It's that time.
If you could, please post the Alliance Selections from the Regional competitions.
I don't have a 1114 shirt to offer those with multiple posts. ;)

Week 1 ...
Nice wrap-up on Week 1, David!
Thanks to everyone for contributing... til next week.
Is there value in recording the seeding orders? The top eight might have picked alliance partners from the top too, so the starting order of the round might be significant. i was reminded of this at the FTC alliance selection I saw yesterday.

The initial seeding order is accessible in the data available from FIRST. The order teams were picked in is not, hence the need to record it if people want access to it.

Although I feel like a talkshow host for quoting myself, let me refer you to my post.
Alliance selections are as follows
33, 2137, 1
3536, 1322, 470
894, 27, 3568
70, 1504, 1188
302, 2337, 3535
2604, 51, 703
1243, 494, 1684
3322, 67, 326
One tip-off, which should be pretty clear to anybody who was watching the event, is that 27 and 703 were both far too good not to make the first round of picks.
I do realize that you're probably just quoting what you've heard, so no worries. :)

I do believe your own quote has 27 being the 3rd alliance's 1st pick.
I do believe your own quote has 27 being the 3rd alliance's 1st pick.
Yes, this is correct. 33 seeded first and picked second seed 2137. Third seed 3536 got the next pick and took 1322. Then, 894 picked 27. No teams declined to be picked during the entire process.
If you're a little confused by who got which seed (which is understandable considering that 302 is displayed as having played 11 matches, while everybody else is at 12) you can refer to the official page (http://www2.usfirst.org/2011comp/events/GG/rankings.html).

Respectfully offered by team #3536 as the reasoning behind our pick. We were humbled to be competing with the likes of Rush 27. We had considered them very closely. Our team voted to unannamously to invite team #1322 with a first round pick.
We felt strongly that it was the least we could do in recognition of that teams support. They were there for us many times during a very tough build season.
We believed strongly that if we were not given the honor to be asked by either the Killer Bees or Torq in which we would have humbly accepted.
As a rookie team we should remain Gracious and honor the team that had been instramental in getting us to the event.
We are small but mighty.....In a forest of Giants. We will earn our dues!
All of the competitors there were awesome to us. We hope to earn all of your teams respect because you all truely have ours.

Our team was considing picking 3536 as one of our partners, but us dropping down to 7th seed then up to 5th seed didnt allow that seeing as u guys were second. I was very impressed by what you guys did and have seen that you guys stayed with what you guys had said at the one strategy meeting that i cant seem to remember where it was held

Thanks Brian,
302 was on our list as well, picking was a huge stress for us. We are going to Waterford and scout to practice the scouting picking cycle. As rookies we watched matches closely for matching play strategy. But the end game of alliance picking was serious chess play that we want to practice. We want to learn and be better prepared for alliance if we are fortunate to be anywhere close to that again.
We hope 302 would still consider us if it ever comes up again. We look forward to the next time we meet either together or against. By the way 3536 saw you at Baker College Strategy meeting. Thanks for acknowledging what we said at Baker. Not everyone there agreed with our strategy if you remember. It was hard to hear some of the comments that challenged it. We went back and scrubbed the game play to rationalize the criticism. It was hard but we decided to stick with what we said were going to do.
We feel stongly that we are a team that stands by our words.

If that strategy was to focus on a consistent minibot rather than a manipulator, I would say you were rather justified. 2nd Alliance Captain as a rookie is not too bad at all:) .

Thanks Norman.
The Bees are pretty incredible. To hear from your team on our behalf is an honor! We really respect what you guys do!! Those bots you brought are true cool no doubt.
Tell Jim "the Ninja" we took his advice and have a kid are tossing tubes everyday now. We will be ready if we get another chance to play the role with you guys again.
Yes we said strong agile Defensive bot with a Minibot. Having a good time playing the role. Good luck next round to all on the bees.

My apologies, updates for Kettering were extremely sporadic, with the final qualification results not even posted until after the competition was over. I mainly made sure teams were listed on the right alliances but highly doubted 27 was actually a 3rd round pick.
It looks like FIM's website now has posted its own list of alliance picks for Kettering (http://www.firstinmichigan.org/FRC_2011/Kettering_FRC/Eliminations_Results.pdf) and TC (http://www.firstinmichigan.org/FRC_2011/TraverseCity_FRC/Eliminations_Results.pdf). From my cursory glance, it seems to line up with what's been posted here already.

Oh ya that is right, sorry for the confusion. I am struggling for what to call this new regional. Since I generate OPRs for all regionals I am most familiar with the 3 or 2 letter FIRST abbreviation for and often default to it. Lake Superior is DMN since it is held in Duluth, MN. This is why when I was trying to record Waterford quickly after the selection, I called it OC1. I know OC is for Oakland County, but why 1  All other abbreviations use 2 (mn, on, wa). Is it because it is not held on the same week as OC (Troy)?

Not going to lie, after 177 picked 175, I was really hoping that everyone else would somehow forget to pick 176 so that 175, 176, and 177 could pair up. Because it would amuse me.

