All,
It's time to start thinking about the awesome abstract that you are going to submit for the Championship Conference Presentations. Who's in? :) Seriously. Please think about submitting an abstract/topic. If you have any questions, please let me know; I'll be glad to help you in any way.
Technical, Chairman's, Teamwork, Business Plan, 20 Years(!) - FRC, FTC, FLL - many areas/many topics to be considered. What would you like to contribute towards making this year's Conference topics the best ever?!
Here's the info for you: "2011 FIRST Robotics Conference- Call for Proposals: FIRST is seeking presentation proposals for the eighth annual FIRST Robotics Conference. 45-minute workshops on topics of interest to FIRST Robotics (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams, coaches, mentors, students and prospective leaders will be accepted. Deadline to submit is February 11th, 2011. For full details, please visit: http://usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/content.aspx?id=18959."
Please consider submitting a proposal and if you have questions or doubts and need a sounding board, if I can't help, I'll find someone who can.

I wish these conferences could happen on Wed, before we actually compete.
I'd love to do one of these, if accepted, on sustainability and how we've been able to get lots of funding through innovative ways.
I'm in the pits or on the field always, which makes it tough to either present or attend and hear others.

Glenn,
We had part of Wednesday available last year. The time slots on Wednesday were in huge demand but we worked with the presenters and the scheduling as best we could. We should have the same thing available this year. I think we'll have Wednesdays from 4 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, go for it. When you submit it, let us know the constraints that you are facing. All teams have to deal with scheduling constraints but, as I said, we try to work with the presenter(s).

A little bump as we move into saying good-bye to the FRC robots for a bit. :)
The deadline for submitting a proposal has been extended to March 1. After you've had a little bit of rest before the competition season begins, please consider submitting a proposal on a topic of interest to you. This includes FTC and FLL, too. We've received some submissions and would love to receive more.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.
Thank you,
Jane
Can students give Presentations?
My friend and I were thinking of giving a presentation on the cross benefits of FRC students coaching and mentoring FLL teams but we weren't sure if we would be allowed to present.
Thanks

Hannah-
Not only are students allowed to present, they are very highly encouraged to do so! We think it's a fantastic opportunity for students to share their knowledge and to get experience presenting (not to mention an excellent resume builder).
We would welcome a proposal from you or any other students (in any program) for the Conference.
Thanks!
Colleen

One last bump before the deadline.
If you are still considering submitting a proposal for the Championship Conference presentations, please do. The deadline for submitting is tomorrow, March 1, 2011.
Thanks to everyone who has submitted.

I've thought about submitting , but I'm not sure if I'll be there, so it'll have to wait another year.

Cyber Blue has done about 6 student / mentor led presentations since 2006. They have all been positive experiences and well received. FIRST has been very open to this option.
Make sure you do a good write up on what you are going to present, and maybe consider adding a mentor into the mix.

You definitely can, you just need to plan for it ahead of time. Our team did a presentation on Press Releases last year and are doing it again this year! :D It's a lot of fun. :)
While we are on the topic, we submitting an abstract again for a panel discussion entitled:
Today’s Girls in Tomorrow’s Workplace – A Panel Discussion on Careers in Science, Engineering, & Technology
It was very successful last year (over 100 girls attended, and we could have gone on for another full hour).
Assuming we are accepted, we are looking for panelists. Last year we drew mainly from the judges. If you could help us out let me know. We would really like to this year include one or two younger females, fairly new to industry, as well as, let's call them women who are "established" in their careers. Send me a PM if you are interested.
We requested a Thursday PM slot, hopefully at 4:00 (because the judges have their dinner at 6PM aand are busy on Friday)
Today is the deadline to submit! If you've been thinking it over write up a proposal and send it in! Remember it doesn't have to be only FRC, FTC & FLL teams and mentors are more than welcome to present!!!! I can't wait to see them all in St Louis!
Any updates on when these will be posted?
I have been encouraging teams to go, and especially team members attending the CMP where their team is not competing.
Thanks.

My team submitted an abstract and we received the e-mail that we were approved about two weeks ago. We were sent a tentative schedule but I don't know when the finalized schedules will be published.

Thanks for asking, Jenny. Word is that there are still a few last sessions to be confirmed. A list of the presentations should be posted in the next day or two and the schedule may be out by the end of the week.
That's the best information that I can provide at the moment. Thank you for your patience in waiting for the lists and schedule. Stay tuned.

I always get confused, but do these include the Mechanical Design presentations and panels with guests from Team IFI, 469, 118..etc.?
Are those planned/posted anywhere?

There are technical and nontechnical conference presentations and in the past years, there have been panel discussions. Often, after the list is posted, the presenters will create a thread here in CD about their topic.

All,
Thank you for your awesome patience. The information (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/firstplace/content.aspx?id=19359) has been posted on the FIRST website. Please check it out and plan to purchase your tickets for the conference presentations! You really don't want to miss this opportunity.
Jane
Anyone have any idea whether WPI will be archiving any of these sessions?

Many (most) were videotaped and will be placed on the FIRST website. Also, presenters have been asked to submit their presentations to be placed there as well.

Thanks Chris. I'll give it a couple of weeks and then start asking. It would be great to be able to use these as part of local training workshops. Do you know where on the FIRST site the links are usually stored? I think I found 2009, but nothing for 2010.

The presenters may need a little bit of time to recover from the Championship event and to get their materials, such as slides, submitted for archival purposes. It's always good to bring these opportunities to the attention of the CD community but sometimes, wants just take a little bit of time.

Hi Jane,
Got it. Just trying to figure out what is realistic re: expectations. Summer? Fall? Should we be thinking of ways to bribe Karthik to come to Maryland?

It's my understanding that the presenters were told they had a couple of months to get presentation materials in. So... that would make it... mid-summer?

Not quite as amusing as the live show, but Karthik's presentation (actually it looks like a slightly older but nearly identical version) is available on the 1114 website (http://www.simbotics.org/resources/workshops) under "Strategy".

Good to know these presentations will be up on the internet for me to find, adjust, and preach/practice with my team.
Will there be any kind of paywall? I know you had to pay to get in the conference (which I still find perplexing).
The presentations will be linked from FIRST Place: http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/firstplace/content.aspx?id=840 once the presenters send them to FIRST to compile. (I'm one of the ones who hasn't found the time to do so yet! :ahh: )

Jenny, you should always be thinking of ways to bribe me!
Any updates on where these can be found?
And many thanks to all who have posted in this thread with the links: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=87192
There is some very useful information here.
I asked FIRST Place for any updates. I am posting here in case anyone else was looking for these.
This was the response:
"To be honest with you, I can’t give you a detailed timeline. We are working through some server space issues. Again – I can give you an updated link when they go up, but as of right now, I can’t be sure when that will be. "
