laugh at the comparisons that people make when we take them at events! Compare our robo 2007 with an equipment that provides the weather 0.0

Our robot is always named MP4 until week 3. MP4 stands for My Pretty Pink Princess Pony.

Our last years was sharkbait, because of a sticker we had on it. It evolved into a chant and everything, none of it was planned haha.

In our team, the privilege of naming the robot goes to our most generous sponsor.
There are going to be so many robots named Eva this year. Calling it right now.
We alternate between male and female robots every year, and it's now established that we're going in alphabetical order. The name also sometimes has something to do with a prominent feature of the year's game, though that's not always the case.
2006 was Balzac (I don't remember the story behind that one)
2007 was Charlotte (after Charlotte, the spider in Charlotte's Web)
2008 was Atlas (after Charles Atlas...I think the idea was lifting heavy trackballs=bodybuilding)
2009 was Diana (the Roman goddess of the moon)
2010 was Erdős (after mathematician Paul Erdős; again, I don't think there was a reason)
So for 2011, we need a female name beginning with F...

Our 2009 robot was named Cthulhu, after the Lovecraftian horror. It did fairly well, making it to the semifinals.
Our 2010 robot was named Admiral Ackbar, after the Rebel commander at the Battle of Endor. It experienced technical difficulties, and did not do particularly well.
Thus, it will be more favorable to name our robot after a fictional cosmological being than after a fictional mortal. We have yet to test the effects of naming the robot after a nonfictional person.
This year, I'm thinking Yog-Sothoth, keeping with the Lovecraftian theme.

If you look on our page (http://www.firstwiki.net/index.php/418) in the FIRST Wiki - and scroll down to the list of robot names, you'll see that we began using names that have the PH in them for Purple Haze. We are LASA Robotics/Purple Haze.
The use of the PH in the names was started innocently enough by one of the team members discussing a part of the robot, saying - "that big flappy thing." From there, the team dubbed the robot, Flappy. I suggested using PH in place of the F and that's how our history of using names with PH in them began. We have some serious Trekkies on the team now and so part of our search for names has now included a nod to Star Trek. PHardos was named after The USS Phardos (NCC-1757) - a Constitution-class Federation heavy cruiser starship of the Achernar-subclass, ordered for construction in the 23rd century, named for the star Phardos. :) This one was a double because the super Trekkie on the team is one of our mentors who teaches ... wait for it - astronomy.
This reminds me... we need to update our page.

We name it based on whatever is so amazing the entire team agrees on it.
Last year we named it Burn Bot because our school TV program did a Halloween episode where our robotics team "created" burn-bot, a robot which made witty comments and made fun of everyone in the school...until it walked so far away from our lab it pulled the power cord out of the socket and died.
This year, we have no idea what we're going to call it, but inspiration will come eventually. :)
Names rarely get decided until after it starts coming together, usually around Week 5. For the most part the names have some significance, and are generally intelligent in nature.
The previous robots were named:
2002 - ARC (Amazing Robotic Cardinal)
2003 - Red Streak
2004 - Red Streak II
2005 - ARCTAN (no real story here)
2006 - MISTT ("Mr. I's Stupid Throwing Thing")
2007 - Sparky (after an unfortunate incident during build ...)
2008 - Ella Vader (Darth's sister)
2009 - Noisy Cricket (after the sound the ball kicker made)
2010 - Calctro (Latin for "I kick")
Can't wait for Week 5 to find out this one!
2007 - Sparky (after an unfortunate incident during build ...)
Ha, our 2009 robot's nickname was Sparky, for the same reason...we now have EXTRA fire extinguishers because of it ;P
2009 our team's robot name was GABEL. Something like gyroscopic...rest of the name. You'd have to ask a veteran who was on the team that year to get the full story. Breakaway's robot was Trigger. She was a friggen' beast. We got that name because we looked up awesome horse names, and the name Trigger sounded pretty awesome and western. (Metal Mustang Robotics -> Horse; Cowboy hats are our speciality)
We vote on a name for our robot annually we even go as far as designing logos for the particular robot (http://kokoed.deviantart.com/#/d2i46rs).
Most of the time the name features an X in it,
This year, Team 1540 held a contest with the lower school (grades 1-5) at Catlin Gabel to help us choose our robot names. After sifting through over 230 submissions, the team decided to name our 2010 competition robot Lightning, and our practice bot Thunder. Each of the students who submitted those names with have their name engraved in the robot.
This is the first year we've tried this. In previous years, we've tried to name our robots in pairs.
(Practice robot name in parentheses)
2010: Pyro (Spy)
2009: Epic (Fail)
2008: Nemo (Dory)
2007: Fowler
2006: Free Ranger
2005: Rocky

