MENTOR ROBOT

Like last year, we will have a robot that is solely for the mentors. It will be in the qualification rounds just like any other robot. Mentors will be able to be a part of the drive team for an individual match. Here is your chance to show your team what you can do. Find a match where the mentor robot is on the same alliance as your team, or even better find a match where you square off against your team.

Sign ups will be the morning of our event.

What will be the mentor robot? We have a clone robot that we can provide for that if I do manage to convince my teacher for us to go this year. Should know if we are going or not by the end of the championship.

Last year we used FRC230's practice robot, but as the self proclaimed FRC666 team captain I am open to suggestions.

For the mentor robot we will be going with team 230's back up robot again this year. The tormentors are back in action.

Also like past years we will be looking for some more back up bots to be loaned out for the day. We will try and match up pre rookie teams with a robot and a team that could guide them for the day.

Last year we had teams from
Waterbury - turned into 3525 Nuts and Bolts of Fury
E.C.Goodwin tech - turned into 3718 JunkYard Battalion

So if you have a second robot and are willing to 'mentor' a per rookie team for the day let me know
rcormier@wolcottps.org

or if you know a school that might want to come and be a team for a day let me know.

Pre Rookie teams are free

Also just to say it. Our elimination rounds are Round Robin where you have to lose twice to be eliminated but when you lose you go into a loser bracket instead of facing the same opponent twice in a row.

We started this in our first year because we had a small number of teams and needed to be creative in how we run elimination rounds. We quickly found we really enjoy this method as every alliance at least gets to go against two different opponents.

To be fair other invitationals have used this format and I believe Mayhem at the Merrimack was the first (that I know of)

That sounds more like double elimination rather than Round Robin?

The Aluminati are looking into going to this, since it looks very rookie-friendly. We're looking for good chances for our drivers to get experience, and this looks like a great place to do so. ^_^

I'll be hosting a NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) meeting at 10:00 a.m. (room TBD). NEMO provides support to adult mentors who deal with all the non-technical things on a team like team organization, fundraising, teambuilding, travel planning, etc. The meeting is open to all adult and college-age mentors from any FIRST team, regardless if you are competing at WIWI. Please let your mentors know!

Here is our Lunch Time game

Memory Madness!!
About the Game: This game will be played on the 2011 Logomotion field with the triangular, circular, and square tubes (including the ubertubes). It will be played during the break for lunch. Teams of three players each will be formed prior to the game, and will compete to proceed to the next round. The number of teams will be limited, so players are encouraged to sign up early.
Gameplay:
• Teams of three will gather on the field at the time of their match, and tubes will be scattered all over the field.
• Teams will then be shown a 3x6 grid (on a piece of paper) that they will have to recreate on the racks using the tubes. The teams will be given 10 seconds to look at the grid
• A 50 second period will follow this immediately where the teams will attempt to hang as many pieces as they can. When fifty seconds has expired, teams will clear the field and the racks will be judged.
• A team can declare that they are “finished” and all gather in one of the feeding stations at the opposite end of the field (inside of the field, not where the human player typically stands). Once all three team members are in that feeding station, the members must ALL dance the chicken dance to signify they are finished. This will affect scoring in the result of a tie.
• The winning team will advance to the next round; the losing team is eliminated
Scoring:
• Teams will receive 2 points for each tube that is correctly hung.
• A complete row of tubes that are correct (a 1x6 row) will grant that team a bonus 5 points.
• Any incorrect tube will result in a deduction of 1 point each.
• If a tie occurs, the first team that is “finished” and has danced in their feeding zone will win the match. If neither team has declared themselves finished, the team with the fewest number of deductions will be given the points. If there is still a tie after this, the match will be decided by the referees.
• Points will be added together at the end of the match and the team with the most points wins
Additional Rules: If any of the following rules are broken, it will result in a disqualification for that team
• ABSOLUTELY NO PHYSICAL CONTACT
• No deliberate popping of tubes
• No knocking tubes off of the opposing team’s rack
• No hanging tubes after time has been called
• No hoarding tubes

Something new we are trying out at the WIWI

Guest Anounncer

Ever wanted to see if you have what it takes to announce a FIRST FRC match? Well here is your chance

Every 5th match we will have a guest announcer. Sign ups will be at the check in table. The guest announce will work with Peter Moore who did some of the announcing at the Connecticut Regional.

We are hoping people look at this as a fun way to increase team involvment. We do not expect anyone to walk on and be a pro announcer. So sign up, have fun, and make some mistakes

After running at BattleCry The Aluminum Falcons are looking forward to WIWI. Hopefully we have our own minibot running again by then or we'll be looking for some help from our friends.