I hope so too... 2612 is a good team, making finals at Waterford this year and putting up a good fight in the QFs at Niles. Last year they were finalists at Cass Tech and MSC and were eliminated by 469 at every single event they attended.
Perhaps, since they already went to two districts, they wanted to give other teams a chance to get points for MSC... or maybe there was something wrong with their robot.

SVR has the most messed up alliance selections I have ever seen.
Agreed. Declining to be alliance captains...? And like 4 declines.
1) 254 1538 751
2) 1323 1868 604
3) 2141* 256 701
4) 670** 846 1351
5) 971 295 1622
6) 2473 192 1280
7) 2159*** 100 766
8) 2456 2035 675
*2141 declined by 670, 971
**670 tries to invite 971, in violation of alliance selection rules
***2159 tries to decline alliance captain position, has a "change of heart," tries to pick 2456, declined, chooses 100 instead.

Anyone know why he declined to be captain? Or why everyone declined to #3? Was it just lack of preparation, or was it something about their robot?

This year's SVR seemed messed up in general. Some historically great teams were ranked near the bottom, while some newer teams took higher rankings (congrats to them!). Some things never change, though; the Poofs are, as usual, undefeated.

I heard a "we broke" in the webcast. #3 was declined because they arguably were carried into that seed. 971 declined because they were performing at a level this morning where they should have been selected by 1323. Since that didn't happen, they chose to make their own alliance.
The alliance selections at Seattle Cascade were even more messed up... lots of teams didn't know the rules, and one team even tried to invite themselves.

Poor girl, she was just a rookie, and she had no idea what was going on. She had gotten her short list of teams to pick from another team, and the other team had accidentally forgotten to remove her teams name from the list. So she just went right on down the list....
I really hope the laughter doesnt color her opinion of FIRST for the worse after this.

As a note, 971 declined before being notified of the alliance selection rules. Just one more thing to convolute this selection even more!

I have to agree. 254+971 would probably blow everyone out of the water. But considering 971 lost three of their qualification matches, the real #2 alliance wasn't a bad one, either.

I was actually talking about 1323 and 971 together but I think by the end of qualifications 971 was playing like the second best robot at the event. They were definitely shaky early on but that's to be expected with the first regional.

I'm sorry - yes, you were referring to 1323 and 971. But, my original point was that none of the SVR selections were "laughable." Sure, some may make you (and I) question the captains' intentions, but, in the end, they were all strong alliances. I was surprised that some teams made a comeback and performed well in the QF/SF.
(I think our posts belong on the SVR thread; we're hijacking this one. Apologies to those who are reading this but have come here for actually useful info.)

Not to offend, but please do realize that in the very first match of the Silicon Valley Regional 971 was up against 254.

1726 swapped for 2057 for semis. No declines.
This is exactly what happened. I talked to 2612 after the selections and they said that they wanted to give other teams a chance to gain points because they already had enough. It was an extremely gracious move on their part and should be commended.

Team 1528 has worked a lot with 2612 at this event. Even when we were the 3rd seed, they told us that they were not going to participate in the eliminations because they didn't feel right taking points away from others. I thaught this was very nice of them and I was extremely disappointed to hear that they were boo'd for this.
This is a perfect example of why you should not judge someone before you know their story. I give great respect to 2612 (WMD) for them not worry about getting trophies and allowing others to get much needed points. I wish others would look at them and follow in their footsteps when they go to their third event.
SVR selections were pretty laughable. It would have been interesting to see 1323 and 971 against 254 and 1538. I think they at least could give the poofs a better challenge.
1323 knew that their strength was in tube scoring and was looking for a 1st pick with a consistently strong minibot. I'll be the first to admit that 971 is a better hanger than us (although expect that gap to be closed by Championships) but our minibot was probably the 2nd or 3rd at the competition (up there with 2456 and 254).
And I think we gave the Poofs a run for their money.... Especially because they were not expecting our defensive strategy. Their scout captain sent me a text saying "What are you doing?" in the middle of the first match because they were expecting something completely different and it took them a while to respond.

I'm surprised that no one posted the Buckeye Regional alliance selection results. They had two webcasts running (Team 291 and NASA/Team 964 streams - Thanks!).
Buckeye Regional
1) 781-1126-1241 (F)

7) 2172-3494-3201 (Q)
8) 3496-279-291 (Q)
The progression of the eliminations at Buckeye is similar to that of Las Vegas' with the exception of alliance #2 winning the regional. It ended up being a typical #1 vs #2 powerhouse final.

There are 8 alliances in both of those divisions who want to win. ;)

Haha true :p
Our drive team was talking about perfect alliances before the selections in Galileo, and 254 - 111 - 973 was the exact alliance that we felt was the best possible alliance that was realistically possible. So it was kind of hilarious when, having missed the alliance selection while at inspection, we realized that we were going to be paired against that exact alliance in the quarterfinals. It was really, really cool to play against them. All three of those robots and teams are just insanely good. Everybody knows that 254-111 is an amazing duo, but adding 973's sick minibot and defense really pushed them over the top.
