I am just curious, what is the youngest team you have ever seen win a RCA?

Team 3242, 2nd year, won the Florida RCA.

Was surprised to hear that 2010 was their rookie year as I watched the award ceremonies.

Does anyone know if they are the first team to win a Regional Chairman Award in their 2nd year?

51 won the CCA several years before their rookie year...

My question now is... At these regionals, were there any teams that were much older (say, two or three digits) that were competing as well?

Yes.

Team 1714 won the RCA in 2008, their third year, competing against low numbered teams like 93, 269, and 537.

Long time status helps in that you've sustained yourselves and done what you've done for a long time, but young teams can and will win the award.

This year we didn't compete for the RCA because we simply didn't do anything that we thought particularly noteworthy and because we needed a year off.

2008, silly. :P

I know, but what I said still stands for this year.

EDIT: Wait a minute... I think I just confused myself...

Huh?

Yeah, they won the Championship Chairman's Award in 1997, but the first year 51 was a team number was 2010. :p

(Spoiler: They won it as Team 47, Chief Delphi. After the 2009 season, teams 47 and 65 merged into team 51, the Wings of Fire, but were allowed to keep their past accolades including 47's CCA and 65's Championship Win)

I don't think Basel's post is really doing it justice.

Team 47 (Chief Delphi) won the Chairman's Award in their second year, 1997.
Not a regional chairman's, those didn't exist then. But the big shabang.

They are now known as team 51, after merging with 65 when their schools merged. That's where the whole "winning before their rookie year" thing came from.

I LOL'ed.
47/51 have been our buddies for a while. Personally I was hoping that they would win a rookie award last year. tehehe

For the sake of technical correctness, I may have been wrong. From '92 to '96, teams had variable team numbers, and teams may have chosen 51 as a number. However, after team numbers were made permanent, there was no Team 51 until 2010.

There seems to be a small proliferation of new-but-not-rookie teams, from 51 to teams like 244 and 288 (I think 216 came first?).

Wasn't 216 the original and split into three teams, 216, 244, and 288?

I'm pretty sure 70 and 494 have a similar story.

I keep expecting someone to bring up the lone rookie team who's won the Chairman's Award...

191, who won it the year that everyone was a rookie? And the only team to win THE Chairman's Award TWICE?

On the RoboDawgs, I believe you are correct. One came first - I think it was 216 - and they split into the three.

494 was the original Martians team. 70 was a GMI-sponsored team, but eventually they were going to go under. Indeed, they did, but they allowed 494 to take the number and the team. That's why the lower-numbered team is the More Martians.

And yes, 191 did win the CCA twice, as rookies and again as a third-year team. They were the only rookies to win a Chairman's Award of any sort, because rookies were no longer allowed to submit before there ever were RCAs.

Pretty much impossible, given the rules (assuming that they've been roughly the same since the dawn of time):

Because the Chairman’s Award recognizes sustained excellence and impact, not just a one
year team effort, it is not possible for a first-year (rookie) team to receive this honor. However,
FIRST invites and encourage rookies to develop a Chairman’s Award submission which may
be evaluated by the judges in the Pit who are determining the winner of the Rookie All-Star
Award.

You also can't win the CCA twice, but the same team did that as well.

Team 1108 Panther Robotics won the Regional Chairman's Award their 2nd year at Lone Star in 2004. There were many veteran teams that year at Lone Star because that was before Dallas, San Antonio, Oklahoma, and Bayou so Lone Star was the home regional for many great south central teams.

They also were the #1 seed, Rookie All-Star and Regional Champions at Lone Star and Rookie All-Star at Championship their Rookie Year in 2003. (They are great team and it was awesome to be on that alliance my freshman year)

1108 should come back to Houston some time, we miss you.

Because team 191 won the Championship Chairman's Award twice back at 1992 and the year or two after, and because current Chairman's Award criteria prohibit rookie teams from running it, it would be logical to conclude that the criteria for the award has changed at least once.

Thanks Allen, Team 1108 won its 6th Regional Chairman's Award at the Oklahoma Regional.

BTW, Lee Scherman is mentoring Team 3172 Salina Central Robotics Horsepower. They won Rookie All Star last year and the Greater Kansas City RCA this year.

As in the quote below me, there was a rule change

Because team 191 won the Championship Chairman's Award twice back at 1992 and the year or two after, and because current Chairman's Award criteria prohibit rookie teams from running it, it would be logical to conclude that the criteria for the award has changed at least once.

Hence why I said "assuming the rules have been the same since the dawn of time". :)

If there was a chairman's award the first year of competition, then a rookie HAS won it!

Actually, you can now...

I'm 85% confident that HoF teams from more than 5 years ago can win RCAs, DCAs, and possibly a MCA (SCA?), but not another CCA. I could be wrong, however.

Anyway, as stated 191 won the CCA as a rookie when they were all rookies, and again in 1994. So yeah, that'd go under the rules having changed.

This year we didn't compete for the RCA because we simply didn't do anything that we thought particularly noteworthy and because we needed a year off.

I can assure you that you do enough to be a Chairman's contender and continue to do so every year. I can depend on you whenever you are at an event to help make sure that event does not fail. When 93 is present, I can breathe easier. I know you do a lot for your community as well. Never give up, never surrender!
