Does anyone know whether the human players can pick which shaped tube to feed to the robots or if they have to follow a certain order?

No, the human players decide which ones go in when.

The only restriction is you can't take one from the other human player.

You can give any shape you want; the rules don't forbid or say anything about that (as long as you have one left, each feeder station starts with 3x each shape).
