A video is worth a thousand pictures, thus worth a million words :D

Care to expound? Would be appreciated.
Thanx,

Maybe you could put some sort of ratcheting mechanism in there. http://www.vexrobotics.com/276-1546.html might be a good option.

Thought of something like that. Didn't want to stop it hard enought to make the bot fall off the pole though (kinda would defeat the purpose :) ).

Our team's minibot does a very similar thing on purpose at about 1:48 in the video above.
Ours is built differently, but could you explain how you got the motors to slowly roll? Ours prefers to zoom down.

Ours also always comes down. Shorted the motors in series off the "normally open" on the limit switch.

I like this one the best. Hicups a little in the beginning before grabing. If 4.48 is a slow run for us I will take it.
David what is your gear ratio?????

Am I supposed to know my gear ratio  ? To be honest, I actually don't know all of that. I just built it :) . It uses the largest tetrix gears in the FTC mini kit, and they go to the smallest gears mounted on the wheels.

Okay based on that.....I am assuming you are using either a limit switch or household light swtich to start/stop your minibot when it hits the top. Take whatever side you have left either normally open/normally closed output (depends on your design) and short that across your motors in series and you will get something similar to our result
