View Full Version : How many days have your team been effected by snow storms.

Most teams in New England have had at least 5 days since kickoff with some serious snow. We're getting hit again today and tomorrow with a huge storm coming from the mid west which will make our schools closed again.

Maybe FIRST can consider extending the deadline as they did a few years ago.

Let me count... 3 days so far for us, one tomorrow for sure plus possibly one Thursday so that's 4-5 days missed for a total of about 18 hours of build time (we've made up 3 hours so far). It also does not help that Wednesday/Thursday are the days our transmissions and new CIMs are showing up. In addition to some more 8020 stuff probably showing up then as well.

Is there any way you can edit this post and make it a poll?

0-2
3-5
6-8
9-11
12+

Or something of that nature.

Our team has lost 0 despite an abnormally snowy year, however we are also in Minnesota where you usually only have "cold days" instead of "snow days"

My team has missed every Wednesday so far due to snow except for one....But every other day has been fine...

Define "effected" in this context... we haven't had to cancel any meetings yet, but there have been some abnormally sparse meetings (like last night) due to snow. Fortunately, yesterday was the first actually bad day we've had all year. After all the snow we got in December, I was considering buying a snowmobile to get down to the build space!

I can now add today to the list of snow casualties... school canceled ALL after school activites so no robotics tonight, so the figure for us is now 5-6 days lost and 18-21 build hours.

Looks like AndyMark is being affected which will in return affect everyone, including us on the west coast..

We have just been notified that our shipping providers have suspended all shipping (both Ground and Express services) from Kokomo, Indiana due to extreme weather conditions. While we understand your time constraints within FIRST Robotics and have been working diligently to get your orders out, we will not be able to issue discounts or refunds due to these weather conditions beyond our control.

Our local weather forecast is calling for up to 12" of blowing and drifting snow in the next 24 hours. We will update the home page of our website to let you know when our shipping operations resume.

We appreciate your business and patience in this matter.

We have only lost three or four days, including today. Not too bad for Connecticut, which has been just totally hammered by snow lately.

2 as of today, maybe 3 after tomorrow

Katie_UPS

Milwaukee is getting hammered. The public schools (which UPS runs through) have no school tomorrow and no activities today or tomorrow. That puts us back two days...

... which I found out I REALLY needed ten minutes before the end of the meeting yesterday.

I believe 5 work days for us due to cancellations of after school activities, and we might have another one tomorrow.

So far we have had 2 days off of school, which has not stopped us from meeting but this is a sign of the apocalypse, they never cancel school for our district. We may have more though...

Today makes two. We're getting the very edge of that storm that's supposed to be causing havoc to the east. No snow though, just really cold. Cancelled after school activities yesterday in anticipation of bad weather, and cancelled school altogether today because of "dangerously cold temperatures," which in this case means been below zero all day

0. Officially today was cancelled but we had a few students who still worked on the robot today. We will be working on the robot tomorrow as well.

Trent B

Today you could consider us "effected" in that an Andymark order for our drivetrain got held up in chicago delaying our robot progress.

This year we decided to only work 4 days a week on the robot. Today was the first day we canceled due to weather. Every other snow day the students had we told them to be at the shop at 10am so we could work, given they could get there safely of course.

Lost a half-hour on Monday and our meeting tonight due to the public schools closing. We're also in the boat of not being able to meet when public schools close. Hopefully we can meet on Friday evening and for longer than usual on Saturday.

Today will be the 5th day we have missed. Which is about average for us. I am hopeful that we will be in school tomorrow, since the storm will have left us, but there is still a lot of ice around and the temperature is supposed to drop to single digits, so who knows?

Today is the first day that no one coul dgo work on the robot because of the snow storm. All schools are closed today and maybe tmorrow too. We wanted to get the robot done by friday for programmers to work on it for the last week.

Tech's been out for 2 days so far, but the rest of the week is canceled... weather shows more coming in Sunday and Monday... a possible week and a half to two weeks... :( the entire state of Oklahoma is out of school... is it possible for FIRST to extend deadlines like a few years ago?? I went outside earlier and there is a drift the covers the entire road for a half mile in both directions that's over five feet deep... Tractors cant even get through them... Unless the county grades the roads we're looking at being snowed in for 2 weeks.........

Our team 384, we havent lost any days, but school has been cancled and we still met for our meetings. As for that extension for first, i doubt that would happen, last year we lost about a week, yet no extension, cause if there was an extension all the regionals would be postponed a week, and they cant do that since all the regional events have been booked and set for their respective dates.

It's been rough down here in New Orleans also. Last weekend, almost half the team was wearing long sleeve shirts instead of the normal short sleeves. :)

The weather isnt whats really effecting us....its the road conditions. We've called i believe 3 or 4 meetings now. Of course that doesnt slow us down much because we are a voc. tech school so we work on stuff during the day. there is probably 3-4 feet of standing snow in my yard right now along with 1/2 inch of sheer ice on anything else. i just had to take a hatchet to the roof (not damaging it of course) just to get the ice dams off.

We lost two days week 2. Not great but at least design can be done at home.

Today was our third day this week, tomorrow will be the forth. Loosing for days in week four hurts.

So far we've lost 2 days of work. Which, although they don't seem much in comparison to the North East, are pretty significant to us because we've been putting everything together to make sure it all works.

This day we lost today (maybe one tomorrow) did not really affect us because we were running out of things to do, we are waiting on new cims, new banebots transmissions and one of our seemingly endless orders from 8020 because we never seem to order enough (a lesson learned for next year, if we stick with 8020, order huge amounts before build season). Anyway this is day 5 that we lost with maybe day 6 tomorrow.

2 days going on 3 here. Might be a fourth but I doubt it cause my school district wouldn't cancel school 3 days in a row...

For those doing the math we canceled the meeting for the night the snow apocalypse hit even tho we had school that day.

We've only lost two days due to snow. School closures are extremely rare in the Niagara Region. We'll usually be in school when our friends across the river are at home.

I believe we are up to 5 days missed so far, but thankfully these days have overlapped machining time and shipping time for parts so we're really only 2 or 3 days behind.

Boston Public Schools has had 5 snowdays and we had at least 3 days that all after school activates canceled...

The problem with BPS is that we can't work at school on the weekends. So for us, we have no off-campus worksite. So these snow days really suck. =(

Frenchie461
03-02-2011, 13:17
461 lost 2 days of school due to snow, but we held a meeting on one of them anyway, so the snow day wasn't a total waste of time.

our team having missed 5 days (15 hours) and only made up 1 day (3 hours) worth of build time, have decided that will be staying from right after school on Friday and we will start early Sunday which will make up 3 more days (9 hours) worth of time so we will only be behind one day.

Team 1245 in Colorado had 2 cold days (We're not used to negative teens and twenties...). While I can't say we NEED the extra time, it never, EVER hurts to have a buffer.

We've probably missed 5-7 days due to afterschool cancellations and snow days. I'm pretty sure our team is trying to extend hours now because of it.