Its gonna be "REX 6" this year, since its our sixth year and sixth competition bot. Although we will probably pick a better one, previous ones included "REX 4 the Win" and "REX 5 is Alive!"

MOE votes every year on a robot name, that has MOE in it somehow. It may or may not have anything to do with the game theme. It's getting harder each year to find a good name, but I bet that the students will come through again. Suggestions welcome!

I think I speak for many teams by saying that naming the robot makes building the robot more personal. I think it is also true that we just like naming our robots.

Branding, recognition, and it adds some connection to the mechanical beast you just spent 6 weeks of your life with. Plus it's pretty fun to come up with names for your robot. Some teams even go as far as painting or adding stickers to really give it "life".

How can you do this http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/31492 if the robot doesn't even have a name? :)
http://www.thinkbabynames.com/list/0/F
Can't say I've heard of most of those names, but it's a good list to have XD
Our selection process usually includes everyone on the team being given a chance to suggest a name (and any reason behind it), and then a sub-group (Imagery) makes the final decision.
What I'm thinking of for my suggestion is "Felicity". Check out the economic definition. It fits well with the game.
In economics, utility is a measure of relative satisfaction. Given this measure, one may speak meaningfully of increasing or decreasing utility, and thereby explain economic behavior in terms of attempts to increase one's utility. Utility is often modeled to be affected by consumption of various goods and services, possession of wealth and spending of leisure time.

I also did some asking around today. Atlas, our 2008 bot, was actually named for the Greek Titan, Atlas. He's the one often portrayed lifting a giant sphere/globe. Similar to the trackball from that year.

Last year was one of our only years that we decided not to include "Red" in the name somehow.
2010-The Commander, named for a nickname of a mentor who was moving away
2009-Red Hurricane, named for the helix
2008-Red Dragon, named for a dragon decal on it
2007-Red Rover, ?????
Past there I dont know.

We named our robot McTwist in 2010 year, from a running joke about one of our mentors. 2009 was Orange Force, and 2008 was the Rip City Ape, for reasons we still don't completely understand. Sometimes, our robots (especially in FTC) are named for their mechanical idiosyncrasies. Our 2008 FTC robot was called Squeaky because of its incredible squeaking gearbox. In 2010, we named our robot the Crushinator, for its obvious crushing abilities.

We had a pretty efficient way of naming our robots:
-2005: '05 bot
-2006: Champion bot
-2007: '07 bot
-2008: '08 bot
-2009: '09 bot
-2010: we prefer not to talk about him :D
We had several project names for our robot during 2010 FRC build season. We originally named the robot "The Shark" during development but after an internal naming competition we renamed as WOMBOT. The new name was a combination of Wombat (an Australian marsupial) and Robot.

Most of 176's robots have had to do with our team name, Aces High.
Aces High can be taken two ways. The first representing the flying Aces of WWII, and the second being the poker term Aces High.
Recent robots:
Ace
Ace of Spades
Pokerface (2006, pre-Lady GaGa, I swear  )
The Red Baron
Blackjack
This year, our robot's named Red Baron II.
The robot will carry the theme with red frame pieces and coverings with designs similar to that of the original

