Hello people of CD, I am doing an experiment and would like to know what the most popular genre of music is. Please take some time and vote, or post your answer if it does not appear on the list.

Thank you,
Newo95

Heavy Metal.

How does alternative [rock] get its own section, but the genre it is derived from (punk rock) not get its own section?

I'm pretty big into Indie Pop. Saying I like Indie Rock is a bit too broad of a term, as I'm not really into most of the more post-rock stuff as much as other indie music.

Favorite bands might make a more descriptive thread.

Classic Rock

Although a discussion could last forever on the subject of one birthing the other.

"Classic" Rock (Queen is the best band of all time. OF ALL TIME.) like Queen, Styx, Kansas, Boston, Rush, etc
More recently, I've started enjoying some relatively obscure music - ALL CAPS's stuff, some Wrock, lots of chiptune, etc.

Classic Rock = radio format
Classic Rock != genre
Indie = type of label
Indie != genre

I consider "classic rock" a different genre than "modern rock", because they sound and feel different to me. And I was using indie to mean more like "obscure", since that's how many people I know use it.

Except "classic rock" comprises of multiple genres of rock that sound and feel different from one another. AC/DC and the Beatles don't sound much alike. Pink Floyd isn't the same style of music as the Sex Pistols. "Classic rock" is a homogenization of several distinct musical genres that all survive to this day, albeit sometimes in evolved forms.

And there are still plenty of bands who play in "classic rock" styles. There are the rather obvious ones, like Wolfmother, Jet, The Black Keys, and Airbourne. And then there are many lesser known choices, usually on indie labels. Stuff like Witchcraft, Monster Magnet, Gov't Mule, Backwoods Payback, Year Long Disaster, Earthless, etc.

"Indie" is another term that has been taken to hell and back. The usage has been so stretched that it really doesn't have any meaning anymore in terms of describing music (and even when it did, it still described multiple genres, as indie-pop isn't the same as indie-folk isn't the same as indie-rock, etc) It's still valid to mean that a band is on an independent label, but that's about it. I'd rather just describe a band with a genre that actually fits them (lo-fi pop often being a valid substitute for much of the music described as indie-pop, for example).

For me, Indie Synthpop means "I like synthpop but if you say I should listen to Owl City I will get very angry at you."

I don't think indie is a particularly good genre, but saying one likes indie music in my mind means that one listens to the music popular in the indie subculture. Could be anything from postrock to garage rock to indietronica...

I expect more maturity from the mentors on this board, usually. I think this thread was to identify your favorite genres, not to bash on other peoples' tastes using tired cliches.

Mine would be Heavy Metal, but I enjoy Techno, Drum n Bass, and Rock as well.

Symphonic Metal, esp. the band Nightwish.

Think taking like a rock/metal band, adding an orchestra, a chorus, and highly lyrical vocals mixed with typical rock singing. It's pretty awesome.

Have you heard the KISS album with the Melbourne Syphony Orchestra backing them up. It's awesome.

I'm more of a house music type of guy, Dubstep is growing on me more and always love 90s hip hop or rap with meaning like Lupe fiasco etc. Classical music puts me to sleep which is good because I don't sleep lol. But I can listen to virtually anything and are always looking for new house and techno artist anyone got any suggestions?

As a Jazz/Blues guitarist myself, I tend to stick to those genre's. Anything with a sexy guitar part (SRV, BB King, Robert Johnson, Clapton, Pat Matheny, Freddie Green, Russel Malone, all that Jazz. (See what I did there? :D ))

After that, I really dig the old, bluesy rock, such as Hendrix, Led Zeppelin ( <---My favorite), The Doors, Grateful Dead, The Animals, etc.

I am not really sure where Jethro Tull qualifies in all of this, but they are my second favorite band. (Thick as a Brick is what I listen to when doing all of my last-minute CAD for our sponsors in the middle of the season.)

I can listen to metal when I need to get pumped, but I am not a hardcore metalhead, so I stick to the more popular stuff, my favorite being Iron Maiden. I also really like Rammestein.

Pink Floyd is in there as one of my favorites.

But I do appreciate all types of music. I can dig rap on occasion (such as Snoop Dogg's cover of The Doors "Riders on the Storm," ) but that might be due to the school I go to, and how rap is the local music. I can sometimes go for Reggae (especially Armenian Reggae, look it up :D .)

Here are my favourites and my favourite examples of all of them

Psychedelic Rock (Pink Floyd)(Pink floyd = number one FOREVER),
Alternative Rock (Radiohead),
Punk Rock (Billy Talent)
Progressive Metal(Protest the Hero,
Classic Rock(Rush and the beatles)
Heavy Metal(Haven't really decided as of yet),
Death Metal(Opeth/Amon Amarth),
Noir Jazz(Bohren and Der Club of Gore),
Classical/Orchestral(Holst/Debussy/Cage),
Frank Sinatra/Louis armstrong kind of jazz
Funk/Soul/Reggae(Marley)

I feel like the Psychedelic-y Metal-y Alternative-y Vibes get drowned out at Competitions by the unbelievable amounts of dubstep and EDM. No hate, but I wanna hear some real stuff sometime