The mentor robot and guest announcer are cool options for an offseason, perhaps i'll try my hand at it.

I hope you do. Both options only work if people are willing to give it a shot. So I hope we have some people step up and try them out

So every year we make our own awards. Some years they have been incredible, some years they were great on paper and not so great once when fully constructed. I think this year's award is one of our best.

Also please remember the tornado victims in Massachusetts. Rosie Robotics passed on to Team Max the collection bucket we had out at Beantown Blitz last weekeknd asking for monetary donations. Rosie will be donating the proceeds to the Pioneer Valley Red Cross for the tornado victims.

And yes, there were some FIRST teams mentors, students and families effected.

Thank you for your support.

Well field is set, up, and we're ready to go. Thanks to all our set-up volunteers for getting everything together. Special thanks to Jacob Komar and his assistant Oliver (our FTA and FTAA respectably) for coming out and setting up the electronics.

Will there be a webcast? I didn't see anything about one on the webpage :( .

The Aluminum Falcons, FIRST Team 2168, would like to thank 1071 for again hosting a well run offseason event.

Also thanks to 228 for again bringing some great food.

It was alot of fun seeing our rookie drivers take the sticks on the field for the first time, our kids always impress me. Being able to run the 666 robot was alot of fun as well, its a shame the arm was broken I would have liked to have put up some tubes instead of just rocking some defence... Perhaps next year put together some mentor matches during lunch allowing the mentors to drive their own teams robots?

Well it's been another year and a fantastic event once again. I think this is by far the best WIWI to date, and there's a lot of people to thank for this.

First off, big big big thanks to Jacob Komar, and his assistant, Oliver Graff, for coming down and doing their thing as FTA and FTAA. Their knowledge in keeping the field running, and allowing us to have full electronics this year.

Thanks to Mike M. for coming down also and helping keep things going.

To Jack - It wouldn't be WIWI without you. As always thanks for all you and the Mrs. do for WIWI and FIRST in general.

Thanks again for 228 for bringing down the great food.

Finally to 1071 and any other volunteers we had - it was an awesome time, and all I can say is I can't wait to do it all over again next year.

Congratulations to all the teams who won the awards throughout the day. I know from discussing with the judges they had some hard choices but they enjoyed doing it. It was great to hand you these awesome trophies.

Congrats to 178, 716, and 558 for winning. You had an admirable performance during eliminations and you did a great job.

Lastly as I said in opening, thanks to all the teams for coming and making this event what it is. It wouldn't be WIWI without you guys.

Hope to see everyone next year!

I have to agree out of the 3 Wolcott Invitationals I've been to this had to have been the best one. Thanks for Rob for allowing me to come on over to help run the event with everyone. Food was awesome and everything. Another thanks goes out to Jacob for setting up the Field Electronics... def. made all of those who were help running the event jobs much smoother. As well as Jacob's quick troubleshooting to keep all the matches on schedule... I don't think I ever ran ahead of schedule in an off-season before =)...

Major thanks goes to 1071 and 228 for all their hard work as well as the sponsors who helped fund the event =)... Will def. be back next year if I'm wanted just promise me to have a full field setup that's all lol.

On behalf on team 558, I want to thank everyone involved with organizing this event, which our students enjoy attending each year. To Team Max, 1071, you have set up an event which is a pleasure to compete in. The addition of the FTA this year was a welcome one. To GUS, team 228, as always the food was fantastic.

To our alliance partners: 716, you have been a team we've enjoyed playing with many times, and this was no exception. We hope to work with you many times in the future. 178, I personally, have admired your team from afar for many years. Your Dream FIRST program, and all do for your community, are admirable. I am sure that a Chairman's Award is in your immediate future. We've never really had the opportunity to work with you before in competition, and are so glad that we did on Saturday. You were a great partner, and we look forward to working with you again.

230, 3125 and 2064: It was a hard fought final match, and I really thought we were going to have to go one more! Your alliance was strong, and that made it all the more fun!

Finally, to our students, especially our graduating senior and Dean's List Finalist Rohit Grover: we let you guys run the show on this one, and you did us proud. You did your own coaching for the first time for an entire competition, and you made mature, reasoned decisions in the heat of battle. You did your own scouting and decided based on that data (with only minimal input from us mentors) who to select as your alliance partners for the elmination rounds. Again, you had sound reasons for your decisions, and your hard work and effort paid off. We could not be prouder of you. And Rohit, you will be sorely missed next year. Best of luck at Southern CT State University! We are looking forward to having you come back as a mentor next year. Maybe it'll be you we see as coach at the regionals in 2012!:)