The 2009 robot went by the name "Redemption" after our, well, um, apparently the team did put a robot on the field in 2008, contrary to results. Some members called by the name "Mephistopholes" since the 2008 robot was "Dante."
I like looking at our last two years, and this year, as the Redemption Series. The goal of the name is to build the team from the ground up, back to a level of function admiration and respectability.
2010 never was officially christened, but "Ahab" was usually used. We had a pretty killer harpoon kicker (that worked once), and there was some salty language to be had during the sort time it had to be built. It was also a tough, crazy robot. Very overachieving.
2011, our build lead has chosen "Gurren" for the hostbot and "Lagann" for the minibot.
For those who don't know, it comes from the anime Gurren-Lagann, and the reasoning behind its usage can be seen here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfUTihyusSg)

We name our robot after someone who has had a big impact on our team. Sometimes its a mentor, sometimes a person who inspires us. Our team knew that some other robots would look like Dinosaurs, so we thought a dragon was just as cool. Plus since our team is a syndicate this year we thought dragonov (yes I know it's spelled dragunov, but this is so we don't get in trouble with anyone haha).
But when my team goes to nationals, our teams have to meet up, since you guys are our +1000 counterparts. haha

Our bot was named RoboBob 2.0 in 2004. It's Jacki now.
2007: Elevation Station
2008: Force
2009: Force 2
2010: Force 3
2011: Final Force - Minbot: Isaac (as in Newton)
Our robot (Kauaibots, Team 2465) is Thunder Chicken!
We've named our bots since '08, but they're all pretty random. Usually something just catches on during the season.
2011- Mazarine
2011 Minibot- Tagalong
2010- Dory (from Finding Nemo)
2009- The Cookie Monster
2008- Katherine (after our team captain who was the same size and weight as the robot)

2011: XXcelsior (our twentieth robot!)
2010: Bat Robile
2009: Jake Blues
2008: HamTray (long story)
2007: RackStar
2006: Katapult
2005: SkyHook
2004: KatsKlaw
I get confused trying to remember the names of the 1992-2003 robots, so I won't risk getting them wrong here.
We decided pretty early on that the minibot would be Tagalong this year, because it's just too perfect.
Took a while longer to decide on the actual robot name, but after extensive googling she's now Mazarine (after a type of blue butterfly).
Our names follow no pattern whatsoever. So far we've had a cartoon fish, a puppet from Sesame Street, and a team captain. And now a butterfly and a Girl Scout cookie.

This year the students decided to name the robot after a mentor, the robot's name is Bob-O-Matic. The mini bot's name is Mini Kraken.

2011 minibot is now being called "Hamburglar" as the gears ate a mentors finger at Kettering. :ahh:
1075's robots have always been named "Sprocket <number>"
2003 edubot: Sprocket 1 - I believe this one is still in our shop
2003 FRCbot: Sprocket 2 - cannibalized for parts in the 2004 season, reconstructed summer 2004, recannibalized for parts in the 2007 season, I believe frame and drivetrain is still intact, perhaps sans-motors.
2004 competition FRCbot: Sprocket 3 - cannibalized for parts in the 2007-2009 seasons, was used for competition testing of 2006-2008 robots, I believe the frame, drivesystem, and arm remain, but without actuators.
2004 practice drivebase: Sprocket 4 - steelframed chassis to hold our 2004 drive system so that we could code autonomous while Sprocket 3 was in the crate. Frame remains in our shop, but the functional parts were used on Sprocket 3 in competition
2006 FRCbot: Sprocket 5 - completely disassembled. you can find some component systems (swerve modules, ball launcher) lying about our shop, but the frame is long gone, cut up, and re-used into later bots.
2007 FRCbot: Sprocket 6 - I believe this robot is still mostly intact, though it may currently be without drive units. The drive units on Sprockets 5,6,7, and 9 were interchangeable.
2008 competition FRCbot: Sprocket 7 - Completely dismantled, I haven't seen ANYTHING still around the shop that belonged to this robot.
2008-Present Robotic Cart: Sprocket 8 - Still in use, has been upgraded to run a split voltage (12/24V) system using Black Jags to run its drive wheels.
2008 offseason FRCbot: Sprocket 9 (yeah, we did a complete rebuild, it was that bad) - 100% intact. Has been used for competition testing of 2009-2011 robots.
2009 FRCbot: Sprocket 10 - All systems intact, except electrical. cRIO and speed controllers stolen for Sprockets 11-14
2010 practice FRCbot: Sprocket 11 - I haven't seen it for a while, but I believe its still semi-intact. Pieces were stolen to fix Sprocket 12 in the offseason. Probably missing alot of the electrical system to feed Sprockets 13 and 14.
2010 competition FRCbot: Sprocket 12 - 100% intact, used for competition testing Sprocket 14
2011 mecanum drivebase: Sprocket 13 - intact, but I think the electrical board is in Sprocket 14.
2011 competition FRCbot: Sprocket 14 - In the bag, waiting patiently for Waterloo in a couple weeks.
8 years, 14 robots, many of which don't exist anymore.

