View Full Version : Mounting a BB 775 to a P60
Hi,
I was wondering if any special tools are needed to connect a BB775 motor to a P60 gearbox.
we are ordering the one with the mounting kit for the 775:

what is the mounting procedure?
is it reversible? (if we fry a motor, can we easily remove the mountings from the fried motor and transfer them to a non-fried motor?)
Thanks,

all you are gonna need is the mounting screws because there both made to fit flush together and for how easy it is depends on the set up because you still have to pull the motor-transmision combo off the hub because the mounting bolts on on front of bane bot transmision
The motor shaft is smooth... how do you add a gear on there?
is it a press fit? do you need a press or can you use a bench vice?

is it a press fit? do you need a press or can you use a bench vice? The gear does need to be press fitted on. I'd recommend an arbor press, and I'd use a large milling vice if I didn't have an arbor press. I wouldn't use a bench vice. If I had a large robust lathe, I'd attempt pressing it with the tailstock if I didn't have anything of the aforementioned tools.
In a real pinch, I suppose you could whip together some sort of frame for an automotive bottle jack, and then you'd have a press of sorts.

I don't have a hard time imagining that some teams are without access to an arbor press, a milling vice, a large lathe, or a bottle jack (and even those teams that could get/have a bottle jack might not have the time or materials to build a frame for it). Would it really be that bad with a bench vise or a really big C-clamp?

The problem with a bench vise, and especially a C-Clamp, is the slop and play in the clamping surfaces. Too much slop makes it easy for the shaft or gear to get out of alignment. This just encourages the application of more force, which can pretty quickly result in a bent shaft.
Since it hasn't been mentioned, you need to make sure you're pushing only against the back part of the shaft when you press this on. If you set it up so you're pushing against any other part of the motor, you're going to destroy bearings, the motor frame, etc.