2056's 2011 entry is named "Unfinished Business"
My guess is that this is an allusion to their 4 losses at Championship with multiple regional winning robots, most recently their 2010 robot, carrying them to elimination in the semi-finals on Einstein.
So far, Unfinished Business is off to an excellent start, winning FLR with 217 and 1518. As far as I understand it, 2011 marks a new era for 2056's drive team. Their drive team has consisted of the same people since 2007, who are now no longer highschool students, and therefore ineligible.

We finally came to an agreement about the name last week at GSR. This year's robot from the Robobees is "The Pollenator" and the mini-bot is "Sting."
Next week, our "home" regional, the Chesapeake Regional! We are excited to bring the Robobee's 10th season robot to the Baltimore Convention Center!

2009: Ganymede - Cup bearer to the gods in Greek mythology. Also the largest of jupiters moons, the largest moon in the solarsystem.
2010: Cerberus - Guardian of the Underworld in Greek mythology. Multiheaded dog whom guards the doorway between the land of the living and dead.
2011: Hermes - Messenger of the gods in Greek mythology. Hermes the swift footed thief whom brought fire from the gods to man.
2011 Minibot: Evil Crouton - An anagram of Crevolution, minibots are evil for being such a pain and yet so simple. "ta mere est une baguette"

Our inaugural robot is named I.A.H.

Acronym
Here.
A meta-joke made by Forrest against all of our other names, and other team's names.
I was going to vote for either "Jag Slayer" or "Time Bandit", as they both have deep meanings. Time Bandit, because our robot is the deadliest catch and stole our freetime, Jag because of out triple-kill on jaguars early on.

1676 Names
2011: Mantisaurus - The claw looks like a mantis, and dinosaur, because the combination of the arm and elevator looks like a dinosaur.

2009: Apollo - Moon themed name for Lunacy

Is it too late to name this years robot LogoMOEtion or LocoMOEtion? :p
2011- The Narwhal, so named because of the "horn" scooping device used to pick up tubes.
Apparently, 910 has named their minibot "Sammy the Snow Squirrel"

Julie
Team 3355
Batbot and Robin
We name it based on whatever is so amazing the entire team agrees on it.
Last year we named it Burn Bot because our school TV program did a Halloween episode where our robotics team "created" burn-bot, a robot which made witty comments and made fun of everyone in the school...until it walked so far away from our lab it pulled the power cord out of the socket and died.
This year, we have no idea what we're going to call it, but inspiration will come eventually. :)

Ice CueBie. A lot of people on our team wanted to name it Frozen Fjord (including me) but Ice Cuebie won. We named our practice bot Frozen Fjord instead though.
2009: GABL (intials of a favorite team member)
While it was the initials of one of our favorite team members it stood for Gyroscope Aligning Balancing Lever :P

we are a rookie team and decided to go with "EPIC 1". next year will be EPIC 2 and so on and so fourth. EPIC stands for "Every Person Is Capable", we went with this because we are a rookie team working out of a woodshop 3 days a week for 3 hours a night and we placed third in our first district match when we went up against 32 vetrean teams and 8 other rookie teams. so EPIC 1 is more than a name for us. and our minibots name is TIMEX like the watch because it has climbed the pole and scored alot but has also fallen from the very top like 4 times and it keeps working haha its a tank!
